after 25 years I have had to say goodbye to my yard and workshop, I live on a boat so have had to get rid / pass on a lot of tools from lathes to engine cranes and 5 trucks plus a live on bus ranging in physical weight from 3000kgs to 7500kgs, watching videos like this makes me happy to see people still showing how to make things. I have a waste fuel heater and it works well, no external flame so clean water free hot air. Keeps me toasty on the cold days / nights.
It sounds like you've made quite a big change in your life! It's great that you found a way to stay warm with your waste fuel heater. Best of luck with your boat life and keep enjoying those creative videos!
Iv been thinking about doing that ,buying a pontoon, and building a styrfoam shach on it and sail away . and I want to use waist oil to produce hot water, heat and electricity .
Very cool, the Buick Dealership I worked at used a waste oil heater to warm the shop in the winter, all of the used oil and gasoline from oil and fuel filter changes went into a 100 gallon tank thru the spring and summer and was full by winter!! At the start of winter we would clean the burner and light it, with the 10 overhead doors being opened thru the day to bring cars in and out of the shop it was a cheap way to heat!!!
I worked for a towing company/scrap yard and they used a waste oil furnace for the shop. It worked quite well. It did have some problems occasionally. I went in on a Saturday to find the whole shop filled with smoke cause the heat exchanger cracked. It was missing paint off the side of the furnace housing because it got oil with too much gasoline in it one time and it got extremely hot.
@juliogonzo2718 With all of us Mechanics opening and closing the Garage doors all day it would have cost a fortune heating with natural gas, plus it also heated the body shop too!!! We did have natural gas heaters in the service lanes but they were efficient enough for that use!!!
Yes thank you for watching our video it's great where you are also using a waste oil heater right? Yes waste oil heating water costs extremely low and to make one directly is not worth much money and waste oil is something that is almost available right? Yes when done correctly it has a very high temperature of up to 700 degrees Celsius and there is no black smoke so when it enters the air when the temperature is high when it is chemically it will burn completely creating a blue flame like gas Thank you for giving us positive words do you have any suggestions for us to do better Please let us know We will improve the product further to contribute to bringing more value and benefits to audiences around the world Thank you

Well done....Remember safety is paramount....Can't be used indoors as products of combustion are toxic and cause death...Can only be used in a well ventilated area...that's with any combustion process....recommend using a stainless steel flue vented directly outside of the heating environment so you get the BTU heat from the flue as well.Stay safe.
Great advice! Safety is crucial-ventilating properly and using a stainless steel flue ensures safe combustion and maximizes heat efficiency. Stay safe!
Love it makes me think of cooking a pot of stew or beans on top of our kerosene heaters back in the day! Enjoyed thanks for sharing God Bless u and urs!
This is true ha. However I wouldn't cook anything on this. Nor would I want that venting inside a living space or workspace. Old/used motor oil contains some pretty narley chemicals and if you I breath it long enough can cause some pretty bad health issues.
Lanair makes a waste oil burning/ forced air heater, that is EPA compliant. And YES, you can burn dirty oil, cleanly, as long as you preheat the chamber first.

I like it. Its burning efficient with the blower fan so should be minimal fumes and separating the burning chamber from the outer hot air chamber just completes it. Works just like a diesel heater so using it as a heater should be good so long as your welds dont have holes😉
@@dakotachristianson3756 Not possible, carbon monoxide would still be a concern. I think the stove would have to operate outside with the secondary heat going into a structure.
@@dakotachristianson3756 even though he didn't make it very clear, I'm pretty sure the stove part goes on the outside of the building and the flexible duct that he showed gets routed to blow the hot air inside the building.
@@josephoxenham6142if your not familiar with a properly set up waste oil burning stove than just say so lmfao. You have not the slightest clue of what your talking about. I've been around them for years and never a health concern one set up right they are very efficient. the epa approves and encourages there use, as it is safer to convert/burn a potentially hazardous waste onsite
my friend had a big one of these in his big workshop I thought it was fantastic and the large area was definitely not cold even with the bay door open all day
I had built a waste oil heater a few years ago, and it does produce a lot of heat. However it also produces a lot of carbon buildup at the bottom where the oil sits that has to be regularly cleaned out. The other challenge was when for some reason it would blow the flame out, and then you have waste oil everywhere. It just wasn't that reliable and you had to baby sit the thing for fear that something would go wrong.
@@esra_erimez It's false, he's using Gas. The oil almost doesn't burn, if you blow it it goes out. Fire can be seen coming out of the center blower inside the oil container. If it blows air it should not ignite, only stoke the fire in another place, but flame comes out because it blows Gas.
I seldom see any concern expressed about the heavy metal contamination in waste oil when burned. There is a great centerfugal oil extraction method that removes some of it but the only way I can imagine to be really sure is to "crack" it all over again and of course that takes quite a bit of heat too. How can you win?
You raise an important concern regarding the heavy metal contamination in waste oil. When burning waste oil, especially from automotive or industrial sources, it can contain a variety of harmful contaminants, including heavy metals (like lead, cadmium, and chromium), as well as other toxic byproducts that may be released into the air when burned. While centrifugal oil extraction can help remove some contaminants by separating out solid particles and some heavier impurities, it doesn't fully address the issue of hazardous metals that may still be present in the oil. To fully eliminate these contaminants, you would need a more complex process, such as "cracking" or refining the oil back to a purer state, which would require significant heat and specialized equipment. This process, however, is energy-intensive and costly, which could make it impractical for most DIY or home heating systems. To reduce the risks of burning waste oil, here are some possible solutions: Filtration: Advanced filtration systems could help remove larger contaminants, but they won't fully eliminate heavy metals or some of the finer impurities. Multi-stage filtration, combining mechanical, chemical, and carbon filters, can improve oil purity, but the risk of heavy metals remains. Exhaust Scrubbing: Installing a scrubber or an afterburner system in the exhaust could help trap or neutralize harmful emissions, including particulate matter and toxic fumes. This would help reduce the impact of burning contaminated oil on air quality. Pre-Treatment of the Oil: If you plan to burn waste oil regularly, you could look into oil refining or cracking methods that break down the contaminants before combustion. This might involve heating the oil in controlled conditions, but again, it would require a lot of energy and specialized equipment. Monitoring and Testing: Periodically testing the oil for contaminant levels (especially heavy metals) could help you understand its quality and whether it's safe to burn. You could also monitor the emissions to ensure they stay within safe levels. In summary, while it is possible to burn waste oil, doing so safely requires a multi-step approach to reduce contamination. The best way to win is to balance efficiency, safety, and environmental impact. Using clean or filtered oil, or even considering alternative fuels, could be an effective compromise for home heating systems.
@@lmtnThe combustion of used motor vehicle oils does entail the problem of heavy metals. Many heavy metals can be filtered out via fiber filtration and centrifuge equipment as I have at my shop. On the exhaust end, you can use the tendency of heavy metals to form sulfides to create a reactive filter - but this is outside the capability of a home shop. A cooling tower with soot traps might be more feasible if visibility is not an issue.
We made a version of that. We made a combustion chamber and put it inside an old wood stove. Had a blower tube coming in the back. And I forget what we used for the oil tank but we would use air pressure to feed the oil. Used it many years. Before the boss got a propane heater.

@@lmtn Yes, practice. Practice and make sure you are comfortable. Anchor your torch hand on your free hand and make sure you can do the whole weld without repositioning. There are youtube videos on the subject. Refine your search words.
Best design I've seen yet. Not sure I like the way you have the drip setup but that's easily changed. Other then the drip and making a tweak to the exhaust I'm definitely building this bad boy
Thank you! I’m glad you like the design. The drip setup and exhaust can definitely be tweaked to suit your preferences. Feel free to make adjustments as you build it!
Yes everything is fantastic except the smell. It is almost impossible to operate it indoors. The one shown at the end of the video, working in a separate area is the best. Congratulations to the manufacturer!
Thank you for your comment! I agree, the smell can be a challenge indoors. The separate area setup definitely seems like a smarter choice. Appreciate your feedback and support!
You should catch up the air from outside. Otherwise, the heated air you blow into the next room will be the polutet Air from the burner! BTW In europe, the greens will hit you to death doing this. 😂😂
Awesome build. I’m thinking of building one of these, thank you for the video. I am not the one to put down anyone’s hard work. I’m just wondering about the tack welding technique. Just a suggestion; If you play around with your tuning knobs, adjust your amperage down and adjust the wire feed comparing how fast the wire melts per amp temperature, you could get a continuous flow to form a solid welds with better penetration instead of tack welds.
@@AaronSchwarz42 Muliptle tacks, alternating sides in a pie cut pattern similar to how you tighten lug nuts, will prevent the warping. The amount of tacks will vary depending on size. Then follow up with multiple good penetrating beads in a similar pattern eventually connecting all your clean beads (lay some dimes). Will most importantly penetrate, and prevent any pinhole leaks as well, without warping. Finish by chipping, grinding, and polishing smooth.
Thanks for the suggestion! Adjusting the amperage and wire feed speed for better penetration and continuous flow is a great idea for improving weld quality. I'll definitely give it a try!
Thank you for reminding us so much Yes, the exhaust from burning oil also has a lot of toxic gases, right? You must be a professor Yes We will try to burn it far away from the area alone, just insulating it inside, is that okay? Yes, please give your opinions and suggestions Thank you

I built a variation that used no power. Basically I had 4" exhaust pipe with a heater box in the middle. At the bottom I had 1/4" pipe wrapped a few inches from the bottom. Fuel was supplied through this pipe from a tank above regulated by a valve. At the bottom was a catcher basin made with a 5" or 6" section of exhaust pipe. Dripping a bit of fuel in the catcher and lighting it would heat the 1/4" tube wrapped around the 4" pipe. This would create a "steam" jet aimed in the center of the 4" pipe creating an updraft. The box above had baffles inside to direct the heat to it shell. The exhaust out the top of the box could come out the side giving you a hot plate. All the fumes were outside and it was smokeless. The box would get red hot and heat us out of the room. Enclosing the box with an outer box you could vent the air where you want, with or without a fan. I designed this after looking at smudge pots people near me were using. They were very smokey and unregulated. I think mine used far less fuel for the same heat.

You could make a U bend in the fuel feed pipe to prevent back smoke or potential flames. Don't forget to use the fan at all times or remove it if not turned on or it will melt! A funnel under the drip would be useful too :)

To avoid smelling the fume, put copper coil around the flame inside the burner/stove. The copper coil has hot water circulating to the side walls of the rooms and back into the heater/stove. The hot copper is sufficient to heat the room. Keep the stove away from the room

I built one of these and put it inside a whole house woold stove. What he doesn't tell you is that main pot burns out and must be replaced after 2-3 months. I use old brake rotors on top. They boil away after one week. I use 6 gallons of waste oil in 5 hours. I run it 9 hours a day all winter in New Hampshire. My design is simpler because of burning through parts it's not worth making it complicated. Mine heats a 7 car auto shop. My welder cost 1000.00 bucks and we build them out of scap from the local metal supply joint. I save 3-4000.00 a year in heating costs and get old engine oil from all the local garages.
Yes, as long as the area is well-ventilated, this type of stove can work well as a heater or cooker. Proper ventilation ensures that harmful fumes, such as carbon monoxide, are safely dissipated and don't pose a danger to health. It's also important to regularly check and maintain the stove to ensure its safe operation.
That's interesting! The Bhathi method with diesel is a traditional technique in India, generating high heat for cooking oil. It's a practical and efficient solution for certain cooking needs.
This would be great if one could harness the heat through a large heat exchanger and an exhaust vent pipe. Or it’s gonna kill ya lol 😂 But awesome concept for utilizing something otherwise looked at as waste. 🎉
@ oh I don’t profess to know that brother. I just think a large heat exchanger or heat box with a good vent pipe and possibly a copper coil water heat exchanger would add great value for an off grid purpose. Perhaps even for cooking application with a proper deign and I am no engineer lol I think practical applications you built is genius. Great work my friend. 🙏🏻
I can remember as I was a child, decades ago, we have had a oil heater as well. This was so dangerous all the time and you could smell it every time. And it was a closed oven, not a dangerous, glowing thing like this.
I understand your concern. Old oil heaters were definitely risky, with fumes and potential fire hazards. Modern designs aim to be safer, but proper ventilation is always key for safety.

Great video, you are very good with your tools, and now I know what I'm going to do with my waste oil tank. I have a garage and a shop that both need heating and I'm tired of buying propane 👌 I was going to build a waste oil forge a while back but ended up buying a pre-made propane one, so ive just been filling my oil tank every oil change. This would be a great addition to the shop and garage 👌 and keep my tank from getting full to boot I appreciate your great work, you got a new subscriber here buddy 👍
Thank you so much for the kind words and support! I'm glad the video inspired you. A waste oil heater is a great way to repurpose your old oil while heating your shop and garage efficiently. Best of luck with your build, and welcome to the channel! Appreciate you subscribing! 👍

I worked at used a waste oil
heater to warm the shop in the
winter, all of the used oil and gasoline from oil and fuel filter
changes went into a 100 gallon tank thru the spring and summer and was full by winter!!
@juliogonzo2718 With all of us

cost a fortune heating with natural

were efficient enough for that use!!!
And they paid big bucks for it because theirs actually worked, unlike this fake shit.
@HueToobBlows What makes you say its fake? I'd have to see this one in person to 100% believe it works, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

@@MB5rider81Seems like our friend from Iraq has a better grasp of the English language than you do.
Sounds like a tricky setup! The carbon buildup and potential for the flame to blow out definitely make it less reliable. Regular maintenance is key.
I'm really impressed that you managed to (mostly) hide the gas pipe.
So, it's using gas and not oil?
Wait! You mean a couple scraps of burning paper won't light motor oil? Shocked, I tell you, shocked! 😆😆😆

Fake, totally fucking fake. And you're an idiot if you believe it.
To reduce the risks of burning waste oil, here are some possible solutions:
Filtration: Advanced filtration systems could help remove larger contaminants, but they won't fully eliminate heavy metals or some of the finer impurities.

I believe the tack welding method reduces warpage when welding sheet steel.
@@genebartle7715 Pulse dime, cool, pulse dime, cool, does prevent material warping, at expense of less penetration, trade-off
@@AaronSchwarz42 Muliptle tacks, alternating sides in a pie cut pattern similar to how you tighten lug nuts, will prevent the warping. The amount of tacks will vary depending on size. Then follow up with multiple good penetrating beads in a similar pattern eventually connecting all your clean beads (lay some dimes).

Had one in a 4 bay repair shop i worked at in Albuquerque about 10 years ago, worked amazing and was basically free heat. Probably still have it haha
Exactly! These stoves have been around for a while, especially in colder climates, repurposing used oil from junked cars for heat.
That’s awesome! It’s great how effective and cost-efficient those stoves can be, especially in a busy repair shop environment.

Excellent project. Surely there has to be a better oil feed than dripping from an open faucet? Looks like quite a hazard in that regard.
Yeah, a clear plastic tube could be plumbed in for a few bucks more.

great Thanks and your opinion Yes thank you Have a nice weekend
Yes, thank you for watching our video and leaving a comment. I don't understand what you mean, but a stove like this burns at a temperature of about 400 degrees Celsius, then 1 liter of waste oil will last about 4 to 5 hours. If it's good at 700 degrees Celsius, then 1 liter of oil will burn within two hours, which is what you usually do. Wish you a happy weekend. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below. Thank you.
Awesome, thanks for the video and the measurements 👍

Anybody remember " SALAMANDA" hearers that used waste oil . You got them going with welding torch on a Winter morning. This works similar. They used to get red hot.
I remember them, they were around in Australia back in the 70s. Great for outdoor get togethers.
Yep. They were very effective in heating large spaces and they didn't need electricity.
@mjblackam I lived in Austalia 1970s . I ran the Diesel Power Station Port Hedland . Goldsworthy Mineing . Those were the days , Gough Whitlam prime minister. Bob Hawk "When are we having another strike !!". Beer 10$ a box .The place ran on the amber necter.
So this gives me an idea, could you adapt thus as the heat source for a clothes dryer? Just the hot air, so the clothing doesn't smell like waste oil.
Major fire hazard even best case scenario
How would you regulate the heat?
Maybe a hair drier?
@@jjb1974 umm, maybe add air vents along the pipe until you get a constant temp for drying? Or blower could cycle with the temp sensor? If you utilize the blower from the dryer as the blower for the heat source you would have everything you need i think.

That's the kind of fire I need to make fried rice.
You could make a U bend in the fuel feed pipe to prevent back smoke or potential flames. Don't forget to use the fan at all times or remove it if not turned on or it will melt! A funnel under the drip would be useful too :)
Great ideas! The U-bend can help prevent backflow, and the funnel will keep things cleaner. Safety first!
Super Idee!

What about combustion gases 🧐
There is a reason why propane is very popular
no need to buy propane if you can change your own oil and have one of those
I like kerosene
To avoid smelling the fume, put copper coil around the flame inside the burner/stove. The copper coil has hot water circulating to the side walls of the rooms and back into the heater/stove. The hot copper is sufficient to heat the room. Keep the stove away from the room
Thank you for the great suggestion! Using a copper coil for heating is an efficient idea. Have you tried this setup yourself, or do you have tips for optimizing it further?
Because everybody has a metal working shop out back, 1% practical.

How do people add a water section to these and make them into rocket heaters or whatever? Is the water in those versions converted into hydrogen and oxygen to make them burn hotter? 🤔 This would be a nice add-on for the waste oil burner wouldn't it❓

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the compliment. It's great to hear that you enjoy watching the process-it’s always fun to see creative projects come to life. If you ever want to share your own work or need any tips, I’d be happy to help! 😊
That's impressive! Using scrap materials and saving on heating costs is a great way to stay efficient. Great work!

As long as you use in a well ventilated area looks to me like you have a very nice little heater/cook stove.
Thank you

Same method is used in India by cooks..They use diesel. It's called Bhathi (kiln).it's used to create high temp flame for heating oil for cooking.
That's interesting! The Bhathi method with diesel is a traditional technique in India, generating high heat for cooking oil. It's a practical and efficient solution for certain cooking needs.
looks nice ...especially if health and safety is not your priority.
Thank you for your comment! Do you think there are ways to make it safer?
This would be great if one could harness the heat through a large heat exchanger and an exhaust vent pipe.
Or it’s gonna kill ya lol 😂
But awesome concept for utilizing something otherwise looked at as waste. 🎉
Thanks for the comment! How do you think the efficiency of such a system could be improved?
@ oh I don’t profess to know that brother.
I just think a large heat exchanger or heat box with a good vent pipe and possibly a copper coil water heat exchanger would add great value for an off grid purpose.
Perhaps even for cooking application with a proper deign and I am no engineer lol
I think practical applications you built is genius.
