We just arrived into the UK and Abby will be stationed at RAF Lakenheath for the next 3 years. First order of business: finding a home base. In episode 1 of American Abby, Abby visits 5 houses (actually about 9, but they really start to blur together after 3) and has to pick one this week. Her OHA (Overseas Housing Allowance)is 1,100 GBP ($1,348.24 USD) so if a house's rent is higher than that, it had better be worth it.
This first episode does seem to go a bit long, but there was a lot of stuff to see. If videos are this long in the future, it will be at a much more interesting location.

So beautiful having a sunroom to enjoy. We were living out in Moulton for a year with a church up on the hill. They were there from long ago and had a jousting field. We had a meandering stream, a large weeping willow, and a beautifully planted back garden. (I no longer say YARD. ) We extended our tour over and over until they wouldn't allow a longer one. Really loved being there, and we managed 5 years. My son was born at the Hospital on Lakenheath. Our first four years was at 14 Elevedon Way in Newmarket. I really had culture shock when we returned to the States.

House 2 , at 4:21 the serving hatch from the kitchen is usually only found in older properties (if they haven't been removed). My grandparents had one but the house was built in 1933. They fell out of favour I'd say after about the 1960s. The trend now is not to have a separate kitchen but a kitchen/diner (so you can appreciate sitting looking at and smelling dirty dishes).

I renovated a semi-detached bungalow in Mildenhall back 1995. 18 Rowan Walk Mildenhall. Sold it 2 years later after my enlistment was up.

It's a bit late but welcome to the U.K. There will be quite a few differences between a U.S. and a U.K. home eg power sockets being three pin not two, 230v not 110v, sinks often having two U.S. faucets/spigots= U.K. taps rather than a mixer tap (we use a sink plug and mix the water in the basin), boiler or combi boiler wall mounted radiators rather than furnace heated forced air outlets in the floor, etc...

The method of heating and the lack of central air conditioning have been big differences from home. We got here at the end of summer so didn't have to endure too much heat. Curious how next summer goes!

@@americanabby9852 Depending where your from in North America you may often experience extremes in the weather. In Europe, not so much, in northern Europe you will need forced or central air while in southern Europe you will need air conditioning, as the U.K. doesn't experience these extremes often (the U.K. normally falls between 0 and 12 celsius) though we may get a month or month and a half of very hot weather in the summer and about three weeks to a month of cold weather in the winter, so our homes aren't geared up for either or both.
House four, which is the one you went with has a ceiling fan in the bedroom, that maybe advantageous in the summer (though you may also experience a more humid heat than what your used to so it may be more a stifling heat than you'd expect). If the last three years are anything to go by, ask about for a temporary or portable air con unit (do your home work on them though, some need more maintenance and an eye kept on them to empty them and refill.

@@4svennie Definitely. I am from the Midwest in America. So very harsh/cold winters and very hot summers. So heat and air were the norm. I'm relieved to find it's much more mild here.

@@americanabby9852 Hopefully the more temperate climate will help you settle in that much easier.
As you will have already found, while we (in the most part) share a common language and history, you'll come across quite a few differences, some will be insignificant others more surprising, it's always fun learning. ;)

Dad was stationed @ RAF Mildenhall in the mid 80's. We lived on Golden Miller Cl, Newmarket for the first year then moved to Base housing @ RAF Lakenheath by the elementary school but all that housing has been torn down & rebuilt now.

If William Shakespeare can use double superlatives as in:
"The most unkindest cut of all"
Then this lady can use double comparators any time she chooses.
