    Suggestion: If your replacement gear is too tight, sand material off the metal base of the new gear until it runs smoothly.
    Details: I got the cheap Chinese replacement gear (white plastic with a hex set screw). It was extremely tight and very notchy feeling when turning the hand wheel. It was binding so hard that the motor could not overcome the resistance. I compared the overall height of the new gear with the original gear. The new gear was too tall. I resolved the problem by sanding off the base of the metal gear housing until the old and new gears were the same overall height. (Thus adjusting the bevel gear engagement). I had to sand off quite a bit of material. I’m sure I didn’t get it exactly flat but I think the longitudinal loads are not significant.

      Thank you, Paul. Somewhere in these 600+ comments is one similar to yours, but without the detail. I appreciate you sharing your experience on my video. I've pinned your comment to the top so other viewers will see it first, hopefully before they buy a gear, and know to watch out for that tall metal base. Thanks for saving your machine and take care.

      I am having this exact same problem with the new gear that I bought. It is very tight and feels notchy when you turn the hand wheel, just like you said. The motor can't turn hard enough to actual get the gears to move. I appreciate you pinning this comment to the top and also thank you for telling us about your experience.

      @@stealthyninja11 Welcome, and thanks again to Paul for sharing his experience. Apparently, another batch of "too tall" gears is being sold. I believe they are actually a different part number than 155819 and are made for a different model/models. The teeth and the base are separate part numbers and I think a factory is going by the teeth part number when selling to vendors on eBay and Amazon, etc. I've had another viewer email me that he had to use a grinder to lower the height of the metal base to match the original height of the old gear. The fix works b/c the teeth are the same as the old gear.

      I had the same problem with the same cheap gear. I'm sending it back to get a better brand. Also, the cheap gear hex screw is much smaller than the original and I don't feel like it will tighten down as it should. I would prefer the flat screwdriver head. My advice, don't buy the cheap china gear.

If you want a paying hobby, just advertise that you will replace those gears and you could be a busy guy, based on the dozens of emails and comment I get each week about them. I see the number of views on the video is appoaching 30K now. I never imagined that many but knew many people would be interested that have the dozen or so models with that weak gear. The machines themselves are good, strong, and versatile. With the new gear they can go a few more decades I think. Thanks again and be safe.

    Andy - Great video! Really helpful tips, and great explanations. IMPORTANT NOTE: When setting the timing, it is critical that the needle is on the UPSTROKE when you are stopping at the timing mark. If you the needle is on the downstroke, and you go through the timing process, the needle will not raise in time and will hit the rotating bobbin mechanism --this will snap off the needle. Fortunately, I rotated the hand wheel while watching the mechanism - and was able to catch this before any damage was done. NOTE 2: Singer has a PDF of the 457 machine on its website - you can use this to find all the oiling locations underneath, at the end, and on top of the machine. Finally, great advice about not putting gear grease or oil on the vertical/horizontal shaft gear teeth. I cleaned off all the grease/goop from prior users. NOTE 3: I ordered Singer Machine Oil to lubricate the machine, but it doesn't have a long thin tube to get to all the key locations. I used a bendable straw, cut one end to a point and poured a little oil down the straw. The pointed end allowed me to direct where the oil went. NOTE 4: I also ordered Singer "lubricant" in a 0.5 oz. tube which I thought was for the horizontal/vertical gears - BUT you specifically said those gears are not to be lubricated and that the gear lube was only for the worm gear. I used my straw to lubricate the base of the vertical shaft gear base where it meets the bushing. - Thank you Andy!!!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  4 года назад

      Thank you, Bill, and thanks for sharing all the good tips for working on and lubricating this model 457. Important Note: Yes, it is very critical that the needle bar is on the upstroke when setting the lower timing mark for the needlepoint to hook point timing. I covered this @ 1:46:30 in the video, as well as showing it in the close-up slide @ 1:47:39. It's good you bring attention to it like this and I'll pin your comment to the top in the hopes others will see your notes. Note 2: here is the link Bill mentions for downloading the free copy of the Instruction Manual from Singer; www.singer.com/search/support?title=457 The lubrication Instructions start on page 53 of the manual. Note 3: now that is a creative solution for pin-point accuracy when oiling. It's frustrating without some way to get the oil into the little ports b/c it seems more oil gets on the outside than on the inside parts. Nicely done. Note 4: Yes, yes, yes, greasing the worm gear is the way to go, that and oiling the base of the gear hub on the upright. Many other Singer Models have an exterior oil port for oiling the bushing under that gear, but on a dozen models similar to this 457 they did not provide a port. It's no surprise to me that those same models are notorious for top gear failure. Thanks for watching my channel, Bill, and sharing such a thoughtful and thorough comment. Take care. ✨

    Andy, I was astonished that I watched your entire 2hr video. But the detail, asides and diversions gave me confidence to tackle the job. Got the part from Singer UK, fitted it but could not set the timing because none of my keys would fit the hex screws. Then I had a thought, I bought the machine as a birthday present for my then fiance in 1973 and at that time we measured in inches. So I got a 3/32 hex key for about 20cents + postage and hey presto. Got the machine working in time for my wife to make face masks for the family and neighbours. Thanks a lot.

    Thanks so much for this video! I was emptying out my storage, and found this model 457 in what I thought was an empty sewing machine table. I plugged it in, and the motor turns, but nothing else. The top gear was in pieces, so I started with that. It took everything I had to get it out, and I finally had to use a punch (with a rag) to tap it free.
    I just ordered Krud Kutter, and I guess I'll have to take the rest of the machine apart to figure out why nothing moves, but I think that it's frozen because it must have been sitting for 40 years or so. (Someone gave it to me about 7 years ago).

      It is very common for an old machine to be frozen. It is usually because of dried oil in the parts. Before I dismantle it I will oil it properly according to the manual (you can read and/or download it here: www.scribd.com/document/720859001/Singer-457-Sewing-Machine-Instruction-Manual) Often that is all it needs, a good oiling and some time to let it seep into the parts. If more is needed I will heat all those metal parts with a hairdryer. That can soften the dried oil and let fresh oil into the spaces. Thanks for helping a young mom. That machine is very nice for making clothing, strong & versatile. Good luck.

      When you came to that place in the road where it diverged into two, you chose the road less taken; the road to salvation for the machine. I'm very grateful you took the machine from salvage to salvation and gave it a new life. It's a beautiful thing you've done there and I wish you decades more of happy sewing.

    Andy, thank you so much! I inherited a Singer Stylist 418 in non-working condition and it sat in my closet for a few years. I recently decided to troubleshoot it and found the problem...but had no idea how to get to the gear, let alone set the timing. I watched your video, then ordered the part for 6 bucks plus shipping, and with an hour's work I have a functioning machine! Feels great to bring some life back into this old machine.

    Hubby found this same machine in the TRASH a week ago, looks brand new~ I'm going through everything and the feed dogs move, but the bobbin thread wont catch; Looked inside and find in the corner, a crusty/cracked gear split into three parts.

      Fantastic, and thanks for saving the machine. 🙏It's such a nice model and based on the 347 which does have a steel gear. The 457 is an "updated" version but they went with a plastic gear. To be fair, the plastic gear lasted about 30 years in some cases. Poor model 457 machines have been tossed for years now after the gear started failing. Such a shame. When you see those nice steel pulleys and cogged timing belt it screams smooth power, but it comes down that vertical shaft from the dumb plastic gear. It is typical to find a 457K in good condition but it sounds like you found an extra clean one. No problem to sew quilts with it. If it fits under the presser foot it will probably sew it. A very nice metal machine that can be portable or mounted in a SInger Cabinet which many quilters prefer. I know you can replace that gear. Best of luck and happy quilting.

      @@andytubesewing1953 3 years back I was gifted a Singer Stylist 7258. I've been teaching myself quilting and have made 7 quilts various sizes. The issue (although I love this Singer) is that it's has very little room to sew longer fabrics straight, esp. if you try a higher speed on it. The higher speed sends the fabric off course and misses nice/neat seams. As many of us know, it takes 2-3+ times longer to undo a bad seam. 2 weeks back, I'd mentioned for my birthday how much I'd LOVE to have a machine that could sew a tad faster and with less mistakes.... The Universe listened, and sitting on top of the trash where hubby works was this 457. She looks like she's been used maybe 1 month!? I said, "Are you serious!?" Then plugged her in; motor, light bulb, foot press all appear brand new! With the exception of the busted plastic gear and the 4 foot-pads about to crumble due to age, I think it's exactly what I'm looking for. SO, I did get the Vertical top gear, 1 motor belt, 1 Timing Belt, some Tri-flo oil & 4 new foot cushions.... I'll be up and running soon ~ SO EXCITED! Again, thanks much!

    What are the "symptoms" of a broken top gear? What does the sewing machine do? or not do? I guess it took many years for Singer to figure out these top gears were "bad news"...they used them in so many models.
    I sure do appreciate having such a variety of videos to view. You have been a tremendous help to many people. Thanks!!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  4 года назад +1

      When the gear starts to break apart, often the teeth will chip off and the machine runs "rough" as the gear starts slipping. The hook to needle timing can get off and start having skipped stitches. The needle can strike the hook. The hook can stop turning all together. On some machines the feed dog will stop moving. During all this the needle bar will still go up and down and the take-up lever still functions. You don't see it, but the timing belt starts turning erratically or stops altogether. If you remove the bed plate (think oil pan) you often find pieces of the broken gear on the bottom of the machine. If the gear goes out slowly the symptoms seem intermittent. If the gear fails quickly (often the case) the hook just stops turning right in the middle of a seam. Most of the machnes this happens to are in the 40 to 50 YO range and kept sewing long after the company was sold. Thanks for watching my channel. Take care.

      I'm glad the video was helpful to you, and thanks for saving your 247. That model we call a "flat-top" and Singers' solution to the broken gear involved almost a total disassembly of the parts; about a 13 step process each way. I have about a dozen pictures of the flattop models, and others, that viewers made holes or cut the metal frames for access to the gear. It's a clever solution. You are the first one to explain to me about using a cap for your access hole. Now that is a great idea and good for preventing dust, etc. from entering into the machine. A salute to you for that idea. Until now, no one has posted a video of what/how they solved their problem, so I encourage you to do that. A short video explaining how you went about it could help others with the same problem. You can post videos to your own RUclips channel. Here is Google's help page explaining how to do that if you've never tried: support.google.com/youtube/answer/57407?co=GENIE.Platform=Desktop&hl=en Here is a nice 4-minute video with 1.5 million views showing the step-by-step process: ruclips.net/video/VtF2AgFSLAw/видео.html Thanks for sharing your idea on my channel and take care.

    Repaired a Singer L47 and 457 thanks to this video. For the UK people here, you'll need an IMPERIAL sized allan key set to loosen the timing bolt on the 457 (£4 from Halfords). For the L47 or 247, use a screwdriver bit held at 90 degrees with plyrs to get the old gear screw loose without complicated disassembly. As I had no luck finding 247 gears in the UK (457 are easy to find) I can also confirm the chinese seller on ebay with 247 gears are selling the correct size part, you just have to wait 2 weeks

I have heard from people here in the US that a maker of that gear sells them with the metal base a little tall and others have had to grind them down a little. I would replace it when you can. Picked-up a 477 today at Salvation Army. It has the exact problem but working to get it corrected. Nice to have the reference of your video to help along with the repair - thanks for taking the time to post the information. I'm going to look around to see if these gears are available in metal ... maybe I can get my husband to machine them for me. :) Even with this repair I'd much prefer an older machine than the junk they sell now. These seemingly insignificant 2 plastic gears could be the smoking gun that took Singer down from their hay-day. How unfortunate.

      Welcome. IMO, it was not plastic gears that caused the downfall of Singer, but the much cheaper machines from Japan and then Taiwan. As costs went up after WWll the price of an all-metal Singer was more than most people wanted to spend. My understanding is that Singer was sold to a Japanese investor around 1984. The plastic gears should last 25 years or more if not exposed to oil. You can download a 75-page pdf copy of the Original Singer Instruction Manual for Model 477 for free here:
      www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/01c62c901c15f3202fc3263cd76cd27c3bc2f688_0.pdf
      Since you will be working on your machine you may find a copy of the 5-page parts diagram with numbers to be helpful. It is free also at this link:

    I took your advice and did the video on the Singer. I didn’t know whether you wanted me to put your link in there or not but, I referred to your video as being much more detailed. Check it out if you want. The software I used was new and easy to use but, not happy with voiceovers. I too ran into lighting issues and some sound issues and did this on my front porch. I still like your video more than mine. That timing is very tricky as lining everything up because I was still not sure how close the needle was to be near the hook point I believe you call it. I never worked on a sewing machine before and this was a nice challenge.

Yes, lighting is always a hassle isn't it? The clear close-up pictures you added did the trick so we can pause on them and see what we need. I added a CARD to this video ( circled i in the top right corner of the video) that has a link to your video, added the video link in the description below the video, and I pinned your comment to the top here so others can see it. I can't hit the LIKE button often enough for this very excellent educational video!!!! As Chickanic says in her videos, you have saved me time, money and frustration. Just this last week the timing went out on our machine, needle hitting metal. Found the top gear fine on one side and the teeth kind of mushy like old rubber on the other. No way for the gear on the horizontal shaft to engage it. No need for me to speed up the video, I paused it several times to look at our machine. I find it odd that the screw on the left goes into a speed nut rather than have the body of the machine tapped like it is for all the others. Our machine is in a cabinet, seems I might need my wife to hold the vertical shaft pulley while I put on the top gear, it is her machine so she can help ;). Our 457 doesn't have the top oil hole and has a plastic pulley on the bottom of the shaft. Part on order from Amazon. Amazing that these 45+ year old machines are still repairable. Back when I did this job on the 413 I set the machine on it's back, it was in the cabinet, and grabbed the gear with an extendable magnet, and then pulled the shaft down with one hand while removing the gear/magnet with the other.
    Worked out very well.
    The gear removal is different on the 413, that hole you used does not exist and you have to go through where the thread length lever is.
    Went back in with the magnet holding the gear the same way, really slick.
    Biggest problem I had was the screw was so tight I destroyed two Craftsman screwdrivers trying to get it to snap loose, finally had to go buy a German Wiha screw driver that was tough enough to get it out.
    I put it back in with the allen set screw after the screw driver dilemma.
    Picked up a beautiful 404 today for peanuts, looks and runs great.
    Only thing I could find wrong with it was they had the stop nut washer in upside down, so when you ran it, it backed off and went into bobbin winding mode.
    Another great video Andy, thank you.

    Andy, your videos are the very best, I was sewing last night with my 457 and it was running great but then no stitches, they I noticed that the bobbin wasn't turning any more, got up this morning and I've been following you video for the gear issue and yes, the gear is missing so many teeth (machine would sew for a bit and hit a place with missing teeth), I having trouble getting the little set screw to loosen. Thank you so much for all you do for all of us!!!!

      A classic experience when the gear fails. I'm glad you found the video, Susan. Set screws can be difficult. Penetrating oil, heat from a hairdryer, tapping on the screwdriver while turning can help sometimes. I've been using a new (to me) tool called an IMPACT DRIVER that accepts screwdriver bits, 1/4" like I use, and you hold the driver into the screw and hit the other end. This causes a quick, hard, short twist and breaks free the set screw, or other screw. SOmething like this: www.amazon.com/Performance-Tool-W2503-Impact-Extractor/dp/B00MXFFPVY

    Thank you for this video; it was greatly appreciated! My Mother-in-Law just gave us her old, in-cabinet model (just like yours depicted) that was purchased back in the late 60s and after dusting, oiling, and inspecting, I found the horizontal tower shaft gear missing 180 degrees of teeth and the needle that was installed was bent. I assume the timing of the hook and needle shaft went out sometime before we had acquired it. Your video helped me understand a machine I've never worked on since I'm a visual and hands-on learner. Andy, thank you so very much for your unending generosity. I need some help. I have two problems both on a Singer 2112. There is very little information on this machine. I am cleaning/lubricating a Singer Merritt 2112 to give to a minister’s wife at one of our Spanish speaking ministries. . At any rate in an attempt to access and clean the plastic cam stack and unstick and clean the metal gears on the horizontal shaft on the top of the machine, I unscrewed two screws and removed 2 flat metal bars If you’re looking at the top from the front of the machine, these bars are located Just to the left of the horizontal, flat, plastic “pattern selection” wheel. A fairly large flat circular spring/wire (7/8 “) seemed to come out from the screw that holds two different moving bars. The spring/wire as mentioned, is circular 7/8” and it has a wire like a finger 3/8” going straight down from the circle/ring shape and the finger has a slight crook to it. Above the circle/ ring shape, the wire bends and is approximately 1/4”. I only unscrewed two screws. I can’t figure out where this spring would have come from. Do you have any ideas? Secondly, I cannot figure where one flat washer goes. It has a tiny finger going down inside the circle of the washer. The washer reminds me somewhat of the metal washer that goes inside the tension control that you have a video of Singer 457. But the tiny finger goes down inside the circle whereas the washer in the video of 457 the finger goes up above the washer. Thank you. Alicia

It's pretty much like this one except taking the front or back cover off to replace the top gear on the vertical shaft, I still cannot get to the worn out bevel gear. It looks like I would need to unscrew everything from the top just to get to that gear. I am not going to do that, way too many things to unscrew just to get to that gear. • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  4 года назад

      Too sad 😢 There are some models that you have to remove the top arm (and everything attached) to pull the gear and shaft out the top. I've never seen a 360 but I do have the parts diagram for it. It looks like all the covers can be removed, not just the top, but front, back, motor, etc. Now there could still me a metal frame inside that blocks you. That is how the model 353 is. If you'd like the parts diagrams just email andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask. No charge. I'll also say I have emails from folks who really wanted to keep a family machine like yours and they found ways to drill holes, or enlarge openings, usually in the back but also front under cover and could get the gear off the shaft then follow my video pulling just the shaft down. By using BBQ sticks, wires, pliers, hemostats they got the new gear into the machine. They admitted it was not easy, but they just were not going to follow the 12 to 15 step process of dismantling the whole top of the machine. If it is a gonner, don't throw it away but give to Goodwill. eBay sellers buy them and sell the parts off of them. Just the tension unit can fetch almost $20, let alone the covers, motor, wiring, etc.
      If you do look for a new one consider a nice vintage one a little older, 237,337,338,403A. No plastic gears but very strong models. You can find videos of them on my playlist page here: ruclips.net/channel/UCUSPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4wplaylists?view_as=public Best of luck, Sharon.

      Congratulations on owning such a rare machine! No, this gear won't work for you. I DO NOT have any records for model 359 to look up the part numbers. I don't think it was ever sold in the USA. Other nearby model numbers, like 353, 354, 360 have a shaft and gear combination that must be replaced from the top of the machine after removing the horizontal arm shaft. I DO NOT know if that is the case with your 359. Here is the part I mean: www.sewingpartsonline.com/arm-shaft-w-gear-singer-445491.aspx?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6JKeq_206wIVfT2tBh1AJAOEEAQYBiABEgKAxfD_BwE A repair like that is much more difficult than the one in my video. What is confusing to me is the pictures I found of the 359 model looks so much like the 327K model. Like twins of different colors. ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKKHFzTFVJrwVQT6hMfXxFHt
      If the 359 mechanics are similar to the 327 or like the 457 in the video then maybe the gear can come out the front like my video, but I have no experience with your model. You have to remove the gear and see the part number on it to know what replacement gear to use.

    Absolutely agreed about the plastic that that gear was made of. Here's the thing... The plastic gear that it meshes with, does NOT deteriorate like that. I think this is an early example of planned obsolescence. They knew the difference in the plastics. And intentionally made this particular gear out of the sort of plastic that would deteriorate.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  3 года назад

      That may be true. There are a handfull of models from that 5 to 10 year period that have that gear, and they all have a breakage problem. It usually takes about 25 to 30 years before they broke, so if they planned that, they had sold the company before it happened.
