    According to Nolan, here is the meaning of the ending:
    It’s not whether or not he’s dreaming that’s important but rather that Cobb is happy where he is, even if it is just a dream.

    • @Doofster
      @Doofster 11 месяцев назад +2

      I always saw it as he didn't see his kids faces in the dream, but at the end he does. But then again there's the ring, and according to Cain he was told any scene he's in in reality

  • @aidarosullivan5269
    @aidarosullivan5269 Год назад +15

    Two little things to blow your mind:
    1. Cobb had 2 totems, actually. The top was to determine whether he was in someone else's dream. The wedding ring was to check if he was in his own dream, when he was still married to Mal.
    2. There's strong evidence that Fisher wasn't the real target of inception, but Cobb was. And the real inceptor is Ariadne, who methodically implanted the idea that he must forgive himself and let go of Mal.

  • @bamflyer
    @bamflyer Год назад +33

    The best take on the ending is that whether its a dream or not is irrelevant because cob was finally happy and was with his kids, to the point where he didn’t even care to check. But also the fact that it wobbles means it will fall eventually. That’s may opinion, the other scenes it spins perfectly.

    • @djjackson8750
      @djjackson8750 Год назад +1

      my theory is that the wedding ring is his totem like he mentions - only he knows what it feels like, so at the end whether his wife's spinner totem wobbles or not, doesn't really matter. whether he has the ring on or off - let's him know if he's dreaming. So i think at the end, is real.

      @@NovaLena22I can see where you would understand this 🤔..
      And yes the Matrix came out tens before this movie(the last one came out a year ago) and they aren't even finished with the series yet ..
      They will be recasting everyone cause people have either retired,don't want to come back,moved on to other projects or their character was killed off or died..
      These were my favorites from the Matrix: Switch(which she shouldn't have died but it's whatever) the kid who built the woman in the red dress program, and youngster you see in matrix 3 movie(whom tried to save Captain Mafune,a senior captain to Commander Locke the ex to Captain Naomi aka Jada Smith) the youngster and the older captain got overwhelmed by machines,he survived and quoted "I believe in you Neo" and blow up the gate way where the machines where trying to get it.. he survived of course by the writers just killed him for no reason(I would've loved an arc just on him alone 😢)
      The fact Trinity and Neo are now god's is ridiculous hahaha 😅..
      And that Smith became a friend or even more Rogue cause he doesn't have a place within the Matrix anymore is stupid too. And I don't like how they did the French program(making him look like train conductor who was a trash anyways 😅) ..

    Nolan's official position is that it kinda doesn't matter whether it is real or not, Cobb has found peace. But remember, the top isn't Cobb's totem, it's Mal's. So it's not particularly trustworthy anyway. I saw a thing suggesting his wedding ring is his actual totem, and that's a pretty compelling idea, because he never wears it is the real world. If that is true, he'd be in the real world at the end of the movie.
    Nolan is one of the last few amazing film makers left. Tenet is a fun ride. Not as many familiar faces, but there are some.

    No, this movie didn’t confuse me for a second, but I’ve been a hyper-lucid dreamer all my life, and I often have nightmares (I can’t watch horror movies). I don’t get much actual rest at night because I’m completely aware that I’m dreaming, constantly changing my surroundings, rewinding, redirecting conversations, etc. Watching this movie the first time, I was pointing at the screen saying, “That’s just what it’s like! That’s what happens every night!” In that recurring nightmare where someone is chasing me, a dream that ends horrifically if I’m caught, I make a cliff or a deep hole appear and I jump. If you die in a dream but don’t wake up, your mind generates a new dream. Problem solved.

    One of the fascinating things to me what Christopher Nolan did with the music. The music was the same song all the way throughout each of the levels. But, the song was slowed down to match the depth of the dream level. Hence why in the snow fortress there were a lot of deep bass notes, because the song was slowed down so far.

    It was a bit easier for me to follow because i regularly have dreams within a dream (i think it’s really called a false awakening) where I think I’m awake and I get out of bed, head to the bathroom to wash my babe and shortly realize I’m still sleeping - usually right before someone tries to kill me
    I have little tips and tricks for checking to see if I’m sleeping, (example counting your fingers) only hard part is that your mind will learn those tricks and they won’t work forever - you have to constantly come up with new ones

    Hard to say if it wouldn’t have happened tragically anyway.
    Whatever it is about Mal’s personality they makes her want to avoid reality in the first place was probably to blame, not just Dom trying to fix it

  • @campagnollo

    There is a totem at the end of the film that determines dream/reality, but it’s not the top. But to put a itch on your brain, it was visible throughout the film, even more so than the top.

    • @cmac3530
      @cmac3530 Год назад +1

      Remember, you can't tell anyone else about your totem or else it becomes meaningless. The top was Mal's totem which is why Cobb is able to use it to explain what totem's are. He has his own totem that he keeps a secret verbally but, is on-screen and consistent throughout the movie.

    • @realSimoneCherie
      @realSimoneCherie Год назад

      The totem doesn’t determine freaks from reality it only tells you that you’re not in someone else’s dream. Telling people about it isn’t the issue - allowing others to use it, is.

    • @cmac3530
      @cmac3530 Год назад

      @@realSimoneCherie Then you clearly didn't understand Mal's totem. It's a top that only stays spinning when Mal manifests that in the dream. In the real world no matter how hard she would try to manifest a spinning top it would still always topple. Thus grounding her to reality.
      If someone else in the dream understands that if the top falls then Mal will believe she is in reality they can manifest that to make that happen.
      This is basically what happened to Mal. She willingly chose to lock the top away in her subconscious which Cobb then broke in and found it. He then manifested the top spinning forever which, he then instructs Mal to find.
      When she found the top spinning in her subconscious she then knew that her world (Limbo) wasn't real and they had to kill themselves to get back. But, because Cobb tricked her subconscious instead of her awake brain, that belief followed her into the real world.
      So, you're right in a sense. Just telling someone "My totem is a loaded die" is completely harmless because you don't know which way it is loaded. There are multiple answers for what the Totem could be.
      The top only has 2 states, spinning or not spinning. So, by explaining that specific totem it becomes obsolete as anyone sharing the dream is then able to make it topple in the dream. Thus causing the owner of said totem to question their reality.

    This is a movie that definitely needs rewatching to catch all the pieces and figure out all the parts (like you were wrong about the first level, they were in Fischer's dream, not Eames as you said).
    I personally believe that everyone is actually wrong about the movie's plot. Fischer isn't the target, COBB is. The reason why Ariadne learns so quickly to manipulate dreams is because she's the actual Extractor, not Cobb, she's trying to perform inception on Cobb so that he can get over his guilt for Mal's death and return to his family. Ariadne's the one that came up with the idea to save Saito, she's the one that told Cobb she has to tell someone about Mal and his guilt, because she had to keep prodding Cobb to plant the idea that he needed to move on.

    As others have said, It doesn't matter if the top fall or stays up, either way, Cobb gets to watch his kids grow up and it will be real to him. If it's the real world, great. If not then the dream has become his reality and as the old make says in the place in Mombassa, who are we to say otherwise?
    My take is this, Ariadne (whose name comes from Greek mythology after the woman who gave Theseus the clue that led him out of the Labyrinth) was performing Inception on Cobb to get him to forgive himself for his role in his wife's death. She was likely "hired" by Michael Caine's character. Note that whenever Cobb is in the dream he has his wedding ring on as a representation of his guilt (he doesn't wear it in the real world), but at the end, he's not wearing it because he has forgiven himself and moved on to be with his kids.
    On another layer, the entire film is a meta argument that all films are like shared dreams.

    Although Cobb spins the top at the end to check his experience for authenticity, he is immediately interested only in his children and does not watch the top. What counts for the character at this moment is only his subjective perception and this is after all also a form of reality. This challenges our objective reality to some extent. Dreams, virtual worlds and other illusions are clearly a part of our real-life perception and provide completely genuine emotions and impressions - who wants to decide that these perceptions have to be subordinate to an allegedly only true reality?
    Most recently, actor Michael Caine, who portrays Dom Cobb's father, gave a statement on the final scene. He himself was confused and could no longer distinguish which scenes are real and which only take place in a dream. Director Chris Nolan told him, "When you're in the scene, it's real."
    Before your head explodes and the film won't let you go!

The reason the train woke up Cobb and his wife is because they were using a different substance. Cobb and Sato, when they died, I believe went to a deeper level and Cobb's was him being allowed to come back into the country and see his children and be with his family. Those are my thoughts at least. Glad you enjoyed the movie; keep up the great reactions.

    Another awesome "is it real or not" Leo DiCaprio movie is "Shutter Island" directed by Martin Scorcese. Mark Rufalo and Ben Kingsley are also in it. Truly an amazing movie that I think could become one of your all time favourites.

    I love Christopher Nolan, and I’ve never had a problem understanding any of his movies on the first watch. Except for Memento. I couldn’t follow Memento to save my life even after watch RUclips videos that break it down. If you struggled to follow this one, you might avoid Memento. Also, maybe controversial opinion, but I prefer Inception to Interstellar. It’s in my top 20 for sure

    The end is real. The totem was wobbling and would have tumbled. In a dream, the totem NEVER wobbles, it's steadily spinning.
    The end is real life.

    I won't tell you if he's in the real world or not. I will tell you, whenever you re-watch it, look at when his wedding ring is on be it in the dream or in the real world. Then look at his ring finger in the end of the movie and you'll see

    Now remember the top was his wife's totem and not his. Leo's totem is theorized to be his wedding ring.
