Yes, but what about reality? This explains why complete idiots actually get enthusiastic followers to be *for* things that are very bad. This explains why there are people who think murderous rapists should be welcome into all countries. This explains why people like 0bama and the clintons have followers, even though they want horrible things for the USA. :( This Simon Lancaster is so into language, he is blind of reality and facts. This is why he is anti-Trump. Stupid elitist asshole!

I love how he explained that rhetoric isn’t taught in schools as it once used to be. Now there’s so many young people out there that have no idea how to express themselves and it holds them back from making a difference. I somehow feel like this isn’t an accident. Someone was trying to hold us back.

Let's Revive Rhetoric in Public Education!
"It is absoulutely scandalous that, when in the world we're dealing with such huge challenges , financial inequalities, the apocalyptic threats of climate change, religious persecution unmatched since the 1940s, that we should be restricting debate to such a narrow minority (the politicians). Instead of teaching our children to sit down and shut up we should be teaching them to stand up and speak out. So, let's revive rhetoric (in education). Let's really reinvigorate debates around the world and let's really give the chance to every child on the planet to become a leader. How should we call this Grand Initiative? Well, here's an idea: How about Democracy!?"

This explains why people like Trump attract so many followers, because they appeal to the most base parts of human nature.

Also, I have to agree that those 6 techniques(three breathless sentences, three repetitive sentences, balancing sentences, exaggeration, metaphors, and rhyming) all seem effective, and the examples he gave seem to back up his argument that they work.

Even if people do not become master rhetoricians themselves, they need to learn it so that they can defend themselves against manipulation, so that they can grasp the gullibility of the mind on first impressions, and so that they can understand the importance of educating future generations in it.

    Important Clippings:
    - 6 speech writer secrets:
    1. The rule of 3. Like TEDx slogan: rethink, reinvent, and reinvest ourselves.
    2. Three sentences in which the opening clause is repeated.
    3. Metaphor is probably the most important piece of political communication.
    4. Images of positive and negative things.
    5. Exaggeration
    6. Rhyming sentences
-They work because they speak to the instinctive, emotional and logical brains.
-Instead of teaching our children to sit down and shut up, we should be teaching them stand up and speak out.

( ! ) Okay, I really enjoyed this talk and agree this is a very important topic, but this was uploaded in 2016, I'm writing this comment in 2018. Nothing has changed at all. Nobody (to my knowledge) has implemented retoric/speech in the school programs. The same goes for other valuable ideas shared before in TEDx, for example, I remember a talk given by an old man who lived in Africa and had discovered how to stop climate change by bringing in roaming cattle to dry lands... What are we waiting for? This comment section is full of capable and inteligent people, We applaud this concepts and ideas, but we don´t take action.

Because this can initiate a big change.

But fewest of us will know who to contact such person.
I dont know but maybe a government department is the right receiver.

Here is the thing... those "elite" he mentioned at the end doesn't have any interest of spreading this and many other good ideas as they could be a threat to the same "elite"
It is kind of US paragraph 22 - those who can change it are also those who going to take the negatives so... ;)

In high school if you take an AP English class you learn how to analyze rhetoric in writing. We never learned any of this speech building stuff in school though. It needs to be implemented in our schools, and it has to be implemented for everyone instead of just a select few.

Eloquent, funny and useful! Simon has delivered a great talk on the art of a delivering a speech its not a talk about how leaders speak its instead on how to speak like a leader which makes it more actionable like a having a word Ninja spy on the inside and feed you Intel. If you want to leave any audience impressed, make sure your speech with Simon's advice are dressed!

I like this speaker because of the relevance of the content of the topic-"Speaking like Leaders," and how he use the materials he had at hand. The body phonetics, the changing timber of voice, even history of speakers and their immortal quotes. Nice...I like it.

I've used this in my classroom alongside other lesson materials when teaching rhetoric. Rhetoric is part of our district's curriculum initiative to help our students better understand the staggering amount of discourse often over their heads, or written in such a way that our students fail to realize the deep manipulation by advertising, by politicians, and by their peers.
