I had to get the VANOS solenoids replaced on my 2016 B38 218i at around 45k miles. Symptoms were very rough running engine to the point where it would stall when starting unless I gave it some revvs, cost £1070 at the independent BMW specialist, including a chain tensioner replacement...8 hours labour apparently
Yep as the injectors need to be removed. The bolts holding the vanos sprockets are also the oil control valves 🙂
The filter screen bursting off is actually a consequence of the fault, what happens is the central valve fails and instead of only the plunger moving the full assembly inside the valve moves witch eventually burst the filter screen. If you catch them before they burst you’ll find if you press one finger on the screen then press the plunger you’ll feel the full assembly inside moving witch obviously doesn’t let oil flow correctly into the adjusters/sprockets. I’ve changed loads of these very very common.
Thats really useful to know because I had no idea why this happens. The power of the internet 👍I will try that next time and this will be a good test. Thanks for the info 🙂
Can this valve failure causing knocking on start up and only in the morning? I got exactly the same DTC stated in the begging of the video...
I have a fault with the exhaust Vanos, on inspection the ‘c’ clip has fallen out which appears to be common. Is the vanos easy to replace?
@richarddriscoll5201 With a locking kit yes however the injectors are difficult for a diyer. Please see this video and you will understand. HOW TO REMOVE A B48 INJECTOR

Great vid again. A friend has replaced the exhaust solenoid valve on one, but now comes up with ex cam solenoid installation error. Wonder if the screen and circlip has failed on that.
Thanks Wayne. The vanos wheel will have cracked inside.
Hi mate, I’ll be honest I’m stressing, I’ve had a EMS light pop up, scanned it and resulted in 3 fault codes: Camshaft Exhaust Sensor Signal Implausible, 130304: VANOS, exhaust camshaft, control jammed, camshaft jammed and a P13C9 code. I’ve change the sensor drove it for a little and the EMS light has not come back. Car starts fine, can’t notice anything with the driving, cleared the fault once came back after 5 days. Can you please tell me if I will need to change these bolts. Thank you.
Came across this exact fault today at work. Baffled me what had happened to the screen 🤷♂️
Me too until that guy below enlightened us all. Only afterwards could I see what he meant - the whole valve body is displaced internally 😅
great video 👍🏻 just came across this at work , one question , the sprocket itself , where should i position it on the cam as i’ve only just found out ur supposed to mark it before removal ,
There is no keyway so you should lock the camshafts in place with locking plates. Without those the valve timing will be off.
Hi Wayne, do you know the torque spec for the vanos central valve ?
No idea. Whos Wayne? 😅
Hello, if I change the vanos exhaust electric solenoid on my N20, do I need to do a bleed procedure afterwards? Do you have any tips on how to do the bleed procedure on the N20? Thank you for the informative videos!
There is no bleed procedure like on the old S55 or S54 with the seperate vanos units. Just crank it over with the coils disconnected and pull the fuel pump control (fuse to ekps or relay) crank it to build up the oil pressure and your good to go
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Thank you!
@ovidiuzav 👍
Can you tell me as a customer what is the cost to repair that problem? My bmw has come up with that fault code, I was told it’s a 20 minute fix by one garage and then another garage told me it’s a complete engine strip down. But seen this video and it has enlightened me. Thanks
Hello Bryan it depends. A transverse mounted B series takes around 4 hours including re-aligning the injectors as they have a special tightening procedure (see my video about that)
The rear wheel drive variants unfortunately require engine removal as you cant do anything as the chain is at the back. 20 minute fix refers perhaps to a new solenoid but that wont achieve anything since the solenoid only controls the bit thats faulty inside.
Its a 2 day job minimum for those engines
Thank you. I believe mine is rear wheel drive, so I’m looking at a hefty repair bill. Might just buy an Old Ford fiesta had one for 10 years and only had to replace the tyres. 😃Thank you for you honest answer.
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Great video! Thanks! I have a B38 F20 rear wheel. Would we get the same error codes if really the solenoid is dirty or faulty? Do you have a video showing how to replace the solenoid on the B38 rear wheel?
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Hi! How many hours require an engine removal for fix this problem on a rear whell drive? Unfortunately I have this problem in my F20 B38... How many money? Thanks a lot for the information!
One if my best friends b38 made rattle noise on lift off shifting gears. The rattle apparently is also caused by the vanos. The BMW dealer quoted vanos + cams for 2400€ ex vat. Is that a normal price?
Camshafts? If cams are replaced this price seems ok. If the cams are rusty some RVS treatment will remove the rust. Find out and let me know why they want to change camshafts.
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Yeah I thought changing the cams was highly suspect, could they get damaged due to wear on the vanos, (With timing being off).?
Does it happen in B58 as well? I thought I am driving a car with reliable engine...
Not that I heard of 🙂 I did have a siezed B58 on a 3 year old X5 hybrid. Oil pump failure suspected. B58 is a superb engine. You should have very little issues.
I have a b38. These two mistakes. Will replacing the entire vanos solve the problem? Or maybe something else needs to be done apart from replacing the vanos? Thank you.
Just change the vanos sprockets and bolt actuators and you should be ok if you have these same fault codes
Is this a serious fault? Is the defect costly? I'm worried about the car because it's young.@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding. Thanks brother.
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Is this an expensive repair? Invasive? I have a young car, but I'm worried about it.
The error also disappeared from the board by itself. I do not know what to think.
@SebastianPierog Expensive on b48 rear wheel layout as engine must be removed. Transverse layout not as expensive. It isn't mega common but if you have a front driven b series its not a huge job mate.
Will Vanos failure trigger check engine light?
Usually it will, this type of fault will for sure.
