It is said when people speak a different language their personality changes like a schizophrenic. I am a firm believer of this because when I speak Spanish I feel nothing like I do when I speak English.

"Don't be afraid to make mistakes." Seems to be a common theme in a lot of these language Ted Talks and other videos. Noted. 👍
You can't commit mistakes if you don't know anything
It is a fear children don't have and they grow up to master the language of their culture.
I ask myself, why do I keep watching these ted talks about language learning when they are all virtually identical
@@mcmerry2846 You can: you just don't know what are the mistakes.

Katherine Roman how easy is it for a Russian to understand a Ukrainian and vice versa?
Yes!!!

I'm currently learning spanish language, Thank you for the words, it motivates me a lot. ❤️
Hows the Spanish coming along?
I did French at school. Quickly picked up Spanish before travelling to Europe, found that I could read about 90% of Danish newspapers after about three weeks. Third trip to Europe is being planned. Also was able to get a handle on Basque. All of this in my sixties.
Christopher Ellis how did you learn danish so quickly?
Conor McCormack in København, one is surrounded by Danish. Once one has a handle on such words as på og til, the rest is almost English. I cannot speak or understand it, for it has consonants not used in English b d g r sk, for example. Æ ø y are found in French and German. It's called immersion, but some study of grammar and vocabulary are necessary.
woow hvordan går du
You were born talented, unlike most people. Or you’re lying.
I really enjoyed this presentation. As a language teacher for more than 10 years, I have reflected many times on why I was so interested in learning the languages that I have learned, and how I could instill that interest into my students. This presentation contains many excellent ideas and points that all make complete sense. I would recommend this video to anyone who feels apprehensive about learning a new language.
I loved this. I'm learning Danish at the moment. I absolutely love the language. Just switched my phone to Danish. Hope I don't get lost with it
I think learning a new language is like a brilliant adventure that everyone can have in Life.
Everyone can fail.
I totally agree with you. This is great adventure for me
I only speak English fluently now but I'm learning spanish and I want to become a polyglot
Same boat, but I'm learning Italian.
By the way, I recommend making sure to pronounce the words a lot, because then you'll remember them. Recently I've gotten a lot better just from that.
Jelly Squid same here!
Kaelei Olson my advice is to actually use the words you learn frequently. Even when talking to your friends try to form sentences and call certain objects by their name in that language if you know that word. I was able to learn 200 Japanese words and about the same amount of kanji in a month and a half just by doing that. Good luck :)

Hey Matthew :) that's a pretty cool talk and inspiring. I'm actually on the way to learn my fourth language and I can say that it has been one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done in life. Will start following you guys on Social Media.
Thank you! Very insightful The 30 minutes to study each day is such a game changer!
This was encouraging. I am trying to learn a second language. It’s not been easy but I know I can do it!
Well... it was interesting... I think that learning a language is not a ONE way thing and you need to learn a little of this and a little bit of that. I have been teaching for more than 20 years and I got some great results... but there is just a simple fact that people should understand... you need to learn some grammar and understand how the language is structured if you want to learn it. The vocabulary is just a question of being able to remember the words. Then after will also come the way to pronounce... and French is a challenging language! But if you put yourself into it... everything is possible!!!
Hey ! Vincent. I follow your videos :) Haha !
You have to learn grammar but you don’t have to learn it day one to learn simple frases. I think that’s the point he’s trying to make. Dive in and worry about the rest later 🤗
You dont just adopt the language easily ,it takes time for you to actually speak out the languange you're trying to learn
From my point of view, there are some psychological problems of learning the second, third and so on languages, because a person must overcome the patterns of his own mother tongue, including pronunciation of course. I think this is the main problem. Maybe I'm wrong ..
Every native speaker thinks their language is hard. But how hard it is to learn a language depends how similar it is to your native language.
Grammar is so important especially when the language is very dissimilar to yours like I’m learning Czech.
You’re right you can miss half the meaning of a sentence of le.g language if you you don’t know how to decline the nouns and pronouns. You can rite learn phrases but depending on the type of learner you are.
I speak 4 languages and i'm learning german, i'm a bit affraid of it but i'm gona do my best, this guy is an inspiration for me, I want to be like him and that's why i'm gona do my best to learn german and a lot of languages !
i know this is a typical question but on average how long has it taken you? i'm learning french and about a month in and still building vocabulary.
+cakes_lollies Well to speak spanish it tooks me 8 months, but now I speak it well. You can 'understand' a language and speaks it correctly in 3 months. Good luck !
+sherif matt thank you!
What methods were you using? I'm find French hard cause natives just push it all together
+Monique H Well honestly I don't use any methode but I have some "technics" I begin to learn the presentation; Hi my name is... I am 20 years old etc etc. Then I download 2 apps, one of conjugation and a dictionary. Then I try to learn the basics verbs; eat, drink, live, work. Yeah and don't forget; Writing is VERY important, it helps you to memorize. And don't worry for french it's a very simple language, tell ur self that when you'll learn french you can easly learn italian or spanish ;) Hope it helps =)
Not a polyglot or anything, but i've been about 4 months learning french and i've learnt a lot of vocabulary thanks to Memrise, also i'm watching a tv show in french (even though it's original language is english i managed to find it in french) and i'm reading le petit prince :) everything thanks to duolingo, memrise and alexa.

I'm so glad I watched this video, my previous experience with a TED Talk was more of a product than educational and it's made me wary of clicking on the videos. I'm trying to learn Finnish and while some of these rules are great for languages that are more popular, it's hard to find the resources and media needed to gain experience in that language. I've put a Finnish option on my computer and I follow Finnish tags on social media (namely suomipaskaa lol)but as far as music and video, that's going to be a bit harder to run into.
I appreciate the video and your time immensely, it's given me some things to mull over and think about while on my own polyglot adventure. Hyvää päivää!

What an adorable accent, pure and comprehensive english. I wish everyone who’s first language is English spoke like that. That would’ve been great for us, english learners.
Correct me please if I did mistakes :)
This really inspired me. I'm a current monolinguest learning Russian,Swedish,Spanish and Portugese. Yes I do realise learning 4 languages at once is a challenge. But I have the freedom to learn it whenever and however I want. At school you're forced to learn a language which you might not be interested in and you go over useless stuff again and again. I have bought a specific notebook for each language and I study for at least 30min a day. It is very satisfying to see how many pages I have done. My motivation? the freedom of when you are fluent. I look at people who are bilingual and see them speak to others, it's amazing. Plus I just love being able to travel the world being able to speak to the locals.
I bet you failed miserably.
If I may suggest, try to learn the romance languages first since you are already taking on Spanish and Portuguese. Adding french and Italian will be like value-add to what you already have. Bonne chance!
well?

How to learn any language easily ?
Step 1: stop viewing this video, instead, start studying languages.
HAHAHA
Not really, because for people who want to learn english watching this video is a way of learning.
There are TedX talks by native speakers of Mandarin, French, Egyptian Arabic and a lot more. They are really helpful in my language learning.
"make grammar fun" um, TELL US HOW lol
motivation is the key, keep in your mind the reason why you're studying that language...remember your goals
think of grammar as a series of elements and just playing around with it
I'm making fun of my suffering when i don't know the best way to put something in my sentence. Have to say it's quite working beside my decreasing confidence to speak with anybody every day
Lmao yesss!
Learn the basics then move to the real fun content, there you will experience more unknown grammar rules, learn some, forget others but dont get too stuck on it, keep going. It's bloody hard in the beginning but the content, your fluency and understanding keep getting better, even if you learnt one word a day.
The title is a bit of click bait. It is not about how to learn any language easily, but techniques to make learning more engaging and effective which is not the same thing. As someone involved in languages, I can say that individual aptitude varies greatly and highly influences how much one progresses. Most languages require a considerable commitment to get to an intermediate level of communication.

The most difficult one was the basque, because it's almost an independent language, but it wasn't that hard, really. Recently, I started learning japanese, and it's not that difficult, at least not as it seems. I know a pair of phrases and words already. Of course, I have a lot to learn, but I have the choice to learn what I like, and I won't fail myself. (My mother language is spanish)
*EDIT:*I forgot to mention It, I have a friend who talks like seven languages, like german, french, spanish, basque, english, japanese... So guys, is not that difficult :)
If I have wrote wrong any expression, let me know, please! ^^
Can you help me in learning English
I was learning German maybe 8 years ago, could be 10. In order to learn words I used to write small notes with the words and put them everywhere (on the objects that they represent) now, 8 years later I picked up German again, and without using the language at all during all these years I still remember words and phrases. I guess I repeated them enough times so they could lodge into my long-term memory. When I picked it up again I was able to just recall the words without even trying to recall them (I didn't know they were still there, in my mind). They were just somewhere there in a shelf inside my brain. I was really surprised because I've heard that if you don't use the language you forget it. Keep in mind I learned it about a month 8-10 years ago. So, yeah, repetition in the thing with languages. As the guy said surround yourself with the language. I find learning a new language fun and I love it. It's never boring to me. Also while learning say out loud the words and phrases, speak, so you could use all your senses.
Thank you, It was very helpful.
Another tip, get a friend who is also a polyglot or aspires to be, and study with them. Learn a language together, or even get tips from each other on different languages, and eventually practice with them whenever you speak with them. Insteal of talking to someone foreign, you have a friend to study with nearby!
When it comes to languages, some polyglots like Moses McCormick & Steve Kaufmann don't have perfect pronunciation in all the languages they speak. The main focus is to be able to speak and be understood by native speakers.
Exactly. I've heard Steve K speak French and I cringe. And considering he has spoken French for a number of years I'm a bit surprised that he doesn't sound better. However, in his defense, he can be understood but it does sound like he's butchering the language. :)
Learning to read & white a language fluently can be mastered in school but when it comes to speaking, some people will show their foreign accents. They need to make a conscious effort to get a language tutor to tone-down or eliminate some of their foreign accents.
Just as an example a man Gregory Rivers from Australia who lived in Hong Kong for over 20 years. He worked mostly as an actor in Cantonese for TVB. He married a local Chinese, speaks, read & write in Chinese as well as in English. Being a TV actor he had to read scripts in Chinese and learned many characters along the way. When he first landed in Hong Kong, his Cantonese was understandable but not as fluent. Listening to his TV interviews in Cantonese you can't really tell him from a native-speaker with many local expressions in his speech. Compared to someone born in Hong Kong or a person who moved to the city as a young child, there is definitely a hint of foreign accent since he relocated in his early 20s.

Yes, agreed, but like you said, a person has to make a conscious effort to find a tutor, or even travel to the country and spend some time there. I am learning French and Dutch right now but I plan on spending next summer in both countries. One month in the south of France and one month immersed in Dutch in the Netherlands. Me and my boys will be going. And heck, I'll bet you if I take a trip up to Paris after my time in the South the Parisians will laugh at my southern accent. LOL.
I'll say this. I do admire all of these people for learning languages. There something amazing that happens when you learn a new language. Beyond that fact that your brain grows larger, it just happens to be a lot of fun.
So on this, we who call ourselves Bilingual, Trilingual, or beyond, have much larger brains that the average person walking around and this has been scientifically proven. And this gives us one up on everyone else.
@@shk00design I see nothing wrong with a slight accent when someone speaks. For example Germans and Swedes learn English at 5 years old until adults and still have an accent but their pronunciation is perfect and that's what matters, unlike someone from China who say words like aluminum like aruminum and thousand like wousand. That's when its butchering the language and seriously needs practicing but idk if you can change that.
One other useful tip that he kinda covered, but not really:
When watching a show with English subtitles, it helps in learning a language - but it's not the best way to go about it. If possible, it's best to try and get subtitles in that language, and not only watch the show but also read the subtitles in that language. It's good for intermediate learners.
Netflix has a lot of series they've been working on, and one nice thing about that setup is they generally dub and create subs for many of the shows they have. Not all, but many. It's a good source for learning.
Thank you! I definitely gonna start.
and you will be greatly disappointed.
When he said "Aurélia" he truly sounded Portuguese, im impressed
It’s funny - everything I’ve learned in my life had similar principles as this. Excellent stuff
Es curioso, todo lo que he aprendido en mi vida tiene principios similares a este. Cosas excelentes

Bende!
i've already did this before and i speak now 6 languages Arabic-english-italian-spanish-french-chinese as i never start with alphabets just try to get words ,most important terms of of use and later try to make a sentences with these words,,listen to music even you don't understand but make yourself understanding try to get any word from the song or you can translate it to your native language until you can sing it and you know it's meaning and here it's very good step ,,also something very important is you must love that thing you are learning whatever it is and you will get it either a language or anyother lesson, without giving it a love you won't get it.
lol it's funny how Algerians ''speak'' French
Just GREAT! Thank you so much ✨
This is spot on advice. Top shelf stuff.
I can speak fluently 4 languages and can't possibly learn anymore, and can't imagine how anyone can realistically claim to speak more than that. In my case it's a continuous challenge to keep all of them at a decent level. Our brain in this regard is like a muscle that needs regular intensive exercise to KEEP each language. It is also like a vessel with a limited capacity shared by languages you speak. Multilingual people would understand what I mean.
Both of your points have scientific evidence against them, it's been show that we don't forget things that the memories and connections just get weak, and they have found no evidence of a limit to the amount of knowledge you can learn.
I get you. The biggest problem I have is not to swap words or syntax from one language to another.
Bro, do you even youtube ?
Look at lingualtraveler he speaks 12
John Wick I speak 5 fluently. I can tell u why. My mother tongue is Czech (1. Czech). I was born and grew up in Switzerland (2. Swiss-german). In Swiss schools you are thought in german (3. German). At the age of 14 I started to binge english RUclipsrs/series and made lots of english speaking friends (4. English). In Switzerland french is obligatory from the age of 11. I’m now 19 years old. I know live in Paris since a month and will for 5 more (5. French). There you go. I rly rly wanna learn more languages; Currently learning Chinese. It also seems impossible to me but Im not gonna give up
The more languages you know, the more HUMAN you are.
Interesting, so people who only speak one language are....less human? Sorry, I mean, less HUMAN?
John Roberts yes
I don’t understand this logic but high 5
NANI!?

yay, i'm sub-human!
Learning languages is a great hobby to have, its challenging but very rewarding, I did very bad in school and really only focused on English when I was there. I went 5 years after school thinking I will never speak another language and then I decided to learn German when I went to zurich, I learnt it within a year and I can now hold a conversation, I'm now learning Portuguese at a course and met a lot of like minded people. My memory and learning strategy's have got better aswell.
Hey I want to learn German too.
I would love to hear some tips from you. :)
@@jc.nidzzzz focus on the verbs first, and der, die, and das also. Try and learn atleast 30 nouns for each gender and if your in conversation and don't know the gender off a noun then ask but sometimes you can get away with saying "d" if your not able to ask.
German has alot of words that's in English you need 2 words too a full sentence to explain. Learning those gives a good impression.
Try and learn a little bit each day and repeat what you learnt in the past so you don't forget anything. It helps to have a friend who speaks German to ask. You can get very creative with German once you know the basics but it's always good to ask a German if it's something that is correct to say. But yea if you are starting from scratch learn the verbs first and the structure of ich,du,er/sie/es,ihr,wir,Sie
In formal situations or When speaking to someone who is older or higher in the hiarchy address them with Sie not du (sir/madem not you)
I wrote that a bit scattered and unordelly but I hope it helps you atleast a little
@@oliverfinnegan3395 Thank you so much Oliver, it indeed helped me. I will use your tips. Let me search for German friends though.
You helped a lot, Danke! :)
@@oliverfinnegan3395 but Most differences between english and German you've found. Concentrate on Words that are only slight different: Bus and bus, Licht and light. They are spoken different but written similarly.
You're simply excellent and awesome Matthew!!!
