You know what’s worse...when you are Mexican but have a English name and they try and turn it into a Spanish name cause no Mexican can be named Alexandra it has to be Alejandra *I had a white teacher call me Alexandra the first day of school, then the next day proceeds to say Alejandra.. I was pissed!! Basically he thought I was white but once he saw I was Hispanic he switched up* also I know it derives from Greece but for people that speak English it’s (Alex-an-dra)

I'm not Latina, I'm black. But I subscribed to this channel a long time ago, because I love the content. I love the unapologetic pride that is taken in Latino/Hispanic culture, and I am learning some good things from this channel. It's so fun and free lol. This video and the video where Gadiel is speaking about NOT having to speak Spanish around others who don't speak Spanish (he spazzed, G. I loved it!!) are my two favorites. Y'all keep it up.
My name is just boring 'ol Krystal, but I will take pride in it from now on 😊.

Clarissa I don't take offense at all! I actually considered that while typing this out. I'm very aware of Afro-Latinos/Latinas, but I was just giving my own perspective. I live in America, and as far as I know, my family comes directly from Africa to the U.S. (by way of the slave trade). I know in other countries, there is a very deep African presence in cultures where Spanish is spoken and I love it. Where people who look exactly like me, speak Spanish only. I think it's dope and people should know more about it. That's part of why I love this channel and am subscribed 😊.

Queen D it’s totally the same idea though! Through the slave trade many Africans were taken to the Caribbean and South America. It’s just that now that many are now coming to live to the US so there’s an added layer of immigration and language and cultural barriers!

Apparently Americans have to put up with everything that gets thrown at them. By the way, I’m Hispanic and a hell of a lot older than you people and never had any problems growing up in the USA.

Puertoricans have this thing where they LOVE creating new names (and not particularly short names, hence mine JAJAJA). So my mom decided to fuse her name (Denisse) with my dad's name (Carlos) and created Karenise. But my mom was like : "Eh too short, it needs to sound poetic." so they added "del Mar" as my second name. It's still a struggle to even just order food, people always find weirder and harder versions of my name, so I just say "Karen" whenever I go to a restaurant. Sometimes I just get annoyed and tell them to call me by my nickname, Kary. But I love my name, so even if I constantly correct people and some just don't get it, I would never change it. :)

    • @vianjelos

@@vickyc2573 its because thats the how the typical name is pronunced. Its usually (PAH Oh La) but she pronunces it (Pow LAH) unless there is an accent on the second A people wouldnt think to read it that way. Its like shawn when its spelled like sean its easy to pronunce but if you didnt know that it was pronunced that way you wouldnt read it right, youd say Sheen instead.

I’ve always had trouble in school because I’m of Puerto Rican decent and when your Latino a lot of people say it differently when you first say your name to then. With my Latino friends they get it right away as well as Hispanic teachers but my white friends it gets a little difficult. I love this video so much because it really is true. You should embrace your name and take pride when you say. You should never have to adjust or change it for others to get it. If you have to, take them step by step and explain it to them.💕💕💕

My name is Simar, pronounced in Spanish “Si” as in yes and “mar” as in ocean. It’s a combination of my parents’ names which are Simon and Margarita.
Growing up, I was not ashamed of my name but kind of embarrassed that I didn’t fit in with the Jessica’s and the Ashley’s and all the other girls who had common, easy to pronounce names. I remember being jealous of those girls names because whenever I watched a movie or a show they could relate to the characters who had their names and there’s no way I could ever do that. And I can totally relate to Eli saying that when the teacher was role calling in class whenever they would get to my name they would kind of pause and be like “Si-sa-...” and I’m like yeah that’s me 🙄 and that was in El Paso, TX where I grew up, where everyone I went to school with was Mexican like me! So when we moved to a smaller town 5 years ago where it’s about half Latinos, half Caucasians, I struggled waaaay more. I got so tired of correcting people that eventually I started saying my name the “Americanized” way. It even got to the point that when I would go to a restaurant or coffee place like Starbucks where they ask for your name with your order, I would give them one of my friends names that is more common, cuz I wanted to avoid the, “I’m sorry, what was your name?” And me having to repeat it and then spell it.
But recently, I’ve come to the realization that my name is unique to myself. It has a story behind it and I’ve never met anyone who shares my name (not that they don’t exist, I’ve just never met them). I don’t mind if you can’t pronounce it and say it differently, but now when I introduce myself I always say it the right way, instead of changing it to try and make it easy on the other person. I’m proud of my name now. It makes me think of my parents every time I say it and it’s definitely a great conversation starter! 😉

My father gave me the name Ilena with that specific spelling because he was a Cuban refugee who was rescued by a boat that had a nurse on it with that name. She nursed him back to health from these stinging water creatures that had attacked him. I stopped correcting people who said my name wrong because they would be so highly offended, mostly the Latino community but it’s my name and it has meaning so they should respect it.

Anyway, in my case, my nickname "James" came before my full first name was properly thought of so I've always identified myself as being "James" first then "Jaime" second. In the sixth grade when I moved to a new school, I wondered how it'd be like if I got people in school to call me "Jaime" and it wasn't as comfortable to hear in the same way as my nickname.
Whether here in the Philippines or abroad, people have a hard time trying to pronounce "Jaime", going for the English "Jamie" pronounciation instead. I either correct them with the proper way of saying it, or have them just call me by my nickname, or do both, depending on the situation.

If you have an uncommon name (or spelling) for the region, no matter what race or background you come from, if someone puts effort into spelling or pronouncing the name correctly you cant be mad if they ask you to repeat or pronounce it or w.e else. If they dont even try to learn then feel free to be upset because id be annoyed if someone didnt call me my name out of "difficulty". My name is "Reyna". Growing up in the 70's in Illinois was TORTURE. Moving to Latin America in the 80's was a dream. Came back to US in late 80's to Miami - all good. Now, back in Illinois - I am proud of my name. My mother is from Panama and I was named after my grandmother's nickname. My son is named after my grandfather's nickname, "Toño", and I hope that he will take pride in his name. I will add, he has an easier time simply because it is more diverse now and he doesn't have a negative stigma being half Latino. I was told I wasn't able to speak Spanish or they'd kick me out of school. It wasn't until I lived in Latin America did I feel normal and for that reason, I side more with my Latina family than my dad's family which is America. Thank's for your videos -- they are nice break from my dissertation and life in general.

For me it's not that people couldn't pronounce it it's that I've always hated it. My birth name is Carlos and my reason for hating it is because growing up in Miami there where like 100 other Carlos in my class so I just felt like a number but my other reason for hating it is because it's my dad's name and his dad's name and his dad's name. And to me that's just a legacy of laziness naming your kid after yourself because you don't want to actually think of something unique is just lazy to me. Anyways in highschool this girl I liked started to call me Charlie to you know differentiate me from all the Carlos because surprisingly there was no Charlie and at first I wasn't so sure but what the hell I like this girl why not and eventually I decided to keep it. Afterwards I would introduce myself as Charlie but I didn't like the spelling because everyone spells it like that so I settled on Charley. I absolutely hate being called Carlos and even worse Carlitos ughhh.

My name is LEONELA...its a funny story...my mom got it from a Telenovela and there are many people with this name! In school my classmates & professors, doctors/nurses, and even family members have always pronounced it as: LIONELA, LEONILA, LEONEA, LOLENA and LEONA...I tell people to call me "Leo" (given to me by my cousins) which is fine by me if you are not hispanic...!
But seeing this video made me realize I have also allowed people to pronounce it the wrong way...I agree with all of you in that people should put in the effort to pronounce it correctly! Not make it easier for then to pronounce (especially in English)! That ends today...its a SPANISH name & people should learn how to pronounce it correctly!

My first name is María (usually just spelled Maria) and you're supposed to roll the R. People usually pronounce as the normal Ma-ria, the American way. But in the Puerto Rican family it's María with the rolling of the R.
My middle name is Leonor. Which people usually pronounce as Eleanor or Leo-nor. How it's spelled. But in my family it's pronounced with the emphasis on the ON and again, rolling the R.
My full last name is De La Santos Suarez. De La Santos is from biological father's side. Suarez from my Mom. It's simplified as just Santos. And people pronounce it as San-toes. But it's supposed be pronounced as Sun-tos (like dos but with a t sound). And some people don't even attempt to say the Suarez part.
In school (thank God it's senior year) they call me Ma-ria San-toes (Maria Santos). They took out the the "De La" in Santos and just call me that.
But at home and to my family I am María Leonor De La Santos Suarez. And yes, even though it is a long name I love it. It makes me proud of my Half Dominican and Half Puerto Rican roots. And my name has a lot of meaning behind it. Maria was my Mom's Abuela's name (my Great-Abuela) and Leonor is my Abuela's name (I call her Mamabuela- mixture of Mama and Abuela that I came up with at the age of two). Again, I love my name. I love my roots. I love the history. Being Hispanic/Latino/Spanish is amazing, am I right?? 🙌🏽

Relatable as hell. Even though my name is one of the handful of Spanish words everyone knows, it’s never said correctly or the way I prefer it to be said (THOOL-seh, DOOL-seh). It’s always DOOL-say to a majority of people, and it sucks hardcore. It’s really not that hard to take a second out of your day to make people feel seen and feel respected when they’ve been seen as lesser their entire life. I got to a point where I just stopped correcting until 3 years ago when a professor finally took the time to say it right and I felt seen and I felt like I mattered. It’s such a little thing, but it makes such a big impact.

People have always butchered my name but I have never tried to modify my name or create a nickname. I just don't know we should try to "Westernize" our names or be called something that isn't our names for the sake of other people who can't bother to learn a pronunciation

Even so I prefer to go by Kit online because I’m a Christian (religion) and that’s what you call a Christopher or Christian.
But, my name is Grecia and was named after the Argentina actress Grecia Colmenares. People are always pronouncing it Gracia or Graysha but I’ve always loved how it’s pronounced in Spanish;so I correct people constantly bcus neither of those are my name. It’s pronounced Grehsia or Greysia. 😊

With all do respect, I will tell you that LOT'S OF BRAZILIANS don't mingle with South nor Central Americans. You guys are often with the Europeans and Northern Americans. Is it that you feel you're more Europeans because of the language you speak? (PORTUGUESE) I try n visit one different restaurant every other week. Almost all Central and South American restaurants n 2 PORTUGUESE, n 2 SPANIARDS. The only 2 restaurants I found Brazilians, where at a Portuguese n the SPANIARDS restaurants..... And of course, BRAZILIANS.
Why is that????? Have NEVER encounter BRAZILIANS at a Mexican, Peruvian, Dominican, Colombian, Chilean, Honduran, NOT EVEN AN ARGENTINEAN RESTURANT!!!!! And trust me I've been to very good restaurants n very common ones.
So why is it you guys don't feel relax, at ease with us, BUT with Europeans you do????!!🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
By the way.... I'm from CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA!!!

    • @bools7159

@@mirandabisnou1307 Ok so first of all chill out, second of all I don't know any Brasilians who align more with Europeans. Maybe you haven't been to Brasil but it's a pretty big generalization to say that we 'hang out with Europeans' because of Portugal... The thing is that while we are Latinx we aren't always portrayed as so due to us not speaking Spanish. And yes even though Portugal colonized Brasil doesn't mean we still see them as the 'original us' (meaning that we are more European) and therefore are always with Europeans, because I've never heard of that.

Brazilian Portuguese has many words derived from African languages. (Especially west-African languages,
      Banguelo: (toothless person)
      Cafuné: (cuddle in the head)
      Abadá: (carnaval uniform shirt)
      Batuque: (Drum)

I'm not Latina but I'm fluent in Spanish and have spent a lot of time in Latin America and I've also worked in latinx organizations here in the US...whenever I'm speaking in Spanish I always tell people to call me Clara because I prefer the full translation of my name to my name pronounced with an accent. I'm also used to being called Clara because my mom speaks a lot of languages so when I was growing up she would call me Claire, Clara, and Chiara interchangeably. I really like having a translatable name..but my perspective is also different because I've never had to deal with people in my home country being confused by my name, and for me being called Clara while speaking in Spanish is a choice.
