Several years after doing the rebuilt and restore of this intro and it still makes me think of when I heard it again after 30+ years. Like many of you, I sure felt young again. Glad everyone is enjoying it as it was a very important one to release.
Hell Interface aka Boards of Canada. Amazing to hear some of the other music. The Science International theme had been in my head for over 25 years. Finding bits and peices or it but never the whole thing, meant I had to keep seaching. I could not stand to see such a show vanish. I am glad I wasn't crazy and not the only one looking for it. Hope everyone can enjoy it for years to come.
BlackCanuckTO1970, I, too, never knew of Joseph Campanella at all until I started watching this show. Then I saw him in those commercials for Fresh Start laundry detergent and Surtec garbage bags. Then I saw him in Golden Girls and Beauty and the Beast and Superboy and Star Trek: Voyager.
Those over-exposed pot lights and heavy Moog always get me. The theme music literally makes the hair on my arms stand on end. I loved this show as kid. The 1970s were so very long ago now.
I watched this all the time as a child. Fond memories and to think here we are today looking at the things that were an idea or just introduced being commonplace today.
Music by David McLey, who later (c. 1980) developed the McLeyvier computer-controlled analog music system, commissioned by producer Michael Spivak for the 130-episode science tv series, on a ARP synthesizer, I believe (not a Moog as some previous comments assumed).
I was under the belief that this was performed on a PDP 11/10 which is on display in the Ontario Science Centre. I have an arp explorer 1 and it doesn't sound like this. Your thoughts?
Rob, I didn't know David McLey till 1981 so this was recorded before I saw his working system. I'm pretty sure though that he was using an ARP 2500, and he interfaced and controlled it with some flavor of PDP11, I'm not sure which. It might well have been an 11/10. The McLeyvier was an LSI 11/23 computer with custom built analog voices.
I have been searching for this for YEARS! I couldn't remember the name of the show, but I had a piece of the theme song in my head... wonderful memories. Thanks for finding, cleaning and sharing!!
My dad as a child loved science, so did I as a matter of fact however it isn’t relevant. My father watched this show as a child and loved it, and he wanted to share that love with me as a child. He took the tune of this song and personalized it for me. Neither of us remember what he made the lyrics but this by itself is enough to put a tear in my eye of the childhood I wish I could experience again
Thanks from me too! I'd love to hear some of the music that was used from the 'footage' reports that alternated with the...I guess you could call them the 'in studio' reports - the ones where Joseph and Tiu would appear in bubbles in front of the cartoons. Thanks for posting!!! Much appreciated!! Another hole from my past has been filled! ;)

@@heckler73 You got that right! Nowadays I (we) can pick and choose what WE want to watch and not have somebody try and make us watch something we don't want to.
@@phayzyre1052 That's a good observation. Now "they" really need to work much harder if they're going to attract eyeballs to their sitcom sensationalism.
I remember watching this in the afternoon after kindergarten in the late 70s. My first science show and it had the best theme music. I think there was a closing credits version of the theme music with some vintage NASA footage as well.
God this brings back memories... and us getting our first cable box from Comcast when it was run out of a crappy little shack from an old ham radio location in the late 70's, early 80's. I watched this on Nickelodeon back then.
For some reason this theme song was playing in my head. I remember watching this show when I was in my teens. I learned a lot of stuff. Yeah they should do a modern version. Now this is the year of the COVlD-19 pandemic. Just think what scientists could come up with if everyone got on the same page in developing vaccines & studying other modern science of this century.
Back when I was small and watching this show, the theme music gave me goosebumps. Over 40 years later, it still does.

Thanks so much! One of my favourite songs when I was young. I just made a simple arrangement of it on guitar by ear using your video.
I utterly, completely loved this show when I was 13 or 14. The music and imagery brings me back more than forty years. Thank you for this.

Rest in Paradise Mr.Campanella. This is how I got acquainted with you.

Not totally sure but I think it was an ARP rather than a Moog.
PDP 11/10
I feel my old, I grew up glued to the telly with this and the tvo station and all those wonderful programs.
I watched this all the time as a child. Fond memories and to think here we are today looking at the things that were an idea or just introduced being commonplace today.
WOW....the memories!
Havent seen this in over 40 years.....unbelievable.
I was 13 or so when this aired. Decades later after not hearing it once since, this made me grin. Fond memories. :)
Why did that bring a tear to my eye?
Did the same thing, when I found this good sound sample. Video I had. Sound was crappy though.
+Jamie Woods It did for me too, I watched this show all the time growing up in the 70's and early 80's.
Over 30 years later and I *still* get shivers hearing this music. Thanks!
MASSIVE THANKS. I too have had this music in my head for over 25 years. THANK YOU!!!
Man, I can't believe I haven't heard this haunting song in over 30 yrs! Thanks for posting this.
Washed over by feelings of nostalgia. Love this intro!
This is just incredible. Reminds me of the 70’s so much. Such good times.

Thank you for clarifying. Awesome to know more.
Rob Townsend I wish I knew more about his work before the McLeyvier.
who would have believed in 1980 that 40 odd years later there would be TENS OF MILLIONS of "flat-Earth/anti-science" Americans :(

Talk about old school. Brings back memoris of classic Nickelodeon!
I grew up with this stuff in my native Jamaica
I used to love watching this show when I was a kid. And not just because I had a crush on Tiiu Leek. :-)
I always loved this show as a kid. The music from the opening credits has been stuck in my head for ages.
This is another one of my favorite TV shows that they should put back on in reruns
I agree, I'd love to see the reruns and the technology predictions that never came to be. I think it would be kinda cool, even if only hosted online.
This show was cool!

I always sighted this theme song as the start my Moog/Analog syth obsession...i was 4 or 5 at the time. This show was on Global i believe.

That first part used to scare me as a two three year old looked and sound like having a bad trip lol
Holy crap!! Listen to this song stoned.
This show was a major benefit to staying home sick when I was 8.
My dad used to watch this all the time. This is why the theme music has been an earworm in my head ever since. lol
Tiiu Leek is the ultimate name. She's the cats meow too.
I loved this show back in the '70s.
Best intro music ever!!! Brings back my childhood!!!!

This sounds like a lullabye
Great show, never get enough of science. I love outer space science, including raspberry pi computer technology use for video games.
our children need this show...i say bring it back!
That makes sense to me.
oic duc very educational

Still one of the most unique show openings ever. And that music? Fugged about itttt.
RIP Joseph Campenella
I remember this show. Shows like this taught you something useful.
All shows teach you nowadays is how to be stupid!
Let's be fair. TV is not the medium, anymore.
You're on the "new" TV as you read this. _WE_ are the new TV.

I have always loved this song. So I used your video to make an easy guitar arrangement. Thanks so much for your effort!

I just watched it! It was awesome!
Thank you for finding this!
Reminds me of Saturday nights before Hockey night in Canada.
it totally made my eyes wet. I think I just relived being 6 years old.
I used to watch it on Nickelodeon all the time until it was canceled

Does anybody remember that beautiful analog synth theme from Tell Me A Story? Can I hear it somewhere and who made the music?
Boards of Canada-ROYGBIV
If you havent heard it yet, listen right now.
I need MORE dammit! Anybody got any others they can upload?
holy crap..I scarcely remember this from my early years,t'was no Sesame Street but cool in its way
Hard to believe Joseph Campanella is 92.
Has this song ever been released separately from the TV show?
Haven't found it yet. Been looking for years. Lucky I could tweak parts to make this
version.
I would have bought the 45 of this, had they released one.
I have checked out various albums featuring various television show themes. Who knows, maybe there is an album out there with this theme on it.
