WOW. I can't believe this exists! My name is Cole, and I was at this show and it was INCREDIBLE. To say this was a super special show, is an understatement. It was the grand reopening of The Fillmore, which had closed after the 1989 earthquake that rocked the Bay Area. The lighting and visual show, as I herd it, was done by Pink Floyd's crew. I should say that the entire night was really special. The opening acts were 4 Non Blondes, Ry Cooder and American Music Club. Only 500 of the 1200 or so tickets sold to the public, with the rest being for friends, family, press and celebrities. I remember members of the Grateful Dead and Metallica walking around the room just as giddy as we all were to be in such a special event. I was/am a massive Pumpkins fan and I waited in line for hours in the early morning (like you used to have to do if you wanted to see a show), and I was the last person in line that got them. An acquaintance offered to buy my pair of tickets for $400 each, but I wouldn't miss this for the world. I still have the poster.... It was a show for the ages.. Last tidbit of cool about the show that I feel I should share... Right before the Pumpkins came out, the lights went dark and on the screen behind the stage they showed the infamous car chase scene from the classic movie Bullitt, which is set in San Francisco, and climaxes with Steve McQueen running the bad guys off the road, who explode in a ball of fire. At that moment, the lights came on and the band walked out.... hence the insane screaming that you hear when this video starts. God, what a show.... :)

+Rance Hamilton Kurt Cobain was average at best on guitar. I'm sure even he would have admitted that. Half that list was the persons persona and popularity over pure skill and songwriting chops.
+pelleman02wb Rating a guitarist is a highly dubious game to get into. I love the Smashing Pumpkins but I would rate Kurt Cobain over Billy in terms of guitar, purely because I prefer his riffs and songs and solos and noise. Obviously Billy is a much better guitarist in terms of skill, but that's a really bizarre way of looking at the guitar IMO. For example, there's a couple of guys in every guitar shop in the world right now that can play circles around Billy from a technical standpoint, but Billy writes infinitely better music than they do, so he's the one we give a shit about. It just so happens that a lot of the best writers tend to be technically very good guitarists, but it's the writing we're really rating.
I saw them on this tour too. I was also 18 and I had the same experience. I wish I would have known it back then that I was living the best times of my life.

Jimmy Chamberlin is amazing and fast a lightening. The thing that blows me away is, even when he's playing his craziest/fastest chops with SP, it looks effortless and you can tell he has a lot more in the tank than what he's putting on display. It's almost like their songs are too easy for him. It's insane.
I'm genuinely surprised with the incredible sound quality on this '94 recording. Jimmy's kit sounds amazing and the bass/guitars are at like the perfect levels. I love the Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie era Pumpkins when they still had the original 4 members and put on unforgettable shows like this.

As a long time bootleg collector and fan, this is indeed a gem, Soma as an opener is reason enough to dive into this gig plus the pro shot vid and audio. James and Billy's guitars are also mixed at proper equal volumes....this is a great capture. Although I will say like most great bands from this era, this (at least it appears to me) to be an average show for the band. Their not firing on every single cylinder. When they launch into Geek USA there is a bit of a strange feeling its not at their top level. Having said that there are some stellar moments. i wan't even born when these songs were made and I'm just now starting to listen to them. So far I've liked every song I've listened to from the smashing pumpkins. I've been listening to them on repeat.
I'm actually so old that I remember a time when Smashing Pumpkins weren't even a band. Disarm was the song that caught my attention. There was nothing like it on the radio at the time. From today's perspective, maybe it doesn't sound all that different from other rock songs, but back then it was a pretty bold song to put out. Ever since, I've been a fan. To be honest though, I haven't listened to much of what they made after the big break up (2000?) to CYR, their latest album. I do like CYR though, even though it's a quite different sound. I'm looking forward to hearing what they're currently recording. It's supposed to be back to the heavy guitars. We'll see.
I am 68 and heard some of their songs when I was younger but didn't pay much attention. Now I have really discovered them and I can't keep from listening to them. I love Jane's Addiction and when I saw them on You Tube together I was extatic.
Shoutout to the front of house engineer for nailing the sonics. It sounds great. Not sure if this was mixed for a video release or what but this is hell of a desk mix if this is what we’re hearing. Wicked.
This year was the best of the decade as far as live shows go. Pumpkins were great ambassadors of rock during this time along with so many, and I mean SO many other bands. Amazing time to be a kid and discover music, not like today
Truly a god like band during this time. No band has been able to convey teenage angst, the heartbreak the fuzzy romantic splendor of young love, the carefree joy of no responsibility; but also the sexual frustration and burst of melodramatic anger that punctuate one's adolescence in such powerful and timelessly nostalgic way. Plus, they looked cool as fuck and had the chops and creativity to back it up. This video is truly a time machine.
I just found my ticket stub from this show. I was a sophomore in college when I went to see the Pumpkins at the Fillmore reopening, after the big earthquake of '89. I recall tickets selling out in about two minutes to this show.

Kurt Cobain died a couple weeks earlier before this show. Such an exciting and sad time for grunge. I was born just five months later.. Wish I could've been there during those great years for music.
I used to follow them on tour from city to city with a group of buddies through the 90s. We were in our teens, and only now realize how good grunge/rock was back then
Glad you found the music even though it was a little before you arrived! I was at this concert as a freshman in college with a few friends. Unforgettable night.
4/25/94 I was 14, with my 14 year old friend being dropped off to a rock show in Dayton Ohio !! general admission = front row if you can run fast enough, which I did!!! Yes 14 years old & front row for THE SMASHING PUMPKINS! My friend was getting smashed so she had to be pulled from front row but I held strong & stayed for the whole show, even with that barrier being smashed into me becoming part of my body 😂😂😂 My life was forever changed that day! Pumpkins will hold a special place in my heart forever!!! Thanks for sharing
Wow, so cool. I was 19 the first time i got center on the barrier at Aragon Ballroom… waited from 7am in line to get that spot. Waiting in line at a SP show is a special type of badge of honor. 💜
WHOA!!! This is amazing. Even though I can just click on this and watch it for free all I want if they put this out as a physical release I'd but it in an instant.
AGREED! They also opened with Soma when I saw them at Lollapalooza a few months later that year. Absolute GENIUS song choice to start the set with. Soma settles the crowd down for a minute or so until it positively ERUPTS at the right moment! Maybe the most I lost my mind at any concert... actually, Teen Spirit at Nirvana in '93 was better. but it was close!
Lately, whenever I get a little drunk I end up watching vintage Pumpkins concerts on RUclips. I always wanted to play the bass like D'arcy when I grew up and have been fairly uninterested in this band ever since she left.
Im literally drinking some mixed drinks and decided to watch this. So, same here. Love the Pumpkins and can't help but go back to this particular period when I've had a few. Cheers.
They've released some interesting stuff since she left. Machina I and II are pretty good records and Zeitgeist has it's moments. This line-up is pure magic tho.
I like how they keep singing without small talks between each song. Like they really immerse themselves into an constant emotion. "Hush now don't you speak to me."
What a performance! This was two days before my 14th birthday. Learned the drums blasting Gish/Siamese Dream through my old CD player in my room on my old Pearl Forum kit. Jimmy was my flippin hero on drums- Geek U.S.A and Silverfuck... Holy crap gotta get those back in the regular rotation. Tristessa as well.
The recording is so clear!!! With that said, my friends and I went to this same show in San Antonio, Tx. It was an awesome experience. Funny thing, we were in the mosh pit and my friend head butted me and I had a bloodied bruised eye for the rest of the show. Memories
The 90's! When concerts was without all the lights from smartphones and you could actually enjoy this great music! I was hardcore fan in my youth, guess their music kept me alive in years of struggle. How Billy could just write song after song is a mystery to me, amazing pieces of music that would not even come out as a single and maybe only as a B-side. SP4EVER

That's awesome. You may like our stuff

Wow, starting off with Soma? Beautiful.
Between 48:10 and 48:20 Billy is noodling in-between songs it sounds like Robbie Kreiger's beginning of The End by The Doors
Saw them in 96 on the Melon Collie run.... Powerful live band,,, with this line up here!!! Hell,, THIS IS The Smashing Pumpkins right here!!!!!
Whoa, the sound quality on this is insane!
i wan't even born when these songs were made and I'm just now starting to listen to them.
I love Jane's Addiction and when I saw them on You Tube together I was extatic.
they are indeed playing together this fall . What snot to like about Perry Farrell , one of the best singers out there still alive .
Better late than never, same here 64.
Saw them summer of '94. Best concert I've ever been to. This video takes me back. Great quality too

That's awesome. You may like our stuff
OH my... this is a hidden Gem!!
hummer is awesome
the outro to 'Hummer' is something I could put on loop and mentally zonk out to every time
In their eyes I was alive..fools diguiseee
Good to know thatnks for tellimn me
57:30 - There's only one Jimmy Chamberlin. Ffffffffrghhhhhwwwhoa.
Drink!
Sounds awfully similar to what he does at ruclips.net/video/M3s02WuWMt0/видео.html
I just found my ticket stub from this show. I was a sophomore in college when I went to see the Pumpkins at the Fillmore reopening, after the big earthquake of '89. I recall tickets selling out in about two minutes to this show.
Cool story. But this show was in 1994, not 1989.
@@boofert.washington2499 that's correct. The Fillmore reopened in '94 after the big quake in '89. This was the reopening show IN 1994. I was at the show IN 1994. Sorry for confusing you.
@@edwardaguilar605 Question: it sounds like the crowd was just not into this show, was that the case? Seems crazy if it was, awesome set. Thanks.

I am not shivering at 4:18
I’m not
I'm not shivering, but there was a time I probably would've. I've heard their songs too many times lol
could I possibly love them more?!?
As I stand in the kitchen 45 years old stirring mac n cheese for my kids with my ear buds all the way up screaming these songs. My kids think I'm an alien. 😂. Forever a Fan ❤️🤘
I feel ya.
You rock man! Strangely I'm just getting into them! I was too cool back in the day for stuff like this. I was into metallica, pantera and such..I feel like I missed so much great music..having fun catching up though!
This. Becuase this recording is amazing!
Kymberli Shea should play it out loud, let them be cooler than all their friends 🤘
Awesome
Man I'm not a drummer and don't know much about it, but I swear I can hear some Jazz influence in dude's drumming.
+Moody Hyadd jimmy was formed as a jazz drummer :)
that's one of the goals of the smashing pumpkins, brings the feel and the vibe of jazz music to rock
+Moody Hyadd in fact i think he's now on a self-created jazz band.
+Alex Saiz Coello Yeah The Jimmy Chamberlin Complex
the vibe of jazz music to rock .... good one :-)
Jimmy was a jazz drummer early on in his career. I recall him being in a band called The Skittles.
The rendition of "Disarm", in this show, is absolutely stunning.
wish I was there
Roxy Burton I seen them in 96 cold chills the whole time it was one of the highlights of my life
Killer Show! But you had to be there to feel the power of those drums and duel guitars 🎸! It was amazing! They played at over 120 decibels! It was like a plane taking off!
I was stunned!
I could feel the drumbeats on my chest.
It was crazy!
I’m glad this was recorded for posterity so people can get a taste of SP live in their prime!
Thanks!
👏🏻🎸😎
saw them a few days later in Holland at the Pinkpop Festival where they eclipsed any other band of the day . Incredible show

Best era of pumpkins. JC is an absolute beast
Best live concert of all time.
If you love this, check out their Siamese Dream release party, at the metro 1993! Truly one of the best live shows every recorded. Definitely my fav
check the Pinkpop Festival footage with a cam set recording the concert behind Jimmy Chamberlain ( the only time he was filmed during his Master Drumming class )
Hard to disagree here
Next year, this footage'l be 30years old. Wow 🥰
2024
Kurt Cobain died a couple weeks earlier before this show. Such an exciting and sad time for grunge. I was born just five months later.. Wish I could've been there during those great years for music.
I used to follow them on tour from city to city with a group of buddies through the 90s. We were in our teens, and only now realize how good grunge/rock was back then
Glad you found the music even though it was a little before you arrived!
I was at this concert as a freshman in college with a few friends. Unforgettable night.
I was 13 and not old enough to physically be there but so obsessed with the music, it's so validating when the next generation vibes with it too 🙏♥️
4/25/94 I was 14, with my 14 year old friend being dropped off to a rock show in Dayton Ohio !! general admission = front row if you can run fast enough, which I did!!!
Incredible performance, brings me way back.
WHOA!!! This is amazing. Even though I can just click on this and watch it for free all I want if they put this out as a physical release I'd but it in an instant.
Jimmy is so effing clean ALL the time!!! So damn busy!!
Soma is my favorite song, what a mighty fine way to open this show.
Thank you for posting. Great show I wish I would have seen them during this era.
Nostalgia infinita!
Billy and Jimmy =rock and roll
jimmy i love you
A psychedelic rock show. SP weren’t a grunge band and yet they were as powerful as any Seattle band thanks to JCs incredible drumming.
Gorgeous version of Starla, might be the best I've heard.
I saw them on this tour, but they didn’t start with “Soma” at my show. My all-time favorite Pumpkins song. Incredible.
Yep, I saw them in Tampa in I think November '93 and they opened with Rocket.
love the sound on this specific show. amazing
I miss these days. Thank you for the upload.
Look at that set list.. WOW they don't make em like that any more.
Pumpkins were so amazing back then.
Grew up with this band. This show was fucking out of this world. Thanks for the upload 💕🎖⚡️
i was actually at this show...it was LOUD and beautiful
1:06:00 HOLY FUCK THIS SOLO
This concert is incredible! Starla solo seals the deal!!
Wow, great video.
Lately, whenever I get a little drunk I end up watching vintage Pumpkins concerts on RUclips. I always wanted to play the bass like D'arcy when I grew up and have been fairly uninterested in this band ever since she left.
lol ur kidding...
In terms of music, Oceania is frickin' amazing. The vocals seem very "Tired" on that one tho'. sadly.
The vocals put me off it
One of the best videos I have ever seen! Each member is perfect 👌🏼
I like how they keep singing without small talks between each song. Like they really immerse themselves into an constant emotion. "Hush now don't you speak to me."

Pumpkins and the Filmore
Amazing memories
Smashing pumpkins should have changed their name after 1995 - not in the same league as the original
Memories
Sa town checking in here too! Viva Fiesta!
sunken garden. great show.
Loving the unusually bass-driven version of Rocket.
SP4EVER
5:34 Perfect ❤
23:47 for some vocals!
A better drummer than my man Mr Chamberlain there is not. Sublime
This was the smashing pumpkins I knew. So awesome.
Amazing Show and performance!!! Thanks!
This is wonderful.
46:52 MAGIC
90 - 95 was an outstanding stretch for guitar-based music. Smashing Pumpkins was certainly top 10 of the era -- wildly creative.
That outstanding stretch was actually 1969 to 2010
who are you including?? melodies/which/stand/the test/of time wise..it's only Pumpkins and Nirvana..
Sound tech had those drums fucking dialed! Bravo!
Great performance. Jimmy is easily a top five rock drummer of all time.
Billy: LIAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR
2:57 5:08 5:41 etc I love the seamless Soma Solo handoffs from James to Billy and back to James again over and over.
probably the best sounding SP live concert from that era.
God I love Billy
