I once met Elwy Yost at Islington subway when l was a little girl. It was like meeting Elvis. He was as big a sweetheart to me, just some kid, as he was onscreen in his shows. So genuine. I treasure this memory in these trying times.
Elwy was 'the' coolest. "Saturday Night at the Movies" should have been a triple feature every weekend. Something we as Ontarians 'without cable' looked forward to. Great Epics, Classics and Sci-Fi, the only program teenagers and adults could appreciate from TVO back-in-the-day.
Oh geez.... I recognize every name in the credits for SNAM and everyone in the sig-off video. It was a great place to work for 32 years, and the commitment of a small group of people to do excellent TV was truly incredible.
Wow. This brings me back to a time when media would just "stop", and you were left with a sad test pattern, unable to distract you any longer that night.
I always love seeing Greg Joy make that jump at Olympic Stadium in 1976. A friend of mine who was competing in the games was standing outside the stadium when it happened and could hear the roar of the crowd.
OmG I am a 1979 baby !. Aka a real grown man ! That don't whine for no one !. Or is sucker to side with anyone. But. This sign off music !. The sound of it. Just lingers in my soul !. Those were the days. ! I DISLIKED Sunday's ! Because. This show wasn't playing anything on on Sundays!. And when Monday came. ! I was hooked. . Use to enjoy watching . The star with 4 dagger .. and only used to end a witch queen or dragon!. Of someone.
Im showing my age too, that sign off is STILL hot!! I was sayin on a similar video.... Can't we go back 2 some of this?? Btw, Canada is cool with me any day of the week & I got mad love 4 u, there is still an individuality about u that can't be touched or changed, believe that!.... From a Detroiter
Hell... I'd have LOVED to get hold of one of those old switchers.... especially that gave those ripply modulating wipes.... finding sonething like that is practically impossible
God I'm only 34 and I remember all of this stuff! Has it really disappeared in such a short period of time? I can't say it's been more than 20 years since all of the great stuff on RetroOntario seems to have been eliminated from TV. I guess that's the price we pay for 24/7 broadcasting.

Another excellent trip down memory lane. This stuff is embedded in my head. It's like it happened last night.
Man I'm getting old.
old is gold
Be glad you lived at a time when television was not partisan, it was free and creative. I miss those times also.
omg, i remember watching that "oh canada" video on saturday mornings when i would wait for my cartoon shows! wow, the days before 24hr tv.
Sooo true!
The video tracking brings back fond memories of a much better time.

Dear sweet Elwy, saw him a couple of times in person at the TVO Open Houses. He is certainly missed.

ahhh the splicing of tape for reel to reels... OH THE JOY ;)

Agreed. Probably a good subconscious signal "it's time to go to bed."
@@johnpatterson4272, or read some of the books checked out from the library
@@marc_simmons Well said. Of which, I did frequently.
I miss watching Elwy with my dad. Great memories.

Fond memories of my Dad coming in to tell me to get to bed: "The song's played now, you know it's time for bed. Go on."
Wow, I remember a time when TV shows went off the air when I was a kid!
79 Ontario is the best sign off
I'm crying
It brings back beautiful memories, doesn't it? ❤️

I think one of my elementary schools used this version of the anthem in the morning. Guess I know where they got it!
Best version of the anthem
A more positive era. So much good about life in those days...
Funny but given the scourge of the "infomercial" today, a sign-off now looks like a God send.
Indeed
yup. I grew up watcing it on channel 9 in thunder bay :D

i wish i could have been alive to see these used on TV
Not to be confused with "NBC Saturday Night at the Movies" in the U.S. - which to my knowledge never had an on-set host.
Who is that female diver in the blue swimsuit from the O Canada film? Love her so much.
I wonder what did they do with all that old broadcasting equipment like the vtrs and old transmitters?
They probably got recycled.
Hell... I'd have LOVED to get hold of one of those old switchers.... especially that gave those ripply modulating wipes.... finding sonething like that is practically impossible
Koolness !

The best part is when the kid bites his little brother's face full of drool
Klinker Klunk my brother was always scared of the little "cannibal kid". Anytime this came on I would make fun of my brother being so freaked out.
I'm simply searching for the happier days. The only happy days we ever get are when Adam and Eve had this whole world to themselves.
What music is used in the credits for Saturday night at the movies
3:00 Looks like Robert DeNiro
I have never watched tvonario tvo or tvokids before
WES79 Canada
Question: Was it common to hear O Canada as a sign-off before it officially became the national anthem in 1980?
Some stations also used the British anthem as well
What is the song on the tv show's closing credits?
2:29-2:30 French?
No UK anthem?
uh, am I losing it or is that David Letterman’s voice starting at 1:41?
@kanukster thats how i feel too watching these clips :D
2:32 o Canada 🇨🇦
0:43-1:39
3:40 - 3:48 - Is that the future Caitlyn Jenner I see there?
No, that’s Canadian athlete Greg Joy.
