God nothing says vintage smashing pumpkins like Billy smashing his guitar at the end of jackboot while James is wearing a fucking space helmet and shooting a toy gun through his pickups.
You're right - these guys kicked Nirvana's arse- remember Billy in a magazine whingeing about not getting the success nirvana did ha - actually no, wouldn't say they're BETTER than Nirvana- totally different band.
Nathan Anderson You can like both, but people usually eclipse The Pumpkins with Nirvana putting them in a pedestal saying they’re the best band of the 90s or to ever exist and putting The Smashing Pumpkins all the way to the bottom.
Jimmy Chamberlain is the best drummer I've ever heard. Like ever... Trumps Grohl, Chad Smith, every drummer of the 90's era. I'll even go so far to say that he even beats Keith Moon and John Bonham. Yep said it. Trumps Bonham. I rate Jimmy as the #1 most talented drummer in rock from the 60's - now. The band was just too underrated at the time to see him get that mainstream recognition. Those rolls, those offbeats. Damn he was amazing. He was a classically trained jazz drummer FFS. Prove me wrong.
There's favorites. There's no "best" drummer. It's a very ignorant thing to say. Not pointing my finger at you, though. Just hate when people say "who's better" "he's the best," etc. As far as my favorite, Danny Carey from Tool and Jimmy. Both heavily jazz influenced
I find it hard to disagree...all the hype was around Bonham, Moon, then Grohl I'd challenge Grohl to a drum battle if I was Jimmy. Millionaire sell-out Mr Grohl 'd be blown off stage!!
It would be hard to compare Jimmy, since Bonham is not from Jimmy's era. Different eras, different general knowledge of drumming. 99 Percent sure, Jimmy was inspired by Bonham himself. Speaking about 90's era drummers, I would mention Sean Reinert, he is the former jazz player as well, yet he kicks ass in metal, utilizing jazz/fusion skills. Check him out, what you think?
I was there in the front row maybe not the night of them filming but came out a changed person for sure. BC and JC were fucking gods that night and riding the tube home with all of us having been blessed of seeing the best band from our generation. Every tune was awesome, loud and fast!!
I recommend anybody that likes this song to listen to the Pistachio Melody that is on the box set, record Zero. It is a hodgepodge of various studio outtakes during the recording of Mellon Collie. There are some real gems on it. Some parts are a little too short but it is very rewarding to the die hard Pumpkins fan. Also, this version of Silverfuck never gets old. Billy is one of my top five favorite guitarists ever. This is one of the best anti-grunge, shoe gazing videos ever.
A friend of mine played a song by collective soul " the world i know" and told me the song was by the Smashing Pumpkins. I went to the record store and bought Siemese Twins and was hooked by one of the geatest musical minds of all time. Bang bang I was dead with a musical hole in my head!!!!
Even with a tune like this, James is one of the most tasteful and restrained guitar players I've heard. Even his noise sounds refined. Perfect contrast to Billy.
This is simply insane. Love the feedback/liar part. So well synchronized. If you’re missing it, put on some headphones and turn it up. Orchestrated chaos.
I never put BC in the league of top guitarists, like a Page, Beck, Hendrix, White, Young...but I've been watching vids from 94 and he was a powerhouse, with lots of great ideas and tones...Chamberlin was a monster in 94, pushing the whole band. Very tight too, a huge credit needed for Darcy and James.
@@AudietherealRECORDS yeah for sure. aleast for that 90's era. musicianship wise, he could wipe the floor with any of his contemporaries (nothing against Nirvana or Soundgarden. i love those bands)...but to this day, he still stands as an underrated genius musically. Billy has got the talent like no other of that era, and he's still going strong af.
I am usually an open minded person, but how the fuck can someone dislike almost 13 minutes of music that makes my arm hair stand up? I can understand that you dont like SP, but what that video showed was more emotion funneled through music than most bands could conjure up. Or maybe I am a sucker for a driving beat and some violence whipped cream on top.
VHS had about 240 horizontal lines, while DVD has about 400. Analog is frequencies, digital is numbers. Analog tape breaks down, while digital video does not. This tape is probably 20 years old, was probably recorded in the lowest quality mode with the highest noise (EP/SLP). No matter what "quality" you set it to, your results would be the same as you currently see. If you cannot enjoy it, and the nostalgia that it conveys....then please...move on to a new digital video of The Black Keys.
WarmothGuitarist ... Excellent comment! Totally true. I still have all of this stuff on VHS. I’d love to have the equipment/know how how to upload it onto another (DVD) quality! I was always sitting there ready to press RECORD when MTV was on back in the early- mid 90’s!!! lol 👍🏽
I wnt to their show in 1996 in Portugal & I do remember my feet not touching the ground for the most part of their 15' version of silverfuck. Probably the best gig I've ever been (believe me, I've been to A LOT of gigs of A LOT of bands)
me too.. even if not. .they are extremely close to ODing on pure Adrenaline alone I reckon. .there;s really nothing quite like old SP is there..especially from early to mid 90s. .
On the cd EARPHORIA after the final "hole in your head" line, billy sings a line from "somewhere over the rainbow", very cool. They should of kept it for the video.
So glad I got to see them in 1996 in Birmingham on the Mellon Collie tour, Jelly Belly was amazing live! Also, this made me feel turbo old. Shit. I'll just go and walk into the sea.
I remember renting this VHS tape from the library in 95'. As discombobulated as some of this sounds to the untrained ear it is vastly superior to any kind of music that has come out within the last decade.
I saw these guys at the Concert Hall in Toronto Pearl Jam opened for them and they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the very beginning of the Blood Sugar Sex Magic tour.Met Eddie Vedder before the show started as well.
I wrote this song for them in an hour and 15 minutes. 18 minutes after I handed it to him Billy said in here, and it was like everything else so long as it didn't have my name on the back tail end of it another masterpiece. Was I jealous that they made millions off of it was I jealous because nobody knew my name but literally hundreds of thousands of them were screaming for my art. It's not hard it's just life when I gave up what I love most and allowed the prince of entertainment to take control. She went from she was my angel and all I could recall of me only came to life when she put it in a box and put it underneath her bed because when you lie to yourself and you lie for yourself when you lie I feel no pain. Every time she says I love you to him every time she kisses him good night every time she has a tear of delight she lies to herself and I feel no pain. Just a twitching my right hand to hurry up and get the lyrics wrote down 🤣

Just wondering, has anyone ever found out who the guy at 6:25 is? Or has he ever made himself known on any forums etc.? For those of us that bought the Viewphoria VHS back in the day before the internet was a thing, he was kind of a pre internet meme ;) Would be really interesting to know if he even knows about it! He must be about 40+ years old by now :)
I've got it on VHS somewhere in my dads loft ;þ recorded it off MTV.... I think pretty much all of it is on youtube I think, if you search for smashing pumpkins london astoria the psychadelic neon colours give away which are this concert!
If you like The Smashing Pumpkins "Silverfuck" you should listen to The Smashing Pumpkins "Gossamer" is just as good as anything they made in the 1990s.
One more recommendation, buy or have a listen to an album called Axe Victim from Bebop Deluxe. The guitarist and singer Bill Nelson brings his own style and darkness to early progressive rock.
this is THE most rock n roll moment of the 90's.

G. Ryin Gaines only a true fan would know that part was called jackboot
Most people blow Cobain when reminiscing bout 90's rock. No; this is where it's at, sorry. This is top.
Smashing Pumpkins was *the band* of the 90s.
+macabregemini Agreed. This was the pinnacle of 90's rock. We've never seen such majesty again.
You're right - these guys kicked Nirvana's arse- remember Billy in a magazine whingeing about not getting the success nirvana did ha - actually no, wouldn't say they're BETTER than Nirvana- totally different band.

@@matthew4803 I agree
literally feels like a mountain falling on your head LOL
As I longtime fan I love you for saying that.
if you look at 12:29 you can see an energized billy corgan fresh off a show get clocked in the face by a drum pedal
I would give almost anything to go back in time and attend that concert right there.

Jackboot !!! Oh,oh yes! Billy you beautiful man.
words can't even describe how amazing this is.

They were fkn killers this tour and Mcis! Dare i say very very hard to beat by any anyone during that time
I’m old enough to have been there man. So envious of you. Just incredible. I bet this was all you were talking about on your journey home?! 😉
This show literally changed my life, and the way i listened to music. Epic!
You were there?? If so that is metal as a mofo
ROCK!!!!! The heavy groove at the end is everything. Plus, Jimmy Chamberlain's tempo is light-speed. Kudos to the band for keeping up!
One of my favorite drummers of all time
I remember having the tour tape. Got it as a Christmas gift one year. Memories
christina c first time I watched was new years eve high on acid.....ahhh the good Ole days
RIP Jimmy's drums and Billy's face
ladies and gentlemen...Smashing Pumpkins.
best version of Silverfuck!!!
Agreed
Fucking crazy... Peak Pumpkins right here... Nothing beats Siamese Dream era!
Album wise im with you live MCIS was even better jmo
one of billy's strings broke look 9:46 awesome version!
Things were just better in the 90's.
i'm from São paulo brazil and i saw them in 1996 on the same high level!!
jimmy is the best drummer of 90's

Billy Corgan makes me happy, he really makes my ears happy
This was the first Pumpkins song I ever heard,(1993, KVSC, St Cloud State radio station) Immediately hooked! Forever a fan.
Leeds Town and Country 1994, still the best gig I've attended, period!
A friend of mine played a song by collective soul " the world i know" and told me the song was by the Smashing Pumpkins. I went to the record store and bought Siemese Twins and was hooked by one of the geatest musical minds of all time. Bang bang I was dead with a musical hole in my head!!!!

Eat your heart out Clapton, sorry bro but you can't hold a candle to this guy. Different time here. Outstanding.
Holy shit. Fucking. Kick. Ass.
Hang on I had this on VHS lol. After the bang bang you're dead bit, he sings 'Somewhere over the Rainbow'. Evidently not here.
What a drum-kit! n soundboard......
I miss the days when they'd do a month's worth of acid before a show.
This whole concert fn rocks. Back when they were raw. I love it raw and live
Jimmy is insane in this DAMN
Wow, I love the Smashing Pumpkins. Look how the audience totally loses it at the encore.
the drumming on this track is fucking heroic!!
this is it, thx geri

It has certainly made fun, the guitar to smash. an amazing performance! and James with his laser gun! divine! we miss you James! :(
The most beautiful ending to a song
Some of the best live performances that I saw.
Gosh this is primal and good. Billy just.. goes nuts.

Still sounds powerful to these jaded ears: even after all these years. Thanks BC et al
