- This job is a hecking marathon. The basic premise is the same as the MacBook Air I did recently, but these 15" Retinas are a lot more intimidating.
Amazon Associate links for stuff I used in this video. I usually get my keyboards from eBay, but you can find them on Amazon too.

I will rarely accept a deep Macbook job like this. 333 screws, mostly all different, 645 cables connections to remember... windows laptops... so easy. Kudos to you, a genuine technician. These videos are fantastic tutorials for the brave
After you’ve done about five of them, it’s easy. But I agree that the video was a great help!
@@TheSpotify95 It's not bad taking a MacBook Pro apart - things just fit and there are a lot of guides to help, if you are having problems... 🙂
I'll take Torx over Philips anyway - much better. It's all T5 inside this MBP except for the display-hinges... ;-)
Maximum respect, dude, for going all the way
“We’ll just populate as many other holes as we can.” Very helpful tutorial.
Thank you for posting this video! I replaced mine yesterday night because I spilled a sugar drink on it (MBP Retina 15" 2015 A1398) and you provided a lot of useful tips on how to do it!
I am a total beginner when it comes to repair electronic devices (I'm just used to clean the fans once in a while) and it took me 5 hours, but I did it and it works just fine.
Just a couple more tips for those who have the same model as mine:
1) You can't separate the heatsink from the CPU/motherboard on this model, it seems to be soldered (I didn't wanted to force on it, maybe you can but at your own risks).
2) I'd like to put an emphasis on the "wear gloves" things. The sides of the keyboard ARE sharp (got a couple cuts on my fingers, nothing unbearable but it is annoying).
3) I highly recommend to use a pair of pliers to remove the rivets, as shown in the video. I didn't have one, I had to remove them with a flat screwdriver and a hammer, but it cut some rivets instead of getting them to fly around the room.
Yeah you can - the thermal paste may have just hardened making it stick down
@@ifihadfriends437 Thanks for the clarification!
Thanks very much for the video. I am now typing on my newly installed keyboard, mid 2015 macbook pro 15". Some things: first, be careful following this video because he has to back out at least once (fan shrouds) if not more so if you follow along and are not aware you will also have to back out. Having titles on the screen warning of this would be helpful. My keyboard had METAL rivets. Some of the rivets came out when I pulled the old keyboard out but some remained. I used a pair of flush cutters to grab the rivets and pop them out. I was able to get all but 2 which i then sheared off flush with the case. If you dont put all the screws into the keyboard you risk some keys feeling soft and also softening over time. It's better to put all the keyboard screws in to ensure all keys are held in place. You do not want to do this job again! It took me 3 hours never having done it before. Also, I got a $15 electric screwdriver (mini) that was indispensable for this job especially the >100 keyboard screws. I would recommend such a tool.
Thanks for sharing. I watched along while replacing my keyboard for the second time. With the first, the key labels were wearing away after only a year and the capslock LED never worked. First was from talaptopparts, this new one is from it-screens - capslock LED is working this time and keys seem more sturdy more large keys have metal cross bars.
Thank you so much for recording this video. I am now typing on my new keyboard. I bodged it too! I didnt realise I had a US layout macbook and bought a UK layout keyboard so I just used tin clips to snip out the bit of the case that splits the enter key! I think I missed plugging in the old backlight though! I put it in but it doesnt work and I dnt think I plugged it in!! Stilll its a VAST improvement over using a USB keyboard!! Thanks again, you made this pretty compex process V simple!
Thank you for the video. The camera connector on the logic board is situated close to the right fan screw-standoff, and it's susceptible to being blown off if exposed to excessive heated air.
One of the best straight forward IT guys no BS 👍🏻
Used your video to help me tackle this with confidence, thank you it works like a charm and now looks new again :)
25:50 i do that with every laptop i trash, i take out all the screws, all the clips, all the wires, the screen (for the cfl backlight) and i trash the rest, its basically an empty shell with a loose motherboard, battery and trackpad in it, all the rest i keep, and yes, i replaced the cfl backlight in a very nice condition PowerBook G3 Pismo, because the backlight of those powerbooks will go pink when the backlight starts to die, and that pink hue will get worse over time, and in some cases, it will not go away when the laptop warmed up, like my model did, so i took it appart, and i replaced the cfl tube, and i was quite succesfull, its not a factory job, i have a lil bit of a brighter portion on the first 3mm of the screen, but for the rest it lights up nice and evenly, so its way better than the pink tinted backlight!
I wanted to type "I've seen worse", but it would be a lie.
I've seen WAY worse.. Will post the pic URL... 1278 was so bab you could not see or tell the color of the PCB-on the whole board!
I have seen worse, I've seen where cockroachs were inside. 🤢 🤮
dude...you are the best IT tech ive seen on YT...i wish you lived near me or my next door neighbor or best friend....you know your sht
A lot of effort in this video, Thank you for sharing.
That puff of dust closeup was epic !
And that's how you get the job done my friend.
You seems to be a really nice guy and your videos are very relaxing to watch.
Nice video, they could easily design them so keyboard could be replaced from the front and without all those rivets, just another reason I've never wanted to own one :)
Yeah, they could.... but then customers would easily replace the keyboard when a single key is faulty, instead of paying Apple $600 or something to have it replaced or buying a whole new MacBook.
try microfiber cloth when cleaning cpu's. Ive found that it removes thermal paste very well when used with isopropyl.
Brilliant! What a job.... you said you found macbooks intimidating, doesn't look that way on your video, thanks for sharing
Thanks so much for this video! I'm replacing my battery, keyboard, keyboard backlight, trackpad, and right speaker. Fairly ambitious for my first time working on a Macbook. I wonder if it'll turn on when I'm done.
Nice video as usual, you have a calming voice like Big Clive.
That unit has definitely had liquid ingress you can see where it came in, I was thinking I have not had a keyboard fail on one of these without someone giving it a drink.
That is why you have the weird shape of dust on the heat sink.
Nice video, I was able to change the keyboard by myself thanks to your excellent guide 😋
how can a person leave such a dirty machine ? buuuurk ! however, i always watch your video with great interest, because
they are always very well documented and informative. Thanks a lot !
Wow you're brave taking that job on!
I love how every time i read LFC in your title i'm like, "hell yeah, you'll never walk alone man!". Jokes aside, amazing job on these videos man, keep it up!
Yea man scouser are we sapnin haha
Hi i am binge watching your videos and as a fellow technician iapreciate your thouroughness and atention you put on your work! If i may give you an advice next time you unscrew/screw this type of cooler on an MBP do it on a "star" pattern as i already had one chip cracking pecause of this stupid springs! Keep the good work!
Smashing repair :-D, Fresh/Clean and a lot nicer than it's been for a long time i imagine.
I just use high performance automotive grease with a melting point of 265°C. It conducts heat better than thermal paste and you can get it at around 10-20$ for 200ml
you know they did it for the pleasure of making the process of changing a keyboard difficult to the user wen they riveted the damn thing instead of securing it with clips and 4 screws. and is the same with every apple product, i have 2 dell laptops: my work computer is an old Latitude E5430, the keyboard can be remove withing 3 to 5 minutes, and my main one is a inspiron 15 5558, you can pull that keyboard in seconds. on the other hand to remove my wife's MBP keyboard i have to pull the battery and main board out, is a 10 to 15 minutes job. great video brother, we are learning together, thanks to your channel, and many other technicians like you channels i was able to fix my wife's MBP kernel panic and my ps3 hdmi controller crazy short to ground.
That was boss my man. I think that is my next move as my a1398 has no power. i replaced the battery earlier this year for a similar problem. Also replaced the heat sink for another issue. Now i have no power. Swapped power adapters, and moved to a different outlet in my home, no change. Ordering keyboard and backlight and going for it. Thank you for this video.
Forgot to mention that I also replaced the logic board a couple of days ago.
Hey mate, I can recommend cotton pads for makeup removal. They are small enough, easy to hold, come in fairly large quantities, cost nothing and leave less crap on the board than loo roll. Maybe give that a try.
Hi just out of curiousity what would the charge be on something like this
Currently doing a macbook pro 2012 keyboard and touchpad replacement but worried i have over charged the customer
Don't know if you saw Louis Rossmann solder a screw mount back on using a 260W soldering gun. He couldn't use hot air due to having melty stuff too close to the mount. Sorry but I have spent the last 60+ minutes looking at the videos but I can't find it at the moment. The gist of the "technique" was to put some solder on the board where the mount needed to be relocated, place the screw mount over the hole and then get the solder gun to make contact with the screw mount. The wattage of the solder gun overcame the mount and the board's ability to absorb the heat so the solder under the screw mount actually melted. The melty bits, it may even have been the PCH but Mr Memory isn't cooperating at the moment, were not damaged and the repair was successful.
Here is a method of removing the MacBook batteries that Apple have _welded_ to the case with adhesive that may work for you. ruclips.net/video/ko0_6rYSbng/видео.html Hope you find it useful.
Warns that fiberglass pen is very abrasive and not to touch it. Touches screw cap that has just been rubbed with said pen with finger.
Great in bet though. Thanks for the great videos! I truly enjoy them and have learned a few things!
thanks for the video. Wish you would have edited out your mistakes, as we all made them along with you, lol. Also, go a bit slower when doing critical tasks, and for sure.. show us how to connect everything back up. It took me awhile to figure that all out. I had success with my repair, so I appreciate your help!
these videos of a good quality, and sortta addictive :) good work man
I am litterally doinh an Air keyboard now... Your barbaric comment is so true!
That sticker was the cease and desist notice from Apple.
Was looking for videos to enrich my knowledge about repairing my MacBook Pro mid 2015, in case I will need it, and I bumped on your video.
Amazing work and the detailing process , just one thing...
Electronic parts still hold charge , even if you are disconnecting the battery...
It would be a good idea to press the power button after you disconnect the battery , to avoid burning any components (happened to me b4) on my 2013 MacBook Pro I had to replace the screen resistors LOL...
Also I have one question.
why do some MacBooks have fans with silver fan base and some have black? any usage or something else?
Great stuff - thanks for the wellmade video! Just replaced one myself - what a job, but worth it... 🙂 You forgot the rubber-things protecting the hinges - funny enough, I just made the same error... 😀
Excellent man, thanks a lot.
Ugh. I'm glad none of my laptops have ever looked like that inside. Also, wasn't it so much easier back in the day when to remove a keyboard all you had to do was undo a couple of screws and lift it out without stripping the whole thing down? In fact on my old iBook G3 you only have to pull back two sprung plastic clips and the whole thing just pops out. My God though it's a pain in the arse to strip down when you have to replace anything other than that.
My compliments!
Wow, now that is one perfectly serviceable piece of equipment .. like NOT. Like why do they build it like that?
So Apple can sell you a new one , they want NOTHING repaired. They solder shit in and pour epoxy on stuff so you will have to buy new.
They go after people repairing this crap.
Bottom line Apple is full of greedy assholes , the walled-garden , It's from Jobs the #1 asshole of them all.
Because the top chassis and keyboard come together, this keyboard isnt oem
@@BigEightiesNewWave Correct on all counts . Apple like sheep , Baaaaaaa.
You probably watch Louise Rossmann as well
Hi there,
I am very much enjoying your utmost educational videos, and not only learning from you, I can keep up with you, since you're not in a contest of who is talking faster. You are humble enough not call yourself as professional as others which I would rather not mentioning any name, who are by the way very good at what they do.
I would appreciate if you could do some videos on iPad 3rd generation, that would not charge when on, and very slow charging when turned off.
Keep up the very educational works that you do, "AND BIG THNK YOU
Hey there. I really enjoyed this video. It helped me greatly. Thank you! I have one question. The keyboard I ordered for my MBP Retina 15” mid-2015 model came with a little blue sticker on the keyboard connection terminus…the part that inserts into the logic board connector. Are we supposed to remove that sticker when we install the keyboard, or leave it on? It covers the little metallic wires on the keyboard connector terminus. So it’s confusing to know what to do with it. Thanks!
I figured out the following on my own: 1. I needed to remove the blue sticker from the end of my keyboard ribbon’s connector because with this sticker on the connector, the connector didn’t fit properly in the logic board socket. However, without the sticker on the end of the keyboard connector, the end of the keyboard connector itself also wouldn’t fit in said socket. 2. So what I did was reattach the blue sticker to the underside of the end of my keyboard connector. And then, I trimmed the excess plastic from the blue sticker. So I made the size of the blue sticker match the size of the connector it was covering. That worked. 3. The only way I could get the keyboard connector into the logic board socket stably was to disconnect the logic board screws, and pull the board up about 1.5 inches from the keyboard, without taking the board out from beneath the edge of the installed battery. Then, I inserted the keyboard ribbon’s connector, with trimmed, blue plastic sticker attached to underside, into the connector on the logic board in mid air and closed the lever arm on the logic board socket. To have enough keyboard ribbon length to do this, I lifted the keyboard ribbon out from under the logic board, and rested it on top of the logic board, under the front edge of the battery. That worked well. And I was able to not only boot the computer (whereas before I couldn’t, because new keyboard wasn’t working), but also use 100% of the keys on the iFixit keyboard. Everything worked correctly. So that’s the solution for mid-2015 MBP Retina 15 inch.
Really interesting content mate, calming actually.
How do you find the replacement keyboards and backlight compared to OEM ?
I had every single stud left over after removing the keyboard. Now i have to remove all of them one by one. I cant see how you only had 3 left. I have like 60 left
And if you take out the trackpad from a macbook, normally its a pain in the rear end to get it lined up, well, install it, than when the keyboard is facing you, you can adjust the trackpad in the perfect position, but offcourse, when you turn the laptop around, the trackpad will shift and slide, just put 2 small pieces of tape on the left and right side of the trackpad and the palmrest, than you can turn the laptop over to tighten the screws, and when you are done, you will see that the trackpad stays in position!
your are really good and thanks for your effort to teach in details, keep it up
Very relaxing just to watch the whole process.
Anybody knows if the process on the 13inch version can be done as well without removing the battery?
You did a PHENOMENAL job with this tutorial. You certainly have me confused with your glass cleaner plug though. What on Earth does that stuff have, that 99% alcohol does not?
Alcohol doesn't actually do a very good job of cleaning. It's good at dissolving certain things, but bad on a lot of common grime.
I spilled something on my 15” MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and random keys start being held down when I’m not touching… I’m using an external keyboard now but it’s hard to work when your in the zone and keys start going crazy and page starts scrolling down
My 13in MacBook Pro 2015 sat without its bottom panel for 1 year (don't ask, battery went bad and wasn't arsed to change it) and the inside is sooo clean. How did this MB got as dirty as it was in the video is beyond me.
1:33 I had the same reaction at the same moment
good job. but power on after repair would be nice ;-)
Yea I accidentally chopped it in editing - I turned it on, then shut it back down to put the bottom screws back in, hence why it was off at the end. Thumbnail shows it turned on at least ;)
This is the state of my keyboard, but my R key has completely fallen off. Looking forward to the repair job now...
Excellent work. Thanks!
If this tear-down does not convince you that Apple products are engineered to be un-serviceable and discardable, by design, I don´t know what will.
Sadly true. I had several MacBooks from a G4 to Retina over the years, but last year when I needed to upgrade, I looked at the offerings for 2016+ macs and was like 'naa time for a Latitude.'
The true Covid-19 Ground Zero......how on Earth could that get so manky!?! Actually, this is almost like a Trash to Treasure video :)
they're annoying to clean, because apple use a non standard screw
Great work.
You could make a seperate ASMR channel and use the cleaning bits, you could put them in full length. Easy views imo.
Should have put it in the dishwasher
Lovely and clean and who gives a damn if it works , its a Macbook
Impressive work. I have a question. I've brought my MBP 2015 to Apple for a change of battery. They changed the whole topcase and I don't like the the way the keys of the keyboard are now sinking into the chassis... it used to be perfect just before they started the repair (a pressed space bar came just at the level of the chassis and now it's way below the chassis, which is uncomfortable imo).
They just tell me they can try other keyboards, but it will mostly be the same result. So I asked them to put back the old keyboard without the battery. They told me it's not possible for "safety reason"... What do you think? Do you think it's doable?
That's BS. The battery is totally removable. I did like, three last week. But Apple don't believe in repair. You could ask them to put the old keyboard and batt back in, but I'll be surprised if they still have it... If they do, you could then take it to an independent shop and just get the battery replaced.
But you're stuck between a rock and a hard place here, given that you're already this far in.
@@Adamant_IT Thanks for your prompt answer!
Good work
Learning a lot from your videos, keep it up!! :)
It took me a minute to figure out what and who Lou Roll was and I remembered you guys call the bathroom the Lou or is it the Lew? We call it Toilet Paper by the way.
The loo..! Hence loo roll..! Many of us sensitive middle-class Brits shudder at the word "toilet." Too, too ghastly, my dear, so we reach for an easy euphemism! The slightly coarser amongst us, call it the "bog!" Where you find "bog roll, of course!"
i had a call out to a faulty modem . The house was a putrid rubbish tip . The desk he sat at was covered in dirt and smokers ciggy ash in a filthy corner . I didnt turn the light on as it was covered in brown filth circumference . His keyboard was festering mess of dirt over plastic tabs , the letters were gone . Due to the dog was hairless but covered in fleas and suffering I rang the Health dept at the council and the RSPCA . The house was later demolished
Thanks, 60 some more to go Ha! appreciate the tip
Guys, for cleaning electronic elements, especially from greasy residue find yourself homemade cosmetics supplier, and find "Formulator's alcohol" it is a mixture of alcohol, and very strong emulsifier, because all fragrances are oils, and have to be dissolved within alcohol, this mixture works like magic, has a effectiveness of both detergent, and isopropyl, and 0% of water in it, unlike glass cleaner ;)
Thanks!
Well done, great video. I run into filthy laptops, 80% of the laptops is the UK are dirty and 20% of those are extremely dirty.
Hate to break it to you sir, but that CPU isn't getting proper cooling inside that chassis no matter how many mount points the heat sink has.
Good day! What do you think of USB 1.0 in 2020? The reason why I ask is because my laptop has USB 1.0.
NOT GONNA LIE I WOULD OF LOVED A FULL LOUIS ROSSMAN PARODY HERE
Great vid mate. Any tips on how to remove screws that are burred over by someone with a crap screwdriver ? I dont know who done it. honest guvnour 😂
A better screwdriver can sometimes get purchase on a bad screw... if it's completely demolished, you'll have to get a dremel and cut a slot into the head. This will likely cut the back case slightly, but if you're careful it can at least be a neat 'scratch'.
Really good tutorial, except for the reassembling that you jumped over steps and made me confused as hell, I forgot the backlight connection cable below the chipset, tried to get it with the clip and it made it break :(
how often would you say those screw hardpoints come off? Thinking about replacing the keyboard on my macbook. It was my girlfriends old one and pretty sure she spilled something on it :( isopropyl can only do so much lol. And i don't have a soldering iron.
bit of flavour for ya cuppa there !! lol
Thanks buddy. You helped me replace my keyboard with this video.
Also, you were great in Sex Education. You really had me convinced you were in a wheelchair.
Can't you just put the soldering iron right on the bolt itself? It'll heat up the bolt and melt the solder, don't need to use a heat gun or anything, might even be able to reuse the existing solder by simply reflowing it.
Hi Adamant IT. Thanks for sharing this great video. Very informative. I switch my keyboard as well and when I restarted my computer, the OS doesn't recognized the battery level and it continues to reboot. Wondering if you would have any insights of what do check or do. Thanks in advance.
The inside of that laptop made me squirm... Why would someone treat their stuff like that..
the worst is that i handle mine like an egg and just recently the keyboard backlight just died. it’s so annoying seeing others not giving a shit and the thing keeps on going while yours is slowly dying in gentle hands 😡
Please wear gloves and a mask if you ever do a laptop as bad as this in future,or better still a full hazmat suit.I dont think I could have accepted this one as a job even if I was down to my last penny, you are very brave.
Did the tape over technique, but there are "tops" of rivets and most "holes" are still blocked. IDEAS ANYONE?
Perfect I needed this video😅
Thank you for your courses and its nice and you are professionel method and interesring method i see you to how to move your hands and your mind about power suply of many pc to resolve many probleme your a genious and master of pc ...this what i think about you...technical method ..because i al a repair portable pc but not like you i rencobtre some probleme but i cant resolve it becaus i havent more idea and i ask you where i find schematique and block diagramme like you are can tou help me thank you....good man?
A good advertisement on why you should never buy a mac laptop, lol. That was painful.
I never would either but find it funny to see people being duped.
Yes, but they remain lovely machines, with a wonderful keyboard touch! But, sure, I kept wondering about the poor people who assemble these!
Great video - not sure I'd have taken that on, like someone said below there's an awful lot to dismantle creating a risk of something breaking in the process.
You've done more than just change the keyboard, infact probably extended its life considerably, it must have been cooking inside with all that dirt/dust.
Top job !
what's the total time for this, I have a possible client for this as I need to know what to charge for labor?
Ah dude, I feel for you. I’ve seen worse but not by far. Shoulda worn a hazmat suit!!
Purchased a replacement keyboard from your affiliate link and I have to say that the quality of the keyboard is abysmal. The key height between keys is off. The backlight is unevenly lit and the CAPS LOCK led light bleeds everywhere.
my macbook pro 2015 has an issue where in it intermittently starts typing in capital case. No matter what I do, press caps lock or shift, it maintains capital case. When I restart it and reset the PRAM the issue goes away, but it comes back every now and then. I have checked everything and there is no fix for this. Do you think replacing the keyboard would fix it
show the apple logo at the end... that's the sattifying bit :)
I have a HP 840g1, every time I switch on, the HP logo will not display for a while. After sometime it will come up and will switch off in 10 seconds on initial power on. But after that immediately when switch on the laptop it will come back to normal and works fine. Why this happens. Any issue with the charging capacitor?
Hey! Thanks for this awesome detailed video tutorial. I'll do the same with my A1398 Retina 15" Macbook Pro. However, I think you did not touch upon the question of the screen: how do you remove it ? Can I keep it connected while doing the whole process ? (if I put a "protection sheet" in between?) Thanks in advance :)
You can, but I strongly suggest either removing the screen (it's just another six bolts at the hinges, and the little hinge covers next to them) or open the screen and hang off the desk. While doing this job, you'll often be pressing down reasonably hard, so there's a danger of cracking the screen. Not heard of it happening, but IMHO it's better to get it out the way so you can be as rough as you like on the chassis.
@@Adamant_IT My bad, you explained it in the video, sorry for that :) Thanks for the answer anyway, such a great tuto.
Just to let you know as successfully change my keyboard, because of you! Thanks A LOT for the very nice tuto, all the details, etc.. No other word than PERFECT! That was the first time I jumped in such a dense electronic system, but it was worth it. Everything is working great: best way to increase computer lifetime!
