- "Trust is eroding all around us everyday. Conflict and skepticism fill the void.
In these challenging times, this former Green Beret explains how to lead people who don't want to be led."
Scott Mann is a former Army Special Forces officer who spent 23 years deployed to some of the most challenging and violent places on the planet. He is a master at building relationships in high-stakes, competitive environments. As a Green Beret in the United States Army, he forged bonds and solved problems using values that moved people around the world to stand up for themselves. His secret? He was able to restore trust and create human connections in places where that didn’t seem possible. He is now bringing those same principles to corporate boardrooms and conference rooms-where trusted leadership is more valuable-and more vulnerable-than ever.
Scott is a regular contributor to CNN, Fox News, Wall Street Journal Radio, and NPR.
Today he is a leadership speaker and trainer. He is also the author of the #1 international best-selling book Game Changers. Scott remains on a mission to teach organizations the same “game-changing” leadership strategies he learned in combat.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
I'm sorry is the point of this talk really just about trust? Because... that seems so obvious. Don't get me wrong, Scott has obviously had some intense experiences that would have illuminated the importance of trust in a very impactful way but I would hope that the majority of people wouldn't need to go to war to understand this... maybe I've just been lucky in terms of my community but "trust is eroding all around us everyday" is not my reality
trust is such a strong word I believe, and there are not many giving it
without trust, life loses meaning, imo
I understand him when I put myself in his shoes
People often fear change, but also being undervalued and disrespected. People fear the pain of being overlooked for leadership roles and being disregarded as “not leadership material”.😎
depends on your view of the situation
Scott is the definition of what it means to be a noble human being.
thanks for sending to me!
So amazing that just the presence gives empowerment to the locals. No expectation, just the support, gave people the courage they needed to protect themselves. What a unique perspective to leadership.
And a wonderful human being
Trust has diminished and I keep hearing this everywhere and everyday. Faith and hope keep me sane.
‘Leave your tracks’, I’m all teary at this. Powerful talk and powerful message.
Thank you!
Dude this guy is beyond eloquent, this is seriously good and needs to be heard!
agree
This man is incredible, what an amazing story!! I hope he keeps in touch with all the people he met, he would have helped them so much!!
Thanks Sammy. I sure do my best to do that. Our non-profit "The Heroes Journey" works with a lot of these folks every day to help them tell their story as they transition home from service.
He really is
this is so good!
Agreed!!!
very good talk!
I am often in awe of people who become specialised in the military. Not for me, but so grateful that it is a calling for others.
Scott Mann is the MAN! His training is awesome and he is a true leader. Just finished a 48 hour Rooftop Leadership training course with Scott and I'm walking out with a new view on the world.
where do you do the training, I just found this talk, I'd love to know where he is located to do this?
I saw another TED he did, it was so powerful.
Can't believe this is that old a talk, it fits for right now so well.
what was in the course?
you're so lucky!!!
I have never heard such a well-spoken and charismatic speaker. His delivery is spot on. Truly amazing and touching talk.
Leading is more than running at the front, leading is often at the back supporting.... And Scott is a perfect example of this.
He really is.
People want to be seen. Leaders want others to be seen
Thank you for your service Scott, we are safer because of men and leaders like you.
I will never fire a rifle in Afghanistan but I will give thanks for people like you, Scott, who have. Thank you for your service.
If we lead with courage and transparency, those that care will always follow. That's how we know we are doing the right thing.
Its a bit sad going to war as a peacemaker, to learn how live, create trust and build community. Its exciting to see it as valuable lessons for leadership.
Both highly articulate and profound. Very much enjoyed this talk.
Lessons teach us and experience defines us, this man is proof of that!
This is real leadership in my eyes. Leading by example in such a real way.
The world would be such a better place if people were focused on forming connections like that.
That is a world I can only dream of
Yes it makes sense to break bread and be face to face in order to align with values and trust. The complexity of all this is pretty incredible.
So very true, I think it's engraved in our brains that sharing a meal is a time to find common ground.
Such a golden heart, you can see it and feel it through this entire talk.
you can!!!
Yeah wow, seriously..
There is such a genuine energy. I got a lot from this
@@amberdenkins 🥰
Teary-eyed every time I watch this. Beautifully crafted and performed. Leave tracks.
you should watch his other talk "Scars"
I have seen another talk he does, it was very powerful.
its so true an such a good way of presenting it.
brilliant talk!
Rachelle, thank you so much for your kinds words...and for your great editing skills in getting the Leading through Chaos book out on the street.
Rooftop leadership, oh yes that makes perfect sense. Thanks for telling the story to understand ourselves better! 💪💪
The physicality he gives to this presentation really connects something for me.
Scott is an amazing man and the work he does is so important in understanding so much of this
Impressed by how you connect military service to leadership! Nice talk.
Trust, you said it. That's amazing work to be proud of and humbled by.
Thank you Scott for all you have done and continue to do for this country and those who defend it
"connect at exactly the right spot, with precisely the right person" I know he's talking about something that's planned and coordinated but it made me think of so many moments where I met someone by chance and they turned out to be precisely the right person that I needed in my life at the time. Thank you for that reminder Scott.
I hate to admit how mesmerised I was by this talk. I normally can't stand anything or anyone so steeped in militarism but this was beautiful.
I find it fascinating the length of time a war can continue, perhaps so long its the only thing they know how to do. Raised by the fight.
Definitely agree with Scott on this stuff, trust needs to be built in to the foundation of every successful relationship you build
I'm very glad Scott has this platform as an outlet for the trauma he has experienced.
To have come out of that with a perspective like Scott has is pretty amazing.
I have seen another of his talks and the way he enacts those scenes to make his point is really powerful. He has such a unique skill in his speaking.
Thank you, John!
Oh my god, what he sees at the 17 minute mark had me in tears.
13:39 “when our higher purpose serve people we will never even meet”. Powerful stuff- purposeful stuff. This is what I want to do with my life.
Thank you, Brianna!
Learning how to become a better leader, regardless of what comes your way. Good stuff.
It's so true that people bond more quickly and strongly during intense situations like that, and the idea of always having that mentality is really interesting!
There is something in human nature and adversity that I'm sure there is a lot of research on
I've always heard the term "leading by example" but this is truly it. incredible.
We often forget when we are thinking about management and leadership that, while there is plenty of information and research about how to be an effective leader, at the end of the day we are dealing with people. Personal interaction and engagement is invaluable.
Such a cheerful guy, I'd never guess that he is a military!
Watching Scott I can tell he is the perfect leader - as he leads by example, he's honest and you can tell his morals and values are true and align with that of serving and contributing.
ya he seems to me to have a really good well rounded view compared to most military ppl i have personally met
I know I'd follow him, through and through
Bringing people together and coming together for a common purpose is true humanity. It touches us at our core, the polarity between fear and love.
Thanks Jacey. It was beautiful to see and we need to do it more today.
@@rooftopleadership222 😌 😍 🥰
"when our higher purpose serves people that we will never even meet" definitely felt some tightness in my chest reading about the chat with his Dad.. and then the bit "how do we find the courage to go up those ladders when no one is following us" boom. so many amazing bits to take on here. what a rad guy.
This really got me! So incredible.
I loved the bit about the ladder, because it really is so tough to move forward when you feel like you're alone
haha yes, not going to lie i had some tears in my eyes
Absolutely. Particularly the part about going up the ladders with no one following, that rocked me
Pretty incredible that Scott could come back and do what he's doing now. It takes a very strong character in my opinion to be able to move forward after experiencing such awfulness.
He's helping people heal and that's the most important
Daaaamn that is a really inspiring talk...
Regardless of what your beliefs about war are these people do an amazing job for their countries.
What an intelligent and well rounded man. To have been through what he has been and to come out of it with the ability to be real and raw and honest. It's very refreshing to see! Brilliant man, awesome talk.
He's an absolute legend.
Those in business and leadership need perspectives liked this to understand that it is human beings who they are leading and working with, however, this is a pretty intense way to be approaching business in a cushy western world.
loved hearing about Jim and Sitting Bull. such an incredible story. I'm all about leading by example and connecting with those around you to move forward. Scott seems like an absolute champion.
Thanks for sending to me Sam!!!
loved this too
a legend for sure!
such a good story! loved it!
So much good stuff in this ted!
Scott, well done. You tell a great story with wonderfully important life lessons...'See you on the roof top'
Thanks Otis. You are an awesome leader and that means so much!
Incredible speaker!
This completely moved me. Thank you for making a difference in my life with this talk.
So many of my thoughts changed watching this
Scott, you are really onto something here. Cheers for this!
Thank you, Brewster!
Passionate, inspiring and emotional message from Scott. His message is one that should resonate with anyone who leads people regardless of the job or position. We are all better off working as one!
Thanks Steve. I appreciate your leadership sir. I can tell it's strong.
Defending together. So impressive in the line of fire.
Wow! The fear alone. I have no words.
what a great presenter he is. he should be a spokesperson
Thank you, Denis!
Really increased my understanding of how this all works. Thank you so much I couldn't even imagine what this would be like.
Thank you for taking the time to watch, Piper!
Such an amazing talk Scott, my mind is awash with so many things I would never have otherwise thought of.
Definitely not what I was anticipating! So much more...
the resilience of this man is extraordinary. i can't even begin to imagine the strength and vision he must have.
a perspective i needed today. Thank you Scott.
I think I just saw your dad doing a TED talk, you are both amazing!
Leading by example through and through! Thank you Scott! I really got so much from hearing of the way you helped defend and support those people!
I'm off to "leave my tracks in the world". Thanks for this Scott.
How incredible this guy is talking about his idea with a retrospective of his time in the army.
I nearly applauded, and I'm sitting here at my computer on my own. Excellent talk.
I really appreciate it Mira!
To lead you must first learn to follow. he has the right path to be at the front.
Thank you for sharing your experiences Scott, it can't be easy to relive this.
Most people have their own ideas about how to create positive change, and living your life in the way this guy is talking about would certainly help to connect with like-minded people.
That's all any of us want hey, like minded people around us
I had no idea what the difference was between ‘Green Beret’ and ‘Navy Seals’. I hadn’t really thought about it, I guess because I’m not American. I didn’t realised how on the ground with the communities they were and I am really impressed.
Good share Salsa!
Strongly agree with what's being said here. Trust is a huge foundation in building rapport within ANY kind of relationship and something people are forgetting how to do
Thank you for your service, Scott.
I would think that Scott is an exception to the rule of what we see our service people as, or have been lead to believe. What a beautiful and thought provoking talk :)
Leaving your tracks in this world- that really hit me. We so often feel the pressure to make an impact but this phrase just tops that… Leave track for others to follow, don’t build monuments for others to idolize.
Leads by example and reaps the true rewards
What a wonderful man, your experiences of trust and community are so powerful
Whether we realise it or not, fear is deep rooted in many people and when one of us is brave enough to lead the way it encourages those around us.
WOW! Connect with humans as if your life depends on it. That is a strong message I needed to hear.
It really changes how I view even day to day interactions
Quality of life is definitely dependent on our connections
There were quite a few one liners in here that got me, but that one really hit home
@@erikashik true yeah.
@@easyrider9366 😁
It would have been such a shock to the system, fighting for a country that didn't really want you there to begin with. I've always been very unsure about our troops being there and I questioned the reasoning to us being there. But then I see this talk and I wonder if the connections our troops made with people while there helped in a way we can't quite see yet. Beautiful talk Scott and thank you for all your hard work.
Pat, thank you. It was a mixed bag. I wish we had done more local work earlier in the war, but at the end of the day, I think we made an impact. More to do for sure...and much to learn. Thanks again Pat.
I agree Pat, so very much. But like you said, you see this beautiful man inspiring people and it all makes sense.
If we could all follow our " highest purpose and serve people we will never meet" what a better world it would be.
So many of us are removed from what raw, human experience is and so in our heads about the formulas and processes we need to follow. We forget to just be human and connect with other humans. Once upon a time, our life really did depend on that.
This is a great way to highlight this
Point of no return! I have been there! It is like the fight for your life starts because you have no other option. So much get done and there is so much innovation and life in those moments.
Maybe I'm particularly emotional today but this talk had me in tears for so many moments. The part about finding courage when no one is following us in particular just... destroyed me in such an amazing way.
I am so grateful for this message today
Steph, I'm glad this could make a difference in your day!
I think all it takes is for one person to step outside what is being accepted to show everyone that they don't just have to go along with what's happening. This talk really validated that belief, Scott, thank you.
Scott Mann is a great American! #AmericanDreamU is proud to be about of #MissionAmerica. Thank you for all you continue to do for our Country Scott
Great message for us all. Thank you! 🇺🇸❤️
Thanks so much Phi!
Wow this is amazing Scott you should be so proud of yourself for finding something to focus your attention and power towards post-war.
This is hectic and heavy and beautiful all at once. Can't even begin to imagine what that would have felt like and been like for ya'll
Thank you for taking the time to watch Kasper - I really appreciate it!
Oh man the story of Jimmy and Sitting Bull, such a surprisingly wholesome part of this talk.
got me too
I appreciate it, Zack!
A bit off the war topic and with no malice, I have always loved that saying "nobody's getting out of here alive." It keeps the permanence of things in perspective.
I met some of the military men in my life. I can tell you they are the most disciplined people and their self-control is amazing. And the way they manage anything is just unbelievable. Seems they can do anything and they don't know the word can't.
I just went down such a rabbit hole with this guy and his talks. Just... wow. Such a life lived already and then to come home and navigate 'civilian' life so powerfully, to not give in to that despair... amazing.
Amazing talk Scott! Really interesting stuff especially coming from a background with such high stakes.
Thank you, Janice!
Added to favorites - much to get from this one
Scott seems like such an intelligent, empathetic and well rounded sort, I want to ask him if he still agrees with what is happening!
Came here after seeing SCARS, this man is powerful!!
me too
Thanks so much Suzy. I really appreciate it. It means a lot to use story to communicate to great leaders like you!
@@oussamakimbo9535 Thank you so much.
I did too Suzy!
I saw that one also!
And now he saved over 500 people leading a secret operation in Kabul.. what a hero
Thank you for your support V Laan!
We can say we lead, but the great bones really guide.
There are so many courses and big hype events about 'leadership', but you can really see that this guy knows what it means!
