  • This clip has something for everyone. Dirk Benedict and Richard Hatch in all their athletic glory and around the last minute and a half the beauty of Maren Jensen and Dirk Benedict without any dialogue.

It would make more sense if Triad had three teams all competing in the same game.

There's a Russian gane that's somewhat reminiscent of this. Like a combo of rugby & basketball.

Ever since the Coaches went on strikes due to the players union getting more money the game hasn't been the same.

Flynn: I watched this old video, it was a series that created a game called Triad. CLU, I want you to view and study this game. Make up a similar game for the grid.
CLU: Forgive me creator, but why do you insist upon me creating these human based "games"? I find no purpose in them, other than to distract one from their work. Are you sure of this command Flynn?
Flynn: CLU you have never questioned a command prior to this moment. Therefore I will forgive your questioning MY choices for the design of the perfect system, and offer you an explanation as to my reasoning. Games CLU, are FAR more than a distraction for most people. They are the outlet for creativity, strategy, and one of the primal foundations for human intellect. They offer the participant a chance to genuinely "win" at something. This can transcend to an more well rounded individual who can think, reason, and takes winning and losing with equal grace and aplomb.
CLU: So these "games" are the gateway to basically a human consciousness? (CLU ponders this new thinking). Very well Flynn, I will go on my way and design this "game" you have instructed me to. But if I may creator? May I express my creativity as well?
    Flynn: Of course!!!
CLU: (With a very slight hint of malice). Thank you creator. You have given me much to ponder, I hope my "games" help to make this grid the perfect system.
CLU (post Flynn): So my old friend, you wanted games? I think you will find my version of Triad a bit more "invigorating". Sadly, CLU was good to his word. His version of Triad basically involves a "ball" that can derezz an opponent with a simple command. Also, this Triad is four groups of three red suits each vs the same only with blue suits. The game is simple, shoot a gravity modified ball into a hole on three sides of the court. You drop the ball, you're derezzed (killed), you hold the ball too long, you're derezzed, you're struck with the ball, depending on which color the ball displays, you're derezzed. And of course, the entire Triad Arena is gravity modified. Discs are allowed to deflect an incoming ball. But only 3 times during a match. If you try to deflect the ball after 3 times, you're derezzed. CLU alone has participated in over 100 matches, always winning ,and having the highest derezz count of any team.

Edit: For anyone not familiar with TRON/TRON Legacy/TRON Uprising, derezz is short for deresolution. Basically it's a programs way of expressing death. To be derezzed is to be killed. And with CLU, killing is something he sadly and sadistically enjoys.

Richard Hatch once commented that the actors would actually play the game during lulls in filming, trying to develop rules for it.

In real life Boomer would be throwing the ball in from behind his back and doing a reverse dunk. I wonder what they would call a dunk in Galactica terms? Anti Gravity Hand Jam?

Saw this part as a kid in the early 80's and thought it was kool.
Still like it except for the men with near bikini bottoms 🤢
    I miss this show.

Me too, but you're right, why are they wearing sumo wresting type outfits. The 70s gym shorts were short enough.
