my instructor taught me in a diesel, always made me set off with clutch alone, I knew that petrol cars required more finesse. he obviously wanted to save time not teaching me coordination. I got my own car 3 months deep into lessons and it was a 1.6 petrol focus and it really helped me get some skill and control. it made lessons easier and when my test came around I was able to apply the techniques I learned in my own car and with my instructor. I'm glad I passed like a week before my test I messed up at a ridiculously steep hill junction and my instructor came in and took the clutch off me but he didn't give enough bite, and I ended up burning the clutch to get out of the junction. he made out as if it was me who should get the clutch up higher, which was impossible as I took my foot completely off the pedal as I felt him take it. he had no confidence in me doing my test early, soon proved him wrong getting a first-time pass with 0 minors, suck it mark.

Thanks for the tip about not having to stop the car after stalling while moving. I am inexperienced, a learner driver, and I had this happen to me the other day. I had a cyclist in front, and wanted to overtake, but realised a roundabout was coming up, so changed my mind. I'm in 4th gear, and broke to keep a safe distance from the cyclist, but forgot to change down. So I stalled the car (in 4th), but stayed in control of the car and immediately put it into 1st, restarted the car and continued on into the roundabout (the traffic behind wouldn't have even known I'd stalled). I was impressed with my control and calmness in the situation, but then started doubting whether I had done the right thing, and what a driving examiner would have thought of what I did. This video has made me realise I probably did it right. And great videos, great channel, thank you!

    Small tips:
    1. When you change gear to first, and you holding leg on clutch, car will change sound from lower pitch to higher and when you feel you are going forward, just freeze leg. I suppose thats left leg or you are alien with more legs. And when you start to move, gently pull out leg from pedal and hold a little bit acceleration. Thats to prevent stalling.
    2. But if you are at some hill, you gotta change gear to first first, and then hold gass around 1500 RPM and freeze, and gently go from clutch pedal.

All my driving instructors have said the car moves forward only clutch-release, no throttle required, and the car in which i practiced before a driving test(with an instructor) used to move forward with only clutch release.
But the car which we own requires a gas to move forward, and clutch release simply stalls the car. Only you were the one to acknowledge this fact, thank you. Great tutorial.

Just focus on what your struggling with. I used to go out for about an hour or two each time have a casual drive on roads that aren’t too busy find a nice flat car park with plenty of free spaces for practicing parking when your getting the hang of it then you can start to challenge yourself. The main thing I can tell you is don’t rush it too much it will all come together eventually just stay confident and don’t get disheartened if things aren’t progressing as fast as you would like them to. Built up areas and busier roads will be a little stressful at first but you soon get used to them. (All the best and good luck!)

After walking back inside ashamed, I watched 5 minutes of this video and ended up driving 20 minutes straight with total confidence. I stalled the car a couple of times and I’m still having little issues when it’s traffic (I kinda get nervous a little bit, I don’t wanna bother the other drivers if I’m moving off to slowly), especially because I did exactly what you mentioned in the video, first clutch, then gas. I think the reason instructors teach to use the hand brake when stalling is because on a lot of cars have vacuum brake boosters that quickly lose pressure when the engine is off. That means that if you mess up your timing or fail to turn the engine on in time - you might gragually lose control of brakes and start to roll.

For me, the best way to avoid completely stalling is to just push the clutch all the way through and give half accelerator and give it some revs when the car is in the initial stage of stall but not completely stalled. This technique lets the engine breathe freely again and you don't need to restart it again. Its only been 2 weeks since i learnt it and i know you might think its not the correct way, but trust me, this method has been really helpful especially in the really slow moving traffic in india where i sometimes just lift off the clutch way too early. This helps the engine gain its natural revs back.

3:36 I'd disagree because a lot of modern cars have electronic handbrakes and hill start assist. If you press the accelerator before the clutch is biting on a hill, then the car will immediately release the brakes and cause the car to roll backwards causing a dangerous situation.

    • @hybridyd1305

I agree. I'm not a fan of the little window switches they call hand brakes these days. That physical brake and lever is what gives you the ability to control the situation for safety reasons. This is why teaching manual should be apart of driving school for all teenagers. If they have to shift, they can't text. If they have to grab their brake lever, they can't grab their phone yanno? But for all other real life situations where it would come up, I would 100% use a manual lever than a little switch.

Also I'm a qualified and registered engineer so can tell you that gas before clutch causes excessive clutch wear. Wear on the clutch friction plate is caused primarily by heat, the higher the speed differential between the friction plate and pressure plate the greater amount of thermal energy that must be dissipated when the clutch is engaged. For their car, you have to really PRESS the gas for it to take, whereas is you did that in my instructor's car it would shoot forward at high speed.

Select the right gear: use the palming and thumb up, thumb down method, feel the gear selector springs. Set the gas: gently depress the gas pedal and hold it. Gently lift up clutch: gradually bring it up through the bite and car will move away. Stay calm and practice lots. Best wishes

I stalled 3 times on an uphill heavy traffic. I had a little bit struggle on starting the engine 3rd time because of the battery I think.
    Experience is your best friend.

Partially engaging the clutch will stop the car from rolling back at a steep road, but it's a bad habit because it will make too much wear on the clutch disc, use handbrake instead

I learnt about only using the clucth this tome instead of using gas/accelerator. Thanks man that helped to learn something new and make live more easier.

the way i avoid stalling is just holding in the clutch, redlining then dropping it really quickly, once i get up to about 10-15 mph then i let off and i have no use for the clutch at that point /s

This was really helpful, my instructor didn't teach me what to do in this situation aside from obviously restarting the car. I didn't know that you could start the car while it is rolling 🤭
