  • #Triumph held the press launch of the 2020 #ThruxtonRS in Portugal so off we went to spend a day on the new 1200cc modern classic. With improvements throughout the engine, tyres and brakes plus a 6kg lighter weight than the old R model, the 2020 version on paper looks like a winner but how does it hold up on the roads?
    NB: at 2m54s I meant "peak power" not "peak torque"

    Nice refinements to an already great motorbike. I am thrilled with my 2017 Thruxton 1200 R. Upgraded the front master cylinder to the Brembo RCS for improved brake feel and power.

    Jet black is the best color for RS

      Patrik Masserati I don’t think I’d personally be able to pick anything other than British Racing Green on a classic British sports bike like this, but my goodness this looks absolutely amazing in black.

      Patrik Masserati Yeah, my favorites are the black & brushed aluminum. I’d be fine with British racing green, though it would be third on my list. I didn’t like the matte two-tone paint they did for this year.

      Of the 2 options for sure! But a bit too stealth for me. I prefer the silver ice color they offered for the original Thrux R. Hoping they offer that on the RS soon

    Beautiful machine, i really like how triumph designed and fitted the radiator to look so unobtrusive on the bike 😊

    The TFC version has breathtaking throttle response in the mid range. Just where it's needed on normal roads. If they've given this model the same tweaks it will be way above and beyond the older Thruxton R.

    I use to love the old shape of the speed triple - now it's become one of those squashed buel style/shape bike. I'm loving the look of the thruxton RS, cool café racer with a touch of hooligan about it

    I've got the r and there's really nothing there that would make me think of trading in for it ...extra hp and 500 revs isn't going to do it ,besides I bought mine for its looks n sound n riding pleasure ,they do get a lot of looks when you're out n about

    The Rocket 3 cables go through the handlebar. What do you suggest, the cables stick out the ends of the clip-ons? There's nowhere for them to go, anyway it's authentic retro to have spaghetti everywhere. The riding position won't suit everyone? Isn'tvthat the point? Actually positioning itself between sporty and roadster fills a niche nicely. Apart from the paucity of colours, I'd say they're close to nailing the Thruxton.

    There’s very little body difference between the Royal Enfield Continental GT and the Thruxton from riding the new. I went with the GT because it’s half the price of the Triumph.

    I'd like to know. If you're craving a Thruxton which is the smarter move for the money, buying a second hand R right now (since I'm sure people will be upping to the rs and prices will drop) or just buying a new RS? From my understanding you can do most of the upgrades to the R to get it close to RS spec (bore kit, lighter covers, lithium battery, and brakes), the only thing you cant do is that mapping and the 500 extra rpm.

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  4 года назад +2

      It's a realistic idea - if you can grab an R for a bargain and then do the upgrades yourself. You'd be losing out on the development to the engine internals making it Euro 5 friendly though plus rider mode mapping and the increase in rev limit and peak torque refinements. Depends on the price difference between the two once you've finished inc. the time spent and paying for the work.

    • @bennettsbikesocial
      @bennettsbikesocial  4 года назад +1

      UniversalBikers If you’re asking which I’d prefer the if you stick the front end of the Thruxton on the Speed Twin then that would be the ideal combination!
      Realistically, the development of this Thruxton just edges it ahead of the ST if a hybrid wasn’t on the cards.

    • @kleinbottled79
      @kleinbottled79 4 года назад

      If it were my money I'd go speed twin and swap on some flatter bars. If I didn't like the front suspension I would upgrade it. The speed twin is like 60% of the price of this RS isn't it? You could throw a lot of mods at the speed twin and still have a much happier wallet.

    £13,000 ! ? and most of those bought; will spend more than half of the time in the garage tucked away. Basically to look at, not to enjoy what they made for. This bike and a lot of new (expensive) bikes are not build for the average biker who commute, and enjoy riding bikes, summer & winter time. They are built for the guys who can afford another toy in their collection. Jealous ! ? Probably but at least honest.

      As much as I want to thumbs down this you're absolutely right. I've been saving pretty much all year to get a Thruxton 1200 and will be settling for the R because the RS is too big of a jump in price for barely any performance which is what I'm really interested in.
      What is really beginning to upset me is that the 2016 1200 R is now being listed for way more than it's actual value because of this in the United States. Its listing value is marked at 8.9k (USD) and private sellers and dealers are trying to squeeze and extra 1-3k out of them thanks to the massive jump in price of the RS. To be quite honest, it's making me sick of Triumph all together and wondering if my money would be better spent on a XSR900.

      @@That1J1 I like the XRS and it suppose to be good fun too. I have a Z900 2017 naked, just replaced the akrapovic exhaust with a GPR plus LED indicators. I am tempted to go for the 2020 version because of the new dash. Not that much bothered about driving modes, as all those gizzmos push up the price plus I am an old fashion rider (who thinks) who knows to control the right wrist when it's whet. I wish you luck with whatever you choose to buy fella.

      The bikes worth is what someone’s willing to pay for it. As for sitting in someone’s garage if that’s what they bought it for them so what? It’s their bike. If you can’t afford this bike tough luck buy something else. The best things in life aren’t free!

    too expensive for what it is. Costs almost 20 grand here in the US. Its for those who can afford to keep a collection of bikes. Not for the mainstream biker who has one or two bikes
