I think he was so underrated. The falsetto was there and I loved it. I l loved all his songs, esp. If I didn’t have a dime…and so many others…often the last song played at the high school dances.
I always thought this was one of the saddest songs I'd ever heard. Without the magic of Gene Pitney's voice, this song wouldn't have near the impact that it does.
Gene's voice pretty much added magic to every song he ever recorded--totally unique, although I certainly thought Los Bravos' "Black is Black" was a hot new Pitney record when I first heard it. PJ Proby does a pretty cool Pitney impersonation every now and then but the original is still the greatest.
He was termed the Voice of Heartbreak, and yet he was so much more. Saw him live here in Australia 3 times; such a great singer, such a gentleman. A true great.
The string section always reminded me of the Bee Gees "Massachusetts." At one time I have over 30 of Gene's albums, but whittled them down to a hard core 15. This is certainly a song that should have been a hit in 1968. Much better than the rather frantic "She's A Heartbreaker." Gene was certainly one of the greatest male vocalists of the 60's, along with Roy Orbison and Del Shannon.
@@Marcel_Audubon its easy for me to say that about my idol Steve marriott been a fan my whole lifetime yet he died very much when I was born in 1991..absolute legend never will be another.. humble pie the small faces rod Stewart ruined the faces vs Steve...
Sometimes in the Middle Classes Maslows Hierarchy gets tipped on its head, the child scores well on things near the top like self actualisation, wealth respect, yet the basic needs of love and belonging are forgotten, this song is one of the great social commentary songs that was ever written
I wrote a poem in 1981 which has similar sentiments but mine was about a woman leaving her uncaring husband on the morning train Dawn Departure (End of Love) i still rate that poem one of my best
I always thought this song was about a girl who got pregnant out of wedlock and she was hidden away 'somewhere in the country' until the baby was born to save the family disgrace. Can anyone elaborate?
That is what it's about ... different times. Nobody goes to Aunt Norah's house anymore, they just go into labor during study hall. I was never sure if the singer was supposed to be the father or just a casual observer.
That's what most of us thought. And I actually had an Auntie Nora who lived in a little country village; how I got my leg pulled whenever I went to spend a week or two there!!
Thank you so much for finally putting me right. I always thought like you that it was a bout a young lady getting pregnant but was never to sure. Like most songs I sing a long but Very rarely listen. If that Makes sense. Stay safe in these mad times & thanks. 🇬🇧28/9/20
Hat tolle Songs gesungen, verbinden viel mit meiner Jugendzeit. Ist viel zu früh verstorben
I'm 37 and my Parents would listen to Gene Pitney and I just kind of grew up with his music. He has a brilliant voice.

My mum was a huge fan Gene, had his albums, seen him in concert when possible, when mum passed, Gene passed a week later.
We saw Gene in Worthing a week before he died. He looked very ill, but sounded as fantastic as ever. Legend.❤
Tony Blackburn has said several times on his radio show that he was a gentleman.

one word !!!!!brilliant!!!!!!!!!
Fabulous,Fabulous, Fabulous.
One of Gene's very best. Up there with 24 Sycamore and I'm Gonna Be Strong-which was played at Gene's funeral service.
Genes röst är så full av vemod, så sårbar och samtidigt så kraftfull.
Jag älskar detta.
