@@robovac3557thanks for the input 🤡
I miss D'arcy. We all know Corgan is the true genius behind SP, but the original lineup was just so damn cool. D'arcy, she IS the nineties to me. The original four really need to reunite. That would be once concert I'd sleep out for tickets.
my thoughts exactly. d'arcy embodies 90's alternative culture. but all eras aside (as to not pigeonhole the band as a nostalgia group), the original lineup had the vibe of an actual band, each member adding their own character into the mix.
I just hope she's ok, the last thing I heard about her was that weird call she made to a radio back in 09. You could tell drugs affected her deeply... If, I mean when the Pumpkins get in the Hall of Fame, I hope she'll be there :)
Seba Cabré
do u know if there is some recording of that? because i don't know sh*t about what happened apart from some drug problems in general
WatjeBent i know it wasn't directed to me, but it's on youtube. search "d'arcy wretzky interview 2009" and it's up there. quite sad, really. but now d'arcy's fine, i think. i mean, she has her own facebook page, which suggests that she's now retired, working on her farm with her horses, and talking to some fans.
Not so much of an interview, she just calls the radio station, and starts talking about where's she living, her boyfriend that had died not long ago... It's actually a bit sad, at least for me, to hear her like that. I reaaaaaally hope she's living her life happy right now, she deserves it.
what a genuine band man, their sound was definitely unique.
+Kevin Rachman grungegaze
I initially read, "what a genuine bald man"
actually just a few "big" bands fitted in the label "grunge". most of them just share seattle as hometown and the fact that their music was guitar based and full of energy.
the ones that fitted the label were the ones that were created to sell a product
That works as well
@@burton12E4 youre not wrong
This tour was unreal. Live Pumpkins at their prime. This was an unstoppable band. Even with everything that happened, they picked up and kept killing their live show. I'm so lucky I got to see this band as many times as I did.
It's crazy cuz obviously they're a band but back in the 90's it felt like so much more than just a concert. I can't really explain it. There's a certain theatricality to what they were doing without going over the top. This tour was my first concert. I was 12. What a great first show haha.
You say," with everything that happened.." what do you mean? D'arcy and James break up? Or something else?
@@TheSInSurfer When Jimmy was kicked out of the band. They picked up with Matt and were still at the top of their game.
@@pgriffinbaron Ah, Thank you. Now I understand. I appreciate the answer.
@Griffin Baron Plus their keyboardist died from a heroin od after this tour, I was friends with his sister who wrote coffee and starfish for prince and their sister was prince's original guitarist featured in Purple rain.
Billy sounds really good here, man. Like probably his best. Zero sounds amazing, holy hell.
This is how I remember the Mellon Collie show in my little town in 96. One of the greatest nights of my life. All on my own in a seat in the middle, having my life changed forever.
The "naked man" is Dan from the band Chumbawamba. Both bands were playing the festival, and apparently Billy was a jerk to their band. They thought it would be funny to prank them during their performance.
@@dietpepsi9140I heard Billy was a jersey to alot of people. I don't know what pressures he had and some people just react to it
I appreciate how James just seems incredibly amused when he sees "the naked man." Not scared, not pissed off, not confused, just amused.
He was so nonchalant about it lmao!!!
When?
Hahaha😂 oh yes I remember that now oh Angel's in disguise;)
12:11 in case you missed it. I thought it was part of the show. I thought it was bad to the bone!
I LOVE how no one is holding a phone and everyone is enjoying the show!
That's right haha
+Monica Corgan the good old time
are you crazy or moral? don't understand your reponse.........
+Jorge Nuñez lol I disagree. There would be less recording because some bands have more obnoxious fans than others but there would still be a lot of twats recording it.
That's right. But blame on the telephone companies and the technology. :-(
How great is James's reaction to the naked guy!
Yeah I thought it was priceless. 😆
Born in 84, been my favourite band since 2001, and finally getting to see them in Dublin in 2024😊 the mix of grunge, metal and real chilled music and the escapism their lyrics, sounds and music in general hit me right in the sweet spot!
That performance of Cherub Rock is the best I've ever seen!
I'm so very annoyed that I was born in '92. I'd give anything to see the four of them perform together live. WHAT A BAND!!
I'm 37 and I saw them in 94 or 95 lol I was in lole 4th or 5th grade
@JDawg8733 Lol I remember hearing some of these songs in 1st grade on the radio (6/7 in '96, 34 now). I didn't get the album until I was 15 though but I remember it was the first thing I ever downloaded off of ITunes.
@@twiff3rino28 I guess it's safe to say, I didn't realize and appreciate what I got see at a live concert here in Chicago when I was in like 4th or 5th grade lol it was the Mellon collie album. Came out the next day, mom got it at best buy lol I got a shirt from the concert. Me my brother and my mom. I got bored during the concert. Everyone was standing and I was sitting. Lmfao
@JDawg8733 Dang, that sucks. For me my biggest regret wasn't understanding the meaning of the video for "1979" until I was almost 30. I distinctly remember watching it as the depressed 15 year old I was and thinking, "Those kids are having too much fun, that's not me. WTF Billy... this isn't realistic." It probably struck me more at the time since the kids in the car were actually 15 and 16 when they filmed it, and I was learning to drive. Now, it makes me wish I was friendlier to the (then) kids who went out of their way to be nice to me, instead of being flaky over my own insecurities.
@@twiff3rino28 I hear you on that bro..I can realte In a way. And I'm not saying the concert wasn't good. Just saying at the time I was real young seeing them and I wasn't able to really appreciate what I actually seeing until now. I'm still into the 90s music these days.
11:48 I've noticed that Chamberlin often looks away from his kit while performing. Probably just a concentration face, but it makes him even cooler. As if that was possible. Such a talented drummer...!
13:49 best jumping from the crowd I've ever seen!
You gotta see some shows in South America. I saw a Pantera and the crowd was probably the best I've ever seen for energy
Thru the Eyes of Ruby and Porcelina back to back... the essence of the Pumpkins greatness.
So hard to watch this. The pumpkins was how I met my future husband. The pumpkins were also my first rock concert ever! Now, I'm divorced and buried by memories. This is what I call-beautiful sadness. 😰
How are you a year later?
Infinate.
bellissimo commento.
What a great piece of history. I always love how they weave those guitars. So much has changed they dont even make rock bands anymore.
I'm from Germany and I'm kinda sad that these times are over :') Feel like these kinds of concerts are super rare
I'm from Texas and 100% agree. The 90's which belongs over into the 2000's was the last screaming death of rock music
12:10 props to billy for killing the solo without distraction
Bro I don't think he knew. Billy was to focused.
Though Billy's voice is obviously shot in his performance, this is one of the most darkly beautiful, transferential onstage performances I've heard in a while. Would recommend! J in TX
The person posting the song titles is fired!
"Ruby". I cried.
you suck
Why?
Because they are posting the wrong song titles...
Thank you for posting this! i remember spending 90 dollars for this on a vhs tape for my xmas present one year. Oh the days of tape traders and no youtube
I saw them at the Forum in LA in ‘96 during the Mellon Collie tour back in college. Then I saw them again at the forum in 2018. Made me feel old since I needed ear plugs and I was watching the clock the whole time because I had work the next day😢

The guitar work here is fantastic. So much more enjoyable than crazy metal shredding, but just as heavy. Thru the Eyes of Ruby in particular. Iha is great here.
grew up on this band… 90s kid… and no one sounds like them
still one of my fav bands
Porcelina of the Vast Oceans is friggin' otherworldly. I think God threw Billy a bone...
I love how everyone started jumping when Today started!!
The Spirit of music was in them all!!
Muzzle. Perfection ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Despite being a fan for years I had completely overlooked that song. It is so good.
such an amazing band
one of the best of all time
Watching this was the very first time I was exposed to the Smashing Pumpkins. Good old German public television...
Best performance of Porcelaina ever!
Andrew Mello I heard a ton of live stuff, and I agree with you!
+Andrew Mello I prefer the Brixton Academy one, cos Billys guitar is louder in the mix, but this one here is f-in epic though!
+Andrew Mello I would also say that for To Forgive and maybe even Thru the Eyes of Ruby
When I started watching this video, I didn't guess for a minute that the most kickass jam would be during Thru the Eyes of Ruby
They always played that jam during Ruby on that tour. This particular one isn't actually a good example of it, there are much better versions that they played later in the tour where it was almost like they were dueling guitars. Try ruclips.net/video/18x6aOU_fZg/видео.html or ruclips.net/video/hBBKxOIlUjw/видео.html
This is one lucky ass crowd!!! What a beautiful moment captured in time :)
never getting old, so great.
Best show of band.
This is totally vintage classic stuff 👏
Have always lived and breathed this art like the blood in my veins, have learned there songs the wrong way on instruments that I didn't even know how to play but still sounded true
when the pumpkins ruled the world..for a minute they were the greatest rock band in the world..for a minute
The pumpkins in their finest era.
Behold, The best Smashing Pumpkins live performance
You know one of my college buddies turned me on to Smashing Pumpkins and he said listen to that which was Gish and I was blown away because to me they didn’t sound like anyone else. Billy’s vocals were very unique, his and James guitar 🎸 playing very original and inspirational, Darcy with her own ice Queen vibe, and Jimmy’s very unique approach to playing aggressively and then quietly and then amazing dexterity with ghost notes on the snare and toms with jazz flavoring! So to sum up they didn’t sound like any group at their time not grunge, soft rock, not alternative, not Progressive rock just their own unique sound which was unheard before ala Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix where right of the Shute as a listener you were going what’s this? I don’t know but I like this! Saw the Gish tour and then Siamese Dream tour as part of LOLLAPOLOOZA! Love the guys! I do miss Darcy though! Just sayin 💔
one of the best Mellon lives. God, I can't tell what's more pure bliss...Zero or Ode. The way Billy rips on the guitar during Ode...and Chamberlin is a fucking beast
Thru the eyes of Ruby! EPIC!
I love that little dance they do. You know, where they jerk back from the microphone and thrust their guitars at you with their pelvis. Genius!
Who's seeing Pumpkins on their reunion tour this year? I'M GOING betches! 😁🤗 But I'll really miss D'arcy. Her and Billy's little sissy feud on the internet is like a dagger through my fucking heart 😦
Ya, it's not a reunion w/o D'Arcy
@@stuartewoldt1513 It was though! James Iha was there! And there was a girl that looked just like D'Arcy. Sure it would've been better with the real D'Arcy but that's still one of the best shows I've ever been to! I still remember it like it was yesterday. It was awesome!
I saw this tour in San Diego, and it completely blew my mind, and eardrums. The loudest show I've ever heard and best, by far. I feel it's maybe best live performance in the history of rock. Billy's voice was a lot better in that show compared to this recording. And in person the sound was just so much cleaner than this recording. I can't really describe it in words.
13:36 high!!! Pink ribbon scars That never forget Ive tried so hard To cleanse these regrets My angel wings Were bruised and restrained My belly stings
That version of "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" is awe-inspiring.
Seen the Pumpkins a month ago in Australia at the Horden Pavilion, they blew it away , this set has to be one off my all time favourites, Love SP for life
Best Alternative Rock Band of ALL TIME!!!
They are one of my favs! But Rhcp has them beat!
RHCP isn't alternative rock, they are (were) a funk band.
NefariousPorpoise Rhcp is both. They have the most number one hits on the alternative charts
Paul Stich what would be their most alt-rock song? like the pumpkins
Parallel universe could be considered pumpkins esque, still quite different though
"The naked man is a genius"
It's great that they used drum machine along with live drummer during 1979 performance. 1979 only works because of this sampled or programmed breakbeat drums that are basis for this track. I hate all the later live performances of 1979 where they use live drumming only and different tempo. 1979 supposed to have this electronic breakbeat. Without it it's not the same. Whole point of 1979 is this addition of electronic beats and sampled "aah" vocals. It gives track its futuristic and progressive sound that marked mid to late 1990s.
2019....this sure brings a lot of memories

I had this as a bootleg vhs in the late 90’s and used to watch it constantly!
You can tell his voice is totally thrashed here, but the performance is still amazing.
The greatest live show by any band EVER! Watch and listen and enjoy. This is hopefully what heaven will be like, listening to great bands, eating delicious food and rocking! Ha ha!
When you feel it. It's hard to deny it
brilliant timeless awe-inspiring
amazing show
The Pumpkins are real, always jamming in little auditoriums n taverns
where their audience can feel relevant. Not @ mega sized stadiums
where most people can't even see the stage, concert promos making
eye popping amounts of $$$, the stuff most songs oppose.
have you seen the more recent performances? with the new pumpkins band...
just awful
Go to 2:55 into the video... looks pretty fucking intimate, doesn't it? I remember when I saw them in 1997, it an obscure little tavern in the UK that held several thousand people.
The Smashing Pumpkins at their greatest...
I saw them on this tour in my hometown. Damn it was good. In my top five easy
This concert was broadcasted on my local radio station when melon collie came out I played it back for months on my portable tape deck. Senior year of high school best times.
to forgive, is the greatest song ive ever heard
The balance of the band members is astonishing. They are psychically linked, and completely saturate and cut through each others sound without violating one another. It’s pure fucking gold. I am always in love. Listen to how they sound - it’s almost like listening to the album itself. The precision is fine and fucking fantastic. For me, Billy and Jimmy are the band. So much connection there. What a great finish to the show. I could die to this and be okay.
Jimmy gives no fucks about the space pants. Rocking some shorts and probably flip flops. He’s such a pro, you absolutely cannot notice that he is deep in that dirt. I must applaud his talent.
I don’t know why I always forget about Darcy. She just sort of doesn’t exist for me. I can’t figure it out.
Look at the details. Look at how clean the stage is. Not a single piece of tape. That’s a beautiful sight for a keen eye. Everything is so methodical.
Going to be in the presence of James Iha on my bday this week, with Perfect Circle and I’m just fan girling like a proper hoe.
Just thank you for posting this. Best version of thru the eyes of the ruby... 👍👍👍👾
So eine schöne Erinnerung. Das Konzert in Hamburg damals war mein erstes Konzert 😀 und das an meinem 15. Geburtstag 🎂

Been to a few pumpkin shows and seen my share of live performances on RUclips..one thing is for sure the folks in Dusseldorf 1996 got a fucking treat....The pumpkins in their prime.
NEVER quite realized how 8:22 - An Ode to No One is so amazing, on par with X.Y.U.
I saw them in Hampton va during this tour they played 3 encores and billy played Guitar on stilts on the 3rd encore. Incredible performance thanks for posting this
It dont matter who plays bass and drums. Billy is the only one that cant be replaced
D'arcy... may you be happy and at peace with life wherever you may be.💖💖

Why does everyone have to share their fucking opinion? You would think half these people who comment were in the band the way they criticize the Pumpkins.
***** To much screaming.
I agree.
+Harry Metzler The reason most people share their idiotic opinions on RUclips is because no-one listens to what comes out of their pieholes in real-life....With good reason!
He's got technically more polished over the years but I wouldn't say better as he leaves all the shredding and solos to Jeff now rather than using his own considerable skills. And his voice has become more... conventional I suppose is the word but by no means is he better now than he was in his prime. In his prime he looked like he was having fun rather than going though the motions as he does now. Last time he looked happy was doing the acoustic Djali Zwan and Chicago Songs stuff.
Thanks for the upload. Love what Billy does with his guitar at the end of Porcelina of the Vast Oceans(42:19- 43:52).This is one of my favorite live Smashing Pumpkins videos. 😀
