      it comes to their personal or "people of color" struggles, yet don't keep the same
      energy when it comes to BLK people and cape for executive or the white agenda

      @Emanuel Carr Yes, I felt the same way. When they talk about blacks they are rolling their eyes or it don’t seem like it’s important to them. They say we are too sensitive about everything. Ohhh, but let them talk about their nationality, they go all the way in. Again, our race never get respect in any way or form. And we still struggle with all of that & more.

      Euro-blood sUpReMaCy is sooooo disorienting. They think everything they uphold should be held above everything/body else even their language, come on! The fact that they want things their way even when differences cannot effect them is bogglingly petty. I think all this started with particular Europeans in power who made it through the black plague and that it led to formation of a hyper-superiority complex that expanded and evolved by "any means necessary".

      If you speak Korean Vietnamese Spanish French Russian Portuguese or any other language that you are native to and you want to live here in the United States and I know that it’s hard to learn a new language because you were used to speaking your own native tongue but it would be helpful if you are going to live here to learn how to speak English so that you can communicate with other people and they can communicate with you and I cannot tell you how many times i’ve had Mexican women come up to me and start speaking Spanish and I don’t speak Spanish at all I know very little and so therefore I always say no Habla Espanol and then of course they walk off and go and find someone who does but if they knew English then I could help whatever it is they’re wanting to ask me but instead they choose not to so I’m sorry but But that man was wrong for coming at her and all she simply was trying to convey was that it would be nice if they spoke English because when you go to the nail salon another example and they’re all Vietnamese and they speak in their own native language to me in my opinion it’s rude because you know that they’re always talking about you in their own native tongue or about whatever it is it conversing about with each other and it’s just simply rude and disrespectful to speak another language in front of somebody else it doesn’t understand what you’re saying

    • @veronicaivanova
      @veronicaivanova 4 года назад +2

      @@bhermoth, it depends on the circumstances really. I feel like the biggest problem within the US is that neither side is willing to make a compromise. If you're at work, you should be speaking the language spoken in the relevant country, so both colleagues and customers can understand you. Speaking a foreign language that not everyone can understand in front of your customers or colleagues shows disrespect and bad manners. I am a foreigner and appreciate the value of integrating within the country I live in. Of course, if you're with your friends and family who speak your language and there's nobody with you who doesn't speak the language, feel free to speak it, but don't isolate people by refusing to speak the language everyone understands. Foreigners need to put an effort as well as the natives in order for both foreigners and natives to live well. Telling me to mind my own business in a public comments' section only shows your narrow-mindness and, therefore, I don't think there is any point in continuing a conversation with you. I hope you broaden your horizons 😉

    I lived abroad for years and I loved laughing at fellow American colleagues who were abroad and refused to learn any Asian languages and complained about them not knowing English in their own countries. The argument was that English is the language of global trade. However, English became that way because it was forced upon people as a product of colonialism..This institutionalization of English has made linguistic judgement somehow justifiable. It is not acceptable AT ALL and I love that more people are understanding how hurtful such judgements are. Knowing English doesn't make you American, it doesn't make you intelligent, and it doesn't make you a good person....think of the myriad of criminals who have all known English. I speak 5 languages and am super proud, cause it helps me connect with more people and lots of different types of Americans...knowing languages other than English has helped me feel more American, not less.

      I mean I would never call someone out especially when they are not talking to me and having a private conversation, but everytime before I live in a new country I learn the fucking language. I think its kinda annoying and embarrassing when you work and study in a country and you cant even speak the language. and I know some of them. for some jobs and master degrees you just have to speak english and dont have to speak the native language at all. They dont even try or take classes to learn the native language and learn the culture and make some native friends. Then why did you move out of your country in the first place? I dont know but i think this is kinda arrogant and annoying does not wake sympathy in me

    • @jaicyjohn
      @jaicyjohn 4 года назад

      I am so sorry if I cam across arrogant or self-righteous in anyway; that was not my intent. What I meant was that lots of people I spent time with, fellow Americans, just didn't feel the need to learn the language and would often complain about the lack of capabilities of the people in that country based on the fact that they hadn't adopted English as a main communication language. I would never call someone out for their weaknesses simply because that isn't kind and is rarely, if ever, productive. With friends and colleagues I would offer to help them learn the language and explain how it provides a great new perspective and with others I would listen and if the comments became offensive I would highlight some positives in the culture as counterpoints to censure. Still, I do think it is arrogant for people to expect everyone to speak English or cater to English speakers because English became a global language due to colonialism.
      In a sense, the countries that weren't colonized by the British and didn't adopt English show a level of historic political strength, not ineptitude. Just saying that people should speak English naturally, regardless of where they are, literally makes fun of the complicated history of how English was forced upon various cultures around the world. We all have views that we express without realizing the scope of offense or value they have to others. However, once we realize that, we should act with more grace; that's all I meant. The more we know the better we can live and work together, regardless of our backgrounds and I believe ultimately that is something everyone would be happy for.

    I’m (white) from Australia, and until maybe three years ago, I never knew this was happening, if I found myself in a situation where someone was telling another that they had to speak English in a multicultural (their) country, I would’ve felt so confused as to what gave them the right to think that way and be so cruel, I also would’ve kept my thought to myself (as I wouldn’t have known what to say, or how to defend my own opinion) and regretted later on not saying anything. I’m glad through RUclips I’ve come across these situations now, because it’s something I’m aware of (and I should be). What I’m saying is, unfortunately it takes situations like this for people who aren’t and would never get ridiculed to be aware, we’re in sensitive without realising it. Hopefully I made sense. I just wish sexism wasn’t such a huge issue, that includes 50% of the population, I mean it’s scary, we’re in 2020 🙁. I could argue that all men are sexist and I hate to admit that 😢

This person even came to my house after school and on my way walking home he was saying “try to speak English tomorrow”. Jamaica is an English speaking country.The official language is English. We just have a dialect or “other language”that we talk. I think it so wild that this person does these things to me and my friends when my friends and I are not talking to or about him. Never once been to another country and had people mistreat me or tell that I should learn their language. I’ve always received nothing but kindness and have found that language transcends words. How much do you really want to communicate with people. I’ve had wonderful experiences communicating with people via gestures and little words here and there. It’s a learning experience. Why do Americans insist that you must speak English, when they hear people speaking other languages? I think it’s the most beautiful thing in the world to hear other languages. I feel like it’s their own insecurities among other things because in many parts of the world they speak multiple languages including English, and yet here in the states we push English only, which is completely ignorant. Some people from the states even go and travel to other countries just so they can say they went to Paris or Tokyo, and yet they don’t even take the time to learn a little about the culture that they’re about to experience, let alone the language. That’s disrespectful as well. Of course, they’re not being harassed about it on a bus. The level of ignorance at this time just feels like for every step forward, we take 10 steps backward. Don’t be ignorant people. Think before you speak, and understand what it is you’re actually saying. Truth be told Americans like to go on about how “this is a free country”; and how “it’s my right”. So, I will play that card now too. It is a free country, and if I feel like speaking a different language, that’s my right. If I feel like inventing my own martian language and speaking that, it is also my right. If hearing another language bothers you that much, then guess what, just simply remove yourself. It’s a simple solution. My intention is never to offend, but I feel that we really do need to be more cognizant and definitely acquire some emotional intelligence. I grew up in a multilingual multicultural home, and I’m very proud of that and that I can speak more than one language; and I do it all the time.

    I can relate!!! People should mind their own business..... When I was fetching our new home keys at our new neighbours that the agent had left....just by simply knocking on the door I/we got verbally attacked by another neighbour across the road.....oooh and the things she said!!! Therefore I'm happy the REAL spoke about this! Thank you!!!

    It’s rude to speak a language around someone who doesn’t know it when you are hanging out together, having dinner together, cause they could be gossiping but this story in this case it was not rude to not speak English because they didn’t know that lady.

    I’m currently in a shelter for battered women and there’s a staff member who constantly tells a Spanish speaking resident to speak English only and tells other residents to not speak ANY Spanish. I didn’t know if it was racist or not because it is a ‘privately funded’ shelter but ultimately, there aren’t any other shelters open at the moment so she couldn’t just move. It’s very degrading though, being told to stop speaking your native language to make someone else comfortable.

    Where I have a problem if you are speaking in English then I walk into your store and you start talking your language while I'm in there. Are you talking about me?

    Crazy that people like her say, "you're in America, speak English!" 🤦‍♀️ But here in America, we're required to take a foreign language in high school and in college.

      That's actually not exactly true. You should really ask before blindly taking classes that aren't required. Most high schools don't require you to take a foreign language. It's highly recommended because most state schools require it but it's not required. And even then, if you look at the requirements for the degree you wish to study, most undergrad programs list whether or not a foreign language is required. And most Ivy League colleges actually require you speak English.

      I would change it into ignorant people. I mean, because you can find ignorant people everywhere.
      The thing that really surprise me is that America is considered a open minded country, I just don't get how contradictory they act. So sad! :/

      I dont think it should be so generalized. Even though the majority are ignorant, there are plenty of people who dont think that way

    I do have one question,whenever you go to a nail salon and they are talking in different language, and looking right at you and your nails aren’t you just a little curious on what they’re saying? And btw not all “white people” are like that woman. 💁🏻‍♀️

    • @PHE-nomenon

      Yes, always curious and sometimes their body language can give you an idea of what's being said. However, if I truly want to know what people are saying in other languages, I'd learn the language.

    I 100% agree with everything they are saying but I have seen situations where there was an interaction between English speakers and non-english speakers (for business) and they just held conversations in their native language with one another, leaving the English speaker out. I was always taught that it was rude when you know the person cannot understand you. It's like whispering. I was always taught that whispering is rude when there is another person present.
