Gene was great!!!!! His pop hits were well crafted , well produced and he posessed a powerful voice.....so unique! He also rode the wave of the British Invasion and very popular in Italy ....this added to Gene Pitneys global appeal!!!! This is one guy that left us too soon....he's loved and missed by millions of fans!
One of the best singers i've ever heard, i had the pleasure of meeting the great man in the early 90's in Dublin not only a fabulous singer but a true Gent too R.I.P
I've oftened spoke him for many years ago. And oftened had contact only by mail. In 1996 I performed his song I'm gonna be strong for the Dutch television Soundmixshow. And he was very pleased about it. Gene was a very beautifull and warm person. And all his fans knows that. he made so many beautyfull songs. Performed them. And wrote hits for others. Ricky Nelson ( Hello Mary Lou)...Roy Orbison ( Todays teardrops) , The Shirless ( He's a rebel) and so many ,many more. Today I remember his words when he said to my: Erik, you have so many wonderfull things in life...So ..go for it. And I'm remebering Gene Francis Pitney as a very warm and personal man.
Gene, thank you for a lifetime of wonderful hits.."If I didn't have a dime", "Not responsible"..the list stretches into the ages. May you rest in Golden Hits heaven..
WOW, who else is listening in right now in Nov 2024 great then you and i got great taste in gene's soulful voice ENJOY & thanks for the excellent upload 💯👍🎵🎶
I met Gene Pitney, I got to know him and parts of him that no one knew about him strong with voice and his heart was so rare that you couldn't help not falling in love with him as I did , on a napkin ( please forgive me I dident mean to scare you sometimes Iam dumb only trying to protect you from hurting yourself Ray he was forgiven) From our feelings for each other from the very beginning within without what ever time and life will bring my love Gene Pitney , He was the best .close to my heart always M.LM
We saw Gene Pitney several times in Australia ..including the last tour prior to his death.he was a true professional with such a unique voice thanks for the memories that remain every time I hear your music ..
Never took any notice of the man........then, last week I saw a YT video of him singing "Something's got a hold of my heart" and swear to god , I can't stop playing him. I'm in my 60's and have heard a few tunes, but that man is absolutely amazing. God rest his soul.
What an unpretentious clip and singer. Thank you Gene and your producers for bringing your voice to the world. You've left us with so many golden oldies (If I didn't have a dime!..) Rest in peace Gene and join the company of singer/ writer saints on high..
Thankyou for the great uploads . Am English 64 and always liked Gene Pitney. Saw him a few times in the sixties . Bournemouth Winter Gardens Comes to mind. Long gone! There seemed to be more modesty amongst great stars in those days.
Top song by a quality singer. Listened to an album of his greatest hits by Ktel I think from around 1977/78. Was a boy then still listening now some 40+ years later. He was one of my mum's favourite singers and is still one of mine.
my dad was a fan I grew up listening to these great artists gene's voice was so distinctive it really makes your spine tingle !! best male singer of his generation ? I think an argument could be made for that 😀
My grandfather Bill had Gene Pitney's greatest hits and this song was in it, he used to play the album every Sunday while my family would prepare the Sunday dinner.
A multi-talented artist writing unique lyrics with a voice so rich in emotional tones... It's true that "... whenever we hear superb music we must listen; then we will forget all inferior music." - Abdu’l-Baha, Baha'i Faith
On this day in 1966 {June 23rd} Gene Pitney performed "Backstage" on the ABC-TV program 'Where the Action Is'... Eighteen days earlier {June 5th} was its last day on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; it had peaked at #25 {for 1 week} on May 22nd, 1966 and spent 8 weeks on the chart... On June 6th, 1966 it reached #2 {for 1 week} on the Canadian Kennedy Weekly Singles chart; the week it was at #2, the #1 record was "When A Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge... Between 1961 and 1969 he had twenty-three Top 100 records; four made the Top 10 with "Only Love Can Break a Heart" being his biggest hit, it peaked at #2* {for 1 week} on October 28th, 1962... Gene Francis Alan Pitney passed away on April 5th, 2006 at the age of 66... May he R.I.P. * The week that "Only Love Can Break a Heart" was at #2, it was kept out of the top spot by a song that he wrote, "He's A Rebel" by the Crystals...
Oh tudieu ! I'm gonna know those lyrics by heart... First it's epic but then : "Backstage I'm lonely, backstage I cry" The rythm in this verse breaks and flows in such a mesmerizing manner. Now I'll just go and melt by myself.
Love love love this man..my sis chrissi and I front row seats in akl nz..at the end of the show he held our hands and said " thanku ladies for yr btiful smiles" omg didn't wash my hand for weeks..lol
I remember hearing Gene Pitney on BBC, Hit-parade of sunday when I was a teenager. I'm a french woman and I didn't know his face. Thank you for that video. I haven't forgotten his great voice.
Sound & vid not go together, but really who cares, for It's the Great Gene Pitney, him in person, that wonderful voice, there is no other with such a great voice..
This clip is hilarious. Firstly, there's the Best Supporting Actress behind him, there's Mr Goofy trying to get in the shot and then there's the impatient kid at the end who can't wait for him to finish singing so he can get an autograph. Classic Gene!
This masterpiece needs to be re-mastered for better audio quality. Drums and bass end everything in the mid to low end needs to be brought up and cleaned up. I think Gene Pitney (RIP) would want to get this fixed. I don't know how, but: #mutelybird RUclips has the skills.
bonnie benini Now MY brother-he'd go to the pub and sink 10 beers in 30 minutes, then just sit there in the bar singing that high note at the end of Backstage for the rest of the afternoon! The other patrons'd be chucking 10-dollar notes at him-to get him to knock it off!

They have screaming trumpets at the end.

I think Gene Pitney (RIP) would want to get this fixed.
I don't know how, but: #mutelybird RUclips has the skills.
I had the Privilege of seeing him in Doncaster in the 60s ❤

Mr Pitney had talent oozing out of every oriface, would have been great to see him do a set with Dusty Springfield. What a show that would've been 😀.
i saw him at Hull City Hall. he was great. but his piano playing backing singer was greater. he sang all gene's high harmonies.

How about the way the intro is conducted?
I cant be the only, I cant be the only .
To get audio in sync, play on VLC -550 (J key)
my brother never could hit the high note at the end of this, still makes me laugh
MY BROTHER COULD ..HE WAS UNREAL...LOL......
bonnie benini Now MY brother-he'd go to the pub and sink 10 beers in 30 minutes, then just sit there in the bar singing that high note at the end of Backstage for the rest of the afternoon! The other patrons'd be chucking 10-dollar notes at him-to get him to knock it off!
Possibly my favourite GP track…
The mousey girl standing behind him really thought this video was her ticket to stardom (spoiler alert: it wasn't)
