Yes, I see it that way too. This is only done in rich countries like Germany. If something is defective, they will most likely replace it and that is what they call repairing. This is usually unaffordable and more expensive than a new sewing machine. In addition, there are very few good sewing machine mechanics in Germany and they prefer to sell new machines instead of repairing them. It is not uncommon for the machine to be returned even more broken than when it was handed in. Some people prefer to repair them themselves. Strange, in the past you could have everything repaired, but today repairs are too expensive and it is cheaper to buy new instead of repairing.
I have a Singer 247. It sews beautifully. But last owner cracked a gear. Repairman said it wouldn’t be worth fixing. Maybe not to him. Thanks to you, I now have the confidence to try it myself! Thank you for sharing
He meant that for the time it takes to do it he would have to charge more than the price of a new machine. In the auto insurance business this is called a total loss.
My new favorite video, Andre. A deeper dive than my 100 plus parts of Cute video. People can see what a machine entailed in the mid '70's. I have some idea of what it takes to storyboard, record, edit, render, and upload this video. Superb production values. So nicely done, Sir. Thanks for sharing.
This is the most beautiful repair video I have ever seen. The layout of the parts is wonderful, the closeups of the parts assembly is great, and the video editing is awesome. It must have taken as long to assemble the video as it did to rebuild the sewing machine. I came for hints to disassemble my Singer 57820 machine (broken reverse lever), and while your video didn't provide any answers to my question, it was wonderful to watch.
Fantastic video! This was an invaluable reference when I attempted to replace this same gear. I ended up discovering a way to replace the gear without having to remove the top shaft. I took pictures and made a video although it is only a slideshow of photos and my stammering narration. I referenced your video a few times in my video and even included a few screenshots of yours. I linked your video in my description along with Andy Tube and a guy in France who 3D printed a replacement gear. Thanks so much for taking the time to document your process with such high production values!
Andre, not only you make awesome training videos, this one is sick!! I am a pilot too, like to put things apart, and just bought a sewing machine 2 months ago that doesn't work so well, your video will be massive help to fix it!! Million thanks for this super tutorial! Respect!!
O, man... That's sick man! RESPECT! Good sewing machines seems quite expencive, but if you tske them appart you figure out that they are actually not so expencive. RESPECT once again!
Brillant! And very helpul, too! Thank you so much for this great video. Only flaw I spotted was in 17:04, bobbin should turn counter-clockwise, if I'm not mistkaken. But again, brillant work, fantastic photography. Three cheers to the entire team behind this masterpiece. Oh, and what a joy to see neat fingernails in the super close-ups :)
For both of my sewing machines (brother and singer) yes, the thread bobin should be put on the side that makes the thread want to go to the right and then you take the thread and make it go to the left, through the slot (Hope i'm clear, english is not my native language). I've been told that it would help with below thread tension
Very nice video and that you show everyone with recordings. I wouldn't trust myself at all to dismantle the whole machine into all parts? I'm wondering how you can move the feeder up and down when you have the You have not yet installed the feed dog spring in the shaft.
What a job! And what a beautiful machine is that. They can make something in the old days 😄 Very nice movie and I guess it's not the first time you do this, fixing a needle machine. Great!
Unbelievable! You are a very patient magician! Great respect for making this machine work but also for the enormous time you must have spent to make this nice movie!
Great work! I'm in the process of replacing the same plastic gear. When l took the covers off 2 half circle plastic pieces (small about 1/2" wide) fell out and I don't recall seeing them or dealing with them. Can you help me and tell me where do they fit? Thanks
Did u take the hook out? The thing the bobbin case sits in, I’m trying to get mine out to de rust it and I can’t figure out how to get that one screw on the left back which holds the little elbow which is in the way of removing it out.
Oh, mines different the spring isn’t held on by two little nuts and there is a spacer ring with a tiny hex lug screw to hold it firm on the hook post above the hook gear.
Thanks to @Andy Tube and @Andre Replaced the gear and my mom is really happy to see the machine work again. The place I got stuck was at two places: 1) Screw in front opens counter clockwise 2) Spring lock is present on top. Please advice how often I need to grease the machine.
It should still be possible to find the instruction manual on the internet, (with your sewing machine reference.) It will answer a lot of questions concerning maintenance.
Por favor alguien que me ayude, Como se llaman el engranaje que lleva en la parte superior este modelo de maquina? Yo tengo una pero esa pieza se me partio y la extravie y no se con que referencia comprarla
OMG, that is insane! I can't believe you got it all back together, that is quite an accomplishment! Can you tell me where that gear is located at 01:09 ? It is so close up I can't tell where it is on the machine.

Hello, I followed your car, it's superb. I have a little problem I don't remember where the longest spring is going! (The one above is handed over) In the video we do not see for the longest. Can you help me?
how do u learn to put it back all together? I have a vintage singer just like yours and the cam stack gear has broken. I dono how to fix it. Its ecpensive the send for repair. Now its just collecting dust in the store room. I am not brave enough to take it apart. I dont have confident to put it back together
Amazing video man! Crazy to think how much engineering and evolution have gone into the making of sewing machines that you can pick up relatively cheaply. All the goodies are hidden inside out of sight. I would imagine you have to know about all the adjustments and settings to be able to reassemble the machine correctly and have a manual hidden around somewhere? Or you're just the macho studly knowledge master and have a feel for the tension on everything? Now that you have the "beast" back together and are crankin' out the little windsocks, you have to up the challenge to the one I offered on your FB page. Let me know if you need a repost here.

when replacing this gear set don't use cheap Chinese parts as i did. for the many hours of work this sewing machine takes to destruct and reassemble it's frustrating when the parts you install are not got the same height in cast teeth and not perfectly centred. i learn from my mistake . please always use genuine parts and save yourself time. very good and helpful video!

The time you took to source the parts and the care you took to disassemble, clean, layout and reassemble all while videoing the process was compelling and satisfied the OCD in me.
