The day has come… we begin the installation of our radiant floor heating system! When deciding what to do for our sub floor, we looked to Shelter Institute for their recommendation and they recommended Warmboard as being someone they had a great experience with time and time again. They haven’t led us astray yet, so off we went. Warmboard has been excellent to work with and while we weren’t all that picky with the radiant in our garage slab as we don’t intend on actually using it, Warmboard has a design team that will take your floor plan and R-Values of your home and create a tubing layout as well as a panel layout for ease of installation. Even though we don’t intend on installing our tubing right away, they provide everything you need to complete the system, so we have it all waiting for us in our garage. Enjoy the first day of the installation!

Thank you, my day is complete again. I am retired and I get up at about 1030 am when the cat wants to go out, I then take my pills, make breakfast and a large raw milk coffee, and sit at my computer to watch your video, after that I watch 3 other people that put up daily videos, get dressed and start doing whatever needs to be done. Since you stopped doing daily videos there has been something missing on you tube. I know it mush be an enormous effort on your side to get videos out and I totally understood when you stopped doing it, but I still missed the videos. I have huge respect for the amount of work that you do and that does not feature the video editing and upload that you have to do also.

To take the guesswork and risk out of drilling into the floor , put some warm water through the pipes somehow and use a thermal camera like a Flir. I have one and it works like a hot damn literally. The loops show up just like xrays. Way better than having to fix a leaking pipe. Cheers

I just want you two to know I'm so glad to see more progress AND videos of it. I am trying to get the whole video thing going and i really look up to your videos as far as cut scenes go as well as what to film and what not to. I think I'm doing alright so far. I really enjoy the longer videos and HOPE to holiness that y'all make a MOVIE about your entire experience! And it could also, maybe, double as a "HOW TO" kinda thing. If not for the building knowledge then at least for the video editing knowledge. I'm hooked and inspired! Thank you for EVERYTHING you do, share, and teach! Much love!!! From a fan.

You worked hard, got a lot done, did a good job. Thanks for sharing. On radiant roulette, it gets COLD there, a heated garage will help prolong the life of every vehicle stored there, besides giving you homeowers a place to work, no matter what the project is.

Your reference to the Warm Board system always baffled me. But now, having actually seen the stuff in this video, it all makes more sense. I've seen a lot of buildings being built over the years (Ontario, Canada) but I've never seen this product before. Looks like it'd be a pretty cool setup for main floor radiant heating.
Thanks for taking the time to record, edit and upload this!

Ok, I enjoy watching your videos, they are quite entertaining. Being a framer may I suggest a couple of must have tools to speed things up a bit.
1- A worm drive Skil saw and drive over that pos sidewinder saw you have with the 580k.
2- A good compressor, framing, 7/16, and siding coil guns.
3- For God sakes get some good nail bags. Put them on in the morning and don't take them for any reason.

    • @ryanjones6966

A regular ole circular saw works just fine untill you get into compound angles up in the rafters, but you are 100% right about the bags. How are you suposed to get any work done if you dont have your tools and hardware on ya all the time?

Alyssa's stance and comment @3:00 - "I'll do it more" reminded me of my grandfather and I working on something together when I was a kid. We had a bunch of bolts going into some part, and I was trying to tighten them down as soon as I put them in. It wasn't working so well, as things weren't lining up very well. Grandpa saw my problem and simply told me: "Son, people are the same. Don't ever tighten down on them until they are all in place." This tenet has worked for me all my life. Good job Alyssa!

You guys are doing the floor system absolutely they way it should be done. i built a P&B house in 1975. I wish we had built the foundation the way you did, however those foam products did not exist back then. Also, the first floor of the house is P&B framed. P&B is very difficult to plumb and still hide the final plumbing. Timber frames are romantic, however they are expensive. If I had to do it over, I would only use heavy beams in the ceilings and the visible roof structure. My outside walls would be 100% block and foam insulated. The house structure would be so air tight it would need an air exchanger. Good luck with your build.

It is possible to pour Laticrete floor leveler over the warm boards for specific areas or zones. For example, if you want a tile floor in your bathroom, you would pour Laticrete after placing the lower wall plates that define the bathroom. Install tile directly on the cured subfloor.

I hope this gets noticed. The business I work for in southern Ontario put radiant in the 20'x10' slab in an "enclosed" patio. The whole room is glass panels and 5 garage doors, so thermal transfer will be significant. We had the thermostat set at 80C on the boiler and that turned out to be too warm. We turned it down to 70C, and on a day that was 3C, the room was perfect temperature. I feel like where you're located, you'll wind up using the radiant in your pad more often than not when we get to December. Kudos to you if you don't, but you were so right to do it when you could. That could wind up being a seriously cold floor in January.

If you have the radiant in the slab anyways you could power it with one or two thermal solar collectors. It won't be really warm, but maybe always keep it above freezing. And depending on where you get the panel it would be really cost effective too. The thermal solar collector could be used to provide warm tap water in the summer as well .

Hey.. I have to say this... I think you will actually use the Slab Radiant .. If you start to heat the slab Early in the season it will help you to keep a constant temperature.. A Slab as a Constant source of steady Temperature is far more efficient over time....
Once the slab is heated it takes less time to keep it at that temp...
A Solid mass is the best way to keep the temp. constant..

In the cooling mode, the heating process is reversed - creating cool, conditioned air throughout the home. Instead of extracting heat from the ground, heat is extracted from the air in your home and either moved back into the earth loop, or used to preheat the water in your hot water tank.

They could use the basement radiant tubing as heatsink for the upper level.

What? No checking with the stud finder to make sure, rather than play radiant roulette for reelz? (Too scary for me.) The warmboard looks like really heavy duty flooring, and you're gluing it down so it will never squeak. Good practices, guys. You should have it done tomorrow.

They had the instructions on their phone as she stated while drinking her tea, that she was going to read the instructions as he had already read them. They also had a long talk showing said directions on their phone as they were loading the boards on the loader.( I will admit that I did skip most of that as sometimes the long drawn out explanations can be tedious, or irritating?) (Sorry guys)

Great job guys. Before your videos, I was not familiar with, "ICF's" or "Warmboard". I had of course heard of radiant heating but only in concrete, not plywood. Neat stuff

I wouldn't be listening to some of these jerks either. They are kicking butt and a lot of know it all " tradesmen " are so negative that they would be ask to leave my job site and never return. A true professional in the trades helps people and negative attitudes do nothing. I have built for forty years and bad attitudes tend to seem to go along with the "know it all" traits that these people have. These people ROCK, so get over it and go accomplish something as well!
