- This video explains a keyboard replacement on Macbook Pro Retina 15" Model A1389, it is the same for all retina models that came out untill today, and does not require replacing the whole palm rest of the computer. It is not easy, but its doable. Dont get fooled by other repair companies or certified shops trying to charge you an arm and a leg for this.
This video shows a full, step by step screen replacement on a Macbook Air 11" a1370 a1465 models. This will work for any of them sold from 2010 until today.

Just wanted to say great step by step. Just have to pause to get the steps done. I'm pretty good with my hands and very patient. The Keyboard tearing was not the fun part, it was the scary part. Shits flying everywhere and the wife was like what are you doing to my computer!!!!! AAAAAAA. Well she was the one that decided to clean it with windex. Just sprayed it on there like it was a toaster.People out there, Take your time and plan to sit for about 3 to 4 hours. Pause and go back if you have to. This video worked for me.
how does your keyboard feel now? like factory?
Thanks for making a detailed video and warning people about the small connectors!

Thank you! This comment is done with my working again A1398 late 2013 15 inch Macbook Pro (retina). I partially broke a little connector reassembling, so I second the caution on how delicate those are. It still made contact, just didn't lock the cable well, so I used some electrical table to anchor the cable. I also changed the back light while I had it apart although you could get by reusing the old one. I bought a keyboard from eBay that should have worked according to the listing and the picture in the listing, but it was a misfit and the keyboard cable was all wrong. I got credit and bought the second try from iFixit which was perfect. Without this video as a guide, not sure I would have attempted this, so thank you!
Milan you the man. This is the only guide on youtube that properly explains it. I was stuck at the keyboard removal step. Followed your guide which shows to pull it from the top left corner.
I just replaced my keyboard with this video. Forgot to screw in a screw somewhere in the motherboard, but it still works. Thank you! Those who are trying to replace their own keyboard, make sure to be careful about pulling out different wires. You also will need to look at more detailed instructions on how to safely pull out each of the different wires, so that you don't break any of them.
I used this video to do this. It took forever. Like 5 hours, but a lot of that was missed steps, and having to go back step by step a few more times that I would like to admit. However I have now tested most parts of the laptop and it all works fine! I'm so happy it's done!!
Some feedback on the video though. You went very fast. There are so so many steps, and it would have been good to break those down, Step 35 - Remove all screws holding the motherboard. (Then pointing them out.) Anyway, basically, I had to pause and rewind and fast forward to make this work. I'm still so so glad you posted this otherwise I would not have been able to replace my keyboard. I replace the battery before this.... that was so much easier than this!! You pretty much have to tear down the entire laptop to get to the keyboard and rebuild it!
Success! Thanks for the instructions. I used iFixit instructions on removing the top case, but stopping after they remove the logic board (they have great detailed instructions with photos for each screw and cable), and then watched this video to figure out the keyboard details. iFixit says it can't be done but they are wrong! Removing those rivets was the hardest part. I used a Dremel to cut a small slot in a flathead screwdriver and then used a small rubber mallet to knock the rivets out that were left after pulling the keyboard. Got all 100+ screws in. That part alone took over an hour. Patience...
There was several minutes were I thought I had killed my laptop because when I started it back up the display was blank. Upon further inspection (with a magnifying glass) one of the pins on the data display cable had been bent. Luckily not broken. I carefully bent it back in place and everything is working! Saved myself at least $700 if I wanted new parts and for someone else to do it. Total cost for new keyboard and new blacklight: $30.
glad it was helpful
Awesome! Had a few issues with the rivets. I read on another forum another way to remove them if they don't pop off as in your video. Basically, get a small, thin flat ended screwdriver and tap them off with a hammer at 45 Degrees.
It certainly wasn't perfect, but the nail clippers failed to work on mine. Hitting them off leaves a small skin of metal that can be poked through. The screws wouldn't go 'home' all the way but the end result was good enough - I got 103 out of the 105 in :)
Thanks for the video Milan! Saved my old retina from the trash :)
Glad it helped out. When rivets don't come out I use precision bolt cutters. Small ones. Grab the river, twist left-right and pull up without squeezing all the way but only enough to hold the river. Most will come out
Thanks for this. Great step by step. Really helped me get a job done today.
Just successfully went through this repair. Not easy but I'm an amateur at this stuff and I could do it. I have the mid 2015 model, which is a little different. I used iFixit's Upper Case Assembly guide for my exact model for the taking apart / putting it back together.
One difficulty I came across was that I couldn't lift that little frame around the battery as high as you see in this video, it was stuck with some stickers that went underneath the battery. Had to push the little logic board on top out of the way sometimes with an uncomfortable amount of force. In the end I just left it and managed to get the 2 screws he mentioned out with the little space I had (so without taking the batteries out).
Another one were the rivets everyone is talking about. I guess it depends on the model as well but mine with the exception of a few all stayed stuck in there. Different tongs didn't work, tried the nail clipper but it was too sharp and just broke the rivets off for me. In the end I used the hammer and a small screwdriver I read about here in the comments, put the laptop on it's side, and once I finally got one out I kinda got the hang of it. But they didn't come off easy. I saw someone talking about a 45 degree angle for the screwdriver. For me getting it as flat as possible agains the frame worked best (so like a
Thanks for the insight into your experience with this repair. Im planning to attempt this next week but will also be replacing the trackpad. I have the same MBP model as you so your tips are definately something i will bare in mind when going through the process. I have a theory of using a pair of side cutters to grip and pry the rivets out as taking a hammer to the chassis seems a little barbaric haha, but im more concerned with making sure i keep the correct screws together when taking ou the logic board!. Ill let you know my progress if you are interested
Thanks
@@danforestiero5112 Did you end up attempting the replacement? I am very curious.
Also very nervous about screws...
@@AliveNw3LL Hi, yes i completed the keyboard swap with little issues. when 'peeling' off the old keyboard i did have quite a few rivets left in the chassis but they were easily removed with a pair of side cutters. (i think about 4 were unable to be rThe keyboard works flawlessly and feels rock solid. You will need a lot of patience with this though, set aside at least 3 hours and on a nice large clear desk if you can.
There is a great guide on ifixit.com which helps you through the disassemably and is very helpful to keep track of all of the screws (do not put a long screw in a short hole! you will bust your board and will be very expensive to repair lol)
I also changed my trackpad at the same time so i had to remove the battery which involved removing the glue holding it in place - this was much harder than the trackpad as it was so tedious and one aggressive slip of the hands could burst the battery.
If you are just changing the keyboard i would not bother with the battery if you are not confident, i would suggest covering the battery with paper or a cloth to prevent bits of plastic / debris from getting inbetween the battery cells when peeling the old keyboard out. Cheers
Just did it on my Macbook Pro mi-2105, its a bit different so I had to adapt / improvise at some steps but my new Keyboard is working perfectly, for thoses who have problem with the keyboard screws I recommend to use the screwdriver with both hands (one finger on the top, other hand for rotate) also be carreful when you remove the original keyboard, I did it a bit fast and I almost killed the backlight.
Thank you very much Milan for your vidéo.
Thank you for this; between using your video and the ifixit guide, fixing the keyboard on my mid-2014 MBP went well!
Thank you for the video. Just replaced the keyboard on my 2015 MacBook Pro. E key was also no working. Everything is good now.
Great tutorial. I did it step by step and now I am using my new keyboard. Of course it was complicated since I am no expert, but following the video was really really helpful. The only issue was with the rivets, none of them came off the first time so I followed the advice comentad here and used a flat screwdriver and a hammmer. I recommend a very sharp flat screwdriver and to hit the rivets in a 30 degrees angle, at least that is how it worked best for me.
Do you have many screw holes after removing the keyboard? Mine only few holes, mostly protruding metal still without place to put the keyboard screw. any advice?
Milan, Thank you ssoooooo much! You made my little girl very very happy. My daughter spilled water on her mac a couple of months ago. Apple wanted ~$700 for a new top case. A little intimidating at first, but you helped me every step of the way. Cheers!
👍🏻
does the led light work on your new keyboard?someone told me it will not work if I don't replace the whole top case
used it today for replacing the keyboard on a 2013 MacBook Pro - thanks for the video!
Great tutorial, i did it successfully. I recommend to do it way more carefully than in the video. Be carfull whit the screen when you rip off and screw the keyboard, I wouldn't do this whit the screen down.
Based on this video I purchased this exact model of Macbook Pro with a known faulty keyboard. I had to remove the logic board twice as I found a lose keyboard screw underneath the back light. Other than that it was a fairly simple process to install the new keyboard. A little tedious with 100 screws though. 😁 Thank you for making this video.
wonderful video. It helped me to repair Touchpad of my mac pro. I greatfully like your video. that's so useful. thank you so much.
The only thing I would recommend is at teh very start, list all the parts or tools you might need, especially the keyboard screws.
Milan your instructions and technique are great. Thanks.

Do you have a video on replacing the battery?

I would not take anything to such service provider. Trashing the machine and if something brakes, the answer would be 'it was already like this'/
Thank you so much.
Video very good.
Well explained. You saved me labor and tested good. The only draw is that the Z button still does not work after replacing new keyboard. Any suggestions?
Milan, this video was fantastic! Thanks for sharing it. I’ve one question. There’s a small, blue sticker on the end of my keyboard connector terminus: at the end of the ribbon that inserts into the logic board of my MBP Retina, 15”, mid-2015 model laptop. Are we supposed to remove that sticker to install the keyboard connector into the logic board connector? Or do we leave the sticker in place? And what happens if you remove the sticker when you connect the two? Thank you!
Thank you very much! You saved my laptop and I am very happy!! My keyboard is working great BUT…the caps lock button won’t light up and the replacement backlight does not work
Good video. I had two issues:
Not one single rivet came out with the keyboard ;-( and one of the wifi antenna cables (no.1) came out of the plug ☹((
For others I found a really good way to gently ease the rivets out. I used a small pair of flat ended electrical clippers. They must be sharp. Grip (firm but don’t cut the rivet off) what is protruding of the rivet and gently rock the rounded edge of the cutters on the case. All except five came out very, very easily,,,, but those five were the ones I tried to get out first with normal side cutters. Waiting for dremel drill press to drill those out (1/32 or 0.8mm drill).
The wifi plug is an issue. It’s so small. I’ll try to refit it. If no dice then I’ll just get a usb dongle (not removing perfectly good screen to change the cable).
If anyone knows how to fit the wifi coax plug back on please, please let me know. Or where I can buy a plug on a length of the coax cable (for splicing to existing).
Whats the name of the screws used to replace the new keyboard?
thanks for video, in my case almost all rivets stayed in, now i need to figure out how to cut them off or pull them out
Not sure if this is the best way. I tried a pliers which worked minimally well, but then I used a putty knife with a tapered blade. The pointy end to the base of the rivet, pushed in tight and lifted. They all came off (I had about 50 that didn't pull off)
Excellent video
Rob James Thanks
THANKS for showing me how (I also replaced battery and tightened the display hinges at the same time) One word of CAUTION to anyone attempting this...the keyboard edges can be SHARP. My total time from start to finish - 6 hours. Wow, those screws are SMALL!
May I ask You a question about replacement? I have changed layout from uk for german one. apple hardware test showing all is good, keyboard and backlit working fine, but el captain which I had installed got kernel panic and both usb stopped working saying that something is using too much power, after upgrading to high sierra there was no kernel panic but i had no usb and crash on sleep/wake , and downgrading to yosemite make main motherboard usb working second usb is dead even tho cdmi and sd card are working. Do I have to change some information in firmware or something changing keyboards for different country?
I think I damaged the camera cable :( . Keyboard replacement was hard but did it at the end of he day. Do you know if I can replace the camera cable?
Should we try hard to find a genuine keyboard or are the cheap new keyboards parts on ebay ok to use? I noticed on my ebay one the keys are not as bright white as the original. I suppose I could replace all the keycaps but I doubt the switches are the same.
Are the keyboards you get on aliexpress and ebay as good as the original?
Thanks to your video I replaced the keyboard in my 2013 MBP 15”. Everything went well except 13 keys aren't working.
The failed keys are grouped together, forming loose groups. Perhaps that indicates where I went wrong. The ribbon cable connector maybe.
Any ideas?
13 non-working keys: F4(/Apps), 4, 6, +, R, Y, F, H, V, N, ?, Space Bar.
i don't see holes for screw as by ripping of the old keyboard part as staying in the frame. What to do about that?
Why did they have those rivets in there, and then have to break them all off? Doesn't this prevent you from properly securing the keyboard on the laptop for the future?
Where are you located? I'd like to get my laptop keyboard replaced but not sure if you're in the U.S. or not?
HVALA !!!!!
what is the size number of the screws for the keyboard
Hey do you know if its possible to change the Keyboard to a german layout? All keyboards i found have different key as the us layout.
What are the type of screws that I need to buy to put with the new keyboard?
What is the size of the screws which secure the keyboard? And where is possible ty buy theme?
here one told me I have to buy keyboard with its palmrest because if I replace only the keyboard the led light will not work, is it true? I sprayed some cleaning spray on it and some keys doesn't work and I wanted to replace only keyboard because it's cheaper
Tell me please. MacBook 15 2015 keys do not work (RTYUIO) and E does not work well, are there any repair options without replacing them with a new keyboard?
Thank you in advance!
I understood that the chassis keyboard holes are not threaded. Which screws should be used?
....like it
In your opinion is it easier to just replace the whole top case? Just wondering if it saves time/effort in the whole keyboard screws/bolts area which seems to be the trickiest part for people - thanks!
Copious J Much easier, if you want to spend 10 times the cost of the keyboard itself. Case usually comes with the battery and than the trackpad as well since it's sealed under it. Many will say that battery can't be removed, and it's easy to damage yours if you do, and Apple Store will tell you that it is most definitely impossible to remove the battery if you take it there. Replacing the keyboard is a pain but saves money if done properly.
Him: don’t forget to do this or else it will be bad.
Me following along: fuck... lol
Hi, I just ripped the keyboard out, but only the head of the bolts broke when I ripped the keyboard out. So, I basically have no holes in which putting the screws, as they are filled with the bolt. Any advice?
Hi there, I have followed your instructions up to the point of removing the old keyboard. The problem I have is that when i removed the keyboard, almost all of the tiny bolts snapped the heads off an left the shaft of the bolt in the ohole. So I can't screw in the new keyboard screws. Have you come across this before and how might I remove the old bolt shafts?
Thanks!
Jason Pleaner Those are easily removable with small sharp cutters. Gently squeeze the shaft, twist a bit, and pull up. Almost all will come out. I have to do it on more than half the keyboard replacements
For a 13" 2013 late retina, do we have to remove the battery or is it the same procedure you showed here ?
Ismaël Joffroy Chandoutis If it's a 13", than yes, you have to.
where did you get all the parts from?
Hi, can you tell me what size tiny screws do you have to get to install the replacement keyboard?

Any ideas where to purchase the keyboard ?
My 'w' button on my keyboard is not working/responding and I have to copy and paste every time I type in the letter 'w'. It may be from water damage earlier but every key in the keyboard is functioning except for 'w', will this help fix the button response?
I really don't want to go to apple and they replace the entire case for $700 (ridiculously expensive) Has anyone had damaged/ unresponsive button before and this tutorial helped fix that? (my mac is the macbookpro retina 15 inch , late 2013)
just use old pind push it back because when you use screws maybe it'll effect cosmetically such as swelling
It will not affect anything cosmetically. I have replaced 100s and pull the rivets out with precision, small, wire cutters. Very easy and very effective
Where are you located
Where should I order the replacement keyboard? Is there a list of what tools I'm going to need for this replacement?
Christina Punla eBay or Amazon for both tools and kb. I don't have a list
What screws do i have to buy for the new keyboard?
Wish the angle was on the opposite side, so many operations are hidden by the hands :(
At 8:35, you could have broken the screen if a screw/rivet fell between the screen and top case and you slammed the thing closed. Fair warning from observation
Like the video, one question, after I took out the Keyboard, the place where you say the bolts will come off and leave holes for the screws, did not come off. I have a series of ...posts, that the keyboard seems to fit well onto, but only one of them actually popped off revealing a hole for a screw. Ideas for removing those tiny studs?
A pair of small sharp cutters the size of nail scissors. Grab the river with the tip, don't squeeze to much, just enough to hold it, twist left-right and pull up. They will come out. It's a pain in the but but they will. If you cut it move on to the next one. The one you cut you won't be able to take out
+Milan Stojic Great advice, I used a nail clipper and got several of them out. Enough that the keyboard is fairly secure. Thanks!!
Now I have a different problem, Have you ever had restarts hang after doing this? It went fairly easy parts out, parts in (keyboard and backlight). I hit the power key and hear the chime (I assume then the keyboard is at least partially working). The screen glows but never does anything. However, when I connect an external screen, I see the apple for the startup and then it just shows the loading progress bar and stays that way forever. I have already disassembled and reassembled and checked all of the connections with the same result. Any ideas? I know it is a flyer for you to guess, but, I am at a loss.
+Tal McMahon my only guess would be that you have damaged the screen circuit or the screen cable itself. Also there is a chance of damaging the screen if you plug the cable in while it's on or under battery voltage. Can't think of anything else and even this is not the answer. I would have to see it to figure it out
Same here, an € 1,89 straight nailcutter did the job, even on the ones i cut with my bolt cutters! thanks for the tip.
Hello. I have replaced the keyboard after a water spill and the motherboard has not water damage. The trackpad board has a little corrosion. My problem is that I have the same problem with the new keyboard, only the power on button works. Can you give me any advice? Maybe I have received a faulty keyboard? Thank you!!!
Quite possible. You can always text the keyboard by just plugging it in the connector and trying it out while the laptop is open. A little tricky to maneuver but doable.
I did it, thank you for the video. Everything seems to work fine, except that, when I click on the battery icon it tells me "service the battery". The battery seems to charge/discharge normally. I suspect the software dosen't undestand something related to the fact that power were disconnected for a while.
nope, software is telling you that you need a new battery, which you most likely need. there are software tests checking on it all the time, and this msg coming up is most definitely a coincidence happening at the same time of repair.
Milan Stojic thanks Milan, it makes sense, although the battery seems fine despite the message (lasts less than it used to 4 years ago, when I bought it, but still about 3hrs), so I hope it will remain fine at least for a while more.
you can keep running off of it if its going bad still. no worries. if it starts swelling though, you will have to replace it. i`ve seen many bad batteries still run for a while. usual lifespan is about 3 years, but there are a lot of things that determine the life of the battery itself.
Milan Stojic thanks again.
hi i followed this tuturial and I successfulled replaced the keyboard. However the keyboard backlight is very dim? I took a key off and noticed the hinges are not the same as my old keyboard, would that cause an issue if the backlight is obstructed? Or did they supply me the wrong keyboard?
Sean Gregory No. backlight and keyboard are 2 separate parts. If you spilled something on the keyboard this would go through to the backlight and most likely cause the issue. Also there is a brightness adjustment on the F keys. Did you try to increase it. When ever you replace a keyboard with backlight you should replace the backlight as well if there was any trace of anything on it.
Its a brand new keyboard and brand new backlights noticed only the F keys were slightly illuminated whereas the rest of the keyboard is unacceptably dim. I even tried installing my old backlight with same results so Ive narrowed it down to 2 reasons. Either I need to glue the backlight down to stop light bleeding or the keyboard isnt good /not secured down enough.
No have backlight?
8:00-9:00 how did you....
Removed my keyboard, but only about 15 out of 100 rivets flew out, the rest just broke off their caps. Now searching for nippers.
And yes, still using 2012 macbook. If I succeed with keyboard replacement - will use for another year or two.
Update: looks like in old macbooks rivets fused too much into the case. So far I wasn't able to remove even a single of remaining rivets. Tried flat screwdriver with hammer, precision pliers - nothing. Maybe if I try larger hammer...
I bought a bag of 100 little screws for the keyboard, but I can't seem to get them to go in. When you're putting them in it doesn't look like you're struggling at all as if they're already threaded. On my A1398 I just have a bunch of little plastic knobs sticking through the holes in the keyboard. The screws don't have anything to go into. Did I do something wrong?
No. You just have to take those little rivets out. Get a pair of small bolt or wire cutters. Gently squeeze the rivet from the side, twist, and pull up. They will come out easily

Mateen S If you had someone fix it than take it back if you think something is wrong. It can be a number of things. I don't take the battery out on 15" models as u can see in the vid but many techs do and this can affect ur trackpad. Either it was damaged, or the cable is damaged, or the cable is not slid in correctly or maybe the trackpad click screw needs to be adjusted. No idea.
Thanks man! Quick reply, I appreciate it.
Mateen S 👍🏻
Everything fine until ripping the old keyboard out. Almost none of the rivets came out. It seems to be screwed I guess, but the part left outside it's very small and hard to hold it and unscrew, besides the aluminium shreds off in thus way. How the hell shall I proceed now ?
hi... great video! i was wondering... where can i find/buy those keyboard screws?
eBay has them. Buy black ones
+Milan Stojic tnx! :)
Is there any future side effects by doing this? I asked the iCare guys and they said that they have to remove the top assembly.
no idea who iCare guys are, but if they are fixing computers, and dont know how those computers are put together, i am not interested to find out. this means incompetent techs. replacing the keyboard is much harder than just replacing the palmrest (when they say removing the top assembly, than they will want to sell you the battery and trackpad as well, as battery is glued with double sided tape to the case, and trackpad is under it) all in all, this is to make more money. a brand new palmrest with BT and TP costs maybe $150-$200, and they ask what? $450-$600? but also most of the techs call themselves techs by knowing how to replace a hard drive alone...no side effects if you do the job properly, but than again if you are not a tech savy DIY-er, there will be a lot of side effects as you will most likely not do the job properly, end up messing something up, and ending up spending more money than what ever iCare guys quoted you. I`ve had many people watch my vids for guidance thinking that this is easy breezy, ending up spending triple to buy parts that the broke that weren't broken to begin with.
Milan Stojic iCare guys are apple authorised service centres
exactly, incompetent techs...they also have to charge, and do things, apple way. go to a smaller shop that specializes in these repairs (but make sure you find a shop that knows what they are doing, like for example Rossmann Group in NYC, this is where i worked at, and filmed this before i moved to bigger things), they will charge you way less. I do these repairs still, and take mail-ins if you want to fix it. also if someone from these "authorised" repair centers tells you that this voids your warranty, they are lying (if you even have warranty), because they cant even tell that it was replaced, and there is that law that prevents the factory from denying the warranty to a 3rd party repaired device, if they cant prove that this directly damaged the device...
It's not a matter about intelligence, it's about how the official repair happens vs. what you're doing which is NOT the Apple-recommended repair for this problem.
Apple and authorized dealers replace the "top case" which is the metal area around the keyboard and it includes the keyboard. They then have to transfer pretty much all other components (trackpad, logic board, speakers, display, etc)
I wonder, is this laptop using a "butterfly" or "scissors" keyboard or something else?

This must be a common problem with theseē inch laptops. Mine has bad e and D keys. I get a rapid machine gun sound on my laptop randomly. The e key is useless. Im typing now on an extrenal keyboard. The computer wont find a bluetooth keyboard.e

when i pulled the old keyboard 90% of rivets stayed in, any ideas?
how you went on? I have a macbook pro retina early 2015 13 inch, i think about trying this repair, but I saw that there are those "noses" witch you have to pull out from the unibody, if you break them in the middle the whole repair is fucked, thats what someone told me...
Or just rip them out with pliers...
Tried your recipe, and everything was as you said, except that most of the aluminium struts in the case STAYED - and was NOT SOFT ro remove or screw the screws into. I still have to find a solution.
Same situation here
I'm using a small flat head screwdriver to push against the side of the struts until they pop out. It works but it takes a lot of effort and it feels like I'm probably going to have a few bruises and cuts before it's over with.
Update: Yep, I need to get some safety gloves before I go any further
OO and also. I have never opened one these in my life. I am all PC.

:-/ I followed this tutorial but now my macbook won't even power on. What could have I done wrong? The laptop was running fine before I attempted to repair it. It only turns on when I have the charger plugged in, but then it quickly shuts down and goes into a restart cycle.
BEWARE. When 'removing' the old keyboard I damaged the right hand end of the battery - it started smoking and got quite fat. It's in the garden now. Game over. I have already replaced the batteries, and on another occasion the speakers so I knew I could do this - but I didn't tell the battery. Good thing I have an even older mac - or two.
Did it go up in flame at all? Just put a new battery in my so will be extra careful...
are you polish?
