    Before you complain about his shifting i hope you realize that backwards shift pattern would mess you up too. He’s driven a truck successfully like that for years. That pattern really messes with your brain. The delay for you to think about what your getting ready to do backwards is very difficult.

      The bus may have been sitting for a while, have to cut the guy some slack. A little double clutch action, practice makes perfect.

      He will get it, Skip shifting will help, no need for the clutch, when the RPM's are right it will drop right in.

      He will make a great repeat customer for the transmission change or differential repairs. It’s a Detroit it will shift easily going to 2100 at least.

    The guy who taught me to drive trucks was very firm on reminding us newbies to always have two hands on the wheel. A few months later my friend Wally was driving an old Mack and the front wheel came off. He said if he had not had both hands on the wheel he would have lost it.

    That backward shift pattern would only be be easy for someone who has never driven anything with a typical arrangement , trying to unlearn and relearn all at the same time is really difficult I would think !! Keep us up on your travels , thanks for the video!!

    I still can't get over how many people own one of these large passenger coach style buses. The are quite a challenge to maneuver in traffic or tight places. And most people simply cannot work on the engines, transmissions or suspensions. But it sure looks tempting to own one - and once they are out on the open road, they are magnificent touring vehicles.The work Scott does is so very rewarding - they are always glad to see him show up --- 😁

    I can't get over how quiet the engine is up in the cab area. Nice job! Oh and I don't drive a stick very much anymore but I can see how that pattern would hard to do, too!

    Once you understand the mechanical relationship between engine RPM / transmission / gear ratio/ and road speed, you can float the gears on ANY vehicle. It is easier on diesel powered equipment due to the slower RPM range / change, but even a gas powered pickup truck can be "floated", as has to be done when the clutch goes out and you still have 400 miles to go 'til home !!! I was lucky to have a very mechanically minded and seasoned driver teach me on an old White / Western Star, way back when I was only knee-high to a grasshopper. Many mechanics are great at repair work, but it takes a trained and understanding mindset to achieve smooth and quiet clutch-less gear changes. With proper training and some practice, a lot of drivers can master this, but some just never "get it". Beautiful bus ... I hope someone spends the time with these drivers before they do serious damage and don't understand why.

    A very nice conversion, and I'd have been 'up the creek' with that shift pattern, too... The Torsilastic-to-airbag retrofit geometry may have been a "pain", however, that test ride was nothing short of a rousing success; it's great to see these classic motorcoaches 'so happily and successfully repurposed'!

    The world changes when you cross the Missouri River on interstate 90. Would like to see how the old Detroit pull that long hill after you cross the river. Lots of things to see on your way like Wall Drugs, 1880's town, deadwood, Devils tower. Love the black hills, owned property up by Devils tower and boon docked there for awhile after I retired. Wish I was traveling that way myself. Enjoy your trip, no breakdowns and look forward seeing some sites on the way.

    I could really tell the difference on what you did to his engine. It sounded really good. Those exposed spinning dive lines are really scary. Living in a farming area and owning tractors with PTOs, I have a VERY healthy respect for them even with shields. Loose clothing and inattention and your arm gets ripped off. Have a safe trip :)

    Scott... another great video, I look forward to see what you're up to, every day now.... you're "addicting". lol : ) I sure hope he gets the hang of shifting a simple 10 spd (and yes, I realize it's reversed pattern)... and stops pre-selecting the "high/low" range before he shifts, or he will find himself stuck in either side of the transmission when the piston calls it quits. I can't believe you drove right by the world famous I-80 TS & museum... unless you've been there & done that, before... ?? : )
    Just as a "heads up", Scott... and in case you're not aware (though you might be as they have a facility in Gary, IN) and might happen to be in need for some reason or other, and your going past or through Billings (MT)... just so you know, there is a big Detroit Diesel dealer in Billings heights just off I-90... the 1st exit AFTER the Flying "hook" (J) TS (on the east side of I-90) on the east side of Billings, as you're headed west at Exit 452... which is also the exit for hwy 87 north.
    It's part of Interstate Power Systems Group (they have 20+ locations in 11 Central & western states), and they still do a lot of the 2 cycle engines there at Billings, for Mining, Buses, Power Generation and Oil field... along with genuine DD Reliabilt Parts. Great bunch of folks there... Just so you know.
    Their at 1140 main st.(which is also hwy 87 north) - less than 5 min. from I-90 off the west bound side, again at Exit 452. In case you have an issue an need to call them... (406)- 252 - 4191 or (800)- 823 - 4334 (8am - 5pm Mtn. time).. but they have an after hours transfer on the calls for breakdowns, etc. etc. with mutilple road service rigs (and/or towing IF needed) and always have a mechanics on call 24/7.
    If in Mitchell, you must be headed over across through Rapid (& Sturgis) on I-90.... if you want to save about 90 miles of driving heading towards Billings... cut across 34 & 212 (through Belle Fourche - pronounced Bell Foosh)... the exit for hwy 34 is at Whitewood or you can go west a bit more to Spearfish, and just run Hwy 85 straight north into Belle Fourche ("Foosh"), through town (not a very big town at all... only a few stop lights)... as you're coming out of the north side of town, you will be going up a small incline, and will see a truck stop (use to be Texaco, not sure now) on your right and traffic light.. Hwy 212 will be a left turn at the light (at the Truck Stop).
    Stay on Hwy 212, it's good running all the way across to MT... and you will go through Wyoming for about 12 miles, then into MT..... STAY on 212... it will end at I-90 just south of Hardin, MT at Custers Last Stand (literally)... from there it's about 1 hour exactly to the junction of I-90 & I-94 (94 ends/begins there) on the east side of Billings at Lockwood. I used to truck out of Billings for years.... and the only people who follow I-90 all the way between Rapid City, SD & Billings, MT.... are those who don't know any better.... which is fine, it keeps the "4 wheelers" from under foot. lol
    They rebuilt 212 not that many years ago and widened it all out (it is a 2-lane), but there is Very Little traffic on that hwy with the exception of running through the Northern Cheyenne Reservation (not far from I-90 in MT.) for a short bit (pay attention to the posted speed limits through the "res" - they mean it!).
    It Will save you 90 miles of driving time cutting across 34 & 212.. or 85 & 212, whichever you prefer.... the trucks always ran 34 & 212 heading west from Rapid. Where it's necessary, there are passing lanes on the grades... but there is only a couple of them, and "most" of the semis that cut across that way are the "Bull Racks".... and they "rock & roll" through there... they are "geared to boogie".... and have more than enough power to do it... especially in the western states. Enjoy your cruise!... stay safe.

    If you have never tried it: Get a spray bottle and fill it with hydrogen peroxide. When you pull off for a break, spray the peroxide on the windshield, on the fresh bug splats. The peroxide will foam up and the bug splat will just fall off the windshield. I tried it for the first time this year and was amazed. But it only works on "fresh" bug splats not the old dried up ones.

    After having driven tractor - trailers since 1988, I would say that if I owned a bus like this I would prefer the 9 speed or 10 speed Eaton Road Ranger transmission. I don'r know anything about the Allison transmissions except I have an Allison Series 1000 transmission in my GMC pickup truck. I have driven the newer Detroit DT-12 transmission and those have a delay in engaging that is downright dangerous sometimes.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 5 лет назад +4

      It's a combination of a few different things. Putting dissimilar metals together is one. Road salt and other chemicals used to keep roads clear in the winter is another, and lack of ability or willingness to go underneath periodically to blast away the crap with a pressure washer is something that contributes, too. It's not easy to squeeze under a bus, but it's really helpful if you can get under there for both cleaning, and maintenance purposes. If a person had lots of time, or a mechanic to dedicate to looking after the bus, investing time into the bus will pay off in the return of time that the bus will be able to live and provide service. Actually, that philosophy applies to any vehicle. It sounds like a lot of work trying to keep up with them, but I've found that time invested as you go is always easier than waiting until the vehicle has begun to break down and then find that a whole lot of time, effort, and money is needed.

I know you prefer the straight 6's but the 8V71's I drove in coaches (buses) used to run smooth as silk, much smoother than any straight 6 and they used to do between 3 and 5 million miles between overhauls, but they didn't have turbos. Someone asked where Scott got his skills training to work on the old Detroit 2 stroke series diesels. I presume he got his hands on a Detroit overhaul manual, they take you step by step through the procedure but the first thing you learn is all the tools required are American, no millimeter nuts and bolts on GM buses. Your talking in excess of $10,000 for tools just to start being able to service your own coach which for Scott was a 4106, the PD 3751 came later. How did he get started as the Bus Grease Monkey?
    Watch this video posted by Scott and learn the whole story.
    Gents and ladies? It's a good one that begins at the 15:00 mark of the video.

    I wonder if it would be possible to come up with a mechanism to reverse the X and Y axis of that H pattern. Having a 10 speed in a bus is cool, but that pattern has to be HARD to get used to. Especially if you drive anything else with a standard H pattern.

      Clutch is for starting and stopping that's it

      shreddder999..... in his case, using the clutch or not... would not have helped. He was over-shooting the gate and was trying to get it into 2 gears up, from where he was.... and reving the engine to try and get it in... was the wrong thing to do in that case. Truck tranmissions (NOT the new AMT's that are ignorantly called "automatics" that do all the shifting for today's - Phony, wannabe "truck drivers") use Straight cut gears (Non-synchro), and using the clutch or not... will Not stop the grinding, if the engine rpms do not match the gear set speed on your shift (up or down).
      Either he forgot about testing the jake and didn't "arm" it... or, it wasn't working.... I suspect the former, considering that neither one of them said anything.

    I'm always surprised at how quiet these buses seem in the driving videos, especially yours and this one. Are these conversion buses heavily sound deadened or are old buses quieter on the inside than I thought?

    heh, Iowa-80, I've ordered LED replacement lamps from my 4103 from them. Now please don't ask me if I've installed them yet, or how many years ago that the order was received... 🙄

    Why is there a 13 speed shift lever on a 10 speed transmission? Red button is the high side splitter. Is it really just a 10 speed or is he not aware that's what that button is for? It won't do anything on the low side of the box.
    FYI If it was an 18 speed the left button would be blue, 15 speed would be black.

      J Griff I saw the same thing and had the same thought! They just don’t build busses like Lenny anymore, he is such a handsome hunk , I just can’t stand it!!!
      You ought to be very proud of yourself Scott for everything you and your son and wife have done for Lenny to get him back on the road and to the point he can burn these roads up again across this country!!!
      Well done sir!! I’ve got to get a patreon account set up soon!!!

      What happen simplicity? There was nothing wrong with cable driven. Now everything is servo and actuators. Diagnostic and repairing vehicles is so much more difficult with modern vehicles.

    Why is the shift pattern backwards ? Is that a linkage thing ? Also, that is a 13 speed valve on that shifter.

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  5 лет назад +2

      The trans is from a semi. It’s now flipped around backwards in the back of the bus.

      Driven plenty of fuller 10 speeds. I figured it was probably something like that. 13 speed would actually be even better. It would give him more on the top end, and increase his fuel mileage on the hiway. Thanks for responding.

    Why is the tranmission shift pattern backwards anyway? now my guess is that the transmission is facing backwards? I seem to remember last video someone said it was converted to a 10 speed and that the tag axle was flipped, was it flipped to adapt the transmission?

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  5 лет назад

      It’s a truck transmission that is supposed to be in front of the driver and it’s now behind, so it’s backwards.

    • @BusGreaseMonkey
      @BusGreaseMonkey  3 года назад

      That trans and engine came from a truck. It sits in front of you. If he sat backwards in his seat the pattern would be fine.
