Further info from Roy Aquavitae:
"Typically" it is:
70% 10yo first fill bourbon
10% 12yo first fill bourbon
20% 16-18yo refill American and European
These are vatted and filled into 30% first fill PX hogsheads/butts and 70% heavily charred American for another 12 months.
Then vatted again (!) and put into "inert" 3rd or 4th refill barrels to let it "marry for a bit longer".
Phew. £72 in the UK.
Great info. I knew they were crazy complex, but I didn't have the details.
I forget which batch of Victoriana I had, but I loved it! I went back and got a second bottle because of how rapidly it disappeared, and the backup bottle performed the same trick...
I could not find and it was never even sold in my state so bought one last time in Scotland.
Glad I got it and like it but as much as others seem to love it I rather have an Octomore or a Port Charlotte
you know...I've still never seen this locally either and we now seem to have most of their lineup.
I've got half a bottle left I've been savoring for a couple of years. It is a solid bottle and it doesn't really need water at all. It was my whisky of the year for 2021. At the time I payed 75 Aud on special that works out to 50 usd which is really good value.
the 54.2 % ABV is different than the 51's. Better get a Campbeltown Loch batch # 3 from July 2022 to review. all the other reviews online are form earlier batches
The other, other Campbeltown
I just open my bottle which is from 2019 version, I really like it a lot, feels like there are a significant amount of sherry inside, which also mixed quite well with the bourbon
I found this exact bottle to be a bit of a chameleon malt. I have a 2017 bottling still at 51.5% and it always changes whenever I drink it. I've had it once where it was a massive clove bomb in taste. Glad to have 1 backup and also managed to get a 2018 only Batch 001 version of the Victoriana at 54.8% before it became the 54.2% it is now. Will be fun to compare those 2.
Thanks for the review guys. Your palates are like a spectrograph. You can both pick the subtleties most mortals would miss. It helps us novices heaps. I still have 2 bottles a full bottle I picked up 2 years ago and one I visit occasionally. I’ll have to have another go following your review. Cheers
I voted in the OSWAs but not for this bottle. There are a few theories doing the rounds as to why it won 'Whisky of the Year' but I think the most convincing is that it's a cask strength Campbelltown whisky and it's AVAILABLE and affordable. People will even forgive its NAS status when you factor in the above.
The cask strength thing must REALLY be driving this. That said...I've never seen one of these for sale in person. I had to go online. I can find a springbank 10 right now. But my biggest gripe remains the 15 is just better, cheaper (from what i've seen), and did I mention just better?
@@topshelfdustin3060 I'm in my hometown of Cardiff right now and I went into a shop the other day and there, on the shelves, were bottles of Springbank 10, Longrow Peated, Kilkerran 12 and Kilkerran 16. The Springbank 10 was £75 a bottle so I gave the manager a stern look and asked why? He told me he got them from a wholesaler as the distillery wont sell to him direct. His choice was one bottle of Springbank 10 from another wholesaler for £50 or six at £75 along with the other stuff from another. The Kilkerran was reasonbly priced. He went for the numbers but I was in that shop on Christmas Eve and regular folk who know nothing about whisky were walking past it.
@@welshtoro3256 75 is about what retail is here in the states. It's funny how value works. If you were into bourbon you'd be paying prices I'd vomit at the though of and vice versa.
But at the end of the day you have access to the bottles, and while those prices are high. I don't think you grasp what "markup" means to those of us who drink bourbon. Anything less than 250% markup isn't seen as much sadly.
For me, it's a lovely dram. One I really enjoy, like GS in general. Great watch guys and Happy New Year. Cheers.
Happy new year!
Thanks Dustin/Mike. Very nice review and fairly spot on for my experience. Cheers All!
Great to hear!
It all depends on what is available in the reserve cellar at any given time, each batch could be a different journey.
I've got one of the old bottlings of the Victoriana in the bunker. Now I know what to expect. I got it based on some reviews on youtube at pre tariff prices. Looks like I may be one and done.
Always good to try new whiskies. Another step on the journey.
Great review guys, I have this bottle, haven’t cracked it yet. They seem pretty hard to find in the US under $100 now.
I really enjoyed my Glen Scotia Victoriana. Not sure of the year or batch just that it was excellent. Unfortunately, it's gone and I can't find it anywhere now.
More and more common these days.
Dustin naied it for me, I have the same bottle and it's really nice but I don't ever go out of my way for it. I haven't tried the newer ones yet either, but I think they're slightly more preferred? Either way, I still see this around $80 in some places, which is certainly a buy at that price. My hesitation would start at $100. Cheers!
The 15 is great. The best bourbon matured bottle I’ve had in that age/price range. Would love to hear your thoughts on a better bottle.
For 80 bucks, I can't think of anything.
@@topshelfdustin3060 Longmorn 16?
@@teddyballgame25 i still haven't had that one.
@@topshelfdustin3060 best damn whisky i ever had... Cant get it now in sweden.. :(
@@shaddepadde the longmorn or the glen scotia? I keep meaning to have someone get me a sample of longmorn, I know a few people with bottles. Just always end up drinking other and frankly more "special" types of bottles when we get together.
I found the older victoriana’s to be better honestly. The newer bottles are still a decent pour though. As far as NAS bottles go however, I’m really surprised this would get selected over something like Lore, which is far more interesting IMO.
I've also seen the Laphroaig Lore appearing in more stores. Maybe it is the price as to why the Lore didn't win. Lots of Laphroaig bottles have gone up in price in the last couple of years.More than other distilleries.
If Lore's US pricing was equivalent to the UK's, it possibly would have garnered far more support from the American OSWA nominators
@@IlludiumQ36 the pricing on lore has gotten pretty rough in the US.
I prefer Lore by a sizable margin but they are different whiskies and I will always understand someone not liking Laphroaig... I love it but most whisky drinker's I know have a hard time with Islay's and Laphroaig in particular. It's love or hate.
@@topshelfwhisky it's the 150+++ msrp in the us now Mike. I know I know...it's 100 in ohio, but nowhere else.
Happy 2023 guys! I really liked Victoriana..Tasted like a hint of lobster
Happy Holidays Roy!
I must have got a bad batch because I didn’t rate mine very highly at all.
Typically it is:
70% 10yo first fill bourbon
10% 12yo first fill bourbon
20% 16-18yo refill American and European
These are vatted and filled into 30% first fill PX hogsheads/butts and 70% heavily charred American for another 12 months.
Then vatted again (!) and put into "inert" 3rd or 4th refill barrels to let it "marry for a bit longer".
Still able to get these for $99 though that may not be for much longer due to the buzz it's getting now.
Binnys had them for $69.00 on their End of Bin sale for a long time, about a year ago.
Dustin & I have fond some great deal's at Binney's Lake Shore.
Guys, I enjoy this and on second bottle (about $100) but haven't sipped in almost a year. Much prefer Springbanks. Will taste again blind.
🥃
Cheers!
Hi guys!Following your advice, I bought two lagavulin 1991-2015,although they are not cheap. But I believe it's worth it. By the way, can you send me your lagavulin ranking list? Or give me top 3 best lagavulin in your list. Thanks.!
I'll leave mike for the final but my gut is the most recent 25 year. The 24 year fies ile. And then there are 3-4 where I could go with any on any given day. Mike will have the more ready answer lol.
Nice!!!That is one of the best in my opinion. Did you get the canvas sack? Bottle #? My top five are below (never tired the 37 Year 1976).
25 year 2016
24 Year FI 2015 (1991-2015)
21 Year 1985
21 Year 1991
18 Year Jazz 2013 (1995-2013)
