Agh!!!! Yay I just found one on the street and it’s looks great and works outside of that. It’s my first project machine. Hopefully I can pull it off with this video ❤
Exactly the information I was searching for. I've justbeen given a 427 and the same cog has completely shattered. I've already stripped it down following your video and the cog is on order so fingers crossed that mine too will stitch again. Thank you for a fabulous video
I Just bought a Stylist 413...broken vertical shaft. It looks good otherwise. Thank you for this video. I was going to dump it, until I saw how to fix it. I didn't think I could do it, but now, I think I will be able to once the gear comes in. Really appreciate your close up views.
The machine I used in this video wasn't crazy about giving up that gear either, just hit the screw with some penetrating oil and heat from a hair dryer (don't use a heat gun) and she should break free. It might take a few tries...
Thank you so much for making this superb video, Bob! With no service instructions available for replacing that gear, this is a lifesaver! I just got a 413 in cabinet and, wouldn't ya know it, that gear on top of the vertical shaft is shattered, pieces of it are strewn all around inside. It's a black gear, so if what you say is true, it's an aftermarket one. You mention an 'adjusters manual'. Is that one for the 416-418? Thanks again!
Hi I have a question if I may but I changed the top gear on my 413 Singer machine, at first it was too tall so I did grind off some of the bottom and when I got it all back together, set the timing and then tried it out it worked fine for a little while then with the vibration the 2 screws (which I need an allen key for) ended up falling out so I had to do it all over again, same thing happened. I thought I had tightened the screws tight enough, couldn't tighten them anymore. Do you know if it can be fixed or do I have to get a new top gear and do it all over again? TIA
Perfect timing! I just did a gear replacement on a 413 last week. You shouldn't have to grind the bottom side of that top gear at all. There are a couple of different gears that are the correct diameter and fit the shaft size, but are slightly different (even by just a few thousandths) in height. The gear number you need is 155819. I have had excellent results with gear 155819 sourced from Sewing Parts Online.
@@BobFowlerWorkshop I saw that one and it does look like the one I got but when I put it on the machine wouldn't work not until I shaved it down a little. I saw on Andytube's video where someone had said that but now for some reason the screws keep vibrating out and I'm not sure why or how to fix it.
Is there a way to inspect the motor of this machine? I was given a 413 and discovered several areas of rust and corrosion in it. I'm not sure its worth a try to restore it. Thank you.
Wow. This was made concurrently with my 401A, give or take a year or two. My 401A should be due for major service in about January 2324, or so. These, I remember from my childhood, slipped timing if you asked them to sew three layers of finest silk. No wonder SINGER lost ground virtually overnight.
Great video thank you! I'm a little bit in the dark as to why a No. 18 needle is necessary for timing this type of machine. I would have thought that the eye of any size needle would be at the right height and as long as the hook is at the centre of the needle one would be good to go. Is it because it's easier to see the centre of an size 18 needle?
I’ve been watching other videos on this exact procedure and was wondering why you didn’t make mention of marking the shaft to ensure the set screw is properly lined up. I’m guessing if it isn’t lined up, you’ll know when you go to tighten it? I was just wondering.
You're absolutely correct, if it's not lined up, you will feel it. You can, of course, mark the shaft, but I usually don't bother because the flat that is filed into the shaft is real obvious when you're attaching the new gear. Marking the shaft with a sharpie would be OK if you were so inclined, but I've never found it necessary.
Would you know what the size of the shaft is, 7 or 8mm. Just got a replacement gear for my 447 8mm shaft, but the profile is not the same. It fits, but not running smoothly, more like a clicking noise every time a new tooth engage. I wonder if the 413 and 447 is the same gear.
That's a real good question. I took in a 457 yesterday for a gear replacement (gear is on order as I type), but I can't find a listing from my usual sources for the 447 - probably because it was a low production numbers model and only made in the UK. Email me at argosybob@gmail.com about this and I'll put you on my "keep your eyes open for this part" list.
I replace the gear on this machine replace the belt timed it works now ran real slow before the repair now it doesn't seem like it wants to turn........any ideas? The motor free wheel is fine seems like it has power when you try to hook it up to the hand wheel it acts like it wants to turn but does not.
The flexistitch and wiper are throwing me off. It looks like you have the wiper swinging freely and mine is in the confined space to the far right bottom. Please clarify.
Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! This is my first time attempting to repair a sewing machine - so far so good, thanks to your videos!

It's a fun job, replacing gears...
Great video Bob, a job well done. I'll get the donated 413 back on my bench inworking order awaiting the next owner.

Thanks for the video, I just fixed my gifted 416.
Really clearly explained, thanks!

Brilliant. Thanks very much.
Excellent video... a lot simpler than I anticipated. well done... Thank You... Regards from Wales.
It really isn't that hard...
Thank you for such an informative video. You did a great job explaining and showing us what you were doing.
Glad it was helpful! It's one of those jobs that scares people off, but really isn't all that hard.
Thank you for sharing it is helpful to me. This is a good quality singer, worth repairing
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for a very clear video. Unfortunately I can't undo the screw on the vertical gear, it seems really hard on. Any ideas please?

Impact screwdriver. You'll have to get a longer bit.

@@BobFowlerWorkshop Thanks Bob. I guess one can't go wrong following the adjuster's manual. I'll have to get a few #18's.

Where can I find the flat nut and screw for the cover plate, it’s missing on my 413? Thanks

Hi Bob i have a singer 248 the vertical top gear broke, do you have a video how to fix it. please help.
No, sorry I don't, but the process is very similar. If I get a 248 in, I'll shoot a video.

Hi I need to ask if you can show me how I replace top gear for singer 457 u 105 industrial sewing machine zikzag (the disc for threes titch zikzag)
I'll see if I can locate one of those machines, but I don't have one at the moment.

Because of the shitty gear, you have to buy a lot of tools and other auxiliary equipment
The manufacturers are very cunning, the main drive gears are made of shit, probably so that there was work in the services for servicing such models 👎
