This is not meant to be a hit job....just our honest assessment of The DEL

I worked at the Del several decades ago, before all of the modern changes, and when Sunday brunch was still being served in the Crown Room. Very early one morning, a security guard and I watched the ballroom doors fling themselves open and flutter a bit, then slowly close again. The guard looked at me with wide eyes, then shrugged and walked away. That beautiful hotel holds so much forgotten history and stories of guests long passed. I miss taking my high heels off and walking on the wet beach sand during my midnight lunch breaks. It was a magical place. 🙂

Havent seen the hotel since the renovations.sad to hear the changes to the Crown room, and looks like less wood paneling and more wallpaper in the hallways.ill cheerish the memories of my last visit.

I grew up in San Diego in the 60-70's. My father and I had lunch in the Crown Room back in the mid 70's. Very sad to find out how all the "modernization" have taken away the historic charm of the place. Staying at the Del was one of my bucket list items, but after seeing this, I'm definitely harboring second thoughts.

We stay at the Beach Village every year at the Del. Yes, it’s all expensive, but if you do your homework beforehand, you know the pricing on everything. Life is too short to not enjoy the Del.

We knew what we were getting into but it still was a little shocking. It was a bucket list item for my wife so not an issue. However, they do take a heavy hand to their prices. Parking at $75/day. It is cheaper in NYC! And as we pointed out in the video the service is no where near the quality of the Breakers in Palm Beach or the newly renovated and spectacular Boca Raton in Boca Raton Florida.

@@Yoloadventure-2013 Interesting that you say parking is $75, as it’s been $50 for us the last few years. Maybe that’s Beach Village pricing. Funny how even when you spend $1600 a night, you still have to pay for parking. Oh well, it’s the price you pay for the location.

Just spent some time visiting the hotel, while friends stayed there. They got a reduced rate since there are renovations happening, but still pretty steep. I did notice the mix of modern/contemporary vs the original aesthetic…which, yeah…not the greatest.
Anyway, thanks for the honest review & post! Your wife is beautiful!

One of our close friends was in the Navy during the Viet Nam war. He fired a shot over the Coronado Hotel during a practice run and got into real trouble over it.

This used to be rated as a 5 Star Resort, but sadly they have fallen down to a 4 Star. The Del Coronado has seen better days, and is not what it used to be. It's CERTAINLY not as good as its daughter Resort, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. But she's still a beautiful Grand Old Lady that's worth a visit at least once. :)

about 25 years ago, a date took me to dinner at the Del. He then wanted to take me up in the cage elevator for the experience of it, and to show me the ballroom. speaking of balls... The lady who ran the cage elevator did everything except cuddle his balls... It was a very weird experience. He was super embarrassed, and we were trapped in that little cage with that very forward and predatory woman for a few minutes. I still laugh when I remember it. I guess she thought she was gonna win that round... lol... unfortunately, it colored my experience of the rest of the evening, and I don't really remember much else about the Del, and I never went out with that guy again. I always figured that if he got lonely, he knew where to go😂

Much of the charm began to dissipate with the change in ownership to The Blackstone Group . 🤔

Blackstone is a greed machine. Ruined many parts of the hotel...But for some they like the new buildings...To each his own!

When did black stone take over this property? I was surprised that it took me recently to the Hilton website to book a room.

Blackstone bought it around 2016 and the Hilton Flag was in 2017

Blackstone sure absolutely strangled the charm and vibe of this place that used to be something special. Gentrified cheap remodeling morphed this San Diego gem into a generic glass and concrete structure with red and white accents. We used to love going there as kids with our parents for Mother's Day or Labor Day weekends 20 years ago.
Attending a wedding there last year left us in shock and sadness. The vibrant "Some Like It Hot" energy that used to define the place? Vanished without a trace. Now, you've got hordes of people swarming in just to check out the hotel or drop $25 on ice cream. It's like a non-stop rush hour NYC subway with foot traffic everywhere you turn. We don’t mind to pay high dollar for unique and memorable experiences. This is not the one anymore 😢

Completely sub par! Hilton has no taste, just greed.
