Considering this is the first time hearing about this and not finding much on the forums I’d say it’s a small issue, an issue, but not something that’s been plaguing the platform
I originally seen it on RUclips and found a few threads on it. Then one came in of both years, and thought it would be interesting to see how and what changed.
A lot of people saying this is mainly caused by bolt fatigue there’s actually an updated cam cap bolt apparently… would you recommend using new bolts and torquing to spec?
There's a few options. Remove old fractured/cracked cap; manufacture a new billet one with the cam center machined in the right spot? (ie. based on measurements from your existing cap). Could slightly beef up the existing design as well... Sure, this won't be a cheap fix, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than replacing a head. I'd actually be very surprised if there wasn't a known "range" of cam centers, based on manufacturing tolerance, that you could design around this (ie. model A; B; C; D depending on the cam cap used). Alternatively, you could probably design the above with a generic billet cap with increased tolerance around the cam; then provide a set of half-moon bearing shells (ie. A, B, C, D, E, F), which provide an offset cam center depending on the one that is installed (ie. the shells aren't uniform/concentric).
@@headgames not at all. The car had missfire and after checking everything the last was to check the head. We checked the head and the cambridge was broken was really easy to see. Now my question, can the cam cap failure damage the engine or do you think i should be fine after replacing the head?
@@headgames Hi, I'm having this problem, I have a junk head from a 2022 B58, can we use the caps from this one? Since they've already updated it here, I don't know if the lubrication lines match!! I would like to know since I was thinking of sending it to you but maybe I bought the wrong junk head! Regards
@@headgames thank you 🙏🏻 apart from fixing the fault with the camshaft cap, I want to do a CNC port on my head and a few other things. Where can I contact you?
Is this an issue for the everyday guy? Like, if I never modded the engine in a 2020 X3M, would I care about this issue? Or maybe the better question is, how does this present when it fails? Finally, is this a recall issue or no?
@@headgames lol exactly and bmw redesigned the head and cap with the extra long bolt just for fun, all though bmw did drop the ball considering the distance of the fasteners to the head.

Thank you for the update. Very informative!

Break My Wallet and my cam caps.

Looking to buy 2021 x5, so would that have the new updated cam caps??
Hi. How can I diagnose the presence of such a problem?
from what I have seen, it shows itself as a misfire. But, a misfire can be so many things. I would guess you start or end at the cam caps.
Do you think this will be a problem with early year b58s like for example gen 1 2017 bmw m240i?
Yes, it is the same cam cap. And the Gen 1 is actually how I learned about it.
@@headgameshappened to me on m240i 2017
@@ErvinLosanc sorry to hear. Was it hard to diagnose?

@@ErvinLosanc engine should be fine. What year?
so after 2021 S58/B58 is good nice
What is the fix in this case buying a new cylinder head???
Buy a new one, or if you can get a junk head that has good cam caps we can hone it.

You guys have a full solution to this issue? I have a 2020 x3m making 800 wheel and I can see this in my future 😢
no solution yet

Finally, is this a recall issue or no?
Has anyone tried to tap the block and use a longer bolt on the shallow side?
It’s not possible because there’s no room for it. It’s directly between the 2 oil holes so it would basically make it one big hole.
The plastic valve covers suck bad as well.
That's not true. The valve conver doesn't suck bad like you said. We don't see barely any valve cover issue at all all over the world.
Stress raiser?
IDK. Maybe, but it seems like the mousetrap things pull on the cam cap and break it because it is not secured.
lol this shouldn’t even be a thing or a issue in a engine in the modern era
Oh but the Mark 5 Supra will for sure be as reliable as the old Toyota made Mark 4 with the 2J 🤣🤣🤦🤦
The ultimate Driving expense! POS.
It's not an issue at all. Now everyone just make BS video for money
Ohhh! So all the people who have the issue and this head issue doesn’t exist? Makes sense we would break a cam cap for the $100 video.

literary make a long bridge work as a cam cap
Perhaps you mean literally?
