Scott Walker - Free Again

- Unreleased song. English version of "Non... C'est Rien", written by Michel Jourdan and Armand Canfora with English words by Robert Colby. Made famous by Barbra Streisand in 1966, this was most likely recorded around 1967/68. Although the production seems to lack the finishing touches, it's a shame he never released it.

Hi G, I think the people of my age were so lucky to have Scott’s voice from the start to the end. And to have met him, seen him on stage from 14 , love you Scott we will meet again in the stars. Love forever Arlene xxxxxxxxx ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Never heard this song before it’s outstanding as per usual. Dear Scott is there nothing you can’t sing. I’m full of goose bumps listening to your voice and interpretation. Wow just wow. Love Arlene xxxxx ❤
I don't know why this song has never been released, it's one of his best ever
The ominous accompaniment, the psychodramaof it and his wonderful voice.
There must be dozens of versions of this song but how can any one top this? A perfect song by a perfect voice of a perfect singer. Oh, Scott, Scott, Scott, take a rest from hearing 21, 21, 21, and give us more ot this. You were given a gift only a chosen few were given!!
What a voice. I agree it would be hard to hear a better version
❤x
Even on the very first hearing, its clear that Scott's interpretation crushes Streisand's into oblivion, His voice is perfectly suited to the lyrics and the few wobbly vocal bits only enhance its power and sincerity. Absolutely Effing Glorious!
Perfect, thanx G, in pain today just what I need t make me feel better. Love you Scott always, Arlene ❤xxxxxxx
As the ABBA song goes thank you for the music and what beautiful music
Beautiful man beautiful voice ❤️ RIP Scott 💔 Now you’re free 😢

I’m crying now G I love Scott so much Arlene xxxxxx
Thank. For this song G, his voice was so gentle yet powerful Scott could just sing anything I love him ❤ rip my darling Scott, Arlene xx
What a gorgeous voice. I'd never heard it before. I love both Scott and Barbra's versions. Please don't compare or compete the two. Both are exceptional.
Wow, the verse sections have a late day Scott vibe to them. Ominous.
Its sooo goood though, really conjures up wintery dark images of lost love and self doubt, it's not only the lyrics and wonderful arrangement, its his voice. It seems to almost crack in places, like he was almost experiencing the pain at the time of recording ! Sooo bleak but beautiful !
THissssssss is sooooooooooooooooo bloooody goood !!! He makes me wanna give up writing cos he's done it all before me, and I can't better this !!! How could this not be released, this is one of the best songs I've heard him sing !!
Thanks again G, I wonder sometimes if Scott is watching his old fans, if he is he will know how many of us are distressed as he has left us but we should b grateful he has left us with his unbelievable voice. Love and thanks Arlene xxxxxxx ❤
INCREDIBLE !
Thanx G, this is fabulous just great in every way. I love Scott so much his voice is so strong and magical. 😍 love u Scott Arlene from England xxxxxxxxxx
I think Barbra and Scott should have done this as a duet! WOW!
This is great not a very easy song to sing love it.rip Scott walker 💔💔
I've only started listening to Scott again 6 months after his passing .couldn't bring myself to before.first track I played "hills of yesterday". by the way "free again"is insanely good.
Jim Brown Enjoy the journey of this musical Genius 👏
That first section, with those very troubled violins, sounds like Scott was already moving away from his early material. When he returns to it again it's like Norman Bates is coming to town. The "Free again" sections are so upbeat, it's an eerie juxtaposition. Good Scott, crazy Scott, good Scott, crazy Scott. It's confusing... but I must say that Scott's delivery is great.
Noe Berengena, I agree, Scott Walker's "Free Again" is a masterful commercial recording. Walker's vocals coupled with the musical arrangement and recording of individual musical sections is marvellous. And yes, the two melodies that counter each other are very clever; suggesting as they do jubilation in non-attachment, quickly followed by a slow awareness of loneliness and self deception.
Moreover, to my ears the downbeat notes that signal doubt are very reminiscent of Lionel Bart's, "As Long As He Needs Me" from "Oliver". The interesting thing about this similarity is that when the character Nancy sings of an undying love for her boyfriend, Bill Sikes, it has the poignancy of being misplaced devotion, or at least a love that will not be returned.
Oh G I love this song and it suits Scott’s voice and the photos are wonderful, thank you so much love Arlene xxxxx😊
This doesn't require belting out but something more subtle. I reiterate my earlier conviction that SW's version is more compelling than Streisand's. I was very familiar with BS's 60s recording but hearing Scott's was a revelation. The protagonist is supposedly a broken soul, but Streisand, in the name of irony, comes across as much too confident, too defiant. Scott, on the other hand, is vulnerable and conveys the pain of the lyrics much more effectively. And his strings! I vote Scott.
Let's face it NO-ONE does anything better than Scott !
この曲を ジェフリーバトルさんが フィギュアスケートで 滑っていました。 スコットの声と バトルさんの滑りが素晴らしく 泣きそうになりました。
Hi G, doesn’t Scott place an abundance of feeling in everything he sings it just gives me goose bumps the level to which his voice can reach. Love him so much Arlene xx 💋
What a voice.......
I really like Scott's version.
I didnt know this existed. I like how it shifts moods. Goes from intense to exuberant.i could see this song on Scott 3. Has the "Its Raining Again vibe"...the mood shift reminds me of Plastic Palace People
@bstedu Thats my point, Striesand has great vocals, but Scott really penetrates the lyric an turns it from a belt it out show tune to soething far more dark an melancholy. Some people would disagree, but then they they miss the point of Scott walker and his unique talent !
OMG that intro killed me.
Perfect lips, beautiful man love Arlene xxxxxx
Lol Stuart, I've never seen you this excited before! Yes, this is fabulous and why it wasn't released it's a mystery - but please don't give up writing! :D
You're right. It is I who should take a rest from hearing 21, 21, 21 and I had. What drew me to this boy was the voice the first time I heard him. So now I have the recordings of ALL his songs (even 21, 21, 21). Lala has recorded me listening to Free Again 115 times and IF 65 times. So I guess I am a passionate "old" Scott fan and "just" an admirer of the "new" Scott. But we each have our own favorite Scott and we could get wistfully, unrealistically nostalgic listening to his old ones.
He didn't release this ? Unbelievable.
Ever free
oh man this is super.
Ah, Guidofski, you have done it again. another hidden gem that you have brought to light. If I see Scott this fall, yr name will come up. Mahaatman.
If you like this, try the top quality, Best of Both World's, The Bridge and Angelica.
Also I get along without you very well and who will take my place bot very goodxx

13 July 2020 Free Again I've never heard this before. Amazing. What a waste of Scott's silky smooth bass vocal. Keith Stevenson
And JOSS BASELLI for the MUSIC well known as JO BASILE in the US ...

Oh wow - wonderfully put! :)
So they are, hehe! Thanks! :))
"take a rest from hearing 21, 21, 21" hahaha, I had to laugh. Yes, this is a galaxy away from "Farmer in the City"... Thanks again, emily! :)
those strings at the beginning are very "The Drift - ey" - get what i mean? lol.x
Gellert
Thats why people go to future
My mother says he sounds like Dean Martin, who agrees?
"heartbreak made sound" - P-E-R-F-E-C-T.
it was a french song at first Non c'est rien by Jaqueline dano
I have always thought it's a song for female singers.... but now....
A friend bought all of Scott's rare and unreleased tracks on the Internet and sent them to me (I'll send you a more detailed message, since I'm not allowed to advertise here!)
The wondér he sañg àbout véry deep sóngs in his way that he súng with real depth màybe gay and a true heart thanxs to him wíll always remember x
By the way, where did you get this track from, I can't find it anywhere ??? Thanks x
Do you really think Streisand does this better? I agree with you about the superior orchestration (on the Walker version) but I would also suggest that Scott shows a certain restraint (morbid subtlety?) in his delivery that adds a little more depth than we hear in Barbara's rendition.
@bstedu,
There was a (March '24) discussion here about this but I can't find it back.
The pros in Barbra Streisand's version are that she gives a very powerful performance and she had the very romantic backing of, no less, Michel Legrand.
Scott's verson is more introvert. No vocal belting out. His arranger offered a more moody background, with echos of impressionionism. What you hear in more Scott recordings. The orchestra is also less tidier than Legrand's.
I understand that Scott's recording was never refined, had there been plans to release it as a single, it probably would have.
Is Scott's rendention less emotional than Barbara's? I don't hink so. Actually, I like both versions. And Vicky Leandros' version I dont care for. I wouldn't even like it had Shirley Bassy done it-- and I'm a great fan of her.
anybody knows an instrumental versión. i ll be searching time ago and i cant find if somebody get share please. from Perú South America ill be waiting.
You can vote. ?
@dedeurs "Off topic: does anyone know where to find a list of all the titles he ever sang in his tv shows?" Check your messages. :)
Well he was a true master of singing. Añd vocally blows striesañd of the stage màny of her early showbiz songs were crap where as scotts were sincere àñd trúthful màinly therz no biz like show biz striesand maybe you reàlised that and yóur american mid class audience liked your style....
ALLAH wishes
@dedeurs As much as I love Scott Walker, I agree the song suits Streisand's style better. Scott was a perfectionist and I'm sure he (and perhaps the producing team) was not happy with the end result either. More than likely the reason why this was not released.
I agree.
Well said.
I think they probably thought the major key change chorus was too cheesy. Which it definitely is, whoever's singing it. But these verses - vocal and arrangement - are perfection.
Are you manipulated?
Ayatollah
STREISAND owns this song! It's all hers.
Nice try, but the arrangement is out of kilter with Scott's delivery. It's like a battle, and Scott doesn't come out on top!
Strident's version is too hysterical and full of ego. She sounds like she needs a slap.
Norty :- ))
I may not be thrilled with babs at the moment but I sure do hope you aren't as violent and hateful as this comment makes you sound.
See United Statea od united States , more tban german trump
@dedeurs Streisands better .... ITHINK NOT :P NOOO NOO NOOOOOO !!!
AD 2024: I listened again, and yes-- Barbra sings it with much more emotion. She is really 'freeing' herself. Scott did his best (I assume), but he was vocally often more sophisticated than emotional.
Barb's plus is also that she had the great, great Michel Legrand for arranger.😁
It's what tomkent (and also kareninalabama wrote: The production of Scott's rendition leaves something to be desired.
Prefer the Streisand version. She's the master.
billyboylb Apples and Grapefruits mate.
They are both 👍. Don't compare them.💕💕
This version really stinks.....crappy voice. monotoneous music.
what? dark shadows?
Oh please.....I can't even let him finish my stomach is turning.
Hope you found your bromo-seltzer, buddy.
Dear Mr. Leo M. You probably prefer a fatty & insulting McDonald's burger to a highly refined and exquisit haute cuisine meal. No wonder you're stomach turns its back on you....
There are some very rude comments out there for such a wonderful singer. Rip.Scott 💔
Awful. I'll stick with Streisand's version. No one can top Barbra.
What a pointlessly bizarre orchestral arrangement! Sounds like the Twilight Zone. And sadly, this man's vibrato (wobble, really) is so wide sometimes that it takes him off pitch. But to each, his own, I guess. Sorry, but I prefer the bitter sarcasm in Streisand's version; I think she interprets the English lyrics exactly as they would be if they were spoken.
Perfect arrangement. Perfect vibrato. Perfect performance. Different strokes...
