Gene Pitney's UK version of 'Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart' is sung over the top of the original track and is pitched in a higher key in order to match Roger Cook's original range. Gene's US version is less highly produced and in a slightly different key. The UK version went into the Top 10, the US version flopped. The duet with Marc Almond of this song was released on January 14, 1989. Two weeks later it was Number One in the uk where it stayed for four weeks and went on to reach Number One in several other countries. Capitol/EMI refused to issue the record in the US because they didn't think two men singing this song together would work. A book by David McGrath (Gene Pitney The Singer, The Songs, The Songwriters) gives wonderful insight into Gene Pitney and his work.

@@sonnysoldies5288 I not only checked it out I have played it through what will be the first of many times. The first song on Volume One 'Every Breath I Take' has been my favourite song by Gene Pitney for many years and still is. There is quite a story behind this song.

Yes agreed, his songs formed much of the soundtrack of my early years,so I struggle with various covers that have surfaced over the past 3 decades, particularly Cyndi Laupers effort, she has been lauded for her power but i found her voice harsh, raucous and strident,.

Gene Pitney was one of the greatest! I have about half of these songs on vinyl, but all of them on CD, including "Amour mio" and other songs that Gene did in Italian. I was so shocked when he passed.🤔😥😪👍x10

No one else has even tried to sing that last sequence from "I'm Gonna Be Strong". Richard Anthony sang the French version, "Je ne dirai rien" but did not attempt that sequence. Even Gene broke it in the middle in later performances.

"Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart" is such a gem from the ace song writing team of Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway. And consistent with Gene's peculiarly greater popularity in the UK than in his own USA, in the 1980's he released a hit remake (with Marc Almond) there. (Unfortunately, every recording I have ever heard of the original is mono.)
