  • NEW, BETTER 4k VIDEO of DRIVE
    • Spring 2021 - RAF Lake...
This first video is pretty rough, try the video above for a much steadier, clearer, video of the drive between Lakenheath and Mildenhall.
This is the full drive on dash cam from RAF Lakenheath to RAF Mildenhall. I know we wished we could look at stuff like this before we PCS'd over here. With the difference in traffic and road conditions here, it's hard to tell how far of a drive it is between certain locations. This is the full drive between Lakenheath and Mildenhall taking the quickest route.

Thank you for the posting. My father was stationed at RAF Lakenheath 1979 to 1983. Went to RAF Mildenhall quite a few times. For 3 years I rode the bus to school at RAF Feltwell.

Thanks! What memories for me also. Was stationed at Lakenheath from July 1969-Dec. 1972. Mechanic on F100's and F4's (493rd TFS). Like everyone has already commented, road hasn't changed much although I do like that they have curve warning signs. We were at the mercy of being sober to tell that the curve was coming - LOL!!!
Went back as a reservist in 1984, 1994, and 2000 - all to Mildenhall. Loved the UK. Thanks to Google Street View, I still scroll up and down the streets of London where I hung out and partied. Neighborhoods look the same.
Someone do the same in Newmarket.
    Thanks again.

Yes, thanks for this memorable tour. I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath, 1961/64 I had my Morris Minor back then, and I made this drive many times headed to the Mildenhall Airman’s Club, however I recall this drive in the dense damp fog, after a night of adult beverages many times heading back to Lakenheath ...its not for the faint of heart. I loved my Suffolk, East Anglia 3 years. 👍🏻🇺🇸

We lived on Golden Miller Cl, Newmarket for the first year then moved to Base housing @ RAF Lakenheath by the elementary school but all that housing has been torn down & rebuilt now. from What I understand you cant take a left out that gate any more & take the A road to Mildenhall.

Mildenhall Air Shows ! My English husband speaks on them in wonder. Huge events with up to 250,000 visitors ! Cars stacked for miles to get in . A taste of the U.S.A. in the east of England with lovely friendly Americans , American food , American cars.....etc. Sadly no more either due to safety concerns or budgetary constraints , or both. Don´t ever leave. Please !

As a Brit who has never been near these two bases I never realised they were only 3 miles apart! My Uncle lives at Littleport which is not too far away and served in the RAF during WW2 on Lancaster bombers from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire. He is still going strong at the grand old age of 99 this coming December.

Technically, the white sign with the diagonal black cross is the "national speed limit" sign. The national speed limit in the UK is currently 60mph on single lane roads and 70 on dual carriageways eg motorways - unless indicated otherwise. These signs are used so if the government changed the national speed limit, it could do so overnight without the need replace all the signs. This is a rare event, the last time the national speed limit was changed was in the early seventies duing the oil crisis. The maximum speed limit was lowered to 50mph in an effort to conserve fuel.

I found out about 6 months in advance also. I looked up everything possible about Lakenheath before I came over. Such a small place, there wasn't too much to see. But, it's so close to so many big places, you'll never get bored. In the last few weeks, we went to Oktoberfest in Cambridge, Apple Fest in Ely, and a musical in London. Next month we are going on a super cheap trip to Barcelona!!!

Many good recommendations on things to do and see here.
To add, hop on a train for a visit to Edinburgh. A 3 to 4 day weekend is best. Celebrated New Years eve of 87 up there. The Scots are so welcoming. Time of our lives.

Just before entering the roundabout at 1:37, there used to be a little shop on the left called the Spar. They sold candies, pornos and newspapers. My older brother and I stole a good bit of those 1p candies in the buckets. We delivered newspapers for Mr Marley when we were kids from around 1995-1997. He was a short, fat man who wobbled when he walked. He paid us in quarters. We lived at 324D Newcastle Close and delivered for that road, Canterbury and Newport, which were the three main cul de sacs that made up the base housing outside the base. Very cool to see this drive. I haven’t seen it in 22 years. Thank you 😘

I had an odd joint spouse tour. Hubby got Mildenhall and I got Upper Heyford. We lived on Lakenheath and Croughton. It was only when I'd land at his base could we see each other. He flew a desk and I flew the Aardvark. I still own a home in the UK. Now happily divorced and retired. I gave up flying and just drive where my heart leads me. I will never forget driving behind a fish and chips caravan, fully in use, hot grease splashing everywhere. Ex got shipped to different bases, but I was locked into that jet. So most of you know how few and where I did most of my sorties to and from. Great career. Great memories. I'd love a video of Main Street, Soham.

Wow Abby, I left RAF Lakenheath in 1980. Looks like nothing has changed in the towns and such. I kind of had two assignments while I was there. One was working the F-111's and the other was working on inspections for War Reserve Materials that were located at RAF Sculthorpe where my family and I lived. That base has been closed, and the housing sold off. Thank you for sharing, I miss being over there. Some of the best years of my life both while in the Military, and then finding out about the World too.

I was stationed in Germany for six years and once drove out of the camp gates on the left hand side of the road for about fifty yards before realising my error. Similarly, whilst driving in the UK, I once nearly ran headlong into a lady driving a minibus full of kids that was on the right hand (wrong) side of the road. She was a Dutch lady who had lived in the UK for over 10 years and driven all over the country. (Luckily no one hurt and only minor damage to my car). Just saying. The lapse in concentration can happen despite ones best endeavours.
