Hard to believe this guy had to go to England to get noticed! He was absolutely incredible!

I wanted to throw Scott's country+western flavored albums out of the window, and just in time I remembered he was an American....
What makes Scott so unique is his flawless diction. He sounds totally British. (American P J Proby had that gift too, listen to his big 1965 ballads. Jim Proby even exaggerated the British sound. His 'Somewhere': "Dere'z ah place foh as, somah where ah place foooh as)
Scott rarely was criticized, but there have been people who whined: "Scott Walker takes out the Brel of Brel."
It's true that Brel performed with a raw emotion. Scott's voice didn't have that emotion, from the very first Walker Brothers single "Love Hurts" he always sounded polished and sophisticated. That's why his "upperclass" interpretations of Funeral Tango and Next (I don't know the French titles) are so splendid. And personally I think, had Scott sung everything in French (LOL) I would never have known what the songs were about! If you're raised with English as your second language, you don't understand French. YOU. DON'T. (lol again)
Translator Mort Shuman did an excellent job for Scott, btw.

The same with P J Proby, a Texan. He had made some demo trials for bigger stars like Elvis - Jim had a greater voice than Elvis! and started a group, but they never had a hit. Producer Jack Good noticed Jim's talent and send him to London. Proby had a phenomal voice, from screaming falsetto to a deep operaic bass. He also exaggered the British diction, what went great with his bass. Look up 'I Apologise'!
In England Proby had a few top 10 hits, but he misbehaved, spend too much money and his career collapsed. He probably knew Scott only through gigs with the Walker Brothers.
But PJ Proby has always lived in England, he never went back to the States.

It's a pity this song was never released on any album as it's one of his best. What an incredible career. It's interesting to note that Scott started his recording career in 1957 as budding teen idol. He also appeared in a stage musicals and on TV as a protege of Eddie Fisher (then Elizabeth Taylor's husband). He then went on to do session work as a bass guitarist and played in a surf band in the early sixties. All before The Beatles and The Rollings Stones began their recording careers. In the beginning he didn't see himself as a lead singer but this changed with The Walker Brothers when it was obvious his voice was more suited to the big Phil Spector sounding British hits of the mid sixties than his co-singer John Maus (Walker). The first four solo records Scott 1-4 he recorded after the break up of the Walkers are monumental. His later career 'experimental' records are less to my liking but show a man who, unlike most of his contemporaries, was never interested in going over old ground. In the end it was his voice, particularly during the sixties & early seventies period, that I loved. He is sorely missed.

Thank you for another gem! I think Scott and Jacques are really soulmates.
Scott creates the same feeling as Jacques does, it's not even about lyrics (although IMO Mort Shuman and Eric Blau did a great job here). Scott transports the feeling - directly into your heart and soul, full impact!

    • @herbieshine1312

I think you have missed the point of what the song is about.
It's not about being alone so you go and do charity work it's about loneliness of the soul/ mind/ heart.
There are times in life where it doesn't matter if you're with the 7 billion other humans on the planet you can still feel alone.
If you listen at the beginning of the song he says "there are all kinds of loneliness"
So what if it is pretentious?
      Why shouldn't it be pretentious?
Jacques Brel was well known for writing very dramatic "over the top" songs. Songs about the deepest darkest parts of human feelings/ desires. His writing and the interpretations of his songs are dramatic/ pretentious by the very nature.
What would you suggest to listen to instead of this?
      What music do you like?
