Driving Instructor Takes Driving Test | "I WASN'T EXPECTING THAT"

  • I take a driving test with a fellow driving instructor. It was in a new area and was slightly challenging, putting myself in the position of a learner driver. There are a few driving faults during the driving test.
I do some commentary whilst driving which will help learner drivers understand what I am doing.

I think speed limites on a steep gradient should be increased by 10 mph because a steep hill near me used to be a forty zone but changed to a 30 zone so cars tend to struglle up that hill and slows down the flow of traffic and used to work better as a 40 mph road i think some speed limites need updating because there are many roads in nottingham that are huge but are 20 mph zones but then the smaller roads around it are 30mph witch makes no sence and there are 30 mph roads that are not in built up areas with only heges on the sides and i think motorways and dual carrage ways should be 100mph because cars nowadays can easily travel safley at 100mph + and has worked in germanys autobahns with no speed limites and has less accident than the uks motorways and carrage ways

@@aleebea Yeah but I think he liked the fact that I kept calling him "sir" lol. He also made me parallel park in a road that was connected to a dual carriage way, and gave me a fault for stopping when the cars were behind me. It was so busy that I had to wait for a few minutes for all the cars to pass, and in the end he just told me to ignore any cars behind me because this road is very busy. My instructor was with me and spoke out saying, this spot is highly unusual and he admitted it was not a normal place for parallel parking. He also took me out of the area/route - but justified this by saying it was during school time and parents are dangerous drivers and didn't want me to feel pressured.

Yea it all down to luck and the assessor i think i failed my first one years ago down to just unlucky was pulling out on side street all clear as and was on the road a car come speeding round the corner and was behind us the 100 year old assessor thought i pulled out in front of him witch i did not but what they think/stay sticks if had cameras would of proved i was not in the wrong but will never happen in the UK. I think it down to luck of the day and fail rates as they have targets to do if so many people pass in that day good luck not failing as like any other buissns it is a racket that needs to make money.
I was lucky on my second go thought i was bad due to the driving instructor had someone in the back of the car assessing him so had 2 people in the car watching me but forgot he was even in the back over time. The driving instructor was middle aged and we talked a bit while driving that helped me not over think everything and he was down to earth not like the 100 year old i had first time that not even say a word the whole time instead of what we doing next he was just awkward and off putting the whole time.

Brillant video - thanks Pin. I sat (and failed) my test twice, 10 years ago. I am trying again in December. Having had two different examiners before, and compared their styles, some faults I got in the past felt really arbitrary, like your faults for not turning your head enough or your mirror "effectively". I worry now about this. I've been trying to find the answers online for the most ridiculous worries - how long is a piece of string type questions. Seeing an instructor in the same situation as that relieves the anxiety a bit.

  • @romanlakes
    @romanlakes 4 года назад +322

I’ve had my first car for a month now, passed my test on my second go. Really thought I’d failed it as well and had a couple of curveballs on the test but I dealt with it all okay thankfully. My best advice for the test is that if you make a mistake, try not to dwell on it. I didn’t check my right shoulder blind spot after I was asked to pull over the first time and I thought I’d failed there and then. This was after I’d done my manoeuvre really well, dealt with an awkward situation from a lorry immediately after leaving the test centre and just generally having had a decent drive. I was so angry after that and I could have failed due to complacency while I was dwelling on my mistake. But instead I thought I’d just make sure I checked my blind spot every time after that, have a good, safe drive and the instructor might be lenient. Turns out she either completely let me off or didn’t notice at all, as I didn’t even get a minor for it! Apparently not checking your blind spot isn’t an immediate fail anyway, according to my instructor, so getting angry about it was pretty stupid. Also, due to nerves, I actually managed to stall on my test when pulling out of a junction, but I kept calm and dealt with it rapidly and didn’t interfere with anyone’s drive. So imo the answer is if you make a mistake, keep calm and carry on - correct it and act like it never happened.

I drive in the USA but my first driving test (and my last, since I passed the first try) had 4 red light runners, about 10 people didn't use their signal to turn or change lanes, and one guy nearly plowed into me when they didn't care to look when coming out of a residential road. I dealt with all of them expertly and with finesse. I had only been driving for about 2 months at that point and my instructor said I'm a gifted driver.

@@ThallanarRabidtooth congratulations, well done - sounds like you did really well on your test! One thing I would say is that with all due respect, the standard of our driving test is much harder than any US driving test I’ve witnessed (and I have close family who live in the US). My driving instructor had been giving lessons to a lad who’d passed his test in California and then moved to England - that test involved driving around some cones at a test centre (wtf?).
There are many, many ways you can fail our test here, the standard is very high and it’s one of the hardest tests in the world. This is likely why we have so few road deaths per capita compared to countries like the US. It probably explains why you’re running into so many dangerous drivers too! On top of that, the vast, vast majority of us drive manual, so we have to learn in manual over here. Overall, I do believe the level to be much higher.
After almost two years of driving with a licence (and many months of lessons), I don’t claim to be an amazing driver, but after two months you will definitely be really inexperienced. Have confidence in your ability but most of that ability shouldn’t be dealing with things as they happen, it’s having the foresight to plan ahead and avoid them if possible. That’s the most important thing with driving, planning ahead so you don’t panic and aren’t surprised by things.
And despite our high standards, we still have a ridiculous number of pricks on the road who do dangerous things. Don’t get too confident in your ability, you’ve driven for two months and you’re going to keep learning for years. All that said, well done and take care!

RoyaltySarah it isn’t even a matter of automatic vs manual. Manual isn’t even hard unless you’re driving an 18 wheeler or a straight up race car. Our driver’s tests are so easy and that anyone could pass them in their sleep. We just have bad drivers through and through. The tests here are more of a formality or than an actual test. On top of all this, we got everyone driving an oversized crossover and thinking they own the road.

@@kiwionpizza1336 I know when I went to NewYork in 2016 when I was about 17 years old, the first thing I noticed on the freeways was the speed drivers would go at. It felt as though we were on a racing track with other vehicles, the majority of cars were huge and went at speeds that are practically illegal in most roads here in UK or Ireland.
The rates of car crashes is more common in the US though, and I can see why, they give driving license to pretty much anybody.
But in the UK the road rules are so tight, speed cameras are common, ticket people fining people every minute everyday, checkpoints everywhere. Its harder getting youre license here but it is in efforts to help saves lives in a way.
Hence the common use of buses and trains, uber etc

Talking about what you’re gonna do before you do it is a great idea! It makes you perform the action appropriately whilst showing the examiner you know your stuff... might need to get into a habit of this for my test in a few weeks to make sure I pass (third time lucky lol)
