    For me, there is no question on "preference" for quilting. I will do it myself, on a domestic machine, because I would not be able to afford to do it any other way. My great grandmother did the quilting by hand....and she made a LOT of quilts. No whining allowed from me when I have so much more at my disposal than she ever did.

      My grandmother, g-gma, great aunts etc did hand cutting, piecing, quilting, and sewing. My grandfather made a quilting frame that I remember having saw horses on each end. It was a family affair. I remember MomMom teaching me a little bit of each and explaining different processes😊. Fond memories.. No treasured... memories 🤍
      Later in life she did use the sewing machine some-why not?

    Quick tip. If you start at center of quilt and work in a quadrant, then go back to center, do next quadrant, then repeat for the other two quadrants. So don’t have to struggle with the quilt as much and you never have a lot of bulk under the machine.

    This was very helpful! Do you not use a screwdriver to tighten the foot on your machine? I would be afraid that mine would loosen and I would break a needle!?!?

    • @pickinstitches
      @pickinstitches  4 месяца назад +1

      I dont always use the driver for the foot, I check it pretty frequently but with "quilting" its probably best to use the driver because of all the vibrations- you are right! I do for the needle :)

    First time free motion quilting and it is fun however even though using a silicon mat I had trouble moving the quilt smoothly. Felt heavy. Any hints appreciated.

    • @pickinstitches
      @pickinstitches  3 месяца назад

      Anything yiu can do to support the weight of your quilt will help. J keep most of it on the table and I open the drawers next to me to support anything hanging to the left. But mostly I hold it up off my lap. I've seen contraptions to hold the weight even above the label, but I've never used one. You might ask at your local quilt shop.

    What settings do you have your machine on, such as tension and length of stitch?

    • @pickinstitches
      @pickinstitches  2 месяца назад

      I leave the tension on the same and when you lower the feed dogs it does not advance the fabric. So I dont move that dial, but you could drop it to zero if you want. But you have to drop the feed dogs.

    Kelly this probably won't help you since you have a long arm but it might help others like me that quilt on their domestic machine. Amazon sells a single can of 505 (7.2 oz) for $13.20 that is $ 1.83 per oz !!! Now look at the price of 3 cans $50.06 but they are 12.4 oz cans!! that means it is $1.37 an oz That would be the same as getting that $13.20 7.2oz for $9.86

    What stitch length did you use?

    • @pickinstitches
      @pickinstitches  4 месяца назад +1

      When the feed dogs are dropped your hands are driving the speed of the movement and the length of the stitch. Ive heard of people dropping the length to 0 but your dogs shouldn't be moving unless your machine doesn't really have a free-motion function. So drop to zero cant hurt, but mine was at 2.5 for this whole video but the feed dogs were down. Hope that helps!
