      Great tips! Your slider movements are super buttery smooth too! The only quick tip I'd add would be shooting in aperture priority mode for long day-to-night or night-to-day timelapses with big shifts in light, along with a prime lens that has a manual aperture ring so the iris blades aren't moving between shots or creating a tiny bit of flicker... and then letting the camera ramp the shutter speed up or down. You probably already know this, but AP's also really helpful when making hyperlapses that may start / finish in two completely different directions :)

  • @leocarstens3555

    If you want to do day to night/night to day timelapses its sometimes better to do it in aperture priority mode otherwise you have to adjust your exposure manually all the time. Even though that might cause a little bit of flicker, you do not have those abrupt changes in exposure that you will get when adjusting manually. For removing the flicker you can use LRTimelapse for example.

    • @mattih
      @mattih  6 лет назад

      Yea the flicker is just so bad that I would rather manually change exposure over time if needed

    • @yorkshirefolk67
      @yorkshirefolk67 5 лет назад

      Never had flicker ever whilst shooting aperture priority, although I do cover the viewfinder of my camera as stray light through here is what causes your aperture priority to mess things up and flicker, usually when sun is behind you.

    Those are very good high quality material that you got there! I make a current timelapse by going to the same spot every day and take a few shots (with my mobile) and pick out the right ones at home before matching them in Photoshop every few days.
    But this... this video is clearly a demonstration of how the pro's show how it's done!

  • @GeoscienceImaging
    @GeoscienceImaging 6 лет назад +18

    So with manual settings, how do you account for changes in exposure caused by changing light? If you're trying to shoot a sunset for example, then the correct exposure at the beginning won't match at the end and the scene will be too dark.

    • @albaezstudio6622
      @albaezstudio6622 2 года назад +3

      Im guessing he is using the ND and then trying to match in post. I would also like to know more about the settings for that type of scene.

    • @matthewsequoyah2665
      @matthewsequoyah2665 Месяц назад

      I believe you need to shoot in shutter priority , S or TV setting, and then allow the camera to automatically adjust the iso and or the aperture as the light changes. You may need to set a negative -2/3 exp value as well.

    Another good trick for TL on the 70D is to hit your shutter f-stop button, and while holding it, loosen the lens slightly so the pins can't talk, and the lens will be locked at your chosen f-stop. Don't forget to tighten back up after your shoot! Shoot TL with the lens loose, in that way you also lock in your depth of field and rids your final video of that annoying flicker effect at higher shutter speeds.

    I think that location scouting and composition are equally important as well. Parallax in boring location is much more boring than simple steady timelapse somewhere in cool spot. So start out, do not buy all the expensive gear yet, just have fun and try different settings - for example if you shoot clouds, shutter speed does not matter that much and you can even go without ndfilter IMO.

    the problem when you set everything in manual is that -especially in sunsets- you have a dramatic change in the lighting source (sun) and you have to change iso or aperture not to say white balance as well. It would be nice to give us a tutorial for such kind of timelaps... thank you

    Just shot a time lapse. Everything went right. And I shot it with entirely manual settings. The problem arose however, that on the day I was shooting there was a ton of cloud cover that would move in front of the sun periodically. Leading to some frames being exposed incorrectly (and about 15 hours of extra work). That being the case, which setting should I have left on auto? Should I still prioritize a slower shutter speed?
    More info: it was an 8 hour time lapse, and I was shooting video while it was going on so I couldn’t check the exposure every 30 seconds.
