  • Today I'm making a rice pudding in the Air fryer. I'm not sure what settings to put it on, so it'll be a bit of guessing and hopefully a lot of luck!
    I decided not to put any nutmeg on top because Sian won't eat it unless it's plain.
    Thank you for watching.

    Thanks very much for this video, the first of yours that I have watched. I grew up on the Fanny Farmer recipe for baked rice pudding, and your recipe is identical. So, I was delighted to find your video when I looked for instructions on how to cook it in an air fryer.
    However, my first attempt was a disaster, and I'm wondering if you and your readers might be able to help me determine why. My US Fanny Farmer recipe calls for a quart (32 oz.) of milk and 3 tablespoons of rice plus 3/4 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt. So, I'm making twice the quantity than in your video.
    Fanny calls for 3-1/2 hours in a standard oven at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. You cooked yours at 160 degrees which, assuming that was Celsius, equates to 320 Fahrenheit (close enough). My settings were: Air Fry, 300 degrees, 45 minutes (to start).
    Within 3-4 minutes, the rice started exploding and smoke poured out of the fryer. The volume of liquid in the casserole dish had significantly decreased, and there was a complete boil-over mess in the basket. Rice particles had seared onto the electric coil at the top of the fryer. The rice left in the dish was still raw. None of this behavior had ever occurred in my regular oven.
    The only cause that I can think of is that maybe you cooked your pudding at 160 degrees Fahrenheit, not Celsius. Does that make sense? I know that air fryers cook with less time than regular ovens, but do they also cook at significantly less temperatures? I don't mind changing settings, but I don't fancy changing the methodology like pre-cooking the rice. Maybe all I need to do is cover the casserole dish, but it appears that wasn't necessary in your video.
    Any and all thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

      Thank you for watching. I'm not sure about settings for double the quantity. I've doubled mine up in the cooker and just adjusted cooking times, but I've never done more than one quantity in the air fryer. My air fryer only has a Celsius setting and my cooker is gas settings, I've never used Fahrenheit. Perhaps it'll be better on a lower setting, maybe try 110°c in your air fryer, I think that will be about equivalent to 300°f in a cooker. I will pin your message in hope that someone may know something about double quantities and may beable to tell you.

    I bought an air fryer years ago when they first came out. People said to me "You've bought a what??". I have just upgraded to one with a 'megadrawer' which can be divided into two or use as one large drawer. I had never thought of making a rice pudding in the airfryer until I gave the old, still working perfectly, one to one of my sons and he asked about rice pudding. So, I experimented today cooking the pudding on 160C for an hour on 'Bake'. It was yummy but too set for me so next time I will try 150C. I can always cook a little longer if I think it needs it. I am amazed at all the videos showing lovely stuff cooked in an air fryer but there doesn't seem to be much vegetarian though I will probably find many now! Thanks so much for this video. I am in UK as well so measurements and temperatures make sense!! To all lovely Americans watching, I am a feet and inches , pounds and ounces girl so as long as your recipes don't use cup measurements I am in heaven!!

      @therichardsonssimpleliving  10 месяцев назад +1

      I think it's all about experimenting because we all like our rice puddings different, as long as the rice is cooked.
      I had my air fryer last Christmas so it's not a year old yet, and it's my first one so I'm still a bit of a beginner with it, hence not everything always going to plan! I like pounds and ounces, I get mixed up with grammes and kilograms and I only use cups in my bread machine because it comes with the measuring cup. Thank you for watching 😊
