I hear you, frankenturbo is appealing because of price but you still have to tune it which is additional money of course. I'm in the same dilemma at the moment. Stage 2 at the moment and can't decide whether to go Ko4 or APR gtx kit.
Thank you John and Matt, this video has given me some much needed perspective. I own a 2005 Volvo S40, T5 AWD 6-speed, with an array of bolt-ons and just shy of 125k miles and I've gone back and forth more times than I can count with the "refresh or trade out" proposition as daily use manifests into ever increasing slop. The refresh I've had penned out would include - among other things - a set of KW V3 and a K16 turbo swap. With upgraded intercooler, intake, downpipe, exhaust, brakes, 19x8 wheels and a tune the car is already fairly well off... but I've discovered some pet peeves in the few years of daily driving such a car. Like we saw with John's GLI, my S40 also takes excessive input to point and load up, rides stiff and rubs, traits that will almost certainly remain even after a refresh... not to mention the 500lb gorillas that are wheel-hop and understeer. It's painful to admit but neither my love of the styling nor the 'uniqueness factor' are enough to keep me from lamenting the inherent shortcomings of the platform and those in the same realm, like the GLI.
These are so cheaply built compared to the new ones though. "Luxury" car for the third world that was given a stage 0.5 upgrade. I'm not even hating on the company I'm a sucker for VAGs, just that there are better models out there.
Awesome vid glad to see Jshay got his car reviewed. Killer setup on this GLI. TheSmokingTire Id like to see you in a 3.6L VR6 Passat or CC run the canyons, they are great engines and with some mods can really haul. Is there any VR6s coming up on the schedule Matt?
Hayden Finnesand There is an R32 coming up, but no Passats or CC's. I thought about buying a CC when it first came out, because they looked dope as hell for the money, and then I drove one and was like, "oh, this is a Passat." and left.
TheSmokingTire hahaha that's hilarious. They are a face lifted Passat with some luxuries amities added to them but there's nothing wrong with a good old reliable Passat. I have a 2006 3.6L Passat 4Motion and I love it! Sadly I live in South Dakota, otherwise I'd let you take it for a spin. If you ever road trip out to the Black Hills of South Dakota let me know, there is great scenic winding mountain roads to drive.
Kid: "So what GTI owners do is take fourth gear out of this one and put it in theirs."....... Also kid: "well only two people have done it." Matt's reaction was priceless lol
Swapping gears in gearboxes depends a lot on the car. For example lots of people rebuild Honda B-series gearboxes, and many people do a "Frankenstein" setup with the 5th gear from the non-VTEC gearbox for better highway RPM and fuel economy. My Integra GSR's stock gearbox turns nearly 4K at 70 MPH in 5th on the interstate. I would love to have the LS 5th gear which would bring it down to under 3K at 70.
hah.. why is when I was JUST looking into the GLIs and barely finding out they pack some power you post a video about this car? No wonder a Jetta a couple days ago wanted to get frisky with me when I was driving to work. I out accelerated him in the really tight sweeping turns so much that he couldn't catch up. Later on I researched a bit on the car and turns out VW under rates the HP figures! The HP the advertise is closer to the WHP than the CHP. Edit: Also, I wonder why he went for this car when he wanted a car to fix up. How is the aftermarket support for Jettas? Sounds extremely expensive.
Zcypot The new Jettas/GLI are more readily available with OEM+ parts for performance. They share a lot of the same components as the GTI or many other VAG cars and bolt straight on, for example the suspension. This makes the OEM+ upgrades cheaper than aftermarket new parts in general because you can just buy the second hand parts off of wrecked GTIs. In actuality it may be cheaper than you may think.
Zcypot the frankenturbo on his car costs $1300, the 2.0t TSI in his car is used throughout almost all of VW and Audis lineup so there's a huge aftermarket available and parts are fairly inexpensive.
Gli is not expensive at all. MK6 Gli has the same engine as the MK6 GTI. Simple KO4 swap will net you around 320ish who depending on your setup. This all costs about 3.5k parts labor. Or you could keep your stock turbo and tune it for about 600 bucks to get to 285 crank hp and 320tq. I myself have a GLI and love it because its honestly a sleeper. This is coming from a MK5 R32 owner

great car. I have a 30 edition in a manual. Cost a bit more to tune a manual, the dsg will hold most tunes well. Whereas the clutch/pp in the manuals only hold up to around 300 ft/lbs torque
I have watched a couple of these GLI videos and both have said they swapped turbos to the k04. Don't they come with the k04 turbos in them though? Or is it just a certain year that does?
+Tommy J Lucero If your asking about the turbo its a mildly bigger turbo that is found in the Golf R/S3's. On those vehicles they do come from the factory. The K04 is an OEM Borgwarner turbo that since the MK5 yields way more power then it did in the MK4 generation. If you go 100oct APR V3.1 in comparison to stock, you see a jump from 200hp/210tq to 370hp/408tq with supporting mods.
great videos Matt. I will say this about that gear box modification you want to do... just save your money and get it done or buy all the tools, the manual and learn to do it yourself. cause you'll never be happy until you know what your Vette will be like exactly, until you get it the way you want it to be. it's only money right? it comes easily and frequently and you can't take it with you...
Are KW V3s really necessary on a street car? I'm not asking in a "Bruh why would you even buy those?" kinda way but more like I'm thinking about getting some KW coilovers and can't decide if I want to just get the V1s or spend the extra money on the V3s.
R0CKSTAR023 The V3's are adjustable in three ways. So if you plan on having a professional set up your suspension for your needs, corner balancing, aggressive alignment, then it's probably worth it to go for the V3's, as it will give said professional more to work with. If you just want a bolt-in and go solution that will give you a bit more damping power for all-around use, the V1's are nice units.
TheSmokingTire I had been thinking about just going with bolt-in and go, but I think for how long you can use them before they need to be replaced it would be worth it to save a little extra cash to get the extra adjustability. Hmmmmm. Thanks for the reply man.
I have a 16 jetta 1.4 tsi I'm looking to upgrade my turbo, like this set up just get it modified to go to my motor, will it run with everything else stock. Such as piping or will I need it all upgraded
I have a question, I have a limited knowledge of cars but I'm looking into getting a '13 GLI Autobahn... I have also heard of two other versions of the GLI. The MK6(Mark 6) and the DSG, If someone could just explain to me the distinctions between them & which is the best version, based on performance?
As a mark 6 GTI owner, I'm not sure where you're getting the short shifter nonsense. Having come from an 8th gen Civic Si, both the clutch and the shifter felt SOOO much longer when I first got in it. Maybe give one another try.
raise that car a inch put a stiffer sway bar up front ,few degrees of camber(not stance nation) canyon carvers(hot hatches) need wheel travel to stay planted, a low stiff ride is great for the track but I have seen cars bounce and lose traction on a wheel, at speed this is dangerous!, this is way magnetic ride is so great allow damping, travel and stiffness in one ride, 99% of the time stock suspension is the best, hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent from the manufacturer to design these cars, stop buying what everyone says is best and learn how a car works from a mechanical point, then you can understand where factory cheap's out(to save$$$)and improve from there.
MrsGondee Priorities & subjective opinion I guess, personally I'd rather have a car that handles well & safely and is comfortable than something that bounces all over the road, has no grip and looks like it's got broken axles - not that this car is anywhere near that bad, but a lot of people do take it way too far. In any case, the rubbing needs to be addressed - it could well be chewing through all manner of things up underneath the guards.
Blaze Kush Stock suspension, seriously? Maybe on a high performance car, but this is a Jetta, an economy car. They weren't meant to be high performance from the factory. And when you lower and/or stiffen the suspension to handle more power, you're going to have to replace things like dampers. Stock dampers will just blow out with lower/stiffer springs.
Patrick94GSRI have to agree what Patrick94GSR said towards the stock suspension. Yes, the manufacturer does spend a lot on money on research and developement. But then again, every car is built on a budget - and pretty much every part can be made better. And this Jetta is running on KW V3 coilovers - those are one (if not the, for the money) of the best you can buy on this planet.
+SlipknotMaggot0526 Yes it is look.. A direct-shift gearbox (German: Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe[1]), commonly abbreviated to DSG,[2][3] is an electronically controlled dual-clutch[2] multiple-shaft manual gearbox, in a transaxle design - without a conventional clutch pedal,[4]
I like how you're actually having a conversation, these are the best kind of videos

What a great car 300 wheel hp dual clutch not a bad daily
I not sure, but last time i checked a stop sign ment stop not just slow down :)
What road is that I feel I have been on it before
curious...have you driven an Acura tl sh-awd??
R0CKSTAR023 They should be good for more-or-less the life of your car. 100k miles at the absolute minimum.
Corbin? Corbin Dallas??!! CORBIN DALLAS!!

Blaze Kush Well said!
Blaze Kush Nothing wrong with compromising some performance for a stanced look.
Actually a DSG transmission is stick Shift.
No it's not.
+SlipknotMaggot0526
Yes it is look..
A direct-shift gearbox (German: Direkt-Schalt-Getriebe[1]), commonly abbreviated to DSG,[2][3] is an electronically controlled dual-clutch[2] multiple-shaft manual gearbox, in a transaxle design - without a conventional clutch pedal,[4]
drewski If it can shift by itself then it's not a manual, because it AUTOMATICALLY shifts.
+SlipknotMaggot0526 I agree its not a regular "ANALOG" Manual Gearbox, but in theory it is a Manual.
27psi on pump gas on a relatively small turbo? Hope your tune is good.
just got an automatic jetta mk6 tsi, I want my car to sound like yours
