Heh, great reaction! If it helps you feel better about the very end: the top isn't actually Cobb's totem - it was his wife's totem. Cobb's actual totem is his wedding ring: in dreams, he's wearing it (because as he said, in dreams they're still together), and in the real world he's not wearing it. At the end, he's not wearing it, so we can safely assume he actually DID escape back to the real world. :)
WOW, I didn't pick up on that. NICE catch!
@@AwesomeUSMovies I saw this movie little after it came out, and NOW I'm finding this out. 🤯 Thanks guys!
I’m pretty sure this was debunked, since a totem is an item, not a lack of an item.
The fact that a - the children haven’t aged. They’re in the exact position that he remembers. And b - we NEVER see him spin the top after he goes into the drugged sleep toward the beginning of the movie (he tries once and accidentally drops it) makes me think that not only is he still asleep, but that most of the movie was a dream.
@@jennv2948 Michael Cain's character is only ever in scenes which are in reality so that along with the wedding ring theory makes it highly likely the scene was real
@@jennv2948 The children have actually aged. If you check out the credits, there are different actors for the kids (Phillipa at age 3 and 5, and James at 20 months and 3 years old). It's subtle, but you can also see that their clothing changes. They made it very similar, but the kids are wearing the exact same outfits the entire movie- the same ones they were wearing the last time he saw them, and in the final scene they are slightly different (specifically note Phillipa's sleeves).
"Mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling."
I love this line. It can be applied to anything.
it's a great line
Shutter Island is another great Leo DiCaprio movie, hope to see a reaction to it
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
Yes!!!!!!! It’s an awesome movie!!!
I honestly don’t understand why people like that one so much.
I just watched that with “Just Trust Ash” I thought I had seen it b4 but I guess only parts of it! I really liked it a lot♥️! ✌🏻☀️
Yes! Shelter Island is another great mind bending movie.!
I watched this in the theater and the entire audience loudly reacted to the scene fading to black without showing what happened to the totem. Myself, I was speechless, in disbelief that they ended it that way, lol.
Love the twist
"Here comes the water"...
15 minutes later
"Here comes the water"....
15 more minutes later
"Oooh, here comes the water"...
My favorite part is when Leo & Ken wake up in a plane. That piercing Leo's stare 'Is he sane? Will he make a call?' and that Ken's stare full of complete disbelief 'OMG! I'm here? I'm here!' Just few seconds, but they're so great.
Every movie by Christopher Nolan is A+. His recent "Tenet" is another completely mindbending stuff, but even his early 'Memento' is just as great.
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
James, you gotta react to Memento. If there’s anyone’s reaction to that movie I want to watch, it’s yours because I know it’ll genuinely be the first time you’ve seen it.
@@te1013 2nd this
*it's been on his loooong list for a while. Lol
@@AwesomeUSMovies Nolan is an animal. His whole filmography is worth it but I think his best is The Prestige
@@johnhoglund5580 the prestige has one annoying flaw that really ruins the film tbh. memento is much better
Nominated for 8 Oscars including Best Picture but won for
Best Visual Effects
Best Sound Editing
Best Sound Mixing
Best Cinematography.
It lost the other Oscars to The King's Speech.
It was crazy good
I lost all respect for the Oscars that year for not nominating it's Director Christopher Nolan. You nominate it for everything else and not the MAIN DUDE??
@@balerion77 he has to direct a movie like Power of the Dog or Nomadland to be nominated for best director both of which are well made and have social commentary but are stiff and boring.
Thanks for brightening our day, James!
My pleasure!!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I already loved the filmmaking of Christopher Nolan since I watched "Memento", & this totally blew my mind. Now I watch everything Christopher Nolan makes. He's a phenomenal filmmaker.
These styles of movies were popular at this time with the dream altering world; Matrix & Total Recall & Inception draw off concept. I enjoy all the different twist that leaves you asking questions about if it was real or just a dream. Thank for reacting to it.
You'd love Interstellar (2014) and Arrival (2016). Both are sci-fi and mind bending in the best way!
Added
Such a good ambiguous ending
It was crazy good
Inception is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time. The story, performance's, music, images, direction, action sequences, and cinematography was spectacular and phenomenal. It also identifies and analyzes the boundaries of perception and perspective between reality and fiction. It was decent. To this day I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old. 😍😎👍💯
This is my favorite movie!! I really really enjoyed your reaction.
In response to the end, there were actually two sets of kids cast for younger/older James and Philippa. And if you Google pictures of their scenes side by side, you can tell they’re older at the end and clothes are slightly different. Also, the top doesn’t even remotely wobble in the dream, it stands straight and looks almost still as it spins. The top at the end makes a large circle at first, and slightly wobbles before the movie cuts. This plus the theory of cobbs wedding ring/guilt being his totem instead, leads me to believe the end is reality.
I recommend Tenet and Interstellar (really all Nolan films) for you to watch. They’re just as mind-bending. Absolute blasts. Thanks for your videos! :?
Added thanks
james, you remind me of how navy chiefs are: kind and thoughtfully friendly. i would call you "sir" but i was born in 77 so we're about the same age, i grew up with the 3 channels too and now TV has guys like you having fun with cool movies... i love the internet
Great to hear it
Seeing your enthusiasm was lovely. Thank you for sharing it with us! :)
My pleasure!
Loved this reaction and I love how you really understood the concept and the layers of the kicks and everything. You really pay attention. This was a good one!
So... you loved this movie... that's great. :) Nolan is one of my favorite directors. I've recommended basically his whole filmography before so I think it's all already on your list, but if you want to watch something of his that's similar you could try out Memento, The Prestige, or Tenet...
I'll check it out!
Those three are awesome movies. I like Inception of course, but I'd like it better without Leo.
You should watch "Catch me if you can" it's with Leo DiCaprio and my boy Tom Hanks
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
Seeing this in the theater was such an experience. Director Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors ever (Top 5 for sure). I loved the story that is built up in this film and the level of creativity that is put into every scene. The special effects, the story, the cast, and the suspense help to craft such a unique film and one that is fun to go back to. Leonardo Dicaprio is especially good in this film.
James , this is a fantastic movie. It’s one you have to pay attention to because of all the levels/layers.
I was completely blown away when I saw this at the theater.
Im glad you checked it out.
I very much enjoyed it
@@AwesomeUSMovies I watch a whole lot of reviews and other stuff on RUclips. But I will say you are the only one that has reply to my comments on more than one occasion. Inception one of Christopher Nolan great movies, like I could rewatch this for thousand time and I still stunned by how this thing is great
I really did enjoy your reaction. This movie is one of the best modern sci films.
You remenber me the first time I did see Inception, i was with my dad (RIP) and i remember his facial expressions through de whole movie.
Keep going with this journey. Sure that your channel is going up and it continue will.
Thank you so much for watching. I hope you check out some of my other reactions.
This movie exist because of the phenomenal mind of its director, Christopher Nolan. He is really good with time jumps and strange concepts. I recommend that you watch his first and I think best movie, "Memento (2000)." He also known for his Batman Trilogy of movies -- "Batman Begins (2005)," "The Dark Knight (2008)," and "The Dark Knight Rises (2012)" -- which are a very realistic take on Batman and his villains.
You’re so sharp. I was a bit confused the first time I watched it. It took a second viewing for me to get the whole story. You picked everything up the first time. Smarty pants. Love your channel!
Thanks... Big brain working hard on that movie
Hey James, "Memento" by Christopher Nolan (same director as Inception) is even more mind bending and crazy awesome than Inception! Highly recommend you watch it! Will rock your world
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
Memento to this day is still my favorite from Nolan's !
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
Christopher Nolan is an absolute genius - he's pretty much given free reigns to do whatever he wants to make. His newest movie is "Tennet" you should watch it too - make sure you have a bright clear mind that day - it's going to demand a lot of focus to understand everything. Also there's "Oppenheimer" coming from Nolan soon ... 😉😉
Ehh, he ripped Inception's concept off from the Anime Movie, "Paprika". Right down to the hotel sequence!
It was great
Nolan seems to have a real fascination with Time.
The Matrix is a must
It was just as crazy at this movie.
@@AwesomeUSMovies The Matrix blew people away, it was a milestone because of the effects and concepts in the 2000s, and imo what was The Matrix for the 2000s, this movie was for 2010s :)
It’s over 10 years later and I still can’t get my head round this film… and I have a degree from Cambridge university….😂😂😂😂
It blew everyone away in theater watching this movie. If they had these machines, I totally would dream in my off time all the time.
The ending has bothered me for years. I always hoped he wasnt dreaming. But after reading that comment below I feel so much better. Didn't notice the ring at all 😂
James! I just discovered your channel recently and so happy I did. I love watching my favorite movies with you! Also, your knowledge of cars cracks me up because you always throw in some tidbit when it comes to cars. Hope to see your channel grow. Here are some reccomendations:
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
Splash (1984)
Point Break (1991)
The Conjuring (2013)
The Man with One Red Shoe (1985)
Thanks, I've added all these to my list. It's appreciated
Interesting theory: the whole film is a dream. Cobb is stuck in a dream that he believes is real, just like his wife was (or maybe he just dreamt that whole subplot, as it happened in a dream within a dream in this version of the story), and there is an inception team at work trying to perform inception on him, to plant the idea in his mind that he needs to wake up.
There is actually a lot of different things that point to this being true throughout the film, but it is a contentious theory and I'm sure someone will comment here saying I'm wrong and perhaps cursing me out. But personally I think this makes a lot of sense. (more than the version of the story where they are awake and running around Mombasa getting chased by nameless thugs, and some random Japanese businessman can get you quietly pardoned for murder after making a single phone call)
There are certain lines repeated several times in the film, at different dream levels, and by different characters, that seem to correspond with the theme of this idea that they're trying to implant in Cobb's brain, just like there were different variations on the basic idea that they were seen trying to plant in Cillian Murphy's (the target's) mind about his relationship to his father.
Maybe
Entire ending is a big red herring since it's made clear that the top *IS NOT* his totem so it doesn't matter if it falls over or not.
Doesn't stop everyone from completely forgetting that and talking endlessly about what that means. Genius.
Love it, thanks. Great twist
1) Cain’s character is never in any dreams, as he was told when he asked the director
2) The totem is not his, it’s his wife’s. His totem is actually his wedding ring which he only has on during the dreams. The end scene he isn’t wearing the ring.
The ending is 100% not a dream
cool thanks
Lord I gotta watch this one again…I was all over the place! Lol 😂 ✌🏻☀️
This film is a mind bender! so many little details to ponder about!
The top falls over in the post credit scene. At least that's what's in my head 😭
someone said, his wedding ring is his real totem and since it's missing at the end it's real life.
Love the intro to all your videos on how you used to ride bulls etc, big up your damn self!
WHAT???? I never road bulls. LOL Chickens, big chickens. I rode those all the time.
You should also watch "This Boy's Life", "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "The Basketball Diaries", "Marvin's Room" and "Shutter Island" all starting Leonardo DiCaprio. Great movies.
James' head literally exploded at the end.
AGREED! 100000%
1. The Other Guys - 2010
2. The Departed - 2006
3. The Hateful 8 - 2015
I just subscribed last night 😂
Thanks, I've added all these to my list. It's appreciated
Loved this movie as it was a mind trip and you need to think. :) Fun fact I am actually friends with Joseph Gordon Levitt who plays Arthur :)
That’s cool man =D Would he consider this movie a high point in his career?
Well tell him he did an amazing job. WTG!
@@AwesomeUSMovies I sure will. I really enjoy this channel and your reactions so much
To this day I am not sure about the ending, but I love it. If you enjoyed this one I would suggest Prestige
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
Fun reaction! I’ll recommend Catch Me if you Can (on your list), if you want to see Leonardo at his best. The movie is based on a true story of a young man determined to succeed in life by pretending to be a pilot, a doctor, etc. It takes place in the 50s/60s so you get cool outfits and cars. 😀
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
This was one of those movies I didn’t see until a couple years after it came out, and was simultaneously stoked on it and bummed I’d waited so long to see it. 😂 Also a little bummed I didn’t get to see it on the big screen. But I’ve watched it a couple dozen times since, and introduced it to a lot of other people.
An amazing Leo DiCaprio film from 2015 based on a true story of frontiersman Hugh Glass in 1820s Missouri, that won a bunch of Oscars, including a best actor finally for Leo, and cinematography, is The Revenant. It’s an amazing film that only gets better the bigger the screen you can view it on. Haven’t seen anyone react to it yet.
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
The totem does start to wobble.
Agreed
So many levels! Such a deep dive into the dream world. Such a great movie
Such an interesting movie, eh? I truly enjoy viewing your perspective on all these movies!!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!
Nolan himself believes Cobb made it back to the real world.... but he also insists that it is indeed open for your interpretation.
Well he left the barn door wide open
Another great movie, going to enjoy watching this again 💪🏽😎🎥
I love how much you enjoyed this fantasticly entertaining movie 😁. Well done Sir 🥰😊
Thank you so much 😁
Great video as always!
You can never go wrong with a Christopher Nolan movie. You need to watch all of them especially Interstellar and The Prestige.

Love the Channel!
Haven't watched this reaction yet, but am going to in a while after I finish a bit of chores. I already know you're gonna love this one! There are tons of mind-blowing movies from Nolan, I'm sure you're gonna love most (if not all) of them! He also directed a batman trilogy (a reboot), it's going to be fun! Can't wait for you reaction for those too. :D
Side note: as many people have been boggled about the ending for years and everybody seems to be talking about it until today still - some people haven't realized that Nolan pulled the greatest inception on us, the audience. LOL
Love that!
the End is REALITY, if you notice Michael Caine ALWAYS appeared in the movie in the "real world" never a dream. So to me the ending with Caine tells you its real.
you don't know that. The entire film could be a dream, with Caine being one of the people trying to incept Leo into thinking that he needs to wake up.
*SPOILER*
Nope, the childs haven't aged a bit. They look the same just as he remembering them. This is a clear proof that it's not real
@@pray4x did the movie tell us how much time elapsed between Mal's death and when the story takes place?
Someone commented that his real totem is his wedding ring. Whenever he sees his wife he has it on. At the end he doesn't have it anymore.
@@angelagraves865 at least years
Unsure if you watched to the end of the credits, but I like that the stinger song seems to indicate that you and the audience are about to wake up soon
Oh no I missed it
I heard a speculation of the ending on a different channel, so I'm not trying to plagerize, but the grandest part of the story that I think a lot of us missed, while we are obsessing over that final shot, wondering if it was still a dream, is that it doesn't matter. Cobb spends the entire film questioning reality. Everytime he awakes, he immediately spins the top, nervous and sweaty, so unsure of what's real. In that final shot, when he finally sees his children's faces, he finally forgets about the spinning top, he doesn't care anymore, he has accepted his reality, and that is his completed character arc in the film. And then, I think the director put the wedding ring clue in the movie as well, for those who just HAVE to know. I, myself, kind of really admired that they left it in the air like that, a very gutsy way to end the film.
I think there is a 50% it was real
Tom Hardy had a very small role in Black Hawk Down, but he was much younger and almost unrecognizable. You should know Joseph Gordon-Levitt from watching your 3 channels, because he was the kid on 3rd Rock From The Sun. If you don't have any sort of appreciation of the rest of them, you soon will.
Added to my list, thanks for the suggestion.
what you noticed at the end about his kids being the same age is also a big clue pointing toward the whole film being a dream.
agreed
except that the kids do age. If you pay attention to the credits (or look it upon IMDB) you'll see that there were two different actors for each of the children, and they list their ages- the ones at the end are 2 years older than the ones shown throughout the movie as memories
Love Inception. Matrix will blow your mind too hehe. The guy who directed Inception also did Interstellar, which might be the coolest, mind bending space movie ever! If u liked Inception you'll definitely like Matrix and Interstellar
Lots to watch
His kids wouldn't change in age if it were his memories
Agreed, very trippy movie
Best DiCaprio films: Titanic, This Boy's Life, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Basketball diaries, Quick and the Dead, Catch me if you Can, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, Wolf of Wall Street.

Well thanks for that
I can only imagine how writing this in the meeting rooms would have went it must have been so confusing even for them to figure out it all and how it would flow lol on paper.
IDK, I think on paper this makes a lot more sense. Like with bullets... 1. Layer One, raining... 2. Layer Two, office building.. etc
Did you know that the 10, 2 and 4 on your shirt is from an early 20th century Dr. Pepper ad campaign that told Americans that 10 o'clock, 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock were the times of the day that a good working American would need a bottle of Dr. Pepper because those were the times of day that your energy would start to drag and you'd need a refreshing pick me up from a Dr. Pepper so you can keep on going till quitting time? Now you do! Cheers! A fellow Iowan.
Nope didn't know that thanks

Ken Wah-tah-nah-bee. The most prolific Japanese/American actor of our generation. One amazing action/drama period piece he did with Tom Cruise that I bet you would love is The Last Samurai. He’s also done a ton of Godzilla flicks. 😆
He was great

Commenting for the contest :)
Great reaction.....Nolans best movie
definitely a fantastic movie. But... Nolan's best? Highly debatable. His entire resume is fantastic. Memento, The Prestige, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Insomnia... all arguably as strong as this film. And Tenet is his most ambitious.
