    I work with physically handicapped children and adults. Many of these kids are attached to tubes and cannot eat or use the restrooms without some form of help. Its a very sad life and many of these kids live short lives. At my job we have music Friday and play songs to them on guitar. This is when I see these kids smile and bop their heads along. Just being a big SP fan I fell upon this and seeing those disabled kids behind them shaking their feet to Tonight Tonight is what makes this band so beautiful. Music is the best medicine is the world and they understand that. This video is an example of that. A day they will never forget.

The Bridge School Benefits are the most incredible shows you will ever see in your life. I've been to 4 so far. Seen Metallica twice, Pearl Jam twice, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Tom Jones, David Bowie, so many people and bands I can't even begin to remember them all. • @doomrat
    @doomrat 4 года назад +95

    It's interesting to me that Corgan likes to remind people that he often had to play D'arcy and James' parts in the studio when recording albums. But the truth is that throughout their entire catalog, their live versions of songs (going back to Gish) are by far my favorite versions. For every song, there is a live counterpart from a session or concert that is better than the studio version. And as far as I can tell (during the era where they were still involved) they played their own instruments on stage.
    So I never really understood why Corgan would make such a point of suggesting that they couldn't play very well because clearly they always could...well enough to make some damn fine live music and well enough to far surpass the sound of the current lineup of SP.
    Music is about chemistry, not perfection. Whatever flaws they all had (even Corgan's inconsistent vocals) is what gave them their sound and it definitely wasn't perfect but it was pretty amazing when the chemistry was in full effect.

    • @dynjarren7523
      @dynjarren7523 4 года назад +4

      You pointed out a reality I noticed as well!
      I saw James Iha play live with SP.. His hands were flying super fast during the fast songs so all that nonsense that he or Darcy couldn’t play is exactly that! Nonsense!
      As far I I’ve read, Butch Vig said to Corgan that they’re playing wasn’t up to snuff, I guess. And that only he and Chamberlain could play well enough to record. Now I don’t want to blame Butch Vig for this fiasco completely. He’s a great producer. Corgan is a control freak apparently and took over everything except the drumming. Now I’m going to go back and see if James played on Gish at all or if the guitars 🎸 are all Corgan. I’ll find out soon enough. But knowing Corgan is a perfectionist, I’m not sure if James is on the record or not. Darcy sings on it but now I’m not certain about the bass playing on there either. It might be all Billy. I’m going to find out. 🔥🎸💥😎

    • @Portekberm
      @Portekberm 4 года назад +1

      They were good live, but i think its because they fell out over it before mcis, then the press made such a big deal out of it, pre pro tools days and all, bands were still pretty much expected to recorded live. You could aurgue albums like siamese dream and nevermind raised the bar for production generally.. then pro tools changed everything... mellon collie is mostly live though..

    • @whatdothlife4660
      @whatdothlife4660 3 года назад +3

      It was a mix of Billy's control, his desire to record and spend 18 hrs a day in the studio, and the big catalyst was their first two albums being prooduced by Butch Vig who shared his obsession and was relentless in the studio. Switching to Flood for Mellon Collie changed the vibe up quite a bit and had a lot more band input. Billy's deep-dine on Gish reveals a lot of the nuance: ruclips.net/video/E5gqY65DYts/видео.html

    You know one of my college buddies turned me on to Smashing Pumpkins and he said listen to that which was Gish and I was blown away because to me they didn’t sound like anyone else. Billy’s vocals were very unique, his and James guitar 🎸 playing very original and inspirational, Darcy with her own ice Queen vibe, and Jimmy’s very unique approach to playing aggressively and then quietly and then amazing dexterity with ghost notes on the snare and toms with jazz flavoring! So to sum up they didn’t sound like any group at their time not grunge, soft rock, not alternative, not Progressive rock just their own unique sound which was unheard before ala Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix where right of the Shute as a listener you were going what’s this? I don’t know but I like this! Saw the Gish tour and then Siamese Dream tour as part of LOLLAPOLOOZA! Love the guys! I do miss Darcy though! Just sayin 💔

    27:35 Oh you know, just MARILYN FREAKING MANSON casually coming on, no big deal. Btw I love how Manson planted a kiss on Billy's bald head and he did the rest of the show with a giant lipstick mark on his head XD

    Xyu, one of the best songs ever, seriously its done beautifully here, while the loud versions are face ripping, and given to much interpretation when played live

      And while i appreciate Billy's singing these days, i even find myself singing along to old songs like how he has sung the last 15 years, his singing from 1997 to 2000 was his best.

      Bless the time when bands did something different live than they have done in the recordings. Now every concert sounds the same.

    James Iha is one of my favorite guitarists of all time, I saw him with Perfect Circle in Sacramento, CA at an Aftershock music festival; I never had an opportunity to see The 1st Smashing Pumpkins in concert so seeing James Iha was fantastic . I’m a guitarist also & Im 66 😎
