At 2:15 Tam says she was taught that this country is a melting pot. A professor from university actually gave me a better metaphor. This country in more like a mixed salad 🥗 because everything is so different that it’s impossible for us to become homogenized! But it’s okay that there are differences as long as you accept that we won’t all mix together!

I agree with the mixed salad and Wonder Waffer's point. The melting pot is actually a very problematic and dated theory. I refuse to melt away my culture and beliefs in order to be accepted. I am an immigrant and I refuse to let my history get erased due to assimilation. I want me and my culture to be respected, acknowledged, and appreciated not be erased in mainstream society.

Perhaps today, or in the past 25-50 years, but go back to the beginning of the 16th-17th century, it was a disgraceful slaughter.

This reminds me of one of the lectures I had with a group of diverse culture and we were discussing the importance of freedom of speech in regards to learning English in addition to one’s native language. The guys who couldn’t speak English very well were all for the notion that English requirements be made tougher. I was done for the day

Ummm, Ok you forgot about the REAL Native Americans, Adrienne, a.k.a."Indians" who really owned this country, the French (Louisana Purchase history), the Hawaiians & Eskimos. Yes, Mexico & Spain had a very small part of this country but cannot compare to the French and Native Americans of which I can truly say and prove I am a part of.
I mean the french or Spanish weren't exactly invited. they kind of just arrived and set up. they didn't own the land fairly.

Tam! A melting pot references when people come to America and their own unique culture melts away and they become more “American”. Growing up in Canada we are taught that we are a “Mosaic” meaning Canadians from other cultures come together to make one beautiful country, but just like the tiles in a mosaic, we are all individuals who maintain our own culture. Some of the languages that Americans should be speaking are Cherokee, Shoshone, Navajo just to mention some. English was introduced to The United States of North America by the British In other words is not the language we should be speaking. Also for those who are not aware, America is Not only USA ; there’s South, Latin, The Caribbean and The Antilles .... So as you can see, Spanish is an American language, Not English ..... Being able to speak more than one language it’s a blessing. How come I don’t hear these white European harassing any other race like Asian Russian Indians middle eastern only Hispanics. You need to take Pre-colombian history as a class. If you had actual knowledge on the subject you would know that the nation that is now called Mexico, had always been and will always be inhabited by the indigenous people. Mexico is the name which derives from Mexica (Meshika), which is also the name of an Indigenous tribe. Also, go to an actual reservation and speak to the indigenous folks yourself, they will tell you that from the North and South, all tribes are related. Stop listening the the b.s. these "$5 indians" tell you. They spread lies to separate tribes. Also follow Navajo Nation, ask any of their leaders about this subject and they will tell you every piece of history that you need to know.

I do wish there was a different term for us to call ourselves like in Spanish, estadounidense, but yeah, there’s no other way to say it grammatically in English.

And great points ladies...but FYI Tam, the "melting pot" ideology (vs let's say "multiculturalism") isn't necessarily a good for diversity and inclusion.
