    i once walked into a non-latino (white) adult party with who was my boyfriend at the time and there were about 50 ppl there...and i thought "ok here i go, kissing 50 cheeks" and he just walked past everyone and didn't say hi. i was like WTF SO RUDE! i was stunned. apparently they just go in and say hi when they pass each other in the kitchen or something. i froze. next time im going around and say hi to everyone i don't care. i still feel rude years later.

      My boyfriend can do that at family gatherings. They don't say hello. They just kind of see each of in different rooms and skips the formalities. It still blows my mind. And when we're getting ready to leave? HE DOESN'T SAY BYE TO ANYONE.

    • @lillib.4134
      @lillib.4134 5 лет назад +6

      Yeah, haha, my perspective as being white, saying hello to everyone is not as important or it’s not in the right setting. I have been taught that it is polite to say hello and goodbye. I have had some encounters with my boyfriend’s (who is Mexican) family where I either forgot to holler down the hallway to say hello or because they are having more of a one on one conversation, and to me, I feel like I would have been rude to bump in to say hi. My boyfriend would tell me that I need to say hi to EVERYONE. But hey, I’m getting better and learning. I guess you can say we might have more rules with that and not necessarily trying to be rude but trying to be polite in our own ways. Frankly, there are rude people, so who knows. Hopefully that helps your perspective 😊

    The only rule that I didn’t experience was saying no to food. My parents would nearly beat the shit out of us with their eyes if we denied food or drink offered to us at another person’s house. The way my mom explained it is you never ask, but when offered you say thank you and be grateful because they are giving you a gift basically. But you never ask for food! Also the goth thing is so true! I went through a goth phase but my mom stopped me at black nails because “esas son de mujeres de la calle!” Lol

The double side of the sword for us is that it is also considered offensive (one time my friend's dad reported me to my dad that I refused to eat at their house) when you refuse food at someone's house so you must eat but not like you are starving. Like you could take a drink and say you are full otherwise.

    have been watching your channel and enjoy the topics you speak on.... much respect. I’m an Hispanic man who crossed the boarder at the age of 4 with my mother and grandmother. My mother worked 5 years straight as soon as we crossed and arrived to VA to get our green card, which we were granted. I am proud of who I am and my Hispanic culture. I am fluent in Spanish and English. I became a US citizen at the in 2010 and had the privilege to grow up in a very diverse area in the Northern VA area. I was also fully educated here in VA, I have also educated myself in topics that I was not though in school. I have watched many of your videos and would like if possible and honestly for you to watch the links and videos I have attached. I hope you continue to speak up and also further educate yourself on world history and not not only on the American History that the white man has been teaching. The purpose for all this is not because I’m not trying to cry me a river but to share a bit of the Hispanic culture and history. All lives matter and yes growing up I have experienced a bit of racial slurs and yes some officers profiling but I am not afraid of officers and yes unfortunately racism will continue to exist. I have many close friends that are Black, Hispanics, Whites, Arabs, Asians, etc. We are all humans and no race is better than the other.
    Keep doing the work you do, much respect!
    I listen to what all of you said and I have attached a few things I would like for all and everyone to read and watch.

    My favorite memory growing up Latino was when there a family party and your tio had a non Spanish speaking girlfriend . My mother and titi Maria ( who was the most fun aunt ) would talk polite to her and then talk bad about to the whole family . Like she didn’t eat anything , she didn’t make juniors plate . If you Latino you know your girl has to make you plate at family functions . But in the end it was all love . Then everyone spoke English again once she came to the third family function . Then it was like this must be serious .

    While I understand they may have had good intentions; I feel like Latino parents set us up to be socially awkward and ill-prepared for the world by telling us a lot of this stuff and treating us this way. For example, my boyfriends parents never took him to a restaurant porque "hay comida en la casa", as we all know.. And that made him unable to even be in a restaurant as a young adult without panicking because he didn't know how to order food, or pay, or leave a tip, etc etc..! It was ridiculous! It's things like this..And the whole "Don't ask for things, don't say anything, don't move, don't speak up" thing a lot of people mentioned is pretty toxic. You instill a fear of speaking up into them that they carry into adulthood. Why train your kids to be docile and complacent in a country where people like that get steam-rolled? The world at large doesn't function on that scale and old-school Latino parents just don't understand that.. it's so frustrating. They do what they think is "right" but it can be damaging to their American kids. I got lucky my Latino parents were several generations in and didn't raise me or my siblings this way. I know not everybody has that. At least those of us in the newer generations will (hopefully!!) know better than to treat kids like objects with harsh (gender, racial, class) stereotypes and roles. We can carry the good parts along, but a lot of things need to be 🚫!

      What you wrote about the restaurant is so relatable! Like I was in 9th gr. the first time I had McDonald's and I had to keep it secret from my friends, I was so ashamed. Anyway, the dark side of their parenting mistakes is SO very real and SO difficult to grow out of-- however, this video at least made me laugh and realize my sisters and I weren't the only ones.
