That’s a poem by Kemal Burkay, the translation does not really do justice but here it is: Smile, come on smile So the clouds disperse. Or how will I be renewed Come on, smile Maybe a movie comes to town. Maybe they'll write about a beautiful forest The season changes and becomes a Mediterranean climate, (if you) smile Suppose that I'm hungry And at odds with my mother The whole city is cross with me I don't even have a cat, do you understand? Come on, smile I had reeds, I had rivers I had pebbles But you're different, do you understand? Smile
This is not the kind of music I heard growing up on Long Island but it is so easy to listen to and in fact very tranquil. I can tell that she's singing a story to us even without knowing the language. Nicely done review Bethany as always.🎤🎶
Hi, Bethany. Here is the native Turkish speaker. I tried to translate the lyrics too. I hope I didn't mess it up too much. As you may appreciate, to reflect the same emotions is really hard in translations :) Gülümse ( Smile ) Smile, Come on smile to clear the clouds Otherwise, how can I refresh? Come on smile Maybe a movie comes to the town and there is a beautiful forest in the subtitles Climate change becomes Mediterranean Smile Suppose I am hungry, angry with my mother The whole town is angry with me I don't even have a cat, do you understand? Come on smile Maybe a movie comes to the town and there is a beautiful forest in it Climate change becomes Mediterranean Smile Smile, Come on smile to clear the clouds Otherwise, how can I refresh? Come on smile I had reeds, I had rivers Pebbles, I had But you are different, do you understand Different Suppose I am hungry, angry with my mother The whole town is angry with me I don't even have a cat, do you understand? Come on smile
The reason why the voices of many Turkish singers, like Sezen Aksu, feel so enchanting is actually rooted in the structure of traditional Turkish music. Western music has evolved quite differently from Turkish music. After the dominance of the church in Europe, music began to develop under religious control. It was built on the harmonies of church choirs and the alignment of the instruments within these choirs. Western composers, often working with orchestras, envisioned music with precise orchestrations. Therefore, in Western music, sounds and frequencies are more defined and evenly distributed across instruments. This allows each voice to be distinct and comprehensible in polyphonic music, leading to a system that divides sounds into seven tones. In contrast, traditional Turkish music divides sounds into nine tones. For thousands of years, from the five-stringed folk instruments of Turkistan to the “Musiki” music of the Ottoman era, our music has been structured this way. Western music reduces and stabilizes tones to enable ensemble compositions, minimizing intervals for ease of composition. But Turkish music moves freely. To paint a picture, Western music is like swimming in calm seas, while Turkish music is like diving deep into an ocean to retrieve pearls. Today, many Turkish singers still embody this freedom in their voices, often without formal training, because they are born into this musical culture. For example, the ezan (call to prayer), heard five times daily, is recited in five different “makam” (musical modes). Even someone who knows nothing about music is familiar with these sounds through the ezan, traditional songs on the radio, or spiritual music on religious occasions, creating an innate familiarity. In Turkey, there’s no need to explain the “si koma” modulation in the “Uşak” makam to any singer; they simply can do it. However, a person from the West would need to invest significant time to understand and perform such a sound.
Greetings from Turkey. The nickname "Sezen Aksu" is a little sparrow, but she is the queen of pop music in Turkey and each of her songs makes you experience a very different emotional intensity when you listen to them. Your comments are very accurate, thank you.
Amazing lyrics, fantastic vocal performance and, the venue. Ephesus amphitheater dates back to 300 BC and the ancient city which you can still visit most part of it dates back to 550 BC. That region was inhabited starting from 6000 BC!!!!!!!! I always had an issue(and still) with Turkish modern music. Fantastic vocal performances, deep lyrics but instrumentality it is weak. I often recall it as poems with some background "tunes". A line from this song became a part of Turkish slang also. "I even don't have a cat, do you understand me? How can I smile?" When we wanted to say that we feel blue, we used to say "I don't even have a cat!".
Hi Beth, great to see your reaction to “Queen of Turkish music”, Sezen 🙏🏻 they put you in a very difficult task, since Sezen is a grandmaster of “interpretations” of lyrics and her songs are many-levels deep in meaning. Loved your effort and reaction although you are not native Turkish speaking ;) in your patreon group, I suggested the following song already and I think it might be a perfect follow-up (with Sertab Erener). You will see her great, perfect strong voice in that song I believe. Hello from Turkiye 😉🙏🏻🧿 ruclips.net/video/wIdB7LZKX3A/видео.htmlsi=6uAZsZ1dBmwamb6h
Sezen Aksu 1984 You Should React to the Song You Cry is the song she released in her most magnificent period. (note: it's impossible not to enjoy it if you listen to it😉)
Beautiful, absolutely stunning. I was actually moved to tears with the duet at the end. Though I don’t have any particular song recommendations, I’ve heard that Fairuz is an iconic singer in the Arab world, if you’d be interested in trying something in Arabic. I always love your videos, thank you!
It would be so cool if you could do a video about the absolutely iconic Simon and Garfunkel performance of Bridge Over Trouble Water in Central Park 1981 :) Art Garfunkel definitely delivered one of the best vocal performances ever!
Have you heard of the RUclips channel called Ten Second Songs? This guy sings different songs while impersonating famous singer’s voices. He’s incredible! You should definitely break down one of his videos. 😊
It is one of the classic and still listened to songs that Sezen Aksu released in 1991 when she was 37. However, I cannot understand how it would be healthy to ask you to comment on this with a live concert recording when Sezen is over 60 years old and has lost much of her breath and vocal power. Because this performance is the kind of performance that can only be enjoyed by Turks who know the history of the song and the artist. Similar examples have occurred before. I think there is a serious problem with Turkish song requests on this channel. I think that the purpose of the channel is not well understood by the viewers and that emotionally intense songs are recommended instead of songs that are successful in terms of musical quality or technique.
Remember when I recommended you Kenan Dogulu songs and sent you a few links on one of my comments ? Well, if you consider that Sezen Aksu is a queen, all remaining musicians are her princes 🙂 By the way, the one playing the keyboard on this video is Ozan Dogulu, Kenan’s big bro.. 😉
Bethany, I believe you’ve done some pieces in Spanish, such as Luis Miguel and Juan Gabriel, but have you ever considered analyzing a performance by Rocio Durcal? She actually did quite a few performances with Juan Gabriel, and she’s widely considered one of the all-time great performers in the Spanish-speaking world.
Halloween is coming soon. Because of this would you react to the music video of Epica - The Ghost in me (Danse Macabre), an metal adaptation of the French composer Saint-Saëns’ composition.
Sezen Aksu is one of the iconic names of Turkish music. He is one of the rare artists who writes lyrics as well as singing and thus gives lyrics to many Turkish singers. His nickname is little sparrow
I suggest you to watch; Dilek Türkan Ft. Seyyah - Yüksek Yüksek Tepeler Dilek Türkan - Gamzedeyim Deva bulmam Ne Feryat Edersin - Dilek Türkan & Tayfun Guttstadt Dilek Türkan Ft. Remziye Öztürkçe & Serdar Aslan - Aman Bre Deryalar Dilek Türkan Ft. Seyyah - Manastır Türküsü
@The Vocalyst Hi Bethany, it's been almost two years since my previous request. May I suggest Dianne van Giersbergen feat. Marcela Bovio - Flameborn ? Pleas keep up the great reaction-analysis!!! (Dianne is not related to Anneke. Yet there are less than 400 people in the world with that name) ruclips.net/video/IdjG-1ONQLE/видео.htmlsi=Ovom-koiq5aGDG83
Thank you for this nice reaction video! I would like to recommend a very special artist - Alim Qasimov. His music is characterized by his vocal improvisation and represents a move away from the traditional style of mugham. He was awarded the International Music Council-UNESCO Music Prize in 1999. According to The New York Times, "Qasimov is simply one of the greatest singers alive, with a searing spontaneity that conjures passion and devotion, contemplation and incantation. Here is one of my most favorite performances by him live at Morgenland Festival Osnabrueck 2019. Hope you will enjoy: ruclips.net/video/cHkXM-i_1MU/видео.html
hello, i didn't watch this video because this is not my music at all, BUT oh do i have a voice for you, The band is called Type o negative, The singer, may he rest in peace, was Peter Steele, real name Peter Thomas Ratajczyk, he was 2.3 meters high, he was left handed, taught himself to play the right handed bass, i recommend to start this type o negative journey with the song Anesthesia

Simply beautiful, so much heart and soul, and I loved the ending with the two singing together!
Great reaction, Bethany! This is very different from the music I, as an American, usually listen to. However it is very beautiful and soothing..
Thank you very much ! She is GOAT of Turkish pop music
They turned the forty-year-old little sparrow into a goat 😂
She's my favorite singer maybe for 35 years!
Kız Türk müziklerine hiç girişmeden önce ne kadar hayat dolu parlak yüzlü enerjikti bizim müziklerden sonra çöktü 🤦🏻♂️

Thank you for this lovely reaction. Turkish being a tonal language makes it ultimately musical. Her song Git is simply phenomenal.
