    after 25 years I have had to say goodbye to my yard and workshop, I live on a boat so have had to get rid / pass on a lot of tools from lathes to engine cranes and 5 trucks plus a live on bus ranging in physical weight from 3000kgs to 7500kgs, watching videos like this makes me happy to see people still showing how to make things.
    I have a waste fuel heater and it works well, no external flame so clean water free hot air.
    Keeps me toasty on the cold days / nights.

    Very cool, the Buick Dealership
    I worked at used a waste oil
    heater to warm the shop in the
    winter, all of the used oil and gasoline from oil and fuel filter
    changes went into a 100 gallon tank thru the spring and summer and was full by winter!! At the start of winter we would clean the burner and light it, with the 10 overhead doors being opened thru the day to bring cars in and out of the shop it was a cheap way to heat!!!

    • @juliogonzo2718

      I worked for a towing company/scrap yard and they used a waste oil furnace for the shop. It worked quite well. It did have some problems occasionally. I went in on a Saturday to find the whole shop filled with smoke cause the heat exchanger cracked. It was missing paint off the side of the furnace housing because it got oil with too much gasoline in it one time and it got extremely hot.

      @juliogonzo2718 With all of us
      Mechanics opening and closing the
      Garage doors all day it would have
      cost a fortune heating with natural
      gas, plus it also heated the body
      shop too!!! We did have natural gas
      heaters in the service lanes but they
      were efficient enough for that use!!!

      Yes thank you for watching our video it's great where you are also using a waste oil heater right? Yes waste oil heating water costs extremely low and to make one directly is not worth much money and waste oil is something that is almost available right? Yes when done correctly it has a very high temperature of up to 700 degrees Celsius and there is no black smoke so when it enters the air when the temperature is high when it is chemically it will burn completely creating a blue flame like gas Thank you for giving us positive words do you have any suggestions for us to do better Please let us know We will improve the product further to contribute to bringing more value and benefits to audiences around the world Thank you

    I had built a waste oil heater a few years ago, and it does produce a lot of heat. However it also produces a lot of carbon buildup at the bottom where the oil sits that has to be regularly cleaned out. The other challenge was when for some reason it would blow the flame out, and then you have waste oil everywhere. It just wasn't that reliable and you had to baby sit the thing for fear that something would go wrong.

    I seldom see any concern expressed about the heavy metal contamination in waste oil when burned. There is a great centerfugal oil extraction method that removes some of it but the only way I can imagine to be really sure is to "crack" it all over again and of course that takes quite a bit of heat too. How can you win?

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  2 месяца назад +3

      You raise an important concern regarding the heavy metal contamination in waste oil. When burning waste oil, especially from automotive or industrial sources, it can contain a variety of harmful contaminants, including heavy metals (like lead, cadmium, and chromium), as well as other toxic byproducts that may be released into the air when burned.
      While centrifugal oil extraction can help remove some contaminants by separating out solid particles and some heavier impurities, it doesn't fully address the issue of hazardous metals that may still be present in the oil. To fully eliminate these contaminants, you would need a more complex process, such as "cracking" or refining the oil back to a purer state, which would require significant heat and specialized equipment. This process, however, is energy-intensive and costly, which could make it impractical for most DIY or home heating systems.
      To reduce the risks of burning waste oil, here are some possible solutions:
      Filtration: Advanced filtration systems could help remove larger contaminants, but they won't fully eliminate heavy metals or some of the finer impurities. Multi-stage filtration, combining mechanical, chemical, and carbon filters, can improve oil purity, but the risk of heavy metals remains.
      Exhaust Scrubbing: Installing a scrubber or an afterburner system in the exhaust could help trap or neutralize harmful emissions, including particulate matter and toxic fumes. This would help reduce the impact of burning contaminated oil on air quality.
      Pre-Treatment of the Oil: If you plan to burn waste oil regularly, you could look into oil refining or cracking methods that break down the contaminants before combustion. This might involve heating the oil in controlled conditions, but again, it would require a lot of energy and specialized equipment.
      Monitoring and Testing: Periodically testing the oil for contaminant levels (especially heavy metals) could help you understand its quality and whether it's safe to burn. You could also monitor the emissions to ensure they stay within safe levels.
      In summary, while it is possible to burn waste oil, doing so safely requires a multi-step approach to reduce contamination. The best way to win is to balance efficiency, safety, and environmental impact. Using clean or filtered oil, or even considering alternative fuels, could be an effective compromise for home heating systems.

    • @rustylugnut755
      @rustylugnut755 2 месяца назад +2

      @@lmtnThe combustion of used motor vehicle oils does entail the problem of heavy metals. Many heavy metals can be filtered out via fiber filtration and centrifuge equipment as I have at my shop. On the exhaust end, you can use the tendency of heavy metals to form sulfides to create a reactive filter - but this is outside the capability of a home shop. A cooling tower with soot traps might be more feasible if visibility is not an issue.

    I’m just wondering about the tack welding technique. Just a suggestion; If you play around with your tuning knobs, adjust your amperage down and adjust the wire feed comparing how fast the wire melts per amp temperature, you could get a continuous flow to form a solid welds with better penetration instead of tack welds.

Will most importantly penetrate, and prevent any pinhole leaks as well, without warping. Finish by chipping, grinding, and polishing smooth.

    I built a variation that used no power. Basically I had 4" exhaust pipe with a heater box in the middle. At the bottom I had 1/4" pipe wrapped a few inches from the bottom. Fuel was supplied through this pipe from a tank above regulated by a valve. At the bottom was a catcher basin made with a 5" or 6" section of exhaust pipe. Dripping a bit of fuel in the catcher and lighting it would heat the 1/4" tube wrapped around the 4" pipe. This would create a "steam" jet aimed in the center of the 4" pipe creating an updraft. The box above had baffles inside to direct the heat to it shell. The exhaust out the top of the box could come out the side giving you a hot plate. All the fumes were outside and it was smokeless. The box would get red hot and heat us out of the room. Enclosing the box with an outer box you could vent the air where you want, with or without a fan. I designed this after looking at smudge pots people near me were using. They were very smokey and unregulated. I think mine used far less fuel for the same heat.

I built one of these and put it inside a whole house woold stove. What he doesn't tell you is that main pot burns out and must be replaced after 2-3 months. I use old brake rotors on top. They boil away after one week. I use 6 gallons of waste oil in 5 hours. I run it 9 hours a day all winter in New Hampshire. My design is simpler because of burning through parts it's not worth making it complicated. Mine heats a 7 car auto shop. My welder cost 1000.00 bucks and we build them out of scap from the local metal supply joint. I save 3-4000.00 a year in heating costs and get old engine oil from all the local garages.
