As an American transplanted into France, and needing to therefore learn the language, I can't help but comment here just how impactful this one song was in my (albeit, very slow) development of understanding French. Brel's performance of this song alone (especially in the way this particular video is a still frame capturing his head) transmits absolute desperation so clearly, that even in not understanding one word - you still get a sense of what's going on. But once one fully grasps the gorgeously sad lyrics to match the performance, you can now see why this man is an absolute legend in the world of francophone music, and I thank performers like him, Georges Brassens, Charles Trenet, Edith Piaf, and so many others during and after their era for immersing me into such a rich and vibrant language and culture through gorgeous lyrics and performances.

As a french speaker (quebecer) the first time i saw this, i cried the whole shit out of me. Im a man who dont cry a lot, even back in the day i saw that for the first time. But it was just to much. I have known this song for about 35 years, sung by Maysa Matarazzo, a Brazilian singer. When I heard this performance by Jacques Brel for the first time, I wrote an entire chapter of a book based on it. The book is a story, and the song serves as the inspiration for what happens in the story.

I'm not a French speaker either, and I very much adore Jacques Brel (I must admit to a slight advantage in that my mother's mother tongue is French, as was my grandparents', so I am at least very familiar with the sound). He was indeed an extraordinary performer. There's a particular performance of this (magnificent) song that stuck in my mind for how beautifully (and unconventionally) he maintained a line from the chorus to the beginning of a verse, and the contrast with this version just helps to accentuate the unique and skillful way he utilizes his phrasing, and how in control he was of his "toolkit." It really is extraordinary, listening to him perform different versions of the same song and seeing what he does differently each time. I highly recommend it.

Thank you for this. I couldn't agree more. It's not easy to make a song feel like an intimate scene. But he does it so naturally. Of course, it probably helps that he wrote it too so he kind of understands the bones of the song in a unique way. What I find so amazing about this performance is the way joy runs through this very very sad song. In his face. And this feels like a key to making this sort of "loss" song shine. I had the experience of accompanying in a local theater production of "Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well.......", a revue of his music. There is just a sublime "French-ness" to his melodies and his singing. So happy to find him on a reaction channel - you nailed it! Thank you for sharing!
i can't understand how you can talk about vocal performance when the text by itself doesn't need to be sung, it carry a load of poetry, its more expression than singing and here Brel only bring it to life..
Jacques and Scott Walker's versions are so amazing in their own way. So glad Scott Walker brought these songs to an English speaking audience. You can tell he tried to be true to the originals whilst still making them Scott Walker song. Amazing. Sinatra also recorded a version, but was one of the rare occasions where Sinatra didn't quite reach the emotional resonance of the song.
Although there are some beautiful versions out there, the lyric "If you go away" isn't as much a punch in the gut as "Ne me quitte pas". In contrast, I think "Next" works better than "Au suivant".
When you brought up Lara Fabian That was the Cherry on an already very well made and tasty cake. Both in their own right knows how to deliver THE Lyrics , The words curled and molded within the notes which they are telling you about body and soul combined. Artists of another level bringing sens, emotions and often charms to envelop one’s ears, eyes and heart in a cocoon of feelings while making the listener to discover better who he/she truly is as a person. That doesn't make much sense because he's from Belgium. I think that you lose much if you aren't francophone and if you don't have a high level of French, that's because you lose the richness of the lyrics and the way and the intensity how Brel delivers those lyrics,in a way that the interpreter, the music and the lyrics become a raw unity
I'm not French, but I do think understanding the language enhances the song. But his genius is such that you don't have to understand French to feel the begging and hope and resignation in his voice. Because these are "des mots insensés" that we can nevertheless understand on a very deep, emotional level.
Born and raised in Belgium in the 60s I guess my mom loved him almost as much as us kids - took me a while to understand and yes (late) mom you were right!
If you don't speak fluent French you will miss most of the genius of Brel songs. How this man wove text and music together, no one in Western culture comes even close to that.

I've been listening to Brel for almost 55 years (started as a toddler) and every day, still at this very moment) I discover new features of him. He was (and still is) by far the best performer ever, all languages confused, as he was 100% genuine. That's why he just quit performing early on (in 1969 I believe) ; he left his public in unbelief as he just told 'I quit. I havee nothing more to say', and he left the scene. he came back occasionaly like with his unbelievable musical Don QUICHOTTE and severel recordings, but he never ever returned on the scene. Very few non Belgians know, but Brel was FLEMISH, so he spoke Dutch in the first place, but as he grew up in Brussels, he was bilingual end of course, once he left to sing in Paris, FRENCH became the language of his choice, although he rcorded a few songs in Dutch (the French version of 'MArieke' contains several Dutch phrases!). I'm so sad I never attended a concerts (but again, by the time he left, I was only 6!). His music and songs are never outdated. What i also like are his double, triple and sometimes even quadruple layers and calembours he uses in words and sentences. there is no second one... As to Lara Fabian, yes she is Belgian to and NO it's not a cultural thing... But being a singer song writer and occasional performr myself (hobbtwise) I presume that it's Brel and Fabian's way of reacting AGAINST the dominant culture in Belgium of being humble, modest and not stir up things. I'm half Italian and lived in seeveral countries, so I definitely know that my Belgian part is like that, luckily my Italian side allows me to rebel against this kind of shiness...Brel sang it beautifully in 'LES FLAMANDES' ... Belgians like to be unseen, invisible... Anyway, Great video. I especially liked the synchronisation between the mimics of Brel and The Vocalyst.... So even though she doesn't understand Feench, she definitely understood the song. Only possiblee with an universal artist like Brel. touching anyway
Jacques was from Belgium and I am French so I understand the lyrics of his song. Above all I can (as you may as well) feel the emotions that he can transfer through his lyrics, voice tone, body language, large (huge) hands... I would have loved to meet him in a cabaret on a just a night bar because he is famous for his sense of humor, and for always taking notes on his little notebook. About this "song analysis" : to my opinion, the Great Jacques did not mentalize neither brain up this piece of art, he just sang from his heart as always. I'm not a French speaker either, and I very much adore Jacques Brel (I must admit to a slight advantage in that my mother's mother tongue is French, as was my grandparents', so I am at least very familiar with the sound).
He was indeed an extraordinary performer. There's a particular performance of this (magnificent) song that stuck in my mind for how beautifully (and unconventionally) he maintained a line from the chorus to the beginning of a verse, and the contrast with this version just helps to accentuate the unique and skillful way he utilizes his phrasing, and how in control he was of his "toolkit." It really is extraordinary, listening to him perform different versions of the same song and seeing what he does differently each time. I highly recommend it.

I had one year of French in high school, my senior year. It was 1978/1979. My French teacher brought in a record, and played a song for us. It was Jacques Brel and the song was called Ne me quitte pas. I never forgot! ...loved it.
Jacques Brel was belgian but nonetheless the Godfather of The French Song, he was a great inspiration for Lara Fabian who considers "Voir un ami pleurer" as the greatest french song. Her rendition of that song in her 2003 concert "En toute intimité" is a pure gem...

The '66 live version of Ce Gens la - with English subtitles - is one of my favourite pieces of Brel footage. By that time, as for this performance, he must have been aware that he was a genius. His command of language melody and ability to convey emotion with his voice, face and body is matchless. The wit of Bonbons, the ambiguity of Regard Bien Petit, the beauty of Il Niege... he had it all
Oh yes, “Regarde bien petit” part of his musical is also deep and reveling about mankind in the last stroke of the song. Such a drop in your guts , dang!

Of course, it probably helps that he wrote it too so he kind of understands the bones of the song in a unique way. What I find so amazing about this performance is the way joy runs through this very very sad song. In his face. And this feels like a key to making this sort of "loss" song shine. Jacques and Scott Walker's versions are so amazing in their own way. So glad Scott Walker brought these songs to an English speaking audience. You can tell he tried to be true to the originals whilst still making them Scott Walker song. Amazing. Sinatra also recorded a version, but was one of the rare occasions where Sinatra didn't quite reach the emotional resonance of the song.
Although there are some beautiful versions out there, the lyric "If you go away" isn't as much a punch in the gut as "Ne me quitte pas". In contrast, I think "Next" works better than "Au suivant".
When you brought up Lara Fabian That was the Cherry on an already very well made and tasty cake. Both in their own right knows how to deliver THE Lyrics , The words curled and molded within the notes which they are telling you about body and soul combined.

That doesn't make much sense because he's from Belgium. I think that you lose much if you aren't francophone and if you don't have a high level of French, that's because you lose the richness of the lyrics and the way and the intensity how Brel delivers those lyrics,in a way that the interpreter, the music and the lyrics become a raw unity
I'm not French, but I do think understanding the language enhances the song.
But his genius is such that you don't have to understand French to feel the begging and hope and resignation in his voice.
Because these are "des mots insensés" that we can nevertheless understand on a very deep, emotional level.

If you don't speak fluent French you will miss most of the genius of Brel songs. How this man wove text and music together, no one in Western culture comes even close to that.

I've been listening to Brel for almost 55 years (started as a toddler) and every day, still at this very moment) I discover new features of him. He was (and still is) by far the best performer ever, all languages confused, as he was 100% genuine. That's why he just quit performing early on (in 1969 I believe) ; he left his public in unbelief as he just told 'I quit. I havee nothing more to say', and he left the scene. he came back occasionaly like with his unbelievable musical Don QUICHOTTE and severel recordings, but he never ever returned on the scene.
Very few non Belgians know, but Brel was FLEMISH, so he spoke Dutch in the first place, but as he grew up in Brussels, he was bilingual end of course, once he left to sing in Paris, FRENCH became the language of his choice, although he rcorded a few songs in Dutch (the French version of 'MArieke' contains several Dutch phrases!).
I'm so sad I never attended a concerts (but again, by the time he left, I was only 6!). His music and songs are never outdated.
What i also like are his double, triple and sometimes even quadruple layers and calembours he uses in words and sentences. there is no second one...
As to Lara Fabian, yes she is Belgian to and NO it's not a cultural thing... But being a singer song writer and occasional performr myself (hobbtwise) I presume that it's Brel and Fabian's way of reacting AGAINST the dominant culture in Belgium of being humble, modest and not stir up things. I'm half Italian and lived in seeveral countries, so I definitely know that my Belgian part is like that, luckily my Italian side allows me to rebel against this kind of shiness...Brel sang it beautifully in 'LES FLAMANDES' ...

Jacques was from Belgium and I am French so I understand the lyrics of his song. Above all I can (as you may as well) feel the emotions that he can transfer through his lyrics, voice tone, body language, large (huge) hands... I would have loved to meet him in a cabaret on a just a night bar because he is famous for his sense of humor, and for always taking notes on his little notebook.
About this "song analysis" : to my opinion, the Great Jacques did not mentalize neither brain up this piece of art, he just sang from his heart as always.
