This makes me feel really good, you don't hear people often talk this way about those of us on the spectrum. You give me faith that I won't always be misunderstood....
thank you for showing grace and love to a person that obviously has a lot in his heart to share. It's very touching to see stuff like this over a chess board.
Did everyone else catch the guy’s mannerisms and think he probably has some level of autism? It’s so endearing the way his excitement or frustration shows so vividly in his handling of the chess pieces.
While I don't think its appropriate to diagnose random strangers based on a 20 minute clip of them, as an autistic person myself, we would be more than happy to claim this man as one of us.
That’s how he plays, he can’t stare at the board. He freeze frames it and stares off while the information processes. You can tell by how he moves when he finally knows what move he wants to make. Also, we can smell our own.

I don't typically watch these videos, I'm average at chess at best, but this was one of the most human and engaging things ever, and I appreciated it so much. Thank you.
I was so hooked by this video the entire time. It’s beautiful how you gave this guy the time of day to listen and engage with him, you can see how much of a difference that made. I’m from New York, and I just ADORE the vibe and openness people have there generally, as well as the international vibe. The spontaneity of people’s interactions there is what makes it such a beautiful place, and this was one of those core New York experiences, talking to a wacky and sweet human and getting some wildly cool perspectives.
This is one of my favorite most wholesome videos I’ve ever come across. The potential of an in person conversation that no social media conversation could ever touch. Look at the beauty that comes from being polite and making someone feel comfortable to open up to you.
Amazing how two people of much different age and skill level can sit down, play a game, and have so much fun while taking away something from the experience to top it all off. Kudos Anna.
Beautiful attitude the whole game Anna. And way to give Johnny the time of day to say what he wanted. He said something important at the end, "sometimes people are mean around here" and you gave him a glipse of your light and kindness that more of the world needs to see. Congrats on your win and kindness. God Bless
You were very polite and gentle with this gentleman. You can tell you put him at ease, then you made him feel like a worthy opponent / human being Kudos Anna
How incredibly lovely! Johnny is such a wonderful teacher. I loved when he talked about how you can’t be a good teacher unless you are willing to give it away. As an educator I love that idea so much!!!!
This whole video makes me smile so much 🥺 I'm just getting into chess, but the ability to go to a park, sit down, play chess and exchange stories with others.. It just shows how good the world can be. This is how life should be 🖤
I love watches your matches Anna, even through you are being blasted with a barrage of distracting conversation, you responded well, still kept your cool and nailed the game yet again! Thanks so much for sharing your skills with the rest of us and maintaining your bright cheerful disposition! Thoroughly enjoyable!!!
Anna (and particularly her series with Johnny) have gotten me heavily into chess. Johnny’s explanation in the Pia video completely blew my mind and changed my perspective on how to view and approach chess. I’m having a lot of fun reading about theory, learning about the history of chess, and getting absolutely demolished by baby-skilled bots. I’ll get my first win sooner or later.
Yes, this. One day I tried to figure out where my chess-scratch came from and remembered the street chess video. ...I initially clicked to see the story unfold of a sweet‐looking woman (Pia) winning against a park hustler. But then, Johnny made me want to understand what I was watching 🥰. (FF 10mo) I'm here watching chess bc it's a Tata Steel tourny break day 😄
Cramling is so cool, she couldve tore this guy up but she allowed the game to breathe so this nice old man could have a fun time. Loves stuff like this.
You were so sweet and genuine with him. That was great! I never watch a whole game, but the connection between you guys was great and kept me watching to the end.
OMG Anna, you are so patient. Gotta watch that guy's distractions and quick moves, LOL. He tried one on you but quickly learned that you pay attention no matter how long he talks.
This was so beautiful to watch. Such respect both ways. A younger generation with the older generation...a great pleasant match. So pure and lovely. The vibe and energy from both generations was gorgeous. Priceless life lessons. I'm not a chess player at all bit watching this video makes me want to learn. Chess can be a great opportunity to meet great people. Well done to Anna & Johnny...loved it!
He claimed he talked a lot, but honestly I could listen to his philosophies for hours haha! He's funny, and very spirited; doesn't care about winning or losing just the human interaction! HAHA
There are several great chess streamers I like to watch but I learn the most from your videos - with how you explain your analysis and tactics so well; but my favorite videos are when you play random people in parks. This man needed your kindness to feel "worthy", and you were there for him. Watching this made me feel happy.
I just love how anna look him in the eye while he's talking. It means you're listening and care what he's telling. I love pia and i love anna they're both great person
I don't know why, but this interaction was really powerful and wonderful. I was smiling during the whole 19 min and after a while a noticed my cheeks started hurting :)
I thought it was all subterfuge on his part. He talks a lot on purpose, which is what I think, and it's gamesmanship. I have played with people like this at golf and snooker a lot over the years. One guy admitted he did it on purpose by talking a lot to distract me as he knew I was better and it was his only chance. It seems nice to people that only see face value, that an older guy is talking nicely, but underneath it is is likely a ploy to distract, and you could see when he realised she had him it was head in his hands. People need to look beyond the obvious and think about how devious people can be behind a facade of pleasentness.
@@vxrdrummer "devious"- an old man trying to win a game of chess at a park. Yeah it's likely a ploy but at the end of the day all he wants is to play chess with someone and have a chance to socialise
This man is a chess hustler. He speaks very quickly, making eye contact and looking at various things in the park while he does so to distract her. He moves his pieces equally as quickly so that she can't register how the board has changed. As it becomes clear that she knows what she's doing, he slows down.
you came across my feed recently so I clicked, I dont even play chess, but the way you present yourself and the game made me click a few more. Then I saw this and realized why I was attracted to your content. Always smiling, always enthusiastic, and as I see now, a wonderful heart.
My favourite moment 13:31 when he complimented you on challenging him to a chess game, having just realised that you were a special person (not just a good chess player) and had made his day. Brought tears
Johnny is a great description of what a true New Yorker is though too. New Yorkers get the bad rep that we're aggressive, we speak fast, loud and just overall obnoxious. But his heartfelt conversation is EXACTLY what it means to be a New Yorker. We're direct and we may call you stupid for doing something stupid, but man, we'd have each others back. I miss New York so much, I miss the tri-state area. Johnny is the representation of what MAJORITY of New Yorkers are deep down.
I find guys like this very taxing. I'm a logical introvert and his personality is so clashing with my own that I could not take more than 2 or 3 minutes with him, however Anna genuinely listened to the man and enjoyed her time playing and conversing with him. It was nice to watch. I felt like she was showing me how to be a better person.
It all becomes easier when we realize we are all one. Anna seems to get this. I'm a terrible chess player but the human stories she is telling by recording these games is incredibly compelling. Love it.
It's part of his game. Friendly, repetitive, not-always coherent chatter that distracts and breaks any rhythm or concentration. It goes with his method of play--sudden, rapid two-hand move-and-capture, trying to make everything a surprise. But Anna is GOOD, and handles the board and the opponent equally well.
Her incredible patience and kindness says volumes about her! So cool to watch. Man I was getting tired of hearing him talk, and I think he was talking somewhat to protect his ego incase he losses. Kept saying too that his talents are not on the chess board but in understanding people. But he can play quite fast and while barely looking. And when he thought she was distracted in conversation at 10:00, I think he tried to cheat. I'm doubtful that was an accident with the way he stopped talking, and looked away all nonchalantly. Felt a lot like a guilty tale. Glad she caught him! Watching ego death is really fun. 😆
EXACT ! He´s a Jocker. He tried to deceive her. (!) The hectic Conversation and the hectic Moves should confuse her. Not a Gentleman. (!) I avoid people like that Man.
This is an amazing interaction. What a guy, and maximum respect to you Anna for your patience and kindness. I think he really needed someone like you to come along.
It wasn't intended to sound that way. He said "people don't talk to me much"...so I made a guess that the people he sees usually don't make time for him. Which is sad, the guy has a lot of wisdom, is passionate about something, and just seems like a really nice guy.
I have no clue how to play chess but I really enjoy your videos. God bless you for the way you treated this man who rarely receives the respect you’ve shown him. He is so endearing and underneath it all, he really has much to teach about how to be a decent human being. He met his match in playing with you. You made his day and brought him much happiness.
This was a great analysis at human psychology, the feelings behind the words. His words: there's no losing, it's all about fun, etc", yet, he was tense and "tortured" at the idea of losing to the point of trying to pull a tricky move, When defeat was inevitable, he made it up with a lot of gab. That's all humans though, he's still a very nice and likeable guy. Once we detach from ego, losing really won't matter because you either win or learn.
This was a wonderful experience to watch. I laughed with Joy at parts of the conversation. This is a sharing of two kind hearts as their minds work peacefully to take each other's pieces out. I loved it all. Thank you for posting this game.
Thanks, Anna, I learned a lot from what he said, especially in life...thanks again you made me cry... love your experience, actually I'm not good or not in chess, but I'm a tennis coach, learned a lot from your video and experience with different kinds of people around this world.

Yes, this. He tried... Out of desperation.

Me too. I couldn't either. Although sometimes in the past I have.
Anna is the epitome of charming and kind. She had endless patience for his monologuing and cheating.
It all becomes easier when we realize we are all one. Anna seems to get this. I'm a terrible chess player but the human stories she is telling by recording these games is incredibly compelling. Love it.
I agree I can't take all of the ramblings. I am very sure he is a kind and intelligent guy but he is too much for me.

This was a great analysis at human psychology, the feelings behind the words.
