A close second to the great Neil Diamond’s - recorded in ‘71 on his ‘ S t o n e s ‘ album. More ‘depth’ to Mr. Diamond’s baritone - suitably for this revered track .
I wrote to the bbc years ago and asked them if the 'Scott' series was available on video (it was that long ago!). Sadly the tapes of the show were recorded over, a common practice back then, so recordings of the show no longer existed. Unbelievably sad. What an incredible voice he had. May he rest in perfect peace.
Scott will never be forgotten he is without doubt the greatest and most talented singer of the last 50 years or so. I remember the first time I heard his voice singing Love Her when I was a young 15 year old I was mesmerised by him still am every time I hear him. The quality and tone in his voice was unique. Thank you so much Guidofski
One of the very few singers who can actually bring me to tears. Absolutely mesmerized by his range of emotion and a extraordinary human being, will always be missed❤❤
Peter Anthony: thank you for your kind words. I will be downloading a few of Scott's tv show recordings. I know the sound is less than perfect, but hopefully fans won't mind too much!
Scott, such emotion , you cast me into some kind of dream world for two and a half minutes, the world stops and all I hear is your singing. No comparison.
AN ERA WHEN TRUE SINGERS SOUNDED JUST LIKE THEIR ALBUM WHEN SINGING LIVE. OR VICE VERSA. SUPERB SINGER WITH A BEAUTIFUL MASCULINE SMOOTH VOICE. MR. SCOTT WALKER SINGS THIS SONG BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE.
Scott 1234 & Till the Band Comes in are Five of my Favourite Albums.....So Beautiful R.I.P & Thankyou Beautiful Man......Your Legacy is Incredible......
This guy had a unique voice, a real gift. He could turn his hand to any song, he was so versatile. I loved his music and still do, I have lots of mixes of his songs along with his compatriots, the Walker Brothers. His passing is a sad loss to the music industry but his music and songs live on, a true legend.
His phrasing is quite beautiful on this version so the slightly less than perfect sound can be ignored and just thank God I can hear it. Because I saw him sing this more than once on TV, I can 'see' him singing this: and prefer this simpler arrangement to the recorded one.
Wendy Lewis: thank you so much for appreciating the performance over the imperfections. I know purists complain about the poor sound quality but I think the fact that these recordings are the only thing we have left from his tv show is a blessing to be cherished. You were so lucky to have been there at the time, too!
So musical, so touching and professional. A nice voice used to great communicating effect! We never heard enough did we. Wonderful strings BTW, including some harp. Very nice to hear a snippet of "Joanna" at the end too, greatest ballad ever.
George Burrell: thank you for 'staying' till the end of the clip. I love the "Joanna" bit as well, lovely arrangement; they also use it as the intro for some of these shows. It was clearly his "calling card" at this time.
Ne me quitte pas ! Jaques BREL , qui à voulu voir Vesoul et en chanter la chanson !!! ne me quitte pas aussi reprise par Nina Simone et tant d'autres ! Merci ! Cordialement .
Thank u guidofski...I have spent much time over the years playing your Scott vids on repeat...in a weird way you had a major influence on my 20s and 30s...Scott has absolutely has become one of my favorite artists over the years... thank u again!
On his album Scott 3, the finale is with a female choir. Although the choir sings heavenly, and Scott sings it in an almost sacral way, I sometimes doubted if it did Brel's composition justice. Brel performed it in an introspective way too, choking up, and with emotional outbursts. Although Brel did have a combo backing in the finale, he would never have used a classical choir. Around that time, the critics started to come in, "Walker is not Brel! He doesn't have the emotional power Brel had." No, Scott was no Brel. He didn't pretend to be one. He did the songs in HIS style, with the voice HE had. It's a fact though that his emotions never became rowdy, he never went beyond sophistication and elegance. I think he did Brel fantastic. Especially in sarcastic, satirical songs like "Funeral Tango" and "Next", which he did in a snobbish and life-weary tone. Also, thanks to Scott, I finally could understand what the French lyrics were about! (Translated by Rod McKuen or Mort Shuman) The choir in If You Go Away increases the melancholy, the heartbroken mood. Here, I hear his live version without backing singers, and that quality is still there, it's still a very melancholic song. Yet I prefer the 1969 album track. For me, that is the ultimate version.
This is a VOICE !!!!!!! He could have had numbers ones after number ones if he stuck with pop stuff or good ballads ... his later works were too off-the-wall for my patience .. just saying before I'm attacked
".......and I'd have been the shadow of your dog, if you'd only kept me by your side......."----the original lyrics at the end. They kind of, DRIVE HOME the point too much for Rod McKuen, I guess. Jacques Brel once said of this song of his that it's about "the cowardice of men".
@Gordon Hastie I quite sure that it was Peter Knight who arranged the orchestrations for all of Scott’s tv series. Peter Knight was just as good as Angela Morley in my view.
Jon woodville-price: Yes, I'm afraid the sound quality on most of these tv recordings is very poor and I apologize. I am only including them because I know many Scott fans will appreciate the opportunity of listening to these rarities. Thank you for commenting.
@@jonjonwp I know RUclips is flooded with the song (in HD sound), but as I said my intention was to post a different version from his almost lost TV show, for the sake of completeness, if you will.
Best version of this song belongs to Scott Walker. ❤❤❤

I agree with you. The depth and sincerity in his voice is quite unique. I appreciate it more now than ‘back in the day’.

What a voice.God given.❤

They were. I was lucky enough to see him in concert a few times in the sixties with the Walker brothers. Awesome. RIP.dear Scott.💔 and john 💔
I saw Scott in concert once I was only about 12 years old . I’ve never forgotten it he was brilliant ❤️
Loved this man superb voice got most of his songs I miss him RIP 🙏
best I've heard
Immaculate phrasing & timing, and that unforgettable timbre...slightly reminiscent of Vic Damone.

Posiblemente la canción de amor más bella que se ha escrito. Jacques Brel y Scott Walker, me roban el corazón.
Thank you so much for this, anything else from his tv show would be very much appreciated.
A CD came out recently featuring songs from his TV show. The sound quality wasn't that great but I was glad to have it.
@Christina Huie
Thanks for the info, I will have a look for it.
Some Philistine twit at the BBC wiped his tv shows, luckily there are some sound tracks.
Gone away too soon...
Beautiful! I also highly recommend Dusty Springfield's version.

But his final soundtracks are fantastic.

Any idea who arranged the orchestration? Stands up very well in the light of Wally Stott's incredible work for Scott.
@Gordon Hastie
I quite sure that it was Peter Knight who arranged the orchestrations for all of Scott’s tv series. Peter Knight was just as good as Angela Morley in my view.
The original French lyric is smouldering compared to this English version. Truth.
itchy kernel of sad deer in the rut...
Scott added so much to a song!
guidofski, did you know Scott?
I'm afraid not, jungastein. But I often wonder what it would feel like to be in the presence of such greatness.
and a wonderful woman Angela Merkel
Worst version of this track goes to Joaquin phoenix as the joker unfortunately 🤡
I'd rather play it on my own collection of Scott songs. Sound quality was awful here.
