Old Movie Stars Dance to Uptown Funk

- My inspiration came from What's the Mashup? ( • 100 Movies Dance Scene... ) but I didn't manage 100! The idea was to do the same for movies from the Golden Age - meaning no title later than 1953 (although there is one at the end.) Oh, and none of these clips was sped up or slowed down.
Turn on subtitles to find out the film names.
PS. I write books as well. Here's two very reasonably priced ones about movies:

Film Editing is the one art form unique to the cinema. All other constituent parts of the medium derive from something else that came before.
Writing and composing had been around for centuries; production design, special effects, acting and directing all came from the theatre, and sound was a later development following on from the phonograph. Even cinematography had an ancestor in photography.
But editing had no ancestor. It was invented by the cinema and remains the essence of it. And yet now the Academy has decided - in its ever decreasing wisdom - to relegate this award to a highlights reel.
Disgraceful.
Some of us did not watch the awards show which has become an embarrassment; can you clarify what happened with the editing category?

Yesss! Dynamite describes it perfectly. 🤩💃🕺💥🎺
I couldn’t agree more!!!
What was magical about that part, they weren't dancing then.
Mystic Heart - Are you serious? The fact that the editor managed to find the absolute perfect clip where a whole bunch of dancing/marching people just *happens* to stop and stand completely still to match the lyrics IS what makes it magical!
To whoever spent the hours upon hours it must have taken to find these clips, edit them, and then string them all together in a way that makes them feel authentic and natural: THANK YOU

@JohnnieRhodes Yes I totally agree... this is pure genius... can you imagine the patience this took????
@JohnnieRhodes Thank you for responding. Is there any way we can find out who actually made this video? I am thinking that maybe it was a big company that had lots of staff to do the research etc....BUT if it was ONE person, then that is even more compelling to me. Any thoughts on that?
This dance compilation masterpiece is a labour of love..😊!
Thank You ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Every six months or so I have to come back to this one. The editing, in selection, in cutting, and never missing a beat, is just incredible, the general mood is tremendous and it sustains throughout. It's a fun love letter to old Hollywood: musicals, follies, comedies, and everybody's happy and happy about being happy. it's about the perfect length, it can't get old. This video basically justifies the entire existence of RUclips.
I SO AGREE!
I actually do the same thing..
It’s a go to of mine 🤩✨👌
The Fact that most of these clips were from almost 100 years ago, just shows you that talent and skill have no boundaries...regardless hat century or era you were from. Amadeus is a perfect example of that

I'm pretty sure Frank Sinatra said "too hot" too.
And Judy Garland said “Hallelujah”
Time stamp?
It’s crazy the skill sets actors had to have back then. “Sure you can read lines, but can you dance, sing, sword fight and ride a horse?”. There’s a few shots in there of James Cagney, a guy known mostly for his heavy, serious gangster roles.. but even he had to tap dance at a professional level.
he originally was a dancer in chorus. i guess we all have to start elsewhere. he was a great entertainer.
Very true but the studios had very shrewd executives and producers who TOOK CHANCES and developed people that they knew had "something" special. Debbie Reynolds was not a dancer, was scared when they assigned her Singin In The Rain and look at her in it. Fantastic. They trained her and spent months rehearsing and you see the result.. Most (not all) producers/gatekeepers now are just money people--they're not interested in DEVELOPING talent, just exploiting it.
Lol exactly
Most couple play a musical instrument as well, usually the piano.
If you wanted to work for MGM you had to
I don't know how many times I have watched this, but every time it makes me happy. The public sphere today is filled with anger and hatred. It is a treat to see a piece that invites us to celebrate wonderful talent.
me me me too!
Sometimes anger is appropriate. But we must never lose our sense of joy.
Today?
Always
It's amazing how Hollywood has changed. Once upon a time you not only had to be either beautiful or handsome but have talent as well. Most of the big stars of the 30s, 40s and 50s could sing, dance and play an instrument along with outstanding acting chops. How many in Hollywood today can do much more than act? Or maybe the movies these days don't allow them to showcase all of their talents. One of the reasons I like old movies so much.
Life was simpler back then.
A good number of todays actors are musicians as well. Dancing on the other hand is dead.
Times change. Nothing is static.

A reminder that Cagney was a great dancer as well as actor.
They are better dancers than anything now!
Fun fact, when Jimmy Cagney started tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy, it was improvised. He was just supposed to walk down, but he decided spur of the moment that Cohan (his character) would have danced. Director Michael Curtiz agreed and left it in.

Tbh this should have been the music video for the song. Also I almost died when those dudes jumped off the balcony near the end and landed in splits. Owwww.
Ananias, James and Warren Berry.
See the whole routine at ruclips.net/video/fBP1C_kcvok/видео.html
The whole contiuous take starts almost 30 seconds before this with them doing the splits, twirling canes and running up the stairs, before leaping from the balcony.
So many things could have gone wrong to spoil the take (including throwing their canes from out of shot for them to catch at the end). God knows how many times they had to reshoot. The one on the left (Ananias, I think) looks like he's about to lose his hat on landing, isn't quite in position to receive the cane cleanly, and trips on the step (!) on the way off stage at the end. (I'm still not sure whether the trip was scripted, adlibbed or a goof.)
They were not credited for the movie, Panama Hattie. Ananias died less than 10 years later.

@@blam9360 I have also seen it attributed to Astsire, it makes sense that he might have said it. I have also seen it attributed to someone called Anne Richards, also to a "Frank and Ernest" comic from the 80s. I'm going with Fred Astaire

Job well done
I loved all of these old movies. Pairing them with current music is ingenious. I love the editing. Someone deserves an award and loud applause for this work.
Proof that dancing and music are universal and timeless!
To the person or persons who created this video: I don't know how many RUclips videos I've watched, but all I can say is...You Won.
Incredible!!!!

Academy award for best editing.
I had thought this was going to be a somewhat lackluster video, with people dancing off-key to the lyrics. But you managed to prove me SO WRONG! It was amazing to see the practically-seamless transitions from different movies, each of them with such vibrant and energetic dancers, who if you forget the years the movies were made, you could swear they were just moving with the song.
Beyond excellent video, never been so glad to be proven wrong.
*Black-White-Male Female - Young- Old - EVERYONE....FANTASTIC!!! KUDOS!*
WOW!! The timing was spot-on with every move. Great stuff!
It's been suggested that some clips were sped up or slowed to match, but not so's I have been able to notice.
Lynn Lobliner Hi. I can't notice it either, but even it that were the case, it would not matter, it is just so entertaining and satisfying.
Just imagine how many movies one had to go through to make this - and how many hours. But I am sure it was a lot of fun!
Not all of them are spot on. Some are a second early or late...
Edit: I was looking for if anyone else noticed that it was off too...
This video should be shown on the Academy Awards show and deserves an Oscar itself! Congratualations!
Agreed!❤️
I so agree. Amazing
I thought the exact thing 10 min ago! Masterful synching and editing and film quality!
I agree!!!! Not only is it so well put together but it can show the younger generation how talented people were in the past and how even though times have changed, we are still the same. This is awesome.
yep
Mad props to whomever compiled all of these clips. Seeing my boys Laurel and Hardy really put a smile on my face. This video is absolute genius 👍👍
