    I have been a professional horticulturist for 20 years. A big part of my professional work is restoration of old orchards that have been left to go. We also have around 7 orchards we take care of regularly.
    Particularly the last 5 years many people are rediscovering the value of having trees that produce food….
    Steven your videos have always been helpful and inspirational.
    Before the winter season starts in earnest, I often will binge watch your orchard videos.
    Thank you for all you have done to share your orcharding experiences.

    Thanks everyone. Please excise me not responding to every comment and question, the orchard has slipped down my list of things to do these days. And most questions have already been answered in other videos or my book (available from Amazon 'Tales From an English Orchard'). But I remain deeply moved, humbled, grateful etc to hear from folks who have begin or improved orchards with some inspiration and advice from here. That was my main goal. I am deeply satisfied. Thank you all.

    Great to hear from you again Stephen. It was your channel that inspired my small home orchard 5 years ago. I'm starting to get fruit from them now and I'm learning from my mistakes each year what not to do.

    Hi Steve. As always thanks so much for everything. You were one of the most influential people on my decision to start a gardening RUclips channel. Well, here I am nearly seven years later. I am soon to add to my orchard, both at home and at my allotment. Great you are still at the growing. Dan.

    Always love a random walk through your orchard just to check on how things are doing! And I would like to thank you for your inspirational, instructional videos and book. I managed to rescue 12 heritage apple and pear trees, and plant another 10, guided by your discussions and thoughts, and I take great pleasure in tasting, and sharing, the outcome every year!

    Good to see you Stephen. When you started your videos I started my orchard . I had up and downs trees diying and then replanted killer spring freezing. And this year a bumper crop , and I have enjoyed it all. But this year I get to share that joy. Thanks for your help throughout it all . Cheers from across the pond.

    It was so good to see a new video again, I enjoy the updates and walks around the orchard and listening to your thoughts. You were one of the people who inspired me to plant a good few fruit trees in my garden here in Norway, I've got 6 apple varieties, 3 pear varieties, a couple of cherries, plum and greengage, and plans for more! It's incredibly satisfying eating healthy unsprayed fruit from 10 meters away. Best wishes to you and Julia.

    Good luck to you Stephen! Some years ago, you kindly sent me a couple of scions of Broxwood Foxwhelp. I carefully grafted them and now have three fine Broxwood Foxwhelp trees in my cider orchard. When I pick my Foxwhelps I say "God bless Stephen and his family!"

    Thanks so much for your videos! I have enjoyed them over the years and learned a couple good things. I have a farm in Sacramento California and am 7th generation farmer, I decided to start an orchard and got some great grafting ideas from you. So a few years ago I saw your video which was some of the first on RUclips about grafted trees, I started grafting. I now have over one thousand trees I propagated root base and grafted to. It’s up and full producing this year..thanks for the knowledge and great videos….I hope you the best of health for you and yours…

I learned grafting and obtained many scions from you, and we have now planted over 100 trees in 4 orchards. So huge thanks to you!! Long may you continue to tend your orchard..

    Very interesting to hear you talk about the late frost. I had the same thing on my orchard in Wiltshire, but as I live in central Bristol and very rarely get frosted at home I wasn't sure if it was a frost or something else. I mostly grow Black Dabinett cider apples, so it hasn't impacted me too badly, but I have desert varieties I planted in 2016 and still haven't tasted.

    Very nice to see you and hear that you and Julia are doing well. I as well lost a good part of my apple crop due to late frost, but both the pear and peach trees were unaffected. I'm curious. When you eat your Seckel Pears, how long do you store them before consumption? I have a routine down for my Bosc and Bartlett crops, but can't seem to bring along the Seckels. Thank you and hope to hear from you again soon. Stay well.

    I am growing couple varieties mentioned on this channel in the US, PNW, Washington. Ashmead’s Kernel and Cox’s Orange Pippin. Both are very delicious and flavorful, but they are probably not for our climate. Ashmead’s Kernel has a lot of spots and not very good appeal on the skin but stays good all the way to late fall/frost, and Cox’s Orange Pippin starts going bad on the inside of apple with browning and dark spots on the flash almost before it fully ripens. I guess that’s the trade off with heritage varieties.

    A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. Proverbs 25:11
    As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. Song of Solomon 2:3
    In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Revelation 22:2

    I'd forgotten about this channel, and another video popped up, shame about your sweetcorn, it's good to see that you don't get too stressed about the losses, you seem to take them in your stride and still be happy about the harvest you can still get for your personal use, yes much better that you are keeping the orchard going than it be bulldozed and developed, my families old home is now occupied by my brothers fam, and near them there is an old horse field that the council or housing association has turned into a community orchard, the trees are still young and fruitless but the idea is good, I have newish neighbours who have taken on a well overgrown and unloved apple tree, I helped them do minimal ground level maintainance on it to stop low branches taking eyes out, and helped them picked some apples, but after being used to the taste of my brothers tree's apples (at my old family home), I realise there is some really bland other apple varieties that have no taste and are tough, it's such a shame as they were looking forward to crumbles and stuff, next year I will pick some surplus from bro's tree and gift so they can either mix with theirs or just use bro's for crumble! Take Care

    I do not spray my apple trees in my home small orchard, but they have a lot of maggots in them worms… Is there anything that I can do organically to illuminate that?

    • @dk2614
      @dk2614 2 года назад +1

      I imagine having maggots eating the worms would work in your favor. Lol. I think we all knew what you meant.....😁

    • @TheBlindGardener
      @TheBlindGardener 2 года назад

      @@dk2614 LOL. What ever is ruining my precious apples, I need to get it stopped somehow. I have noticed that some trees are more infested than others. One year I have tried to use apple sider traps (DIY) and it seemed to trap some Codling Moth, but the worms did not really reduce following year. Moth probably migrated from my neighbor’s yard and the cycle began all over again. I would like to find organic method to control it. I am not spraying my trees no matter what even if I have 50% apples with worms. My chickens will take care of them, not magots. LOL.

      @@TheBlindGardener I hope you find a solution. Whether Dr. Hayes is able to offer you the answer or Google. There's probably an answer for you.

    • @familyfruit9833

      Similar level of coddling moth damage here too. So far I've tried nematode sprays and the hormone traps. No noticeable difference from the nematodes at all. The traps trap many but haven't really reduced damage. There are bats zooming about in the evenings, probably eating the adult moths.
      What are your trees like otherwise @TheBlindGardener? Our are v old so there are limitless cracks for the the cocoon stage, which might be part of the trouble.

    • @TheBlindGardener
      @TheBlindGardener 2 года назад

      @@familyfruit9833 Trees are fairly young and doesn’t seem like there is a lot of cracks. I also try to proactively pickup all bad/dropped apples on the ground as well all dead leaves. I don’t know haven’t found the organic solution just yet. I did not try nematode sprays. Maybe there is some sort of plant that will deter coddling moth. Thanks for the reply.
