Kathleen, this is one of those moments in pop culture history when everything comes together just right - and I'm still enjoying it!
I remember this from it’s first airing 4/22/1978. Still just as funny. God’s blessings 🤣🤣🤣
This was A CLASSIC PERFORMANCE!
when life was relaxed
@@johnmaki3046 And Steve Martin is a classicist.
This skit became so huge, a record of this song hit the top 40. Can't remember how high it got, but I do know it was in the top ten on the charts. When it came on the radio, you could count on at least one person trying to dance like Steve Martin did. The laugh kept coming for months after the skit came out. I am old enough to admit watching the first airing and my sibling and I were on the floor crying tears and trying to catch a breath while watching it.
I looked it up on Wikipedia and apparently it hit #17, not bad!
Steve had already recorded the song and asked to do it while he was hosting SNL. "In the book Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live, authors Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad write that the sketch was one of the most expensive productions the show had attempted up to that point. Martin had brought the song to the show and asked if he could perform it, not expecting the production that occurred-producer Lorne Michaels put everything behind it."
Looks like it hit #17 on Billboard's Hot 100
I had the single. Played it over and over again.

Blue Lou!
Lou Marini amazing sax player can't decide which I loved better this or the Blues Brothers either way amazing
Blue Lou is the best ❤
I just performed with Blue Lou and Tom Bones Malone. Lou was told the story about this. He said he had to wear the makeup for hours and it was very uncomfortable, also he was surprised that they closed the sarcophagus on him because that was not the way they did it in rehearsal. Bones Malone is also in this. (Top right corner)
The costumes are actually really pretty for being a satire piece
What a great comment! I was so understandably distracted by Steve Martin’s antics that I wouldn’t have noticed that.
Thanks to your comment, I really looked at them and agree with you.
SNL always went all out.
Good costumes, plus the dance moves that mimic Egyptian art, very well done! Someone studied the ancient artworks.
Hey it was 1977 first gen
I thought the two women dancers were really good, they weren't regular cast members and probably didn't have much time to work out their routine.
We learned about King Tut in 6th grade, and my teacher promised us that if we listened well and did well on our test, she would dress up and perform this for us. We did not let her down, and she surely dressed up, played this in the background and PERFORMED. I’m 26 now and this is one of my favorite memories!
Wow! Let's hear it for teachers!
That's what you call education right there.
using this song instead of a real lesson is a cop-out
@@tommurphy4307 She never said this replaced the real lesson. They had the real lesson, and the test, and this was their reward afterwards for doing well. They had already learned about king Tut when the teacher did this.

Don't forget, "How'd 'Ju get so Funky?" "Did'Ju do the monkey??"
Steve Martin was and always will be a comedic GENIUS.
“I’d like to talk seriously just for a moment” while wearing that outfit. Classic Steve Martin style
He's so so talented in so many ways.
It's all about time-ing
"He gave his life for tourism." Pretty much encapsulates how nutty popular King Tut was at the time. T-shirts and people driving hundreds of miles to see the exhibit.
How much is the poster worth?
Ramses 2 was popular in the 90's also
I was there. It was a sensation at the time.
The exhibit was gorgeous and breathtaking. It was a privilege to see it! The artwork and craftsmanship....and Tut was a fairly insignificant "king".
@@valerieniosi935 Me too! I saw the 1976/1977 exhibition in DC, as a high school senior. I am forever grateful to our teachers for taking us on a road trip to see it. We saw the gold death mask, which no longer takes "road trips" anymore. Such a privilege. I still have the exhibition catalogue, which I wisely purchased with my allowance money.
My son performed this in 2nd or 3rd grade grammar school for a talent show. It was so funny. He had a toy stand up microphone, and he ended up copying Stephen Tyler by putting it through his legs, which was over the top funny, but the rest of the performance was his cover of Steve Martin's hysterical song. I'll never forget it. He was the hit of the show. He had two friends dress up and they were the chorus. The song and Steve Martin are national treasures.
I was 23 years old then! I am 67 yrs. now, and my ribs still HURT from laughing!
This is the 100th anniversary of the discovery of King Tut's tomb, SNL should invite Steve Martin to perform this live again to commemorate this.
That would be awesome 👏
That would INCREDIBLE! 👑

Steve Martin has looked the same his entire life.
I've read that Steve Martin has vitiligo (loss of pigment); when it occurs on the scalp, the hair grows through white. My long black hair started coming in in large white streaks at only 16 (in the '60s). I didn't know anyone else with this autoimmune condition then, and as I watched, with glee, this wild and crrrazy guy live on SNL, I felt a little kinship.
Did anyone happen to see Steve Martin and Martin Short on Bill Maher recently? I wish that talented pair would teach a comedy tutorial to today's comedians. They're just so innately funny, quick-witted, creative, original, and sharp while remaining kind and lovely. Comedians who can be funny without meanness or getting down in the gutter are rare.
These two are multi-layered; look at Steve - comedian, musician, author, screen writer, actor and the accumulator of one of the greatest art collections. And just as he is with all of his artistic endeavours, it had nothing to do with snobbery - he just started collecting paintings that he loved, from his early days of being able to afford it, and it grew into a collection of treasures.

I also know the mixed emotions that come flooding in when you encounter something that brings the pain and reminds you just how much you miss them, yet at the same time the joy in cherishing the memory and the good times you had together. Healing from the trauma of the loss never seems in reach, because living without them is far too painful, yet there is just no choice in the matter but to live. A classic. After 45 years, it still plays well. Timeless. Like King Rootin Tootin, or whatever his name was...⚠⚠
