Everyone thinks they want to live in a place where there are no building codes. Many think thins means that literally they can do or build whatever the heck they want. There are rumors that living off grid is illegal. Truth of the matter is, “no building codes” isn’t as glamorous as it may sound, but there are some great aspects to areas that have no building codes which is why we’ve decided to build in such a place. Watch the full video to see the pros and cons of no building codes (or permits) from our perspective and experience.

Eric is a real PRO! Excellent technique using the circular saw to make a cove cut in the foam. They are very lucky to have him on the pour!
Just wanted to say how addicted we have become to this build. Wishing you all the best from England.
Very, very lucky to have that help. Those two are worth their weight in gold. That guy has got skills and killer tools. That lady is kind and patient. Y'all remember the water tank work! Seems like a distant memory now!
You two are the hardest working couple I have ever seen. You have accomplished great things. The couple who has helped you for the last few days have been really busting their asses as well. I am looking forward to the pour.
The amount of work that the four of you did in one day was pretty impressive. You two owe then a great deal. I don't know who the other guy is but he seems to have a wealth of knowledge. Having someone like him helping is better than any internet or youtube video could ever provide. Keep you the great work.
I love watching your story! To see the joy on your faces when you have a lil help is so sweet. And when you keep it real when other times aren't as smooth....I love watching you and think y'all rock. Hugs from Louisiana.
This is a great way to start your day 5AM and I get to see a young couple living their dream. In this strange world we live in you two are doing something that very few people have the guts to undertake. I read the trolls and cant believe that they are so hurtful and rude. Keep up the good work, learn from your mistakes, enjoy and celebrate your victories. Looking forward to seeing you complete your project.
Proud of you two. I remember when my husband and I built our house how happy to see help. 👍 for sure.
Terry and Eric seem like the nicest people!
Was really nice watching Eric and Terri helping out. Eric seems like a God send.
I've enjoyed ALL the videos so far but the last 2 have been a cut above. I really loved the time lapse segments in this one! Thanks for sharing and all the hard work that goes into making these videos!
Shout-out to Eric and Terri great work and job knowledge.
Man Eric saved you guys a lot of time he is awesome
Having Eric and Terry come and help you at this point was great. Having a professional who knows the ins and outs of your situation has great value. I personally thank you both for coming all the way from Missouri to share your expertise and hard work. If one wonders why I would thank them its because they are awesome people.
I agree. I think this would have been an October pour is these two "helpers" had not arrived. If this doesn't show them the value of having someone with experience on the job site, at least periodically, nothing will. If I was Jesse the first thing I would be doing after these guys left would be looking for an experienced construction foremen who wanted to do some moonlighting.
The extra help has really paid off. Great Team Work.
Nice to hear you laughing, You all have had a great day. Australia
i hope you guys are paying that couple really well for there help time and energy
It all comes out in the wash
I know nothing about building a house but one thing I'd suggest is put Eric on the payroll until the end it's worth more then you can pay him i guarantee
You all work so well together! So much getting done in this video is great! Looking forward to the slab pour.
I have watched this video 3 times, GREAT JOB, and many thanks to Eric, Terry and to all who have helped you. I know it must seam to be an endless process, but trust me in the end it will all be worth it. KUDOS!!!!
@ 6:30 using the circ. saw to cut a rounded channel in the foam----slick.
Also known as the Polish plane. Used quite a bit in framing carpentry
Just my thought. Saw it and thought "woah, hadn't thought of that. Nice!".
...And started thinking about how to put it to use. :)
Eric and Terry need their own channel
I gotta say you guys are so inspiring with all the work y'all are doing and how hard y'all are working! Can't wait to get started on my forever house! Y'all have definitely given my family lots to think about.
Ooh, you finally found something the little battery powered skil saws can cut in one charge: foam! Congrats on the amount of work you've done recently. Wow! 4 back-pats sent.
6:27 now that's a man whose done this a time or two
Terry is such a help! It feels like it goes way faster and more ordered as before :D
Love watching y'alls progress. Get a small toy for bugaboo an put the catnip in it. He will play with it forever
You guys need some stationary flood lights for working at night
i wanted to say i enjoy watching your videos thank you for letting us watch them
Amazing amount of work accomplished in only one day.👍🏻
Great work.. the helping hands was a great big help to you ... To watch you both working together has been very nice to see. thanks for letting us all into your life and your journey,,,
I was praying that no one tripped and fell on the re-barb sticking up, and wanted to tell you to put the rubber tops on. Can't!
Thank the Lord for Good People! Hope they have a safe trip home.
I'm excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the great videos, I enjoy watching. FYI, to help determine Radiant layouts, I always lay them out with drawings first before actual installations. They will vary and need some slight adjustments but it's pretty close to the drawing.
I don't care about spoilers. I enjoy watching the process.
If Bugaboo becomes Catnip Dependent, we can start a Go Fund Me to pay for his rehab.
I just want to say, you guys are soooo awesome in you're tenacity! You're an inspiration to anyone hoping to build their own home. Keep pushing forward and you'll complete your goal. Then your second house will be sooo much easier. :) You know you love building... just say it. :)
Re the Catnip: Tell Bugaboo to "Just say no."
I love the daily vlogs and getting to see the daily ins and outs of your house build!!!
Now you have a good crew... One guy who is on top will keep it running smoothly.
I’m sure glad y’all have some help. Seems to be making it much more enjoyable for y’all.
radiant floor heating is very delightful on a cold winter's day... you'll be happy you did it
I like terry. She always laugh.
We need more alyssa n jesse......moreeeee videos please.......im too addicted.....n love bugaboo
That is indeed one gorgeous talkative cat...a Bengal.
Happy to see that this part is almost done.
By tying the radiant lines to the rebar you will not have dead zones, even if technically you do. Because, the rebar itself will conduct the heat throughout the slab.
Good point.
New to this channel , but it's very quickly become my new favourite. Thanks for the great content.
Hi, I'm a concrete worker up here in Canada, and we pour large garages/ basements all the time. Just wondering why you didn't use wire mesh instead of rebar would have saved light years of time, and probably would have been cheaper! Just wondering why, but keep up the good work!!
He probably meant the mesh made of rebar - they are already welded together in large grids, and come in various sizes, like 8x8 feet, in 1 foot spacings.
Well, apparently you didn't... And 10 kgs/m² isn't that bad.
www.concrete-mesh.com/concretemesh/welded-reinforcing-mesh.html
You can get rebar grid in .5" on 12" spacing. It's not lite but, thy make.
Corey Roca another vote for rebar here. Cheap bulletproof in my book.
No I meant actual wire mesh, no pre welded grids. You can get a thick enough wire mesh, and I guarantee it will do the same exact job as the rebar.... Not sure how the winters are where they are building, but I guarantee they probably aren't as bad as they are up here. so with that being said, the concrete will experience very little movement, thus making the wire mesh the perfect solution to prevent cracks. But as some of you are stating how money isn't a big worry, I could see why they went with the more expensive choice. P.s. Been working in the concrete industry for 30 some odd years now, and no matter how many precautions you take, concrete will always eventually crack! Sometimes do to a slightly improper mix, low spots etc. Well love reading all of your guys opinions on the subject, and thanks for reading!!
Great people you have there helping you.
Neat shot from the top of the wall...Nice team work on this day...
To get a greater strength from the smaller zip ties, wrap the tie around the rebar, or whatever work piece, twice before you secure the tie. This will greatly increase the strength of the zip ties.
Love these "Music Scores" !!
Great work, glad you have made friends they have worked their arses off.
Glad to see progress. Can't wait for the pour
Volunteers
Another very productive day. What a beautiful evening as well.
I'm impressed that you resisted the temptation to build an igloo :)
The music is awesome so retro and psychedelic
Best RUclips Channel! Thanks by keeping it daily Alyssa!
You should plant catnip in your garden. I did that and now I have two neighborhood cats coming to see me on a regular basis. They love to roll around it and just chill for awhile 🤣
20:09 "whack" poor girl.. Still laughed 😄
This reminded me that I left my coffee on the counter when I left for work today. Only drank half of it.
Ok the sideways saw in the foam cut was pretty darn cool.
I do the same with a table saw to make cove moulding
#1 Needs to be High density foam
#2 Reverse coil design "look it up" so I did and oh boy! Jesse stated that if it gets to complicated they'll go to something else. Well that's what they did.
You can't change the layout or design of the original layout or you'll get hot and cold spots in your floor system with improper Heating. The outbound and inbound lines needed to be next to each other and alternate across the floor. This was one item you cannot just arbitrarily change. It had to be done according to the specifications
So awesome to see this day, feels like forever doesn't it?
What wonderful help you had!
You guys are doing an awesome job :)
Yep it's only fair, you guys treat yourself with ice cream and now Bugaboo can treat himself with catnip
The return of Bugaboo! ❤️
well done you guys looking forward to the next video paul from uk
Can a floodlight manufacturer please sponsor them with some floodlights, put your name all over them, it's cheap advertising.
They mention them enough, I'm surprised they haven't given them some with 'Home depot' on them, I would, stupid not to.
Snjoy all you guys video. My first negitive comment.Wished you had keep the orange caps on the rebar sticking up.lol.
DANG no wonder they dont read the comments... by the time we post tips... its already a week and 3 days too late. Love your videos :D
Great job. Your videos are very entertaining keep up the great work
Love you two!! Grateful for the inspiration.
Another epic day's work done by all four of you !! Well done guys !! Your 🐈 cat is adorable !! Thanks for sharing
Great job by everyone! GOD bless. JC
Your videos are great thanks
Yes, you did have great help, that is why things is done quickly !!!!!!!
Mr Thiem o
You will do it! Thanks for sharing.
Bugaboo is so cute he seems to really love that little gift just to let you know it's all right to let cats eat in the catnip because it's good for the digestive system it helps give them roughage and they enjoy it also they also do rub in it and it gives them that little kitty cat high so it's quite alright for him to eat it. thanks again so much for sharing with day in your life and your trials and tribulations keep up the great work and I look forward to your next video.
that nicad circular saw was maxxed out cutting foam, cant imagine using it for wood... glad to be part of the li-ion generation
Hire the orange guy!
Mikkel Örstedholm
The orange guy in the White House? Lmao, he's useless anyway.
BugaBoo is always a proper way to finish
Terry is really cute !
got a few sneak peeks at terry and the girls. nice!
Good to have good hands of help around tell your help super nice both of them you to
Thanks for the explanation Alyssa
Maybe the Catnip would work with the work crew? Stimulating treat.
after you finish the home build suggest you open a restaurant which stays open till 11pm
I love the night time videos and the crickets do too!
your video's have made me so grateful I'm planning a 400 SF house on helical piles :)
heaps and bounds. well done.
Bugaboo is probably my favourite part of the video's lol
Big fun to watch things moving!
In Sweden, some people call zip ties "cat stranglers" 🙈☺️
I'm happy to see you guys getting closer to your end goal..
Hello person scrolling down the comments, hope you have a wonderful day!!! Welcome to the internet.... where everybody gets knowledge but never been correct.
Thanks for sharing with us!
Progress at last!
It's not a "Hammer Drill" at 3:56, it's a "Rotary Hammer". A must if you are working around concrete.
Depends which part of the world you like in!!!!!not all poeple live in US you know
Rotary Hammers exist outside of the USA. They were invented in the early 20th century.
so does the word aluminium and color!!!!!!!!! differant names for same products
I'm surprised you guys don't have work lights..
Just be sure not to hit the pex when you drill holes to fasten the toilet. My dad did that once, and had to dig up the entire bathroom floor to fix it. Just imagine having to do that to an entire floor.....
I am sure the took pictures of the plumbing before they covered it
If that slab is going to be heated it needs to have an expansion gap around the edge
They have engineered plans, I am sure the thought about thermal expansion.
Daniel Rose thought about it... and did nothing
It can't have a gap. The design requires the floor be poured directly against the concrete walls to prevent the hillside from pushing the bottom of the wall in. That's why they cut off the bottom of the ICF foam.
Mister510 I understand why they went up to the IFC wall. If they have not allowed for exspansion and contraction of that floor then they have made a design error.
In their case, they should have poured the slab and then put down the insulation, plastic barrier ontop, put down the heating pipes and poured a 2inch screed incorporating the pipes. Around the edge of the screed a 2inch high foam expansion pad to allow for expansion.
